300 foot high waterfall, seems like such a horrible idea, no idea why anyone does this

Three members of a family were drowned as flash flood caused a sudden flow of water in the famous Patalpani waterfall near Indore.

Patalpani waterfall is a famous picnic spot near Indore, and the Rathi family members, who had gone there to enjoy a quiet Sunday, had no inkling of a disaster awaiting them.

The water current caught all the five people & three of them Chhavi, Chandrashekhar & Mudita drowned, while local people rescued Mudita's brother and another youth.

The video was taken by a local tourist Gaurav Patidar.

NEW DELHI - AN AMATEUR cameraman captured five members of a family being swept away by flood waters at the weekend in a deadly accident at a waterfall in central India.
Local police officer P.S. Maravi said the holiday-makers were bathing below the 90m Patalpani waterfall in Madhya Pradesh state on Sunday when they were caught by a torrent of water.
After hanging on to each other and clinging to support, they were swept away. Three were found dead, while two survived, the Press Trust of India news agency quoted officer Maravi as saying.
Almost 200,000 people have been effected by flooding in the north-eastern state of Assam and monsoon rains have created havoc in several other states including in Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtara and Uttar Pradesh. -- AFP

According to local reports, two of those swept over the cataracts were rescued alive. The corpse of a woman who died in the tragedy was recovered, and two of the five are still missing.

Nanuram (25) of Badnawar and Anishq (18) of Harda were somehow saved by the people. But the body of Chavi (22), daughter of Purshottam Dhoot and a resident of Aggrawal Nagar was fished out by fire tenders of Mhow and Indore. The body of Chandrashekhar Rathi (55) and Mudita Rathi (22), both residents of Harda were still missing. Both Mudita and Chavi were pursuing MBA at a college in Indore. Bherulal Chowdhary, an eyewitness to the incident, said more than 50 persons were sitting near the waterfall when the water suddenly gushed into the stream, forcing them to scamper towards safety. Heavy rains were reported in the catchment area of the upstream, thus flash flooding occurred before authorities had time to inform the tourists. The villagers warned the people sitting in the risky areas and asked them to move away from water.

id imagine once the water hit them, which was fairly quickly, those rocks underneath them become slippery as shit and the speed of the water would have probably swept them away. Main issues I have is what not sit on the river bank if you want to be out there, they really didnt seem to be in any hurry to get out of the middle of the river in the 20-30 secs they had before they were screwed. personally think they should have tried to lay side ways against a rock until the water died down or someone with a rope/rescue came. standing like they did, just had too much weight up high on bad footing

I don't know much about picnics but I'm gonna guess that the middle of a river is not a good place to have one.

That ain't no amusement park water ride. I don't understand why they just stood there until it got worse. I guess they assumed it was just going to die down and get better at some point.

looking at the video(very sad) one guy just stood there, almost relaxing, but basically there was a good few seconds to dash to safety, basically, I think they did not realize how much water was coming,

I think I want my money back!

Wow. SAD.

No way would I pick a place like that to picnic. I don't care how pretty the view is...they were still relatively close to the cliff.
