UPDATE: With Beltran's salary a possible issue for potential trade suitors, ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney wrote earlier this week that the Mets are willing to pick up the money in order to get a better return. Adam Rubin of
ESPNNewYork.com adds Tuesday that the Mets are willing to cover Beltran's remaining salary because they are demanding top-notch young talent in return.
There is an additional incentive to get a deal done. Beltran's contract prohibits the Mets from offering him arbitration, meaning the Mets cannot gain picks in next year's draft if Beltran remains through the end of the season and then leaves.
