The question is what does last week's letter, posted at right, really mean.

On the surface, it appears as if Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and GOP Whip Jon Kyl want the Justice Department to crack down on web gaming. But the missive actually appears to indicate that Reid and Kyl want an explanation for those poker site indictments and want a reiteration of federal policy vis a vis the Internet. That could be a prelude to a web poker bill Kyl could live with.

Or, as Niels Lesniewski of CQ wrote:

The alliance between Reid and Kyl on the Internet gambling issue is another signal that Kyl, who helped win enactment of the current law (PL 109-347) against online gaming, may take a softer line toward online poker.

Reid and the casino lobby now support legalizing online poker in some form.

Kyl’s website contains a policy statement that opens the door to support for a Reid proposal that would provide a legal framework for online poker under the auspices of existing gaming regulators, such as Native American tribes and states including Nevada. Rep. Joe L. Barton, R-Texas, introduced similar legislation (HR 2366) in June.

“Efforts to carve out an exception for games like poker, which many believe is a game of skill, may be considered later this year,” Kyl says on his website. “Until I have the chance to review them, I cannot make a judgment about their merits. But I will consider them carefully as long as they leave in place the broader proscriptions against online betting."

these assholes have some nerve..".Until I have the chance to review them, I cannot make a judgment about their merits. But I will consider them carefully as long as they leave in place the broader proscriptions against online betting"

Oh wise and powerful master...have you ever heard a more narcissitic, self righteous, pretentious, high horse riding asshole in your life??? This fuckin guy actually has the audactiy to act like some kind of emporer as he considers what is best for America...This is the exact reason our country has lost it's way...His morale crusade is to ensure the broader proscriptions against online betting remain strong...WHY???? I would love to debate him on this issue on live TV. What a joke. I can't even begin to express how sickened I am that Senators like this are a part of our government. America; this in a nutshell is why we are in the state we are today.

Harry Reid's opposition I can understand. He lives in a state entirely dependent on gambling/entertainment revenue...and he doesn't want to see people blow their dollars playing online instead of trekking to Vegas.

What I can't understand is what the hell is John Kyl's dog in this fight? Who is paying him to crusade against this? A long time ago, I've stopped believing politicians pursue legislation which is actually beneficial to society. All the pursue on both sides is whatever is beneficial to their own pockets. What special interest group is paying off Kyl?

Someone needs to tell Kyl that white people also love to gamble and he may reconsider if he sees some overpaid corporate executive types rolling the bones a little bit north of him. No doubt he wants to invest a trillion dollars into constructing an electrical fence along the Az-Tx border to kill those spics and ship all of them darkies back to Africa but God forbid that money goes to the disadvantaged... that type of spending is just plain wrong and unfair to the "Haves" who are hard working (HA!) and good Americans. John Kyl does not have a Christian bone in his body (otherwise he would have that funny thing they call compassion)and is strictly a wizard at garnering votes from a suspect state.

Senator Kyl has seen the light and is now in a practical and profitable state of mind.

How's your new job coming along? Are you going to be around the Rio for the RX party?

The simple explanation of this letter shows just how inneffectual UIGEA is. It is asking the DOJ to say yea or nea to, not to internet, or intranet gambling, but people gambling from home on thier computers period.

It is voicing concern only. NO OBJECTIONS are presented, nor as is usual, there are no recomendations, but more correctly, specciffic and strongly worded instructions on the what the DOJ should do to assuage these concerns.

Hugely signifgant and signals to one and all that Neveda and Arizona have become partners in the "private network affliates" gaming buisness and that Kyl and Reid are simply covering thier parties asses and have kicked the ball to the the DOJ for any say or final say on how things will be going.
