Hello everyone,

There is a small family in serious need of help. Should anyone be able to or willing to assist, please contact me via PM or via cell phone to 8363-4120. Wilheim and several others here know me well, and can vouch for my honesty and attest to my trustworthiness. If you would like to make any donation in person, or visit them to better understand their needs please feel free to contact me.

There is a small family in my neighborhood comprised of a 70 year old widow, her daughter of age 45 who is mentally deficient and who has an 8 year old boy by the name of Luis. The little boy Luis was diagnosed with Leukemia and has now been hospitalized for 3 months at the Hospital de Ninos. The child is receiving treatment for what I understand is one of the more difficult types of that cancer. The story is heart breaking. Only God knows the pain they are living in each day... and as a parent it tears our heart when we receive them at our house and see them cry from the bottom of their hearts. Perhaps you and I can help bring a little sunshine and relief into their hearts and lives.

Thanks to Costa Rica's health care system, the boys treatment is free of charge, but this family of 3 lives in extreme poverty. Their only income, the grandmother's pension barely amounts to $80 a month which hardly covers her and her daughter's daily bus fares to visit the boy at the hospital daily where the two take turns staying with the boy; one arrives at the hospital at 7am and leaves at 6pm when the other arrives to spend the night at the boy's bed-side.

I have asked the grandmother whether she eats and she humbly dodges the question as she evidently does not have the means to afford anything during the day. This has put her health in an extremely vulnerable position. So she spends the day waiting until her daughter arrives so she can return home where she would see about possibly eating something. Their story is one of much sadness, but in the measure possible I want to try and make a difference helping them as best I can, and want to offer anyone interested in participating with me the opportunity to do so.

I bought a few groceries for them 12 days or so ago, and pass on additional food supplies every chance I can, but I am sure they must be running out already. I would like to buy some vitamin supplements for the old woman some groceries and additional house supplies as well. If there was a way, I would really like to have her visit with a doctor as she is in a very fragile and weak state of health. Her health has deteriorated very quickly as of late, and it is no wonder given their recent plight and the sorrow they are living in for her grandchild who just days ago had a part of his lung removed due to complications.

The most difficult thing right now is trying to find a way so that her and her daughter don't have to visit their boy ... trying to find neighbors or relatives to go and spend a day or a night at the hospital instead for them so they can get some much needed rest. Contacting their relatives has been impossible. I am going to see if I can volunteer to spend the night this Saturday. They have been enduring their current routine without rest for the past 3 months.

I realize we all have our own situations to deal with, and the current state of economical matters is difficult, but please have them in your prayers and if you would like to and can participate, contact me. Thank you, and God bless.

A few members have asked about being able to send a donation using Paypal. Although not ideal, it is one way you can contribute if you are abroad and wish to participate. Locals I would ask that you contact me to coordinate for cash pick-up, or a deposit.

FYI - Tico has done much to assist the needy in Costa Rica for a long time and is as honest and trustworthy as anyone I am familiar with in the industry.

Please help if you are able as I know Tico would not ask if this was not a dire situation..

Thanks, wilheim

Update: I am very happy to report that the first of cash donations were handed to the needy family this morning! The aged widow was without words and extremely grateful as they will now be able to make payment on overdue utility bills, and purchase certain supplies. Mrs. Teresa says she does not know how to thank each of you for such generosity, and kept quietly repeating expressions such as "glory to God ... may God bless you and your friends health... I can't find the words to thank you". She says the boy was operated on again to his lungs, bringing the count of operations to his lungs now to 3, but that doctors say he will be able to go home soon, even if only for a limited time before needing more treatment. This news of the boy possibly coming home has completely changed her countenance, and YOU and I were able to help make that smile much bigger today!

There are a few other anonymous helpers who have made pledges, and others who have requested the family's contact information meaning additional and much needed help is soon to come. Thank you again everyone, and thank God we have the privilege to help those in need! Anyone else wishing to participate can PM me for more information. Have a great weekend everybody!

The old lady was telling me the other day that a cell phone someone had given her to help was no longer working. Communication is vital given their circumstances. If anyone has an old but basic, working cell phone to offer them please let me know. Thanks!

I want to thank you everyone for your very kind contributions. The family is presently dealing with a new bout of issues affecting the child's health, and the old ladies are seemingly beginning to "fall apart" emotionally. Their child's illness is really taking a severe toll on their health, but you and I have helped make some things better for them by taking care of some of their utility bills, and helping put food on their table. When the child is allowed to visit them at home -which I pray happens in the short term- I will post on here again to see if we cant do something special for the little guy. If anyone else wishes to contribute in any way, feel free to private message me. Thank you all and may God bless!

Good news!

Hello everyone,

I wanted to share the news that the little boy "Luis" was allowed to go home last night after approximately 4 months of being in the hospital for the treatment of leukemia. It is not clear how many days he will be allowed to stay home, but this event has brought much hope and happiness into the life of his mother and grandmother. I hope all of us who have been following their story and have participated in one way or another will share in their joy.

The boy's arrival brings about new needs. Should anyone wish to participate with a small donation on their behalf, please private message me and I will gladly coordinate or explain how you can help them too.

There are many needy families in Costa Rica, but helping faciliate assistance for this very special family in need has been an honor. I cannot thank you enough for such unselfish outpouring of generosity on their behalf. Thank you again for everything you've done.

This will be my last post on the topic unless anyone else wishes to learn more about this family.

Sincerely,
Tico

Dear friends:

It is with great sorrow that I must report that after more than one year of grueling treatments-- after many ups and downs in the child's state of health -- and after tremendous suffering for this special family, the doctors have sent the boy home to be with his mother and grandmother stating there is nothing more they can do. The doctors have said the child should be fed well, and allowed to play sports or do whatever he wants but say the illness will soon take his precious life.

The poverty-stricken grandmother and mother of this young boy are heartbroken; words cannot express the sorrow they must be enduring.

I would like to try and organize a special fund-raiser for this family so they can be prepared to meet funeral expenses. Anyone interested in making a monetary or food donation, or willing to help pay their utility bills please contact me for information. I will also see about setting up a Paypal account just for this purpose so those abroad interested in helping this special family can also participate.

Please PM me for information on how you can participate or for contact information to the family direct.

Please forgive me for the appeal, but help with the cause if you find it in your heart.
