Cueto And Reds Clash With Chicago Cubs

Rivals from the middle of the pack in the NL Central duke it out at storied Wrigley Field on Saturday afternoon in MLB betting action, as the Cincinnati Reds pay a visit to the Chicago Cubs.

Cincinnati enters this one as fringe potential playoff teams. The Reds really need to get on a roll if they have any hopes of getting into the second season.

Chicago knows that its postseason hopes are finished, but the Cubs have won five straight in one of their best stretches of the entire season.

Those who want to take in this clash on the MLB odds can see it live starting at 10:05 a.m. (PT) on Comcast Sports Network and FOX Sports Ohio.

The pitcher with the best ERA in baseball is scheduled to be on display in the Windy City, as Johnny Cueto is going to take the bump for the Reds. He has a 7-4 mark on the campaign with a 1.72 ERA. The righty is coming off of a complete game shutout against the San Francisco Giants, and he has thrown 16 straight innings without allowing an earned run.

Batters are hitting just .197 against Cueto this year, and as a result, he only has a 0.98 WHIP. His K:BB ratio is just 67:32 over 109 2/3-innings on the campaign, but it is clear that just getting good wood on the ball is tough for batters.

Cueto hasn't allowed more than three earned runs in a game on the campaign, and he has pitched just as efficiently on the road as he has at home. Cueto is 4-2 with a 1.89 ERA this season as visitors.

Carlos Zambrano, who has strung together three consecutive quality starts, will get the ball Saturday afternoon from Chicago manager Mike Quade. The Venezuelan was part of rumors all week that pointed towards him heading to the Bronx, but that deal was ultimately nixed by the Yankees.

Zambrano has a ton of experience against the Reds over his career, tossing over 200 innings vs. Cincinnati with a personal 16-11 record and solid 3.24 ERA. None of that history meant a thing in his only start against them this season, however. Zambrano was a 145 road 'dog on May 16 and was charged with six runs in 5 1/3 frames of Cincinnati's 7-4 victory.

The Reds have gone 19-7 in their last 26 games against Chicago. The North Siders have only gone 2-6 in eight clashes this season, including losing two out of three in the first series of the year here at Wrigley Field.

Neither one of these teams have really done well on the MLB odds this year. Cincinnati is down 10.58 units, while Chicago is out 14.81 units. The Cubs are pitting their 25-31 home mark against the Reds' 24-30 away record.

Temperatures should be warm on Saturday with an isolated chance for storms. Expect temperatures to be in the low-to-mid 80s.

Red Sox Face Sabathia And New York Yankees

The weekend series between the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees is all about the aces. The teams continue their MLB betting battle Saturday with first pitch from Fenway Park at 1:10 p.m. (PT).

Boston and New York are tied for the AL East lead at 68-42. That’s pending the final score of Friday night’s opener. The Red Sox were 160 favorites behind Jon Lester with a total of 9 ½-runs. The overachieving Bartolo Colon started for the visitors.

Boston was 8-1 against the Yankees this year heading into Friday. There were two, 3-game sweeps in the Bronx.

The Yanks and Red Sox will both make the playoffs, but will be short on elite starters when they get there. Boston has Lester and Josh Beckett as aces, but Clay Buchholz appears out for the year with a back injury. Erik Bedard was just acquired from Seattle and while he has the stuff to be consistently great, he lacks the mental makeup.

Bedard started Thursday night vs. Cleveland, surrendering three earned over five innings (no-decision) in a 7-3 loss. The teams split a 4-game set at Fenway. Boston is just 4-4 in its last eight home games after going 9-0 in its previous nine.

Boston’s recent offense has to be a concern for manager Terry Francona. It’s at 4.4 runs per game over the last eight versus 5.47 on the season (MLB leading).

New York didn’t acquire any starters at the trade deadline after flirting with Ubaldo Jimenez and Hiroki Kuroda (as did Boston). The team has a Cy Young candidate in CC Sabathia and then a lot of question marks. However, it’s hard to argue with a current 7-game winning streak and 15-5 in the last 20.

New York is 8-2 in its last 10 road games, just completing a 4-game sweep at the White Sox. The ‘under’ is 20-6-2 in its last 28 away games.

Sabathia (16-5, 2.55 ERA) is in a Cy Young battle along with Detroit’s Justin Verlander and the Angels’ Jered Weaver. Each has at least 14 wins and Sabathia has the highest ERA of the bunch.

The 31-year-old lefty Sabathia is making his case with an historic run since May. He’s 13-2 in his last 15 starts with a 2.08 ERA. Almost as impressively, he’s lasted at least 6 2/3 innings in every one of them.

The ‘under’ is 5-0 in Sabathia’s last five starts.

Sabathia’s worst recent outing came against the Red Sox on June 9 (six earned over 6 2/3 innings) He’s 0-3 with a 6.16 ERA against them this year, going 16-2 with a 2.11 ERA versus everyone else.

The rotund lefty’s one start at Fenway this year was on April 10, one earned run over 5 1/3 innings in a 4-0 loss. He’s 2-3 with a 3.78 ERA in eight lifetime regular season starts in Boston.

San Francisco Giants, Philadelphia Phillies MLB Betting Preview

Two of the National League’s best take the field Saturday when the San Francisco Giants host the Philadelphia Phillies in the third game of their four-game series.

Saturday’s game will be played at 1:10 p.m. (PT) at AT&T Park, and has the makings of a pitching duel with aces Cole Hamels and Matt Cain taking the hill.

Each meeting between these two teams so far this season has had the look and feel of a playoff game. Memories of the six-game battle in the NLCS last year still clearly remain, and the added intrigue of both teams looking playoff bound again this year could make this series a playoff preview.

Philadelphia (72-39) entered Friday’s action with the best record in baseball and wins in seven straight games (+7.00 units). The Phillies have been 2011’s most profitable team (+17.8 units this season), and with the addition of Hunter Pence at the trade deadline, they show no signs of slowing down.

Hamels (12-6, 2.62 ERA) has pitched extremely well all season and has been particularly sharp of late, giving up two earned runs or less in 12 of his last 13 games. Interestingly, Philadelphia is just 7-6 (-2.35 units) over that span, due in large part to lack of run support.

One such example came on July 27 when Hamels took the mound against Matt Cain. Hamels pitched 7 2/3 innings and gave up just two runs, but the Phillies fell to the Giants 2-1.

San Francisco (62-50) had a nice hold of the NL West a few weeks ago, but after losing six of their last seven games (-6.15 units) they’ve allowed the surging Arizona Diamondbacks to close their lead to just half a game entering Friday. The Giants need to get things going offensively, and deadline-acquisition Carlos Beltran will be key to their success down the stretch.

Cain (9-7, 3.10 ERA) has been generally dominant over his last 13 trips to the hill, allowing one earned run or less in eight of those 13 starts. That said, when he’s been hit, he’s been hit hard, giving up five earned runs in four of the five starts he didn’t give up one or less in.

Cain is just 1-3 with a 4.91 ERA in six career regular season starts against the Phillies, but has dominated them over his last two starts (including Game 3 of the NLCS), pitching seven innings without surrendering an earned run both times.

Heading into Friday’s matchup, the season series was tied at 2-2, with the ‘under’ having the 3-1 edge over the first four games.

Philadelphia is 31-21 on the road (+4.45 units), and San Francisco is 33-21 at home (+5.87 units). The total has gone ‘under’ in six of Philadelphia’s last seven road games and eight of San Francisco’s last 12 home games.

Infielder Miguel Tejada (abdominal) is out for San Francisco.

Westerly winds of up to 16 mph are expected on a chilly afternoon in the Bay Area. Roy Oswalt is set to return from the disabled list Sunday to face Tim Lincecum.

Flat Out Betting Favorite At Whitney Handicap

Saratoga Race Course will send off a field of 11 horses for a 1 1/8-mile journey around the track Saturday in the Grade I Whitney Handicap. Connections will be vying for a piece of the $750,000 purse and fans that are unable to attend in person can watch all the excitement on VERSUS starting at 2:00 p.m. (PT).

The 84th renewal of the race has even greater implications than the cash prize as it’s part of the “Win and You’re In” series that will automatically qualify the winner into the field for the Breeders Cup Classic on Nov. 5 at Churchill Downs.

Flat Out (4/1) drew the rail position with jockey Alex Solis aboard and has gained the distinction of being the morning-line favorite. The betting public will support him at the windows due to a brilliant 6 1/2-length victory in the Grade II Suburban Handicap at Belmont Park on July 2.

The five-year-old out of Flatter has been the betting favorite just once in his career, winning a $42,000 maiden special weight event over six furlongs as a two-year-old at Fair Grounds.

Tizway (6/1) is no stranger to the rigors of racing against Grade I competition, winning the one-mile Metropolitan Handicap at Belmont Park and has been freshened since that race on May 30. Handicappers certainly have their questions in whether the six-year-old can get the distance of this race, but the horse appears to be in top condition after firing a five-furlong bullet in 1:00.34 over the training track last week.

His last attempt at the distance came in the Charlestown Classic (G3) on April 16, finishing third behind one of the entries for this particular race.

Duke of Mischief (8/1) was the winner of that aforementioned race, but then failed to deliver in the Stephen Foster Handicap, as he was forced five-wide in finishing in fourth position. The outside post position is not likely to be a concern for jockey Joe Bravo at the start, as the lifetime winner of seven races has made his run from way off the pace in his last two starts.

Friend or Foe (8/1) will break from the No. 2 post and will be part of the field as long as the track is listed as fast come Saturday. The only New York-bred in the race was scratched from the $75,000 Evan Shipman due to a sloppy track on July 25. With Solis opting to ride the early favorite, trainer John Kimmel has placed rider Jose Lezcano in the irons.

The expected game plan is likely to sit just behind Mission Impazible (6/1) and get first jump on the rest of the field as they turn for home.

In a highly contentious field, Morning Line (10/1) is likely to offer great value heading into the starting gate and bettors may benefit from one of the great jockey-trainer combinations in the game. The Nick Zito-trainee will be ridden by John Velazquez, who has piloted the horse to all four of his career victories.

His only victory over the 2011 campaign came two starts back, winning the Carter Handicap (G1) against a field of eight horses at seven furlongs. Hitting the board in all four of his career races at this distance also packs a punch, including an 11-length romp on this oval on Aug. 21, 2010.

MLB Series Outlook: N.Y. Yankees at Boston

NEW YORK YANKEES (68-42, +11.8 Units)

at BOSTON RED SOX (68-42, +5.6 Units)

Sportsbook.com Series Line: Boston -145, New York +115

After seven straight wins, the Yankees head to Boston tied for first with the Red Sox in the AL East as the rivals start a three-game set Friday night.

With these two superpowers so evenly matched it comes down to the pitching matchups, and Boston has the clear advantage in two of them (Jon Lester over Bartolo Colon on Friday, Josh Beckett over Freddy Garcia on Sunday). Factor in the home-field advantage, plus their eight wins in nine games against the Yankees this season, and BOSTON is the pick. The FoxSheets have a pair of three-star trends that emphasize how well Boston has played against baseball’s best teams.

BOSTON is 33-12 (73.3%, +17.8 Units) against the money line when playing against a team with a winning record this season. The average score was BOSTON 5.2, OPPONENT 3.3 - (Rating = 3*).

BOSTON is 19-4 (82.6%, +15.2 Units) against the money line vs. teams outscoring opp by 0.5 or more runs/game on the season this season. The average score was BOSTON 6.0, OPPONENT 2.8 - (Rating = 3*).

Pitching Probables for Saturday, August 6 - 4:10 ET
Saturday line: TBD
NYY: 18-6 (+8.9 Units) when CC Sabathia starts
BOS: 9-9 (-3.9 Units) when John Lackey starts
Sabathia (16-5, 2.55 ERA) has put himself squarely in the Cy Young conversation over the past six weeks, going 7-1 with a 1.01 ERA while striking out 78 in 62.2 innings over his past eight starts. He’s 9-3 with a 2.22 ERA in 12 road starts on the year. The Sox have gotten to him this year though, scoring six runs against him in each of his past two starts against Boston.
After a disastrous start to the year, Lackey (9-8, 6.23 ERA) has done a respectable job turning his season around. He’s 4-0 with a 3.41 ERA over his past five starts, striking out 26 and walking just three over 31.2 innings. The Yankees knocked him around back in April, scoring six runs in five innings off Lackey at Fenway.

Pitching Probables for Sunday, August 7 - 8:05 ET
Sunday line: TBD
NYY: 11-8 (+1.3 Units) when Freddy Garcia starts
BOS: 15-6 (+6.3 Units) when Josh Beckett starts
Garcia (10-7, 3.22 ERA) has made three straight quality starts, albeit against inferior lineups (Tampa Bay, Seattle and Baltimore). He’s been torched by the Sox twice this season, both in Yankee Stadium, allowing nine runs (eight earned) over seven innings.
Beckett (9-4, 2.20 ERA) has been absolutely dominant in beating the Yankees three times this season. He’s 3-0 with a 0.86 ERA against them, allowing just 15 base runners and striking out 25 over 21 innings. He has allowed more than three earned runs in a start just once since April. The Sox have won eight of Beckett’s 10 home starts, in which he has a 1.99 ERA.

MLB Series Outlook: Atlanta at N.Y. Mets

ATLANTA BRAVES (64-48, +5.1 Units)

at NEW YORK METS (55-55, +5.6 Units)

Sportsbook.com Series Line: Atlanta -140, New York +110

The Braves can take control of the NL Wild Card race if they take advantage of their struggling rivals when they visit the Mets for a three-game set this weekend

After winning their first three games since trading Carlos Beltran, the Mets have dropped four straight. They did win two series against Atlanta in June, but the Braves are a winning team on the road (30-26) while the Mets have a losing record at Citifield (22-28). The FoxSheets provide another trend siding with ATLANTA to win the series.

N.Y. METS are 4-12 (25.0%, -9.4 Units) against the money line in home games vs. a very good bullpen whose WHIP is 1.250 or better this season. The average score was NY METS 3.6, OPPONENT 4.6 - (Rating = 1*).

Pitching Probables for Saturday, August 6 - 7:10 ET
Saturday line: TBD
ATL: 14-7 (+3.3 Units) when Tommy Hanson starts
NYM: 12-10 (+4.1 Units) when Jon Niese starts
Hanson (11-6, 3.20 ERA) has been shaky since the All-Star break, posting a 6.56 ERA over 23.1 innings in his past four starts. He was beaten at Citifield in April, allowing three runs in five innings, but for his career, he has a 2.27 ERA over six starts against the Mets.
Niese (10-8, 3.94 ERA) failed to get out of the sixth inning in either of his past two starts, both on the road, but he’s been much more effective at home this season. The Mets are just 5-6 with Niese on the hill at Citifield, but the left-hander has a 3.28 ERA in those games. He’s delivered quality starts in both his outings against Atlanta this season, holding them to four runs over 14 innings.

Pitching Probables for Sunday, August 7 - 1:10 ET
Sunday line: TBD
ATL: 15-5 (+9.4 Units) when Jair Jurrjens starts
NYM: 8-15 (-5.8 Units) when Mike Pelfrey starts
While he has a significant edge in this pitching matchup, Jurrjens (12-4, 2.63 ERA) has been roughed up since the All-Star break, posting a 6.26 ERA over 23 innings (though the Braves won three of his four starts). He also did not pitch well against the Mets in June, allowing eight runs (seven earned) over 11.2 innings, losing both times.
Pelfrey (6-9, 4.48 ERA) has been inconsistent all year, but he’s coming off two of his better starts. He had a complete game win in Cincinnati on July 27, allowing two runs and seven hits, and held Florida to three runs (two earned) over six innings on Monday. He’s been far better at Citifield this season, going 3-1 with a 3.32 ERA. The Braves have really knocked him around of late though, beating him four straight times (three in Atlanta) since July 2010, as Pelfrey posted a 7.23 ERA in those starts.

Saturday's betting tips: Weather changes Bridgestone

Weather to watch

Tournament organizers at the Bridgestone Invitational are shifting Saturday’s schedule in an effort to avoid some messy weather. Meteorologists are predicting muggy conditions and thunderstoms Saturday, so players will tee off in threesomes at the first and 10th tees from 7-9 a.m., instead of at only the first tee in twosomes at 8 a.m.

Who’s hot

MLB: Texas is 11-3 in its last 14 home games.

MLB: Oakland has won seven of its last 10 meetings with Tampa Bay.

CFL: The under is 8-3 in Hamilton’s last 11 games overall.

WNBA: The under is 10-1-1 in San Antonio’s last 12 games.

Who’s not

MLB: Washington is 4-12 in its last 16 games as an underdog.

MLB: The under is 1-11 in the Angels’ last 12 games.

CFL: The over is 3-7 in the last 10 meetings between Hamilton and Calgary.

WNBA: Washington is 2-8 against the spread in its last 10 home games.

Key stat

69.1 – The Tulsa Shock are easily the worst team in the WNBA and it isn’t tough to see where the problem lies. The Shock are averaging just 69.1 points per game and are the only team in the league to sit below the 70-point per game average.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Chipper Jones, Atlanta Braves – Many thought Jones (quad) would be back in the lineup Friday night after taking fielding drills earlier in the day, but he remained on the bench, so his status for the weekend is still up in the air. The veteran third baseman is hitting .258 with nine homers and 47 RBIs this season.

Game of the day

Philadelphia Phillies at San Francisco Giants (+115, 6.5)

Notable quotable

”I know my stats don’t show it, but just the way I’m driving the golf ball, the start lines are so much tighter, and the shape of the shots are so much tighter. I’m so close to putting the ball on a string, so it’s coming.” – Tiger Woods after shooting a 1-over 71 in the second round at the Bridgestone International. Woods, who also said he’s playing completely pain free, heads into Saturday’s action well off the pace. Adam Scott, Rickie Fowler, Keegan Bradley, and Ryan Moore are tied for the lead at 8-under.

Notes and tips

Home field hasn’t been friendly to the Calgary Stampeders so far this season. The Stamps are 0-2 both straight up and against the spread at McMahon Stadium heading into Saturday’s home date with Hamilton, but have won all three of their road games (2-1 ATS). "I thought it was no place like home," Calgary quarterback Henry Burris told reporters, "For us, it's been there's no place like the road. We need to turn that around.”

The Los Angeles Angels have pulled struggling veteran Joel Pineiro from the starting rotation. He’s working on a 5.31 ERA over 18 starts and will likely serve as a long reliever in the bullpen at least for the time being. The club doesn’t expect to name a replacement in the No. 5 spot in the rotation until early next week.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Calgary Stampeders (-3.5, 50.5)

The Tiger-Cats are on a three-game winning streak after beating the Alouettes, but they struggled to win in Calgary recently, like so many teams. The Stampeders have won eight of their last 10 games at home against Hamilton.

Although the Stampeders offense hasn’t been as devastating as it was in the first five games of 2010 (117 points compared to 140), this is a team that has dominated the fourth quarter this season.

All five games played by Calgary so far were decided by five points or less. The last time the Stampeders played that many close games was in 2001, when they went on sequence of seven games decided by seven points or less.

On Hamilton’s side, Kevin Glenn has been playing better after two tough games to start the season, connecting on just over 61 percent of his pass attempts, and hasn’t been intercepted once in his last three games. But keep in mind that the Tiger-Cats have not won at McMahon Stadium since 2005.

Pick: Calgary

Lady luck: Saturday's best WNBA bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Liberty at Washington Mystics (4, 147)

The last time these two teams hooked up, the Liberty needed a come-from-behind effort to get the better of the bottom-feeding Mystics. They outscored Washington 22-15 in the fourth quarter and clamped down defensively to come away with the victory, but couldn’t cover as 9-point home favorites.

“I was so proud of my team,” Liberty coach John Whisenant said after the game. “All the effort, all the screw-ups you may have had before then comes down to if you can play defense in those last two minutes.”

The Liberty have played three times since that game, going 2-1 both straight up and against the spread. Washington, meanwhile, dropped another close one in its only game since their last meeting – a 61-59 defeat .

The Mystics have been better protecting their own bucket lately and have played under the total in three straight games. That goes along nicely with the fact that New York has checked under its totals in four consecutive contests and seven of the last eight.

Pick: Under

Tulsa Shock at San Antonio Silver Stars (-13.5, 151.5)

Cover your eyes, kids – this one could get ugly.

The Shock head into Saturday’s tilt having lost their last 12 games and they’ve covered only three times over that span.

The talent just isn’t there and no matter what the team tries to do with its game plans, it still seems to be battling just to avoid blowouts on a nightly basis.

Same story in the Shock’s latest loss – a 89-72 loss to the Seattle Storm as 7-point underdogs.

"If we get down and keep fighting, that takes all of our energy by the time we get to the fourth quarter," point guard Ivory Latta told reporters. "That's sometimes why we don't have a good fourth quarter. We fight so hard in the third just to cut it within 10 or something and we're all pretty much laid out."

Seattle pumped them 27-17 in the final frame and we may see a replay of that Saturday considering San Antonio’s depth.

Pick: Silver Stars

Saturday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

Justin Verlander, Detroit Tigers (15-5, 2.24 ERA)

If the Tigers can keep rolling in the American League Central, there is more than Cy Young buzz surrounding Verlander. The right hander is getting some AL MVP chatter, and his last three starts are more evidence that he deserves the consideration. Verlander is 3-0 with a 1.88 ERA during that span. In his most recent start, he went eight shutout innings, allowing only one hit and striking out nine batters.

Joe Saunders, Arizona Diamondbacks (8-8, 3.56 ERA)

The Diamondbacks won’t leave the Giants alone in the National League West, and Saunders is a big part of this late-season push. Arizona’s lefty is 2-0 with a 1.90 ERA in his last three outings and, going back to June 15, he’s 5-2 with an ERA just over 2.00. Saunders took down the Dodgers in his most recent start, giving up only two runs on eight hits over 7 2-3 innings of work.

Slumping

Cory Luebke, San Diego Padres (3-6, 3.21 ERA)

Luebke has struggled since making the move to the starting rotation. He’s winless in his last three outings, touting a 5.40 ERA during that span. A lack of run support has spoiled a few of his good efforts, but even offense wouldn’t bail Luebke out in his most recent performance. He gave up five runs on 10 hits over 7 1-3 innings versus the Dodgers.

Carl Pavano, Minnesota Twins (6-8, 4.90 ERA)

It was a coin toss on who to feature in this slumping spot between Pavano and Chicago’s Jake Peavy, who the Twins will go against Saturday. Pavano’s last two starts have been disastrous, dropping his record to 0-2 with a 12.00 ERA in his last three outings. After allowing eight runs over five inning versus the Rangers, the Twins righty served up seven earned runs on nine hits in just two innings against the Athletics Sunday.

Hot lines: Saturday's best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago White Sox at Minnesota Twins (+105, 8.5)

It was unfair of the Windy City’s South Siders to expect so much from Jake Peavy when he was just coming off injury, but now that he looks like he might be coming around a bit, the White Sox are only going to be looking for more from him.

Peavy threw seven solid innings in dropping a 3-2 pitching duel with New York’s CC Sabathia the last time he toed the rubber. The veteran fired 115 pitches and looked a lot like the Jake Peavy we’re used to seeing on the hill.

"I tried to pace myself and felt a little bit better going deeper in the ballgame," Peavy told reporters. "That's a great sign for me. I'm excited."

Now, if only Ozzie Guillen would start treating him like a guy who’s still trying to get over shoulder surgery. Guillen said the other day that he doesn’t even consider taking Peavy out before he hits 100 pitches and still considers the vet his ace.

He may not be what he was, but we like what we saw from him against the Yanks.

Pick: White Sox

Cincinnati Reds at Chicago Cubs (+125, N/A)

In typical Cubs fashion, the club has put together its longest winning streak of the year long after the season is lost – again.

Chicago won its sixth straight game Friday, downing the Reds 4-3 to improve to just 26-31 at Wrigley Field. The Cubs had dropped three at Milwaukee and two at St. Louis before sweeping the Pirates before welcoming in the Reds for this weekend series against Cincinnati.

“It was a good finish (against the Pirates),” manager Mike Quade told reporters. “This game will drive you nuts. You roll into Milwaukee and struggle to score runs. Then the craziness in St. Louis and then we put it together.”

It’ll be tough to keep it going Saturday though. Carlos Zambrano has been pretty solid lately, but you get the feeling he’s on the brink of another meltdown start any day now. Plus, Johnny Cueto’s on the hill for the Reds and he’s been just about unhittable lately.

Cueto is coming off a complete-game shutout of the Giants and he blanked the Mets over five innings in taking a hard-luck loss before that.

Pick: Reds

Saturday's six-pack

-- Former Clemson QB Kyle Parker is hitting .281 with 18 HRs, 81 RBI in his first full season of pro baseball- thats pretty good. He's with the Asheville Tourists, a farm club of the Rockies.

-- Phillies are 21-3 this year when Brian Schneider is starting catcher.

-- Giants would be better off defensively with Schierholz in right and Beltran in left; Beltran doesn't charge balls as aggressively or have as strong a throwing arm as Schierholz does.

-- Ubaldo Jimenez allowed five runs in five IP at Texas Friday, tossing 108 pitches while allowing seven hits, three walks. Still, Indians led by a couple runs in the 9th before blowing lead and losing 8-7 in 11th.

-- Pirates are 0-5 this week against the Cubs and Padres. Splat.

-- Typical Phil Mickelson Friday; he chips in from the fairway for an eagle on the 11th hole, then double bogeys the 12th. Very talented, but also very frustrating.

********************

Saturday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind......

13) Justin Verlander has taken a no-hitter into the sixth inning four times this year. He makes Detroit a tough opponent in a short playoff series.

12) NFL regular season ends with 16 games on New Year’s Day, with all 16 of them divisional rivalry games. 10 of the 16 games in Week 16 are also division games.

11) Over last four college basketball seasons, Tennessee/Gonzaga have played hardest non-conference schedules. Vols get Duke in first round of Maui Classic in November, but would expect their schedules to get toned down some now that Bruce Pearl is gone.

10) Couple of good nuggets from the Elias Sports Bureau; after Dan Uggla extended his hitting streak to 25 games Wednesday, his batting average was still just .215, or 50 points lower than anyone’s average in the last 100 years who had just hit in 25 straight games.

9) Cleveland’s Jason Kipnis is the first player in 42 years to homer in four consecutive games, when those four games were within the player’s first 10 in the major league.

8) This fact reflects what baseball has become: Over the last decade, ESPN’s ratings for Sunday night Bronx-Boston games are 81.7% higher than all their other Sunday night games. All the casual fan cares about are the money teams.

7) If I’m running the Mets, I try to blow away Jose Reyes’ agent with an offer that would get the shortstop signed before Labor Day. You’d recoup some of the money with increased attendance in September, and a lot of it with season ticket sales for 2012. If you let Reyes test the free agent waters, Washington/Boston are going to provide stiff competition for the shortstop’s services.

6) Major red flag in the Bronx: Twice in the last 14 days Bronx Bombers have scored 12+ runs in the first three innings of a game their but starting pitcher didn’t get the win, because he couldn’t finish the 5th inning. Its generally a lot harder to win playoff games by outslugging the other side.

5) As I type this, Florida Marlins are 55-57; from May 29-June 28, they went 4-25. Take away that skid (I know you can’t but if you did), and Fish are on a pace to win 100 games. The switch to 80-year old Jack McKeon has worked well. Calendar may say he’s 80, but his mind is way younger than that.

4) Kids prefer summer basketball over high school ball because in the summer, all they do is play games; in school ball, there’s a lot more practice time and fewer games. Games are fun; practice can be hard work. An AAU team from Boston actually played 83 games this spring/ summer; that’s more than an NBA regular season.

3) November’s Maui Classic is loaded this year; first round matchups are: Michigan-Memphis, Duke-Tennessee, Kansas-Georgetown and UCLA-Chaminade.

2) There are six football teams in the SEC West; five of them are ranked in the preseason top 20. There are eight Big East teams; none of them are in the top 25.

1) Not sure why they did it, but thought it was refreshing of MTV to let their 30th birthday slide by without a lot of fanfare. Think ESPN would ever do something like that?
