I love Billy and can't wait for the Money Ball movie to be here. That being said, for all the good moves he's made over the years, this one is horrible.

He essentially gave up Jeremy Bonderman and Carlos Pena for Ted Lilly. Then a year later swapped Lilly for Bobby Kielty. Kielty was then released after not doing much in Oakland.

Just some interesting MLB trade info.

Pena only had 40 games with Oakland and was on track for almost 30 homers if he had got to about 520 at-bats. Now he has 144 homers over 4 seasons not counting the 30-35 he'll hit this year. Kielty has a .254 career average and just about 50 homers. Hasn't played since 2007. Bonderman never did realize his potential but was a top prospect that has had some decent years.

On a side note, I registered carlospena.com the same day I registered jkrowling.net. I was a speculative little shit back in the day. Never made much money off either domain and the Harry Potter chick threatened a lawsuit. Lovely.

Pena was garbage 3 times later signed Minor league deals with Detroit, Boston and Tampa...

That's another one that didn't work out. In his defense, everyone thought that was the year that Oakland had to win it all, Street wanted a new contract, Holliday didn't have much left on his contract, and CarGo hadn't realized his potential. That is the one trade I can remember where Oakland wasn't actually playing for the future.

I was actually just thinking about the Money Ball book and wondering how all the trades Beane made turned out in the long run when I remembered this one.

Gio Gonzalez? Lefties are at a premium but the guy gets tons of help from his stadium and division. I could see him with a 4.30 ERA or worse in pinstripes. A's would take Montero and another pitcher like Noesi most likely. I think Noesi can be nearly as good as Gonzalez and Montero should find a home somewhere. Not sure the Yankees would give up their top prospect even though they have lots of options at catcher.

I just don't think Gio is a nice fit for NYY. He won't look nearly as good. Yankees don't have a ton of top prospects and Oakland isn't looking to take on salary. Who else is there? Ivan Nova added in maybe?

why is gio not a nice fit for NYY? he is a lefty in yankees stadium

AL east is not that tough of a hitting division ... rangers > red sox in terms of more dangerous hitting team... why would he not be a nice fit, he is nasty, he pitches well against the sox and rays in his career and that is the yanks only competition right now in the division...

yankees have plenty of top prospects... BA has yankees having 6 of the top 50 prospects in baseball and 4 of the top 25 prospects in baseball and 2 in the top 10

Montero
Manny B
Betances
Romine
Gary sanchez
JR murhpy are all top 50 prospects...

add in noesi stud in the making who throws 95 with movement and Nova who was on pace for 17 wins if he stuck in the rotation 8 wins 2 weeks before the midway point in the year

yanks have a ton of catching and pitching prospects

A's can pencil in lots of guys to throw sub 4.00 ERAs in the rotation. Happens every year. I just wish the Yankees had a prospect that wasn't a pitcher or catcher. Suzuki is still young and should stick around for a while there. A's have bigger needs.

Gio also just got rocked in Yankee Stadium in his last start. Blue Jays and Red Sox are both dangerous lineups. Gio won't get to pitch in Oakland for half his games, or in LAA and Seattle for a good chunk of his road games. @TOR is a dangerous spot for pitchers, as is @BOS. Like I said, 4.30-4.45 is what I'd expect his ERA to be. We'll just have to wait and see how it turns out.

eh, i dont know...

so if he had a 4.30 era you think nova 4.00 era, garcia 3.20 era and both pitch in yankees stadium are better than Gio?

well whatever i dont think he will be a yankee but it would be nice to slot him in the playoff rotation

I think Nova could be just as good as Gio in a year or two. Still don't think he's ready but he could put up a 3.00 ERA in Oakland next season. I also think that Garcia will falter quite a bit in the 2nd half, but he's good for that division because he's been keeping the ball in the park. Gonzalez is much more long ball prone.

Just something to note... Gonzalez start last time out in Yankee Stadium was the 1st time the entire season he pitched in a park that caters to hitters other than when he got knocked around for 4 innings in Texas. The rest have been starts in pitchers or neutral parks.

yeah? i dont know jake i think gio is a pretty good pitcher i remember last year or the year before he had a brilliant outing in a thursday day game against the red sox and im like wow who is this kid?? stud...

you think garcia will falter in the 2nd half? it is now going into the final 1/3 of the year and he is sporting a pretty 3.23 ERA with 111 innings pitched, how much can he fall to? i think he has been great this year

oh and by no means am i saying garcia is a better pitcher than Gio...and by no means am i saying id rather have garcia over gio...
