Tiger Woods to end 3-month layoff at Firestone
12:21 AM, Jul. 29, 2011**|**
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Tiger Woods finally gets back to golf next week at the Bridgestone Invitational, ending an 11-week break to heal injuries to his left leg.

Woods used his website to announce his return on Thursday.

He posted on his Twitter account that he's "feeling fit and ready to tee it up at Firestone next week. Excited to get back out there!"

It marks the third-longest layoff of his career, only this time Woods returns with as much uncertainty about his future as ever.

Along with questions about the strength of his left knee and Achilles', he embarks on his latest comeback with a new caddie, and without guarantees Woods will be eligible for more than two weeks.

Woods last month fired Steve Williams, who caddied for Adam Scott at the U.S. Open, then angered his boss by working for the Australian again at the AT&T National without seeking permission.

Woods has plunged to No. 21 in the world — his lowest ranking since Jan. 26, 1997.

Not sure why we need to hear a announcement like this, especially from a player outside the top 20

Really shocked a gambler of your caliber looks at rankings in any sport, especially golf. I'm pretty sure nobody has any clue what to expect out of tiger in a tournament right now, I know for Damn sure nobody in this forum knows what to expect. I dnt expect a win, but I'd bet he is in top 20, just a guess though.

Like him or not, everybody is glad he is coming back, otherwise there would be no interest in this topic.

Let's state the facts shall we? Tiger Woods hasn't won a tournament since November 15, 2009 shortly before he was exposed for having extramarital affairs that led to his divorce.

He fired caddie Steve Williams and The Golf Channel reported yesterday that Bryon Bell, a childhood friend and president of Tiger Woods Design would caddie for him at the Bridgestone Invitational next week. Bell has caddied for Woods three times, including a win at the 1999 Buick Invitational. He'd bring a level of familiarity to Woods, but Bell was implicated during Woods sex scandal as allegedly arranging travel for one of his mistresses.

Now, for an opinion. Woods has no shot at winning the tournament and he is currently just an irritating footnote in golf. Tiger may be on the prowl again, but he isn't trying to win golf tournaments. He has other needs that must be attended too. He no longer has the mental focus necessary to win on any kind of regular basis and particularly not majors. If you can find a bet against him winning any tournament, take it everytime. His best game is far behind him now and there is a new generation in town.

With all due respect, this new generation has left the door wide open for Tiger to comeback through it. It's funny people are considering Luke Donald the best player in the world. Donald a hell of a player, but he Damn sure isn't the best. Rory is the only one that has shown any signs of somewhat controlling the game, and he did that once, yet hasn't done it since and has only won 3 times as a pro anywhere. you think the pack is playing up to Tigers level, you are blind. if, and yes its a big if, tiger can find a level a bit below his old form he will be doing the same thing he has always done. We've been watching all these exciting Sunday finishes in tournaments, thats just what has been going on for 2nd place in tigers prime. The door is wide open for Tiger to regain dominance, there is no question about that. If you don't agree, please please please tell me of the unknown, unborn golfer that you know of?

The facts remain, Tiger has not won since 2009 and has shown no sign of getting close to the consistent form he had in his prime. Without the mental strength he once had, he will not be able to close tournaments like he once did. He will never, never be the same player he once was again. He may win from time to time but he is no different then any of the players out on the tour week in and week out. If you feel he will step through what you perceive to be a wide open door, I am willing to make a wager with you for any amount you wish that he doesn't win next week's tournament. Just name the amount.

The world's best golfer of all time returns to action after brutal injury and rehab..>>

I tell you this; you Tiger Haters..!!!

I bet the TV ratings are at least 3 x what they would be without Tiger playing..They'll tune in for Tiger; that's the thing about America..>>We still like the BEST; we still like a WINNER; and Tiger is the best at both..>>

I wouldn't bet against my beloved Tiger; I think he' got that glint in his eye again;I hope He curses on every swing..!!

PS; you racist hypocrites can just go back to your plantations...

Actually, I am not a Tiger hater and never have been. I have enjoyed the incredible ability that he possessed in his prime. That being said, however, today is a different time in Tiger's life and he is mentally not the same individual that we saw before and therein lies the difference IMHO. As for being a racist, that is just a ridiculous statement. If you knew my background and what I am involved with, you would feel like a fool for making that comment.

Why would I wager he wins next week? I've already stated I don't think he wins next week. We just heard last week he hasn't even practiced yet. If you want to state the facts, the fact is you, me, and any other person on this forum don't know the facts when it comes to tiger. That's the fact. I'm going off of 10 yrs of his dominating career, your going off of two years of public embarrassment and knee injury. This is a sport that has been dominated by one person in the last 20 years, a sport that is dominated by nobody right now. The door is wide open for him to control the game, like I said IF he can do it. Nobody else can do it. Can you not figure that out?

I'll be curious to see if Tiger has modified his swing in any way because of his injury. You can believe the announcers will be picking apart everything he does. As for Tiger winning, I think once he gets a little stability back in his life and stays healthy he'll start winning again down the road.

Yea, I'm pretty curious about the swing myself. I def expect the short game to be much better then it was earlier in the year, and if he would have had a short game earlier in the year, he prob would have already had one win at doral, possibly two. He hasn't hit the ball that bad this year, other than sawgrass. It will def be interesting. I think his mental game will be just fine if/when he gets into contention, but he's got to get into the mix first.
Hopefully he is getting over the whole ashamed stuff and realizing that these galleries are still showing up to watch him and pulling for him just like they always have.
