Lilly, Dodgers Duel Diamondbacks In Desert

How the West is won is simple for the Los Angeles Dodgers, as the club must continue to pick up victories against divisional opponents. Arizona has thoughts of its own in the desert, hosting the Blue Crew in a series finale Sunday afternoon with the first pitch scheduled for 1:10 (PT).

The Dodgers moved their record to 16-15 against National League West foes with a 6-4 victory over the Diamondbacks Friday night at Chase Field. Manager Don Mattingly’s squad will remain in fourth place within the division regardless of how this series turns out, but the clubhouse remains optimistic.

One of the keys to Los Angeles' recent success has been the bullpen, failing to allow a run over the last five games, while limiting opposing hitters to a .173 batting average. That’s a comforting sign compared to the 4.21 ERA the group has posted this year, which ranks 25th in the majors.

Dodgers starting pitcher Ted Lilly (6-9, 4.79 ERA) is coming off his first win since June 11, allowing just a single run and four hits over five innings in a 4-1 home victory over the Padres. He had dropped his previous four decisions before that contest.

Lilly has posted horrific daytime numbers through seven outings, coming in with a 1-4 mark and 6.38 ERA, as he’s surrendered 10 home runs in 36 2/3 frames.

The left-hander will be facing the Diamondbacks for the 11th time (ninth start) in his career, coming in with a losing 3-5 record and 4.50 ERA, including a 4-1 loss at Dodger Stadium on May 15.

Total bettors will be a bit surprised to find the ‘under’ being 7-3-1 in Lilly’s last 11 tries versus divisional foes.

Arizona hasn’t enjoyed much success against Los Angeles historically, last winning a season series with a 13-5 record in 2005. The Diamondbacks were a dismal 5-13 versus their rivals last year. The Diamondbacks are currently second in the division standings due to their 34-23 record since May 13, trailing only Boston (38) for most wins in the majors over that span.

Daniel Hudson (9-5, 3.74 ERA) hasn’t tasted defeat since May 12 in San Francisco, winning six consecutive decisions heading into Sunday. The right-hander has recorded a solid 5-2 record and 3.05 ERA in nine home starts, issuing just 11 free passes and registering 54 strikeouts in 65 frames.

Hudson hasn’t fared so well during the daytime despite his 3-2 record, posting a 5.11 ERA under the sun in seven starts compared to a 6-3 mark and 3.00 ERA in 12 nighttime appearances. The Old Dominion product has faced the Dodgers just once in his young career, collecting a 5-2 home win in his final start last year, allowing two runs and two hits over 8 2/3 innings.

Home plate umpire Manny Gonzalez has been behind the plate six times this year and the ‘under’ is 4-1-1 in those contests. Teams have averaged just 5.83 runs a contest when he’s calling balls and strikes.

Weather forecasts are suggesting game-time highs over the century mark in the Phoenix area Sunday, which will likely cause the retractable roof to remain closed at Chase Field.

St. Louis Cardinals Close Set at Cincinnati Reds

In what could be the fiercest rivalry in baseball right now, the defending National League Central champion Cincinnati Reds will host the St. Louis Cardinals in the final game of a three-game series on Sunday. The teams have already faced each other 11 times in 2011 and will not meet again until the last three games between them this year at St. Louis over Labor Day weekend. Game time is scheduled for 10:10 a.m. (PT).

The season series has been fairly even so far with Cincinnati winning six of the first 10 games heading into Saturday. The Reds won two of those games in extra innings and earned what might be the most dramatic victory yet in Friday's series opener. Second baseman Brandon Phillips hit a walk-off two-run homer for a 6-5 win as -145 chalk after the Cardinals had taken a 5-4 lead in the eighth on a two-run shot by Albert Pujols.

To say neither team likes each other would be a major understatement, especially since they engaged in a bench-clearing brawl last August 10 when Phillips got into an argument with St. Louis catcher Yadier Molina at home plate during his first at-bat of the game. Cincinnati was swept in that three-game series but ended up getting the last laugh by winning the division.

The Reds will send Homer Bailey (3-4, 4.12 ERA) to the mound hoping he can break his personal four-game losing streak following an impressive start to the season. Bailey won each of his first three starts thanks in part to outstanding run support, as Cincy averaged eight runs in those games.

However, the team has lost the last five times he has gone to the mound, scoring more than four runs just once over that stretch.

Bailey has struggled against the Cardinals during his career with a 1-4 mark and 6.03 ERA in seven starts. But he has pitched well at home this year, going 2-1 in three outings at the Great American Ball Park with a solid 2.84 ERA. The ‘over’ is 6-2 in his eight starts.

Meanwhile, St. Louis starting pitcher Jaime Garcia (9-3, 3.22) has never lost to the Reds, going 5-0 with a 3.82 ERA. Garcia earned one of those wins at home on July 5 as a 130 favorite, allowing just one run and two hits in six innings of an 8-1 victory with three walks and four strikeouts. He has been favored in each of his last 12 outings.

The young southpaw’s main problem this season has been pitching on the road though, as he has suffered two of his three losses with a 5.67 ERA away from home. He has started just one road game since June 14 and was fortunate to register a win in that 9-6 victory at Baltimore on June 30, surrendering five runs and 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings of work.

The ‘over’ has cashed in five of Garcia's past six outings overall, including that win over the Orioles.

Mike Everitt will have the plate for the finale and will be calling both Reds and Cardinals pitches for the first time this season. Now in his 12th full MLB season, Everitt has a slight 10-9 lean to the 'under,' including five of his last eight staying below the total.

There is a 30 percent chance of thunderstorms in Cincinnati on Sunday with a projected high temperature of 88 degrees.

Boston Red Sox MLB Odds Fight At Tampa Bay Rays

ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball betting festivities head to Tropicana Field this weekend for a big-time showdown in the AL East between the Tampa Bay Rays and Boston Red Sox.

This is going to be the final game of this 3-game set in the Sunshine State, and Boston will be trying to nurse its slender lead in the division, the only one in the bigs with three teams with at least 50 wins. The first pitch will be thrown out at 5:05 p.m. (PT).

The Rays really have to do a better job of protecting their home turf, as they are just a game above .500 and are down -$646 to show for their work at the Trop. It would also help out a ton if the offense could get something going on a consistent basis.

The 9-run outburst on Friday night raised Tampa Bay's average runs per game to 4.27, but the team is still only batting .246 as a club, No. 23 in the land. Only Casey Kotchman is batting anywhere near .300, and aside from him and All-Star Matt Joyce, there just aren't any other true consistent offensive threats.

Saturday afternoon's game was still pending with James Shields and the Rays priced at -140 and an 8-run total.

The lack of consistent offense is bad news for Jeff Niemann, who is going to be on the hill on Sunday night. He is clearly the least notable man in the Tampa Bay rotation this year, as his 4-4 record and 4.53 ERA are both ranked last on the squad. The righty only has 33 strikeouts this season in 53.2 innings of work, and batters are clocking him to the tune of a .284 batting average against.

Against Boston in his career, Niemann is 2-2, but he has had some ugly outings with a 6.62 ERA. To make matters worse, at home in 2011, the big right hander is only 1-3 with a 5.53 ERA.

Matters will be made even more difficult against a Boston offense that ranks No. 1 in scoring (5.36 runs per game), batting average (.278), and team OPS (.811). Carl Crawford is still out of the lineup with a hamstring injury, but the former member of the Rays could be ready to come back in this one if he is given medical clearance.

Josh Beckett will take the ball for manager Terry Francona, and that's a great thing for Boston's MLB bettors. There is no doubt that the righty has resurrected his career after an awful 2010 campaign in which he only went 6-6. This season, he is 8-3 with a 2.27 ERA, and one could argue that he really should have double digits worth of wins already if not for some bad luck.

Beckett has also dominated the Rays in his career. He is 8-4 with a 3.15 ERA in his 17 starts. In his last outing against Tampa Bay here at Tropicana Field, Beckett pitched a complete game shutout and only surrendered one hit. He struck out six and didn't issue a walk.

About the only thing that the Red Sox don't have in their corner in this one is the fact that they really haven't played all that well against Tampa Bay of late, especially on the road. The Rays are 7-3 in their last 10 home games against the Sox, and they are 11-5 overall in the last 16 clashes.

The Rays welcome the New York Yankees to town on Monday, while Boston leaves town to take on the Baltimore Orioles.

Sunday's Game of the Day

July 17, 2011

Boston Red Sox (-135 & 8) at Tampa Bay Rays - 8:05 pm (EDT)

The last time Josh Beckett (8-3, 2.27 ERA) pitched at Tampa Bay, he was outstanding putting in perhaps his best outing of the season. It remains his only complete game and shutout of 2011. But that was last month, four starts ago, and a lot has changed since then.

Beckett had a 1.86 ERA after that 3-0 win at Tampa, but went on to give up nine runs over his next three starts just before the All-Star break ballooning his ERA to 2.27. Beckett was cautious about his knee he said was feeling some discomfort and opted out of the All-Star game because of it.

After taking a few days off from the All-Star game, he threw under supervision on Friday and was cleared to start. Boston would be wise to take all assurances that the rock of their staff doesn’t miss any extended time like others have because of playing through pain and making the injury worse. Currently, Jon Lester and Clay Buchholz are on the disabled list.

Granted, over Beckett’s last three starts, the Red Sox did win two of them to continue an on going theme with Beckett starting and the Sox winning. Boston is 12-5 this season when Beckett takes the mound. While everyone on the Sox roster struggled to start the season, Beckett was the one shining light of consistency until the rest of his team caught up.

The question everyone has to ask today is whether Beckett’s knee ’really’ is okay or could there be something more to it. I hate to refer back to those last three games, but Beckett did put up his two lowest strikeout totals of the season -- getting three against Baltimore and only one against the Phillies -- and he also served up three of his seven home runs allowed this season.

Taking his best shot against Beckett and the Red Sox Sunday will be Jeff Niemann (4-4, 4.53 ERA) who spent most of May and June on the disabled list with back pains. Before getting the time off to recuperate, the Rays had lost four of his six starts.

However, since coming back on June 20, the Rays have gone 4-0 with Niemann on the mound. Of those four games, Niemann got the win in three of them. The only game he looked bad in -- June 26 at Houston -- the Rays came back to win 14-10.

If just looking at the three good starts alone, Niemann has given up only two runs in 19.1 innings of work and the young steady bullpen has closed the games out strong for him.

After Saturday’s Boston win, the rubber match will mean a lot to both sides as they battle for the AL East crown with the second-place finisher likely in store for a wild card. Currently, the Red Sox have a 1.5 game lead over Yankees and a six game lead on the Rays. While Tampa has played well lately with the Yankees slipping a bit, the Sox just keep mowing them down and make it hard for all their chasers to keep up.

Chances are that Beckett still isn’t 100%. Now comes the dilemma of how high you’re willing to go in siding with a less than par Beckett. Jeff Niemann helps the decision a little bit with bettors because of still not trusting him to pitch well after his slow start. Beckett will be very attractive at minus-135 or lower.

The most popular bet of the day will still be the Red Sox on the run-line because of the starters involved and also because Boston is the most popular run-line bet daily in baseball. With all those boppers in the lineup, it’s hard to argue with the logic.

Betting the total OVER 8 runs may seem like an easy go at it just because the Red Sox have pounded out 10 home runs in their last three games, but Beckett‘s pace seems to slow down the Boston offense. The Sox have gone OVER the number in five of their last six games, but Beckett has gone UNDER in three of his last four starts.

Meanwhile, Niemann’s last two starts have been identical 5-1 scores, beating the Yankees and the Cardinals, two pretty good hitting teams.

Beckett Fun Facts

Josh Beckett really has had a Cy Young type of season based on what he’s done to hitters all over the league. The most telling stat is the batting averages of his opponents and what they hit against him with runners on base.

The batter hitting first in the lineup has a .098 average against him, so it’s pretty much one out to start most games. The highest batting average against him in his opponents order is from the No. 9 hole at .314, but none of the hits were for extra-bases.

He is absolutely destroying his opponents No. 2 (.149), No. 3 (.200) and No. 4 (.136) hitters, the heart of everyone's lineup. When runners are in scoring position, they hit only .188 off of him. When no runners are base, they hit .175. When the bases are loaded, no one gets a hit off Beckett.

Pitching Probables for Sunday, July 17 - 1:10 EDT

Saturday line: TBD

PHI: 3-4 (-1.10 Units) when Kyle Kendrick starts

NYM: 6-13 (-6.20 Units) when Mike Pelfrey starts

Do you hear that? It’s the sigh of relief from the Mets who luck out this series, not having to face aces Roy Halladay or Cliff Lee. Still, Kendrick (4-4, 3.58 ERA) is no bum, adjusting to a role that has netted him 15 relief appearances to go along with seven starts this season. In three appearances against the Mets this year he has been strong, allowing just two runs in 8.1 innings. Those follow his career numbers, which boasts a 3.07 career ERA against the Kings of Queens. Play on him against the inconsistent Pelfrey.
Pelfrey (5-8, 4.55 ERA) was counted on to be an ace in the wake of Johan Santana’s injury, but has been far from that. The good news is he has a 3.24 ERA in his past three starts. The bad news is the Phillies generally clobber him, with 12 earned runs in 14 innings this year. More bad news is that he struggles in day games, in which he has a 6.65 ERA this season. Pelfrey is not the stopper needed on the mound potentially defending against a sweep.

Pitching Probables for Sunday, July 17 - 1:10 EDT

Sunday line: TBD

STL: 12-7 (+3.45 Units) when Jaime Garcia starts

CIN: 3-5 (-2.60 Units) when Homer Bailey starts

Garcia (9-3, 3.32 ERA) is following up his strong freshman campaign with another good one this season, and has probably been the most reliable starter on the Cardinals staff this year. The bad news for the lefty is that he is in fact a lefty. The Reds are first in baseball with a .292 batting average against southpaws, 10 points higher than the next team. Their .836 OPS against lefties is also tops in the league, by 16 points. That said, Garcia allowed one run over six innings in a win his one time out against the Reds this year, so maybe he is a rare lefty who has figured them out.
Bailey (3-4, 4.13 ERA) comes into the break 0-3 in his past three starts, giving up 12 earned runs in that span. Like Arroyo, he needed time to clear his head over the break. With the Reds’ success against lefties, this could turn out to be an offensive showdown, given that the Cardinals have tagged him for a 1-4 record and 23 earned runs in 34.1 career innings against him.

Pitching Probables for Sunday, July 17 - 8:05 EDT

Sunday line: TBD

BOS: 12-5 (+6.10 Units) when Josh Beckett starts

TB: 6-4 (+2.70 Units) when Jeff Niemann starts

So much for Beckett’s (8-3, 2.27 ERA) woes of the past couple seasons. The righty ace is in the midst of a dominant season in which he has an amazing 0.95 WHIP. He has one complete game on the season, a shutout of the Rays in which he struck out six and walked none.
Niemann (4-4, 4.53 ERA) has been decent this year, but has been terrible against Boston in his career. Beware of betting on him because not only is he facing Beckett, but against the Red Sox he sports a lifetime ERA of 6.62 in four games. Beckett is definitely the play in the final game of this series.

Sunday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

Jaime Garcia, St. Louis Cardinals (9-3, 3.22 ERA)

Garcia continues to impress in his second full season in the bigs. The Cardinals lefty has won three straight outings despite a 4.15 ERA over that span. His most recent performance was a six-inning showing, in which Garcia allowed two runs on seven hits while striking out five batters. He was stellar in his last start versus the Reds, giving up only one earned run on two hits in six innings in an 8-1 victory on July 5.

Jair Jurrjens, Atlanta Braves (12-3, 1.87 ERA)

Jurrjens is giving the Phillies staff a run for their money in the NL Cy Young race. The Braves’ budding ace has won four straight starts and carries a 1.05 ERA during this streak. His final start before the break was a solid six-inning effort, in which the right hander allowed one run on five hits in a win over Colorado. Jurrjens’ brief showing in the All-Star Game forced the club to give him an extra day of rest heading into Sunday.

Slumping

Aaron Cook, Colorado Rockies (0-4, 5.82 ERA)

The Rockies sinkerballer hasn’t been himself since returning from a broken finger suffered this spring. In six starts this season, Cook has pitched just 34 total innings – an average of 5 2-3 innings per outing. He’s yet to earn a win and is coming off a disastrous outing against the Braves last Wednesday. He allowed seven earned runs on 10 hits in five innings.

Jake Peavy, Chicago White Sox (4-3, 5.27 ERA)

The All-Star break wasn’t enough down time for Peavy, who had this Tuesday's start pushed to the weekend due to a sore right arm. He told reporters he’s only been about 70 percent for his last three starts, which explains his dreadful 0-2 record and 7.71 ERA in that span. In his last start before the break, Peavy lasted only 4 1-3 innings, giving up five runs on 10 hits in a 6-3 loss to the Twins.

Sunday Night Baseball: Red Sox at Rays
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Red Sox at Tampa Bay Rays (125, 8)

This week’s Sunday night game is an American League East showcase with the division-leading Boston Red Sox paying a visit to Tropicana Field, home of the third-place Tampa Bay Rays.

Tampa won Friday and Boston won Saturday, setting up Sunday's rubber game.

TROUBLE REACHING HOME, AT HOME

Home has not been where the runs are for the Rays. Overall, they are averaging 4.27 runs a game (14th best in MLB) but most of their scoring has been on the road. At Tropicana Field, Tampa Bay averages only 3.4 runs per game, which that ranks among the worst in baseball.

But the Rays’ bats have been coming alive in the second half of the season. Before the break, they scored a season-high eight runs against the Cardinals at home in a win. And, in their first game after the break against the Red Sox, the Rays set another season-high when they scored nine in a 9-6 win in the series opener.

WE’RE GOING STREAKING

Count the Boston Red Sox among the teams not happy to see the All-Star break arrive. Boston had been on a tear, winning six consecutive games including a four-game sweep of the Baltimore Orioles in which they scored 32 runs. Then the All-Star Break arrived and a four-day layoff was followed by a 9-6 loss to Tampa Bay on Friday. The Red Sox bounced back with a 9-5 win Saturday.

Boston has traditionally been a slow-starting team after the break. The Red Sox haven’t won the series immediately following the All-Star break in 11 years.

DELAYED HOMECOMING

Former Tampa Bay Ray Carl Crawford will not be joining his former and current teammates in Tropicana Field for this series. Crawford is still nursing a hamstring strain and will not rejoin the Red Sox until Monday. He is currently rehabbing at Triple-A Pawtucket. Without Crawford, the Red Sox are 13-9 overall this season.

ONE-HIT WONDER

Sunday night marks Josh Beckett’s return to the scene of his one-hitter on June 15. Beckett was sensational in a 3-0 Boston win at Tropicana Field, as only a third-inning single separated him from a perfect game. Beckett breezed through the contest, throwing only 97 pitches and striking out six. It was his only meeting against the Rays this season.

Since that game, he has been less than spectacular, yielding nine earned runs in 19 innings of work. Beckett is also coming off a knee injury, hyperextending his left knee against the Orioles last week. The injury forced him out of the American League’s rotation for the All-Star Game in Arizona this past week.

"I played long toss (on) some flat ground," Beckett told MLB.com this week. "Everything is good, just like I said it was. If that would have been a regular game, I would have pitched in it. It's just tough. You go out there, there's a lot of things going on before the (All-Star Game), maybe time is not always on your side."

Beckett is 8-4 with a career 3.15 ERA and 125 strikeouts versus the Rays.

RAY OF LIGHT

If Tampa Bay wants to contend in the AL East, it will need No. 4 starter Jeff Niemann (4-4, 4.53 ERA) to turn in more performances like his last two.

The Rays are 4-0 in Niemann’s last four starts, including a pair of 5-1 wins over the Cardinals and Yankees in which Niemann allowed a combined two earned runs in over 13 innings of work. He has been a different pitcher since rejoining the Rays rotation on June 20. He had been sidelined with a lower back strain for nearly two months. Before the injury he was 1-4 with a 5.72 ERA. Since returning, he is 3-0 with a 2.74 ERA.

NOTEWORTHY NUMBERS

- Boston is 13-25 in games during the first series following the All-Star break since 2001.

- Boston is 21-6 in its last 26 road games versus a team with a winning record.

- Tampa Bay is 11-6 in the last 17 meetings between the two teams, including 7-4 at home.

- Tampa Bay is 5-2 in its last seven games against Beckett.

- Tampa Bay outfielder Matt Joyce is the only Ray batting over .280. The Red Sox have five players batting over .280, including Adrian Gonzalez (.350), Jacoby Ellsbury (.315) and David Ortiz (.300).

- The Red Sox are 2-0 in Sunday Night Baseball this year, winning two games against the Yankees. This is Tampa Bay’s first Sunday night game.

Hot lines: Sunday's best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Florida Marlins at Chicago Cubs (-105)

The Marlins have won seven out of eight following Saturday's 13-3 shellacking of the Cubs. In that stretch Florida has scored 49 runs, an average of 6.1 per game.

Mike Stanton belted two homers Saturday, giving him 20, and leadoff hitter Emilio Bonifacio extended his hitting streak to 15 games. Shortstop Hanley Ramirez is 5-for-14 with three doubles and three RBIs since the All-Star break.

Florida seems to play better away from home, where it is 24-23, while Chicago is a horrid 21-28 at the formerly Friendly Confines.

The Marlins are 12-4 in pitcher Chris Volstad's last 16 starts on grass. The Cubs have lost pitcher Randy Wells' last four starts.

Pick: Marlins

St. Louis Cardinals at Cincinnati Reds (-110, 8.5)

When Homer Bailey toes the rubber against the Cardinals, it's usually bad news for Reds fans. Bailey is 1-4 with a 6.03 ERA in seven career starts against St. Louis.

Matt Holliday is 4-for-11 (.364) against Bailey with three RBIs, Albert Pujols is 4-for-13 (.308) with five RBIs, and Colby Rasmus is 4-for-10 (.400).

Cincinnati also has lost Bailey's last five starts.

Cards starter Jaime Garcia, on the other hand, is 5-0 lifetime against Cincinnati with a 3.82 ERA. He allowed one earned run over six innings in an 8-1 victory over the Reds on July 5.

Joey Votto is 1-for-11 (.182) against Garcia, Scott Rolen is 2-for-13 (.154), and Brandon Phillips is 4-for-17 (.235).

Pick: Cardinals
