Texas Rangers at Detroit Tigers MLB Betting Preview

Division leaders lock horns on Tuesday night in the Motor City in MLB betting action, as the Detroit Tigers play host to the Texas Rangers.

The Tigers know that they have challenges coming from the Cleveland Indians, Chicago White Sox and maybe even the Minnesota Twins down the stretch this year, but coming into the month of August, they hold a 2.5-game lead in the AL Central.

Texas made some bold moves at the trade deadline, and though the Rangers are only in front of the Los Angeles Angels by two games in the AL West standings, they could be on the verge of a runaway.

Tuesday's tussle on the MLB odds gets underway at 4:05 p.m. (PT), with television coverage set for FOX Sports Detroit and FOX Sports Southwest. The pitching matchup should be a good one as Colby Lewis (10-8, 4.00 ERA) takes on Max Scherzer (11-6, 4.28 ERA).

Lewis guided the Rangers to five straight wins before his most recent start on July 27. The Minnesota Twins lit him up for four runs and eight hits in 6 2/3-innings of work at home on that day, but his bullpen didn't help matters at all in a 7-2 defeat.

Tuesday could mark the first game for Mike Adams, who was added to the Rangers' bullpen at the trade deadline for the stretch run this year. This is key for a team which had a bullpen ERA of 4.42 through July. Koji Uehara, who was picked up just a day before, has a 1.69 ERA this season, while Adams had thrown eight straight innings without a run allowed, dropping his ERA to 1.12.

Meanwhile, Scherzer has to be glad to be facing Texas, a team that he is 3-0 against in his career. The righty has a 3.48 ERA in his five outings against the Rangers.

The last four starts for the right-hander have been fantastic. He has allowed just six earned runs in his last 27 2/3-innings of work. A win on Tuesday night for Scherzer would tie a career high with 12 victories.

The Rangers come into this one sporting some amazing offensive numbers. They have 130 homers already on the campaign, third in baseball, and rank in the Top 5 in runs per game (5.03), batting average (.276), OPS (.783) and stolen bases (99). The team though, hasn't scored more than four runs in a game for five straight games after scoring 28 in two days against the Minnesota Twins at the outset of last week.

Detroit's offense has really been up and down. The team plated a dozen runs in the second game of a 4-game set against the Los Angeles Angels, only to score 11 runs in the other three games combined.

Texas has had no luck playing in the Motor City of late, going just 3-14 in the last 17 clashes. This year, these two teams have met once at both home team's venue. Detroit took two out of three in both series.

Strong thunderstorms are a possibility for Tuesday night's clash. There is only a 50 percent chance of rain, but those storms could bad. Temperatures are going to be in the low-80s by game time.

Tim Lincecum Leads Giants Against Arizona Diamondbacks

The battle for the National League West Division lead continues Tuesday when the San Francisco Giants host the Arizona Diamondbacks in the second of a three-game series. The defending World Series champion Giants will be happy to be back home for a 10-game homestand after dropping four of six on a recently completed road trip that ended Sunday.

Game time Tuesday at AT&T Park is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. (PT).

San Francisco started its road trip on a positive note by becoming the first team since June 4 to win two straight against the Philadelphia Phillies, but it concluded with three straight losses to the Cincinnati Reds. Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks won two in a row on the road against the Los Angeles Dodgers to pull within two games of first place in the NL West heading into Monday’s series opener.

Arizona has been involved in some high-scoring games lately, with all six previous games on a nine-game road trip going ‘over’ the total going into Monday. The road trip concludes against the Giants, who have kept five of the last six meetings with the Diamondbacks ‘under’ the total due to outstanding pitching.

The past six games between Arizona and San Francisco have averaged just six runs. The Diamondbacks have averaged 2.5 runs in those games. Dating back to the 2010 season, the ‘under’ has cashed in 11 of the last 13 meetings.

Giants ace Tim Lincecum (9-8, 2.78 ERA) was on the mound in two of those ‘unders’ which saw five total runs scored in two games. San Francisco won both of them, and he is 7-2 lifetime vs. Arizona with a 2.42 ERA.

Lincecum surprisingly has a losing record at AT&T Park this year, going 3-4 with a 3.45 ERA in 10 starts. However, he allowed only one run in each of his last two home starts totaling 13 innings, walking eight and striking out 13.

In fact, he has surrendered more than one run just once in his past seven outings. The ‘under’ is 5-2 during that stretch.

The Diamondbacks counter with Daniel Hudson (10-7, 3.81), who has lost his last two starts after going 7-0 in his previous 12 outings. He has finished the seventh inning only once in his past five starts after pitching seven or more five times in his previous six.

Hudson has lost both of his two starts to the Giants this season, dropping his career record against them to 2-2 with a 3.38 ERA. He is 4-4 on the road this year in 11 starts to go along with a 4.64 ERA. The ‘over’ is 5-1 in his last six outings overall, three of which have come away from home.

Tuesday’s weather forecast in San Francisco calls for a high temperature of 64 degrees under partly cloudy skies and a low of 55.

Indians In MLB Odds Battle At Boston Red Sox

Ubaldo Jimenez is expected to make his Cleveland Indians debut later this week. In the meantime, however, the Tribe can't wait for the newly-acquired pitcher to be the team's one-man savior when the series against the Boston Red Sox continues Tuesday evening.

Fenway Park will be packed for the 4:10 p.m. (PT) first pitch from Boston ace Josh Beckett. Cleveland will send young lefty David Huff to the mound.

Monday's series opener started a tough week on the road for the Indians who just completed a woeful 2-8 homestand with series losses to the White Sox, Angels and Royals. Cleveland started the week second in the AL Central, 2.5-games behind the Detroit Tigers.

A 3-game weekend series in Texas, when Jimenez is expected to make his first start for the Tribe, follows this 4-game set with the Red Sox. The Indians will then head home to host the Tigers, and three consecutive series against current division leaders could be a make-or-break stretch for the club.

Boston was leading the AL East standings with a 2-game cushion over the New York Yankees heading into this series. The Red Sox can't afford to look past the Indians with the Yanks in town this weekend. Cleveland held a 4-2 advantage in matchups with Boston this season, though they entered this series having won just twice in the last nine at Fenway.

Called up just after the all-star break, Huff (1-1, 0.71) is making his third start of the season. His offense and defense failed him this past Wednesday at home as a small MLB betting underdog vs. the Angels. Huff allowed just one earned run in 5 2/3 innings but came out on the short end of a 3-1 score with the Halos getting a no-hitter from Ervin Santana.

This will be the third career start against the Red Sox for Huff who is 0-2 in the previous two despite pitching well (2.38 ERA).

He'll need both his offense and defense clicking to have a shot against the Red Sox on their own diamond and with their top starter on the hill. Boston was 33-19 at Fenway entering this series, 7-2 in starts made at the venerable old field by Beckett (14-6, 2.17) who has a 1.88 ERA on his home mound.

Beckett is coming off one his worst starts in what has otherwise been a terrific rebound season for the veteran. Burdened with heavy 285 chalk, Beckett surrendered four runs (three earned) during seven innings of a 4-3 loss to the Royals last Thursday. The defeat snapped a 4-game win streak for Boston with Beckett on the hill.

He's 3-1 in his last four starts against Cleveland, recording a 3.50 ERA in 25 2/3 frames. That recent span includes a victory at Progressive Field back in May when Beckett was charged with one run in nearly seven innings of a 4-2 victory on a -145 MLB odds price.

Boston also took part in the recent flurry of deadline deals, adding left-handed starter Erik Bedard and infielder Mike Aviles in deals with Seattle and Kansas City respectively. The Red Sox are also expecting infielder Jed Lowrie (shoulder) to come off the disabled list this weekend.

A slight chance of rain is in the Beantown forecast for Tuesday afternoon, but skies are expected to clear by the evening. A light-WSW breeze (3B dugout to right-center) is in the forecast with temps in the low 80s at first pitch.

The series continues Wednesday night with an expected pitching matchup between Cleveland's Carlos Carrasco and Boston's Tim Wakefield who will be looking for his 200th major league win.

Lincecum tries to snap Giants 4-game skid

ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS (60-49, +14.0 Units)

at SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS (61-48, +8.0 Units)

First pitch: Tuesday, 10:15 p.m. EDT
Line: San Francisco -155, Arizona +145, Total: 6

The Giants will send Tim Lincecum to the mound to handle damage control as the Giants look to avoid a fifth straight loss. The Diamondbacks are looking to win their fourth in a row and tie up the tight NL West race. Arizona will be sending the young, but effective Daniel Hudson to the mound Tuesday night. The Diamondbacks got a great pitching performance out of Ian Kennedy in Monday’s series opener as Kennedy threw eight strong innings, allowing only two runs on six hits, while striking out seven in a 5-2 win.

Arizona has been a decent bet this year against its fellow NL West foes (21-18, +5.3 Units), and has won six straight games on the heels of scoring five-plus runs in the previous contest. Arizona has also had a lot of success in Daniel Hudson’s past 18 starts by winning 13 of them. The D-backs have not fared too well in low-scoring pitching matchups, as they are 7-11 when the total score is seven runs or less. San Francisco loves a good pitching matchup with a 27-15 mark at home when the total is less than seven. The Giants are 14-3 in Lincecum’s past 17 starts against a team with a winning record. Expect SAN FRANCISCO to snap its losing skid and win at home with their ace.

Here are two more FoxSheets trends backing the favored Giants, who are 33-13 (+18.0 Units) against Arizona in the past three seasons, including 17-5 (+10.2 Units) at home.

SAN FRANCISCO is 85-52 (62.0%, +29.7 Units) against the money line after batting .250 or worse over a 20 game span over the last 2 seasons. The average score was SAN FRANCISCO 3.9, OPPONENT 3.1 - (Rating = 2*).

SAN FRANCISCO is 77-49 (61.1%, +26.0 Units) against the money line vs. teams averaging 2.75 or less extra base hits per game in the second half of the season over the last 2 seasons. The average score was SAN FRANCISCO 4.1, OPPONENT 3.4 - (Rating = 2*).

Daniel Hudson (10-7, 3.81 ERA) looks to get back on track after losing two straight (12.1 IP, 17 H, 9 ER). Hudson also is seeking his first win against the Giants this year, having lost the first two starts against them (4.97 ERA) after winning both meetings in 2010 (1.93 ERA). Hudson has had control problems versus San Francisco in 2011, walking six batters in only 12.2 innings pitched. Hudson was phenomenal in May and June going 8-1 with a 2.73 ERA, but he was only 1-2 with a 5.04 ERA in July and allowed opponents to hit .302 off him. Justin Upton (.302 BA, 21 HR, 65 RBI) has been sizzling, extending his hitting streak to 13 games on Monday. He’s batting .451 (23-for-51) with six homers and 19 RBI during the streak.

Tim Lincecum (9-8, 2.78 ERA) has owned Arizona in the past, going 7-2 with a 2.42 ERA and 130 K in 108 innings. He has also been terrific of late, with 3-1 record and a microscopic 1.08 ERA in his past four starts. Lincecum needs to get the usually strong Giants pitching back on track after allowing an uncharacteristic 25 runs (5.54 ERA) in the past four games.

Lynx seek team-record 7th straight win Tuesday

PHOENIX MERCURY (11-7)

at MINNESOTA LYNX (13-4)

Tip-off: Tuesday, 8:00 p.m. EDT
Line: Minnesota -5.5, Total: 187

Minnesota has a chance for a franchise record-setting seventh straight win, as well as a chance to separate a little more from the rest of the Western Conference, when it hosts Phoenix on Tuesday night.

These teams have each won on the other’s home floor this year. But with SU wins in six of its past eight road games, including an impressive victory in New York on Saturday, expect PHOENIX to win the rubber match.

The FoxSheets have a three-star trend to support picking the Mercury:

Play Against - Home favorites of 3.5 to 9.5 points (MINNESOTA) - after 6 or more consecutive wins, well rested team - playing 5 or less games in 14 days. (26-6 since 1997.) (81.2%, +19.4 units. Rating = 3*).

On July 20, the Lynx won 106-98 in Phoenix behind 25 points from Seimone Augustus. But Minnesota’s last lost was at home to the Mercury, when it blew an 11-point fourth-quarter lead and was torched by Diana Taurasi’s 27 points in a 112-105 loss.

The Mercury have won four of five (SU and ATS) over the Lynx, averaging a whopping 109.2 PPG in these five meetings.

Minnesota kept its winning streak alive with a comeback win. On Sunday, the Lynx came back from 12 down in the second half, and Lindsay Whalen’s jumper with 1.5 seconds left gave them their most consecutive wins since 2004. Phoenix snapped a three-game losing streak (SU and ATS) with its win over New York.

Tuesday’s betting tips: Price burning Jays bettors

Who’s hot

MLB: The over is 13-3 in Jaime Garcia’s last 16 starts for the St. Louis Cardinals.

MLB: The Tampa Bay Rays are 9-0 in David Price’s last nine starts against the Toronto Blue Jays.

WNBA: The over is 8-1 in New York’s last nine road games.

Who’s not

MLB: Texas was just 3-14 in its last 17 games in Detroit heading into Monday's action.

MLB: The under is 1-9 in San Diego’s last 10 home games.

WNBA: The over is 1-8-1 in San Antonio’s last 10 games overall.

Key stat

23 – Atlanta Braves second baseman Dan Uggla extended his hitting streak to 23 games with a solo home run Monday night. Uggla, who was hitting .180 heading into July, is now batting .341 during his hitting streak with nine homers and 19 RBIs.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Aramis Ramirez, Chicago Cubs – Ramirez sat out Monday’s night with a quad injury and his status for Tuesday’s game is unknown. Ramirez is hitting .286 for the Cubs with 19 homers and 63 RBIs.

Game of the day

St. Louis Cardinals at Milwaukee Brewers (-130, 7.5)

Notable quotable

“There are not a lot of guys like Osi. It’s not like you can just go and pick up one of those guys off the street, but again as of right now, he’s still under contract with the Giants and that’s hopefully how it will be for the rest of the year.” – New York Giants defensive end Justin Tuck on Osi Umenyiora. The Giants have granted Umenyiroa, who tied for the team lead in sacks (11.5) and led the league in forced fumbles (10), permission to seek a trade following their contract dispute. New York’s currently set at +2000 to win Super Bowl XLVI.

Notes and tips

Tiger Woods played his first round since May Monday at Atlanta Athletic Club, where next week's PGA Championship will be held. "I had a blast out there on a wonderful golf course," Woods said in a posting on his website. "It should be a great test for a major championship." He's currently set around +1200 for next week's tournament.

The San Antonio Silver Stars are still stinging from a 1-point loss to Minnesota, but they’ve really turned it around after a terrible month. San Antonio jumped out of the gate to a 7-1 start against the spread, but dropped five of six games against the number in July before covering in four of their last five. "This game doesn't make or break us. There's still a lot of basketball left to be played," guard Jia Perkins told reporters about the teams latest loss that still got supporters to the pay window as 3-point underdogs. "We still have the whole second half. ... We have a chance to redeem ourselves."

San Francisco Giants second baseman Freddy Garcia finally threw in the towel and will undergo season-ending surgery to repair the labrum in his right shoulder. Jeff Keppinger will continue to fill in at second base after being acquired from the Astros last month.

Tuesday's six-pack

-- Ohio U was voted America's #1 party school, an award schools must secretly love, even if publicly they pretend to dislike it. Applications have to go up after you get this kind of publicity.

-- Derrek Lee homered twice in his first game as a Pirate.

-- When Scott Hairston homered in 7th/9th inning Sunday, he became just second Met ever to homer twice in a game he didn't start. Some guy named Hawk Taylor (backup catcher) did it back in 1964.

-- Mets tied game on 2-out HR in 9th inning for second day in row, but lost again in last inning, as Florida's Stanton hit 10th-inning grand slam.

-- John Mayberry also hit a game-tying HR with two out in ninth, and then Victorino homered in 10th as Phillies won 4-3 at Colorado.

-- Jesus Guzman is 26-80 (.325) this season when playing 1B for San Diego; other four guys Padres have used at first are 89-458 (.194).

****************

Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

13) Do you realize how much CC Sabathia has the Bronx Bombers by the throat? He can opt out of his contract after this season and become a free agent. If he were to leave, what would the Bronx rotation look like? Burnett-Garcia-Nova-Colon-Hughes? They have to give him whatever he wants after this season, and both sides know it.

Sabathia will be younger this winter than Cliff Lee was last winter, and he is a better pitcher than Lee, so he's going to get a bigger contract than the one Philadelphia gave to Lee.

12) Funny thing about the two new ballparks in New York City. The Bronx ballpark is too small, so pitchers don’t want to pitch there. Citi Field is too damn big, so no hitters want to play there. Good thing the two stadiums cost over $2B combined. Brilliant!!!!

11) I was genuinely surprised to see that Phoenix is now the 6th-largest city in America, in terms of population.

10) Through Sunday’s games, Braves’ leadoff hitters were 26th in majors in on-base percentage, which is why the Michael Bourn trade is so big for them.

9) Jim Fassel’s son John is the new special teams’ coach for the Raiders.

8) Jim Thome hit his 597th career homer Sunday in Oakland; only seven players have ever hit 600, so this is a big deal, even though ESPN doesn’t think so, and I doubt HBO is doing a documentary about it.

7) Coolest home run music is in Arlington, where they play music from The Natural anytime a Ranger hits a home run. 27 years later and that music is still very cool.

6) Apparently Clay Buchholz has a stress fracture in his lower back and now can’t return until at least August 18, which is why they went out and traded for the highly suspect Eric Bedard.

5) Baseball scouts were surprised Cincinnati didn’t make any moves at the trade deadline, because they have some good prospects down on the farm that could’ve gotten them some immediate help.

4) Two-a-day workouts have been eliminated from NFL training camps, which makes players very happy and probably has Vince Lombardi turning over in his grave.

3) Carolina Panthers gave Olindo Mare $12M for four years, which is a lot of money for a kicker.

2) Stupid Rule of the Day: NBA coaches can’t go to college basketball practices during the lockout. Why? You mean Doc Rivers can’t go to Duke and watch his son practice? Makes no sense.

1) Can someone explain to me why the Angels can’t bunt for a hit down 3-0 in the 8th inning in Detroit? Its only 3-0; they get a bunt hit and a walk, and the tying run is at the plate. Who gives a rat’s ass about the no-hitter until the winner of the game has been decided?

Lady luck: Tuesday's best WNBA bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Phoenix Mercury at Minnesota Lynx (-6, 187.5)

The Minnesota Lynx and Phoenix Mercury may be battling out for top spot in the Western Conference all the way down the stretch in the regular season.

The Lynx took the last meeting between the two clubs, dropping the Mercury 106-98 as 4.5-point underdog and now lead the Mercury by two games after coming back to sneak past the Silver Stars on a last-second bucket by Lindsay Whalen.

They were down 12 points at the break and trailing in the second half isn’t something the Lynx are used to.

"You don't know until you've been in that spot," Taj McWilliams-Franklin told reporters. "This is the first time we've been down and had to come back. The games we lost, we were up and let the other teams come back on us. It was our first real challenge on the season.”

We see them building upon that.

Pick: Lynx

New York Liberty at Atlanta Dream (-4.5, 164.5)

If the Atlanta Dream are going to keep making up ground after a terrible start to the season, they’re going to need a lot from Angel McCoughtry.

The Dream saw their five-game winning streak snapped by Connecticut on Sunday falling 99-92 as a 4.5-point underdog. McCoughtry did her part by pouring in 36 points, including 19 in the final frame, despite the fact that she missed the first seven minutes of the game after feeling ill.

She has now cracked the 30-point plateau three times in the last four games.

"It might be one of the damndest games I've seen since I've been in this league," Sun coach Mike Thibault said. "The Dream shot 66 percent in the second half and lost."

We see Atlanta getting back on track at home.

Pick: Dream

Tuesday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

Ricky Romero, Toronto Blue Jays (8-9, 3.08 ERA)

Romero was nearly untouchable in his last start, giving up just four hits over 8 1/3 innings while striking out seven in a 3-0 win over Baltimore.

Romero now has a 3.05 ERA in his last three starts and has 25 strikeouts over that span. The lefty now has 15 quality starts in 21 outings this year.

Max Scherzer, Detroit Tigers (11-6, 4.28 ERA)

Scherzer took a hard-luck loss last week against the White Sox, only giving up a two-run dinger over six innings. That loss dropped him to 2-2 over his last four starts, but he hasn’t allowed more than two runs in any of those outings.

Scherzer and the Tigers are set as early -110 favorites Tuesday against Texas and the Missouri native is 3-0 lifetime against the Rangers.

Slumping

Chris Capuano, New York Mets (9-10, 4.51 ERA)

Capuano hasn’t been all bad lately, but needs to figure out a way to avoid big innings.

He was rotten in the first inning of his last start against the Reds before cruising along getting beat up again in the sixth inning during a 10-9 loss. Capuano was charged with six earned runs over 5 1/3 innings and has now allowed at least four runs in each of his last three trips to the hill.

Bruce Chen, Kansas City Royals (5-4, 4.29 ERA)

While we normally don’t throw guys in the Slumping section after just one poor start, we don’t see pitchers charged with 10 earned runs in an outing either.

Chen was hammered for the 10-spot over just four innings of work during a 12-5 loss to the Red Sox. He gave up three dingers and walked three.

Rounding the bases: This week's best MLB trends
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every week, we update you on who's hot, who's not and situational betting spots in Major League Baseball.

HOT TEAM: Milwaukee Brewers

THIS SEASON: 60-49
LAST WEEK: 6-0

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: Home to the Cardinals for three, at the Astros for three.

THE SKINNY: The pitching has been incredible for Milwaukee backers. The club threw up two shutouts in those six games, and allowed just 10 runs total in that span.

On offense, the usual names apply, as Prince Fielder, with three hits on Sunday, took a .296 average into Monday’s action, as well as 24 home runs and 76 RBIs, and Ryan Braun, with two hits himself on Sunday, was at .322 with 25 doubles, 66 runs and 19 stolen bases.

The Brewers seem to have the right mix of youth and experience, talent and potential, and above all else, they seem to have the most incentive to win this division. Keep that in mind over the next two weeks, as they butt heads with both the Pirates and Cardinals -- their chief competition -- a total of nine times.

COLD TEAM: Pittsburgh Pirates

THIS SEASON: 54-52
LAST WEEK: 2-5

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: Home to the Cubs for four, home to the Padres for three.

THE SKINNY: Just as the Brewers are streaking, the Pirates are slumping. Or, perhaps, it’s just reality hitting as this offensively challenged club ran into a couple of teams who can pitch last week, and Pittsburgh paid dearly for it.

Sure, the Pirates were struck with a little bad luck, when Julio Lugo and the Braves literally stole one from them in 19 innings on Tuesday. But without any consistent bats to speak of, this was bound to happen at some point.

There is some good news, though: Pittsburgh comes home to face two teams long out of contention, Chicago and San Diego. And after a few deadline deals, the Pirates officially welcomed Derrek Lee (.246 average, 12 home runs, 41 RBIs) and Ryan Ludwick (.238, 11 HRs, 64 RBIs) to the fold on Monday afternoon at PNC Park. Now, neither player is on a tear this season. But they have produced in the past, and they know about pennant races.

And if nothing else, Pittsburgh -- after 18 consecutive losing seasons -- deserves credit for at least going for it this year.

OVER TEAM: Minnesota Twins

O/U THIS SEASON: 50-52-6
O/U LAST WEEK: 5-2

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: At the Angels for three, home to the White Sox for three.

THE SKINNY: Minnesota has become a quality over buy of late. In the last seven games, they’ve scored 38 runs, which helps, but it’s the pitching that’s been the key.

The Twins allowed 54 runs in that same span. With a 4.34 team ERA, things don’t figure to get much better for Minnesota, and that’s good news for over players.

Not to mention, on offense, while Justin Morneau is still out, at least Joe Mauer is trying to make some strides at the dish. And there's always Michael Cuddyer (.299 average, 16 home runs, 55 RBIs), who is having a career year.

Keep the Twins on your radar, moving forward, as the dog days hit. While other teams struggle for overs, this team may be among your best bets.

UNDER TEAM: Los Angeles Angels

O/U THIS SEASON: 41-56-12
O/U LAST WEEK: 2-5

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: Home to the Twins for three, home to the Mariners for three.

THE SKINNY: The pesky Angels are hanging around and making the Rangers earn everything in the AL West, which shouldn’t be a surprise. After all, they’re used to being here.

And what’s important, at this point, for under players, is that they’re used to playing in tight, playoff-like games. Last week was a perfect example, as they won contests with scores of 2-1, 3-1, and 5-1. And along the way, Ervin Santana authored a no-hitter.

He’s not the only pitcher pacing the Angels, as they allowed three runs or less in seven of the nine games leading into Tuesday’s series opener vs. Minnesota.

On offense, there are some Angels having good seasons -- Mark Trumbo has 19 home runs and 55 RBIs -- but a .252 team batting average isn’t going to get it done. And when Erick Aybar is third on your team with 43 RBIs, unders are going to be your team specialty. Keep the Angels on your under list for the foreseeable future.

Hot lines: Tuesday's best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Texas Rangers at Detroit Tigers (-110, 8.5)

The Texas Rangers put up enough runs to make up for a lot of their deficiencies, but offense can come and go as the standings tighten down the stretch. That’s why they made some aggressive moves to help out their bullpen before the trade deadline.

The Rangers went into Monday’s game with a 4.35 bullpen ERA – 27th in the bigs. They hope Mike Adams and Koji Uehara can help out in that area.

"You look up, and I think we're in a dogfight for the division with the Angels," general manager Jon Daniels told reporters of the deals. "They're a very good club. They've got a good pitching staff. If we're fortunate enough to get to the postseason, then that's a dogfight every night. You're going to need multiple guys to pitch at the back of the bullpen and get big outs in big spots."

Adams and Uehara will definitely help, but Texas always has a tough time in Detroit. We’ll stick with the under.

Pick: Under

Arizona Diamondbacks at San Francisco Giants (-155, 6)

The Diamondbacks went into Monday’s action with an offense that produced 4.56 runs per game – good for seventh in the majors. That didn’t stop them from dipping into the minor leagues for some more offensive help.

Arizona promoted 23-year-old Paul Goldschmidt ahead of Monday’s action and even though it’s a big jump from Double-A Mobile to the show, he might provide a big spark.

Goldschmidt was hitting .306 with 30 homers, 21 RBIs and 82 walks in 103 games this season. Maybe just as importantly, he has cut his strikeouts from 27 percent of his at-bats last year at Single-A to 20 percent this season.

It remains to be seen if the kid can hit in the big leagues, but we don’t like his chances against The Freak. Lincecum finally looks to be coming around with a 0.95 ERA over his last three trips to the hill.
