The Phillies were on the verge of completing a deal Friday night that would send Houston's All-Star right fielder, Hunter Pence, to Philadelphia for four prospects.

Officials of two clubs who spoke with the Astros on Friday told ESPN.com the trade was expected to be finalized Friday night.

Although there had been talk earlier that the teams could expand the trade to include a third club, multiple sources said that by late Friday, only two-team scenarios were on the table.

The Astros were still insisting on a massive return for the 28-year-old Pence -- a package described by one executive who spoke with them as "two headline pieces and extra stuff."

The "headline pieces," in this case, would appear to be the Phillies top pitching prospect, Jarred Cosart, and their top hitting prospect, Jonathan Singleton. The Phillies made those two the centerpieces of their original offer for Pence early this week.

The Phillies' package does not include either outfielder Domonic Brown or rookie starter Vance Worley, sources said.
The Atlanta Braves also made a serious run at Pence, according to ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick. The Braves offered Houston four prospects -- two at the upper levels of the minors and two from lower-level clubs -- and were still exchanging names with Houston in the early evening Friday.
The Astros asked for Atlanta pitching prospect Mike Minor, a source said, but it's uncertain if the Braves were willing to include Minor in their trade package.

Their bats need to come alive or they could end up losing to San Fran again in the playoffs.....the two losses were pathetic (1 run each). I hope Pence can add some pop to their lineup....

Philly fans enjoy.

Must feel great to be on top of the sports world...considering the NBA AIN'T happening anytime soon.

Love the signing but I'll be PISSED if Brown really is the odd man out. Raul has been batting better lately but he's such a liability in the field. Pence in left, Vic in center, and Brown in right is what should happen. But Raul will stay in left with his awful fielding because he's making so much money and Brown will be sent down. FUCK. I expect Hunter to jack 15 the rest of the way.

Brown is not a very good outfielder either

really wanted the Pirates to get Pence. He wouldve fit in nicely with the young core. Looks like the price was too steep though.

Just heard this morning they were going after Jason Kubel. He would be another good fit too I think.

Sean, it looks like Brown will be the odd man out. He may come back later in the year....but his bat is awful. Ibanez is fine in the outfield and his bat has been very good lately (although he's still under .250). The whole lineup needs to pick it up offensively....

They didn't want to get rid of Brown, so I can imagine he's in their future plan. They are playing to win it THIS year. He'll likely be their RF for many years down the road (barring a trade or injury). I'm sure his bat will turn around.

I just know continuing to jerk around Brown like this isn't going to help his development. I understand wanting him to see every-day action in AAA but he's proven a capable hitter at that level already. While he isn't a plus defender yet, the skill set is there that he will be. Most 23 year olds are going to make a few bad reads on a ball here and there (the diving catch the other night against the Giants) but fact is he's already just as good, if not slightly better (better wheels and arm) in the field than Ibanez.

With Pence here, we could continue to develop Brown at the big-league level and still be winning a lot of games and going deep. But Ibanez HAS been hot and is also on the hook for double-figure millions unlike Brown.
