Rangers Continue MLB Odds Set At Detroit Tigers

MLB betting action will be hot and heavy Wednesday night in Motown, where the Texas Rangers will take on the Detroit Tigers in a battle of division leaders.

This will be the second of the 3-game set at Comerica Park. First pitch is scheduled to be thrown at 4:05 p.m. (PT), and there will be live television coverage of the clash on FOX Sports Detroit and FOX Sports Southwest.

Texas is rolling out its new look bullpen in this series after acquiring Koji Uehara and Mike Adams in separate trades. Detroit, on the other hand, will send a brand new starting pitcher to the bump Wednesday night. Doug Fister was picked up by manager Jim Leyland and company at the trade deadline, and he'll be making his debut in a Tigers uniform on Hump Day.

If you take one look at Fister's 3-12 record in the first half of the season with the Seattle Mariners, you can't help but be unimpressed. This came on the heels of a 6-14 campaign in 2010. However, Detroit GM Dave Dombrowski saw some other stats that are impossible to ignore as well.

Fister has gotten some of the worst run support in baseball this year. The M's haven't provided him with more than five runs in a game since a 13-3 win over these Tigers on April 19, and you have to go back to the beginning of last September for the time before that. Since September 7, 2010, Fister has only gotten a whopping 2.16 runs of support per game. In fact, he has gotten two runs or fewer an insane 20 times in 25 starts.

The former Fresno State star hasn't pitched well, but Fister hasn't pitched so poorly to be 3-12 either. He has a 3.33 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP, and batters are only hitting .252 against him. Fister also has three complete games this year. He lost all three.

The righty isn't a big time strikeout guy, but with four Ks on Wednesday, Fister will have broken a career high for strikeouts, 93 set last season.

Opposing him will be a much more proven commodity, Matt Harrison. This is one of the many arms that have come out of the Rangers' farm system ready to really make a big time impact in the majors. Harrison is 9-7 this year with a 2.94 ERA, and he is clearly having the season of his life.

The southpaw allowed just one run in 7 1/3-innings of work last week against the Minnesota Twins, marking the fifth straight start that he has had in which the Rangers proved victorious on the MLB lines.

Run support has been a bit of a problem of late for Harrison a well. The Rangers lineup has only provided 3.0 runs per game in his last six starts, but we know that that will change at some point since he has a team in front of him averaging over five runs per game.

Harrison is just 1-3 in his career with a 7.11 ERA against the Tigers.

Detroit had won 14 of the last 17 meetings of these two teams at Comerica Park entering Tuesday's contest.

Cloudy skies should give way to a nice evening in the Motor City, as temperatures could drop into the low-70s by the time the night is over. There is a minimal chance of rain.

The final game of this 3-game series will be played on Thursday afternoon before the Rangers head home to open a series with the Cleveland Indians while the Tigers travel to Kansas City for the weekend.

Cardinals, Brewers Finish MLB Betting Series

The Milwaukee Brewers are starting to take control of the National League Central Division and will try to create more breathing room in their series finale against the St. Louis Cardinals. Wednesday’s first pitch is scheduled for 11:10 a.m. (PT) at Miller Park.

Offseason moves and trade deadline deals have made the Brewers a serious threat to make a run at the World Series this year. Milwaukee won its seventh game in a row Monday night, capturing a 6-2 victory and extending its division lead to 3.5 games.

The Brewers are an impressive 40-14 (+22.8 units) at home this season and 13-4-0 in series play. It’s also important to point out down the stretch that the club has lost consecutive games at Miller Park just once during the 2011 campaign.

Randy Wolf (7-8, 3.44 ERA) aims to win consecutive games for the first time since June, coming off a 4-0 home victory over the miserable Astros. He tossed seven shutout frames and scattered four hits in the appearance. Wolf has tallied a solid 4-2 mark and 3.17 ERA in 10 home starts this year, which is an improvement from the losing 5-6 record and 4.24 ERA he finished with last year at the venue.

In 15 career starts versus the Cardinals, the left-hander has compiled a 5-7 record and 3.79 ERA, including a 6-0 road defeat on May 6. He allowed six runs and seven hits over five frames in that particular effort.

Total bettors will be interested in knowing that the ‘under’ is 14-3 in Wolf’s last 17 outings versus NL Central opponents.

St. Louis was also busy during last week’s trade deadline and will be focusing on putting together a win streak to close out the season. In looking at past results, the Cardinals haven’t put together a stretch of more than four wins the entire year.

First baseman Albert Pujols is going to have a lot of say about who wins the division and is a force to be reckoned with in August. Since his career began in 2001, Pujols has managed to hit .345 with 81 home runs during the month.

Edwin Jackson (8-7, 3.78 ERA) was one of the team’s most recent acquisitions and the move has already paid dividends in a 9-2 home victory over the Chicago Cubs on July 29. He allowed just a single run and seven hits over seven strong innings. Jackson has actually won four of his last five starts, giving up 11 runs and 34 hits in 35 frames over that span.

The 27-year-old will be making just his third lifetime start versus the Brewers, coming in with an even 1-1 mark and 3.00 ERA. He suffered his only loss against them on May 7, 2010 as a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks, giving up three runs and six hits in seven innings at Chase Field.

Home plate umpire Gary Darling gives the Cardinals a decided advantage with road teams tallying a 15-7 record in his 22 games behind the dish this year. The ‘under’ is also 14-8 in those contests.

Weather forecasts suggest partly cloudy skies and game-time temperatures to reach the low-80s. The Miller Park roof is likely to be left open under such conditions and a northeasterly wind of 10-15 mph is expected (left to right).

New York Yankees, Chicago White Sox MLB Betting Preview

The New York Yankees take on the Chicago White Sox in the third game of their four-game series this Wednesday night. Both teams are looking to gain ground in their respective division title hunts.

U.S. Cellular Field will play host to the game, which is scheduled to start at 5:10 p.m. (PT) and will be televised by ESPN. AJ Burnett is set to take the mound against Gavin Floyd.

Heading into Tuesday’s action, the Yankees were one game behind the Boston Red Sox in the AL East standings and the White Sox were third in the AL Central, 4.5 games behind Detroit. After splitting their first four game series with Chicago 2-2, New York took the early lead in this one in a 3-2 win with CC Sabathia on the mound.

New York (65-42) appears to have a playoff spot fairly well in hand with a seven-game lead in the Wild Card race, but they’d much rather enter the playoffs with the American League’s best record and another AL East Title. The Yankees are looking to carry the momentum of a nice 7-3 homestand (+1.95 units) into this road trip that started with a win Monday night behind the pitching of CC Sabathia.

Burnett (8-9, 4.23 ERA) was on the mound for two of those three losses during the homestand. In nine starts since June 13, Burnett is just 2-5 and hasn’t received more than five runs of support in any of those outings. The Yankees are 4-5 (-3.85 units) over the slump.

Burnett hasn’t fared well against the White Sox over the course of his career at 2-5 with a 4.84 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP in eight starts. He did pitch eight strong innings allowing only one run when these two teams met back on April 25, but was outdueled by Phil Humber and lost as a 185 favorite.

At 52-55, the 2011 season has been a frustrating one for the Chicago White Sox, who have struggled with their offense and bullpen issues all season long. Still, with no one grabbing a stranglehold of the AL Central, the White Sox are still alive if they can start stringing some wins together.

Sending Floyd (9-9, 3.96 ERA) to the mound may be a good place to start. Floyd has been outstanding in three second-half starts, going 3-0 (+3.85 units) while allowing just two earned runs over 22 1/3 innings.

Floyd’s red-hot start out of the all-star break is a sharp contrast to the slump he was in going into it, as Chicago had lost in his previous six starts (-8.25 units). Floyd won as a 120 underdog in his last meeting against the Yankees on April 26, fanning 10 over eight innings and giving up just two runs.

The total has gone ‘under’ in five of the last six games between these two teams.

New York is 28-20 on the road (+6.35 units). Chicago is 24-29 at home (-14.27 units).

New York has Alex Rodriguez (knee) on the disabled list.

Weather reports suggest a nice day in the Chicago area with a north wind up to 11 mph. Ivan Nova and Philip Humber are expected to take the mound in the final game of the series on Thursday

Halladay looks to pitch Phils to 6th straight win

PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES (70-39, +15.8 Units)

at COLORADO ROCKIES (51-59, -21.0 Units)

First pitch: Wednesday, 3:10 p.m. EDT
Line: Philadelphia -185, Colorado +175, Total: 8

The Phillies are lapping the rest of the National League, and Wednesday is shaping up to be more of the same when they play go for a three-game sweep of the Rockies in Colorado.

The Phillies have won five straight and 11 of 14 and will have Roy Halladay going against struggling Rockies right-hander Jason Hammel on Wednesday. The Phils have won 12 of Halladay’s past 13 starts, and the reigning Cy Young Award winner has been dominant in day games (8-1, 2.06 ERA). The Rockies have dropped seven of 10 overall, and six of their past eight home games. Hammel has a 7.00 ERA over his past five starts, a 5.10 ERA at home, and a 6.55 ERA in day games. Despite the relatively small payout for a road team, the pick is PHILADELPHIA. The FoxSheets have a three-star trend working in the Phillies’ favor:

PHILADELPHIA is 60-20 (75.0%, +35.1 Units) against the money line vs. teams whose hitters strike out 7 or more times/game in the second half of the season over the last 2 seasons. The average score was PHILADELPHIA 5.5, OPPONENT 3.6 - (Rating = 3*).

Halladay (13-4, 2.44 ERA) has been incredible for a second straight season. He hasn’t faced the Rockies this year, but saw them twice in 2010, holding them to three runs (two earned) over 14.1 innings. He did lose in his only Coors Field start though, allowing all three of those runs and 10 base runners in 6.1 innings.

Hammel (6-10, 4.65 ERA) pitched well in San Diego Friday (6.1 innings, two runs in a victory). He’s faced the Phils four times (once in the playoffs) since joining the Rockies in 2009, going 1-1 with a 6.27 ERA. He worked into the seventh just once in those starts, and three of those outings were Colorado losses.

Yankees aim for 6th straight win vs. slumping White Sox

NEW YORK YANKEES (66-42, +9.8 Units)

at CHICAGO WHITE SOX (52-56, -8.1 Units)

First pitch: Wednesday, 8:10 p.m. EDT
Line: New York -110, Chicago +100, Total: 9

The Yankees look to solidify their spot in the playoffs while pushing the White Sox further out of the playoff picture when they visit Chicago on Wednesday night.

After Tuesday night’s 6-0 victory, the Yankees have won five straight and eight of 10. Meanwhile, the White Sox have dropped four in a row. But considering the strong performance of Sox starter Gavin Floyd since the All-Star break (3-0, 0.81 ERA over three starts) and Yankee right-hander A.J. Burnett’s increasingly shaky performance (0-3, 4.83 ERA in five July starts), CHICAGO is the pick on Wednesday.

The FoxSheets provide a four-star trend working against the Yanks:

Play Against - Any team (N.Y. YANKEES) - red hot hitting team - batting .333 or better over their last 5 games against opponent with a hot starting pitcher- WHIP <= 0.800 over his last 3 starts. (35-9 since 1997.) (79.5%, +26.5 units. Rating = 4*).

The FoxSheets also show a highly-rated trend backing the UNDER as the play.

N.Y. YANKEES are 16-2 UNDER (88.9%, +13.9 Units) after 3 or more consecutive wins this season. The average score was NY YANKEES 2.8, OPPONENT 2.8 - (Rating = 4*).

Floyd (9-9, 3.96 ERA) had been sold during the first half of the year, but he’s really turned it on since the All-Star break. He allowed two runs (one earned) over 7.2 innings in Detroit, then threw 7.2 shutout innings in Cleveland, followed by seven innings of one-run ball against Boston last Friday. He has a 16-to-3 K/BB ratio since the All-Star break. Over the past three seasons, Floyd is 2-1 with a 3.06 ERA in five starts against the Yankees. The Sox are 4-1 in those games, including 3-0 in Floyd’s starts at U.S. Cellular Field.

The past month has not gone well for Burnett (8-9, 4.23 ERA). After averaging just 3.8 walks per 9 innings through the end of June, he’s walked 5.2 per 9 innings over his past five starts. He failed to get out of the sixth in three of those starts. On Friday, he struck out 10 over eight innings against Baltimore, but also allowed four runs and two homers in the Yankees’ only loss of that series. Since joining the Yankees in 2009, Burnett has been shaky against the White Sox: 0-3 with a 9.00 ERA over three starts. However, he held them to one run over eight innings in a hard-luck loss in April.

Despite the absence of All-Star 3B Alex Rodriguez (knee) for nearly a month, the Yankees haven’t missed a beat offensively. Since A-Rod went down, they’re fourth in the majors with 5.43 runs per game.

Run Line & ML Standings

August 3, 2011

The 2011 MLB campaign is well past its halfway point and heading into the far turn as we enter August. And, much like the won-loss standings we see every day in the newspapers, the Run Line and Money Line standings are developing a familiar look as well.

Since the All-Star break, the cream has started to rise to the top, evidenced by Money Line surges by the likes of Philadelphia (+416 since July 18), Milwaukee (+517 that span, although most of the success coming at home), the Angels (+406), and Yankees (+391). Meanwhile, early-season contenders Seattle (-553 since July 18, including the last stages of a debilitating 17-game straight-up losing streak), Cleveland (-541 the past two weeks), and Pittsburgh (-419 the same span) are beginning to lose traction.

There are still a few surprises in the mix, none more so than surging Arizona, now with the best Money Line mark for the season in all of MLB at +1663, with the Phillies close behind at +1653. The Diamondbacks also rate as the best on the Money Line since July 18 at +579. Interestingly, all of the NL East is on the plus side as of August 2, save Florida, barely in the red at -10. On the bottom end, it's no surprise that Seattle's fade over the past couple of weeks has the Mariners with the worst MLB mark (-553) since July 18, but contenders Texas (-534 same span) and Atlanta (-430) suddenly have some issues as well.

On the Run Line side, note some of the ongoing woeful season-long numbers posted by Baltimore (-3684), Houston (-2982), the Dodgers (-2148), and, surprisingly, Milwaukee (-2156), hindered by its poor road form. And while floundering lately on the Money Line, the Rangers still have the best season-long Run Line results (+1671) in baseball.

Following are the complete MLB Money Line and Run Line standings through games of August 2, with the recent numbers since July 18 also included.

MLB: St. Louis is just 3-13 in its last 16 games as an underdog.

MLB: Toronto has won just seven of its last 32 games in Tampa Bay.

WNBA: The under is 2-7-2 in Los Angeles’ last 11 games.

Key stat

57.5 – Over the last month, MLB road underdogs have cashed in on 57.5 percent of their games on the runline ahead of Tuesday night’s action.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Paul Konerko, Chicago White Sox – Konerko was out of the lineup again Tuesday after being hit in the back of the leg by a pitch Sunday. The club hopes he will be able to play Wednesday, but won’t know until closer to game time. Konerko is hitting .305 with 25 homers and 76 RBIs.

Game of the day

Arizona Diamondbacks at San Francisco Giants (-155, 7.5)

Notable quotable

"If they're tired of my big-playmaking ability, maybe they'll ship me out. Maybe they'll keep me. I don't know. Who knows? I want to be where I'm wanted. If I'm wanted here, then here. If I'm not appreciated here, then life goes on, and I move on." – Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Asante Samuel on his role with the team following the additions of Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Nnamdi Asomugha. Oddsmakers have dropped Philly’s Super Bowl odds to +600 after their free agent spending spree.

Notes and tips

The Los Angeles Sparks have the over riding an 11-4-3 streak heading into Wednesday’s game against the Connecticut Sun, which is easily the best over record in the WNBA. Interestingly enough, the Sparks and Sun have played over the total in seven of their last nine meetings. L.A. is currently set as a 2.5-point home underdog Wednesday with the over/under at 158.

Florida Marlins shortstop Hanley Ramirez left Tuesday’s game with a shoulder injury after diving in an attempt to catch a Angel Pagan single. Ramirez was in obvious pain on the field and was unable to move his arm afterward. Early speculation is that he may have suffered a sprained shoulder. Ramirez is hitting .242 with 10 homers 45 RBIs and 20 stolen bases this season.

Wednesday's six-pack

-- Playoff-type game at Miller Park, with Cardinals winning 8-7 in 11 innings on a Berkman bloop single. Very intense game; Cardinal catcher Molina went ballistic and got tossed after being called out on strikes.

-- When Francisco Rodriguez had 62 saves for the Angels in 2008, only 20 of those 62 came as a result of a 1-2-3 inning.

-- Oakland pitchers lead MLB with 16 errors; understandable since they don't have five or six weeks of spring train--- oh wait, they do?????

-- Pirates are now 1-7 since getting hosed in the 19th inning last week in Atlanta; losing twice at home to the Cubs isn't good.

-- Mets lost their last four games, scoring a total of eight runs, as they're feeling the effect of trading Beltran for a Class A pitcher.

-- Dodgers are 8-3 vs San Diego this season, blanking the Padres four times, including three 1-0 decisions. Total of 54 runs have been scored in the eleven games between these division rivals.

**********************

Wednesday's List of 13: Random midweek stuff........

13) How do the NBA and its Players Association go one month without meeting face-to-face? You get a feeling this is going to be an ugly situation that might not be resolved at this time next year.

12) Then there is the WNBA, which has a salary floor of $819,000 per team, a cap of $852,000. In the NBA, chauffeurs make that much, which might be part of that league’s problems- they’ve had it way too good for too long—players shouldn’t be making more than the owners.

11) The minimum WNBA salary for players with 1-2 years of service is $36,570, with 3+ years its $53,000. Teams that win the championship get $10,500 per person, being a 20% boost to your salary, means a lot.

10) Think about this: Vernon Wells of the Angels makes $26,642,857 this year, or $164,452.08 a game. Alex Rodriguez is making $197,530.86 per game, even while he’s on the DL. They could both buy a WNBA team.

9) New Mexico basketball coach Steve Alford has banned his players from Tweeting; hard to disagree with that rule. Seems like more bad than good can come from it, at least for kids in the public spotlight.

8) Baltimore Orioles touted their young starting pitchers as the core of their future; so far, not so much. In his last two starts, Zach Britton has faced 20 batters, allowing 17 runs on 85 pitches. Of the 15 balls put in play against him, 13 went for hits. Not good.

7) Todd Heap is going to be a very popular pick in fantasy football, as he joins forces with Kevin Kolb/Larry Fitzgerald out in Arizona.

6) Oakland A’s owner Lew Wolff went to college with former used car salesman Bud Selig; now Wolff is doing Selig’s bidding by being the first owner to suggest that Dodger owner Frank McCourt sell the team. All I know is, if/when McCourt sells, Wolff better not be allowed to ditch the A’s and buy the Dodgers. They’d be making corruption into an art form if they did that.

5) The new arena on Long Island got voted down Monday, so looks like the NHL’s Islanders will be off to Kansas City pretty soon. If I owned the team, I’d move it to Canada (Hamilton/Saskatoon?), but that’s just me. I’m guessing more people like NHL in Hamilton than in Kansas City.

4) Couple of good nuggets from Elias Sports Bureau—When Mike Stanton hit a grand slam in 10th inning Monday, he was the youngest player to hit an extra inning grand slam since Johnny Bench did it at Jarry Park in Montreal in 1969 (on my parents’ 14th wedding anniversary).

3) Also, when the Mets tied consecutive games with 9th inning homers Sunday/Monday, they were just the second team in the last 50 years to do that, joining the 2004 Devil Rays (Jose Cruz Jr/Aubrey Huff). Those teams still combined to go 0-4 in those games.

2) Adam Dunn has struck out 3+ times in 18 games this season; no one else in the major leagues has more than nine.

1) Could be a long football season in Miami; they’re already booing Chad Henne in training camp, and all the veterans haven’t even reported yet. Chants of “We want Orton” were heard, referring to Denver’s starting QB, rumored to be on the trading block. Stuff like this rarely ends well.

Lady luck: Wednesday's best WNBA bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Connecticut Sun at Los Angeles Sparks (2.5, 158)

Things were looking up for the Sparks after they canned Jennifer Gillom and made Joe “Jellybean” Bryant their head coach. They had a jump in their step and won back-to-back games after the move.

Since then though, that spark has faded and the club is in another major tailspin. The Sparks have dropped five of their last six both straight up and against the spread.

Meanwhile, the Sun have really turned it on. They have won and covered in five of their last six, including an impressive 99-92 win over Atlanta the last time they took the court. Renee Montgomery led the way with 19 points but the Sun had three other players score in double-digits as well.

"I thought we were playing horribly defensively at halftime, they made some great shots, but they shot 62 percent in the second half and lost," Sun coach Mike Thibault said after the win. "I thought we forced turnovers, we got to the free-throw line, and we hung in the game when it looked pretty bleak."

If Connecticut comes out with that same sort of fight Wednesday, the Sparks are going to be in serious trouble.

Pick: Sun

Wednesday, August 3

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wednesday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

Gavin Floyd, Chicago White Sox (9-9, 3.96 ERA)

Floyd has made just two major mistakes over his last three starts – a pair of solo homers. Outside of those he hasn’t allowed a run since he was hammered for seven earned runs in a loss to Minnesota early in July.

The 6-foot-6 starter has struck out 16 batters over that span while walking only three in beating the Tigers, Indians and Red Sox.

Matt Harrison, Texas Rangers (9-7, 2.94 ERA)

Harrison went undefeated in July, winning three out of his five starts while posting a 2.04 ERA. The Rangers won all five of those outings and Harrison has now allowed more than four runs only once since the begging of May.

“He has been doing this all season,” manager Ron Washington told reporters of Harrison. “He stayed out of deep counts, got a lot of ground balls, had some quick innings early, and he executed his pitches.”

Slumping

Gio Gonzalez, Oakland Athletics (9-8, 2.84 ERA)

If there’s one thing the A’s have been able to count on this season, it has been strong pitching from Gonzalez. However, he is coming off consecutive bad starts, allowing six earned runs in a loss to the Yankees before allowing four more runs in 5 1/3-inning performance that ended up in a loss to Minnesota.

"Two bad starts," Gonzalez told reporters following the latest setback. "In my opinion, it happens to anybody. Not to say it's a streak or anything like that. Just two bad starts."

Carlos Carrasco, Cleveland Indians (8-9, 4.67 ERA)

Carrasco is expected to pitch Wednesday after appealing his six-game suspension for throwing at Billy Butler’s head last week. Indians bettors hope the league’s ruling will give him a bit of a reality check.

After being chased after just 3 1/3 innings against Kansas City, Carrasco has lost five straight starts, giving up a whopping eight homers and 24 runs over that span.

Hot lines: Wednesday's best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cincinnati Reds at Houston Astros (+115, 8.5)

You have to hand it to Dontrelle Willis – the guy just won’t go away.

After pitching himself out of the big leagues while suffering through an anxiety disorder, he now has four starts under his belt after being called up by the Cincinnati Reds. So far, the results have been relatively positive. He hasn’t allowed more than three runs in any of those outings and the Reds are 2-2 when he’s taken the ball.

Willis is the only lefty in Cincinnati’s rotation right now and – right now at least – it looks as though he could be a regular in that spot for the rest of the season. Sure, he’s still giving up too many hits and can’t sit down batters like he used to, but he’s battling.

As long as he gives the Reds a chance to win, he’s not going anywhere. We’re thinking he’ll pick up his first win of the season against the woeful Astros.

Pick: Reds

Atlanta Braves at Washington Nationals (+145, 8.5)

It’s safe to say the Washington Nationals have pretty low expectations of Chien-Ming Wang after he spent the last two years rehabbing after shoulder surgery.

He allowed the first five batters he faced to reach base in his first MLB start since hitting the shelf and ended up giving up six runs (four earned) over four innings in an 8-5 loss to the Mets. He allowed eight hits while striking out two and walking one.

Still, manager Davey Johnson was relatively pleased with the 31-year-old’s effort.

“I was actually impressed,” Johnson told reporters. “His delivery looked really easy. He had some good velocity on the ball. I was pleased. I really didn’t think I was going to see that much.”

Johnson also indicated that he expects Wang to remain in the rotation for the rest of the season. The heavy road chalk is a little tough to swallow so we’ll take a shot with the over.

Pick: Over
