Clayton Kershaw, LA Dodgers At Arizona Diamondbacks

The Arizona Diamondbacks and Los Angeles Dodgers close out a three-game series at Chase Field on Sunday with a premier pitching matchup. Each team's top starting pitcher will take the hill hoping to end a stretch of six meetings in 10 days with a victory.

Game time is scheduled for 1:10 p.m. (PT). Umpire Ed Hickox will be behind home plate, and he has seen home favorites of 140 or less go 4-8 this season. The ‘under’ is also 3-1 in games he has worked with a 7-run total or less.

The teams split the first two games of the series in high-scoring affairs that both went ‘over’ the total. In fact, the ‘over’ had cashed in the last four meetings heading into Saturday after going ‘under’ in four of the previous five.

The Dodgers topped the Diamondbacks 7-4 on Friday in the series opener after losing four of the previous five meetings. The underdog won for the third straight time in the season series as LA catcher Rod Barajas hit a two-run double during a six-run third inning and later homered.

Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw (13-4, 2.68 ERA) will be going for his sixth win in as many starts, and has dominated the Diamondbacks during his career. He is 5-1 in eight starts vs. Arizona with a 1.90 ERA and 5-3 on the road this season with a 3.56 ERA.

Three of his last four wins have come away from home, and two of his past three have seen 5½-run totals posted.

Kershaw has not given up more than two runs in his last five outings, going seven innings or more four times during that stretch. He earned a win in his last trip to Phoenix on July 15, allowing four runs – none earned – and five hits in seven innings of a 6-4 victory.

The Diamondbacks counter with their ace Ian Kennedy (13-3, 3.17), who will also be going for his sixth straight victory. Like Kershaw, three of Kennedy’s past five wins have come on the road. In his last two home starts, he has allowed just two runs and nine hits in 14 innings of work.

Kennedy is 5-2 at home this year with a 3.13 ERA, but he has struggled a bit against LA with a 2-1 mark and 4.67 ERA in three starts.

However, he did beat the Dodgers during his winning streak on July 16, surrendering two runs and five hits in seven innings of a 3-2 victory. The ‘over’ is 5-2 in his last seven trips to the mound.

Los Angeles will be completing a six-game road trip and returns home Monday for six games, starting with a three-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies. Meanwhile, Arizona continues a 10-game homestand on Monday with the first of four against the Houston Astros.

Slipping Cleveland Indians Battle Texas Rangers

The Cleveland Indians are dropping fast in the American League Central standings and the Texas Rangers are not helping to break the fall. Both teams are set to close out a three-game series Sunday night at the Ballpark in Arlington with the first pitch scheduled for 5:05 (PT).

Since May 24, Cleveland has tallied a 25-40 record and lost 11 games in the division race. The Indians watched their record fall to .500 for the third time this year with an 8-7 loss Friday night, as they were unable to protect a 7-2 lead in the early going.

Triple-digit temperatures in the Lone Star State are not going to make a turnaround easy, especially considering the team has lost 17 of its last 20 games in the series, including the first five meetings this year.

Right-handed starter Josh Tomlin (11-5, 4.16) will try to ease the pain and pick up his first victory since July 15. He came away with a no-decision in his latest effort, giving up five runs and 10 hits over six frames in a 9-6 road victory over the Red Sox.

He will be making his 12th start of the year away from home, posting a winning 4-3 mark and 5.11 ERA, as he’s issued just seven free passes in 68 2/3 frames.

Tomlin has made 34 career starts in his first two years in the majors, but none of those have come against the Rangers.

Texas has come back to Earth a bit in splitting its first four games this month after enjoying a sensational July that included a 12-game win streak. Despite posting a 7-9 record in the last 16 contests, the Rangers are still 19-9 in their last 28 games.

Rangers Ballpark has played a major part in the team’s success, with the team posting a 36-21 record at the venue while leading all MLB teams with 87 round trippers at home. The stadium currently leads all ballparks around the league in home runs per game (2.71) and runs per game (11.04).

Colby Lewis (10-8, 4.14 ERA) has suffered back-to-back poor performances against the Twins and Tigers, giving up nine runs (eight earned) and 18 hits over 10 2/3 innings in that span. He has struggled to keep opposing batters inside the ballpark, allowing 27 home runs in 139 innings, including 17 in just 66 frames at home.

Lewis will aim to remain perfect in his career against the Indians, coming in with a 2-0 mark and 6.89 ERA in five appearances (three starts). Both of the wins were earned last year when as he registered 18 strikeouts in 11 1/3 innings.

Total bettors will find that the ‘over’ is 9-2 in Lewis' last 11 home starts, which is far from surprising due to the amount of round trippers he’s allowed.

Home plate umpire D.J. Reyburn may keep the hitter’s from swinging for the fences, as his 18 games have averaged just 1.61 home runs a contest. The ‘under is also 12-6 when he’s behind the dish.

Weather forecasts suggest almost unbearable conditions with game-time temperatures exceeding the century mark. A steady southeasterly wind is expected at 10 mph (in from center). Texas has lost all three of its games this year when playing in such a condition.

Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees MLB Betting Preview

It's a familiar sight for ESPN Sunday Night Baseball viewers when the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees close out a 3-game set. First pitch from Fenway Park is slated for a little past 5:00 p.m. (PT).

New York opened the series with a 3-2 win Friday night as the underdog on the MLB betting charts. Curtis Granderson and Nick Swisher played key roles in the Yankees' 3-run, 6th-inning outburst against Boston's Jon Lester while New York relievers silenced the Red Sox lineup over the final 4 1/3 innings.

The victory pushed the Yankees a game ahead of the Sox in the AL East standings and swelled New York's win streak to eight games. Saturday's matinee was still in progress with CC Sabathia and the Yanks carrying a -150 price with a scoreboard total at nine runs.

Sunday's starting pitching battle has New York's Freddy Garcia (11-8, 3.22) facing Josh Beckett (15-6, 2.20) of the Red Sox. The game will mark Garcia's third start vs. the Red Sox this season, along with one relief appearance. Beckett is battling the Yankees lineup for a fourth time in '11.

All three of Beckett's 2011 assignments against New York have been opposite Sabathia and resulted in Boston victories. The right-hander has whittled his career ERA down vs. the Yanks with 21 innings of work and only two earned runs crossing the plate in building his personal record to 13-7 against them.

Beckett has been particularly stingy at home with a 1.99 ERA in 10 Fenway starts. The Red Sox have won eight of those 10 contests.

Garcia is shooting for his fourth consecutive win and has posted eight quality starts in his last nine outings. His overall numbers away from the Bronx are also of the quality variety with a 2.85 ERA and 1.22 WHIP in eight starts and his lone relief outing of the season which came here at Fenway in April.

Neither of Garcia's two starts vs. the Red Sox have been quality outings, however. He lasted less than two frames at home on June 7 when Boston scored four times against the righty in a 6-4 victory with Garcia +115. He was a 125 home 'dog to Lester again on May 15 when the Sox plated five in Garcia's 5 1/3 frames en route to a 7-5 triumph.

Now in his 12th full season at the major league level, Tim Timmons is in line to call the balls and strikes for this one. 'Under' bettors have cleaned up when Timmons works the plate this season to the tune of 15-6-1 this season and 33-17-4 the past two years.

Boston's weather forecast calls for a 60 percent chance of scattered thunderstorms throughout the day and evening. Look for the thermometer to sit in the low-70s at game time with a southeast wind around 10 mph (1B across to 3B).

New York will enjoy Monday off before opening a homestand Tuesday with the first of three vs. the Los Angeles Angels. The Red Sox hit the road for six games beginning Monday at the Minnesota Twins.

NASCAR Betting Action Returns To Pocono

There are just six races left in NASCAR's version of the regular season, and a slew of drivers are jockeying for position to get into Chase for the Sprint Cup. This week, NASCAR betting action heads to Long Pond, PA, where Pocono Raceway will host the Good Sam RV Insurance 500.

This race is the 21st of the season, and it is scheduled for Sunday, August 7. The green flag drops at 10:18 a.m. (PT), and live television coverage is available on ESPN.

The favorite on the Don Best odds screen for this race is Denny Hamlin, and for good reason. Hamlin won this race (then known as the Pennsylvania 500) in 2006 and 2009, which ties him for the most wins in this race for an active driver. Hamlin has four wins at Pocono, and seven Top 5 finishes in his 11 races.

Earlier this season at the 5-hour ENERGY 500 here in Long Pond, Hamlin only finished 19th, something totally out of the ordinary for his history.

Hamlin, who checks in at +450, also badly needs a good showing in this race to make it into the Chase for the Sprint Cup. Though he is currently holding a Wild Card slot to get into the postseason, Hamlin is 19 points back of an automatic qualifying spot. A win in any of these last six races probably ensures that he is in regardless, as there are only three drivers right now that qualify for a Wild Card berth outside of the Top 10, that being Paul Menard and David Ragan.

The man who won the 5-hour ENERGY 500 knows a thing or two about this track as well, and we know that Jeff Gordon is going to be a driver to be reckoned with on Sunday. The Rainbow Warrior has five wins on this racetrack in his 37 attempts, and he has an average finishing position on 10.3. Gordon won the Pennsylvania 500 back in 1998, and he would love to make another trip to the winner's circle to ensure his place in the Chase as well.

Gordon is +500 on the Don Best odds screen.

Kurt Busch was the runner-up at the race earlier this year at Poconos Raceway, and he is going to be a sneaky driver to watch at +1000 on Sunday. Busch won this race in 2005 and 2007, and he has eight Top 5 finishes in 21 tries here.

Busch only has one win on the campaign, but he does have three pole positions and knows what it is like to win in Long Pond. Just like a number of other drivers, a win on Sunday would basically wrap up a spot in the Chase for the Sprint Cup for Busch once and for all, a coveted spot to be in.

One man who has no troubles about the Chase is points leader Carl Edwards. There aren't many tracks that Edwards hasn't found success at in his career, and this is no exception. The No. 99 Ford made it to Victory Lane in this race in 2008.

Edwards also just signed an extension to his contract with Roush Racing, which will keep him with the team for the foreseeable future. What better way would there be to celebrate this contract renewal than to win at the Poconos!

Edwards is one of a slew of drivers that are +1000 on the NASCAR odds for Sunday's race.

There's a modest 40 percent chance of rain in the forecast on Sunday. Scattered clouds should keep the track temperate down just a bit. Highs are only expected to reach the high-70s.

Sunday's betting tips: Minor in, Jurrjens out

Weather to watch

The forecast for Sunday’s final round of the Bridgestone Invitational in Akron, Ohio, calls for temperatures in the low 80s, with a 20 percent chance of rain and 11-mph westerly winds.

Who’s hot

MLB: The Royals are 8-2 in Bruce Chen’s last 10 home starts.

MLB: The Under is 10-1-2 in the White Sox’s last 13 games vs. a lefty starter.

WNBA: Connecticut is 7-1 ATS in its last eight games.

Who’s not

MLB: The Over is 5-12 in umpire D.J. Reyburn’s last 17 games behind the plate. He’s calling Cleveland-Texas on Sunday.

MLB: The Orioles are 3-12 in their last 15 games with a total set between 7.0 and 8.5.

WNBA: Chicago is 0-5 ATS in its last five games against the Eastern Conference.

Key stat

8 – That’s how many 1,000-yard receiving seasons Derrick Mason has posted. The 15-year vet joined the Jets on Saturday, joining a wideout corps that already includes Santonio Holmes and Plaxico Burress.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Marlins shortstop Hanley Ramirez (.243, 10 HR, 45 RBIs) missed his third straight game Saturday with a sprained shoulder he suffered while diving for a pop fly on Tuesday. He has a chance to play Sunday, so check the lineups.

Game of the day

New York Yankees at Boston Red Sox (-165, 9)

Notable quotable

“Actually, I’m a little surprised [about] how I performed out there.” – Nineteen-year-old Ryo Ishikawa, after shooting a 6-under-64 to pull within one shot of leader Adam Scott at the Bridgestone Invitational.

Notes and tips

Adam Scott (+250) is a slight favorite over Jason Day (+300) to capture the Bridgestone Invitational on Sunday, according to BetOnline.com. Scott (-12) leads Day (-11) and Ryo Ishikawa (-11) by one stroke. Ishikawa, just 19 years old, is set at +700, along with Martin Laird (-12) and Luke Donald (-9). Ten golfers are within five shots of Scott.

Braves ace Jair Jurrjens went on the DL Saturday with a right knee strain after struggling in four starts since the All-Star break. The team called up Mike Minor to start Sunday against the Mets, and said Jurrjens likely will miss only two starts. Jurrjens, who had the same knee surgically repaired last October. went into the All-Star break leading the NL with a 1.87 ERA. Since then he’s posted a 6.26 ERA.

Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips is day to day after spraining his ankle in an outfield collision Saturday. Phillips is hitting .287 with 10 homers, 62 RBIs, 26 doubles and 62 runs scored, and slumping Cincy desperately needs him to get back in the NL Central race.

Lady luck: Sunday's best WNBA bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Seattle Storm at Atlanta Dream (-3, 155)

A bit of payback is in store in Sunday’s WNBA action, as the Atlanta Dream face the Seattle Storm for the first time since losing to their Western Conference foes in last summer’s WNBA Finals.

Seattle edged Atlanta, sweeping the Dream in three straight games by an average margin of less than three points. However, both teams look different than their 2010 incarnations, with injuries plaguing their rosters.

The Storm are without MVP center Lauren Jackson, who averaged over 22 points and eight rebounds against Atlanta in the postseason. The Dream are battling to get back to .500, with point guard Shalee Lehning out for the year and standout Angel McCoughtry still playing on a tender knee that bothered her to start the year.

"They're still always going to be a good team, with their veteran leadership," McCoughtry told ESPN about Seattle. "Right now, we're just trying to string together enough wins to make the playoffs. We're not worrying about what happens then; we just have to secure that playoff spot and go from there."

The Storm have been on a role lately, winning three straight games and five of their last six – posting a 4-2 mark ATS. Atlanta has dropped back-to-back contests after stringing together five wins in a row in July.

"Right now, I think we're still good, even in the position we're in. We still have the potential to improve,” said McCoughtry. “Anybody can get hurt any time; that's sports. You have to enjoy every opportunity and don't take it for granted. I know Shalee wants to be playing right now, but she can't. So let me go out and give it my all."

Pick: Atlanta

Minnesota Lynx at Los Angeles Sparks (+6, 158)

The Minnesota Lynx continue to put space between them and the rest of the Western Conference. They’ve won eight games in a row, boasting a 6-2 ATS record in that stretch.

Next on the list for the Lynx are the Los Angeles Sparks, who were dropped by Minnesota 85-72 back on July 26. The Lynx managed to cover as 9-point home favorites in that contest, holding L.A. to just 30 points in the first half.

“We haven’t done anything yet. We’ve won some games but we haven’t accomplished anything. Nobody is going to give us a trophy for being first in the middle of the season,” forward Rebekkah Brunson told reporters. “We have to keep going and continue to win and get better and put us into the best position going into the playoffs. We haven’t done anything yet. We still have a lot to do and a lot of areas where we can get better.”

Minnesota used to get dominated by the Sparks, going 0-8 until winning both meetings this season. That one-sided record will keep the top team in the league focused against a Sparks squad that's on a 1-6 skid.

Pick: Minnesota

Sunday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

Clayton Kershaw, Los Angeles Dodgers (13-4, 2.68 ERA)

Kershaw has won five straight starts and has only one loss in his past 17 trips to the mound, dating way back to the beginning of May. He’s given up only two earned runs during this recent winning streak, with 39 strikeouts and nine walks.

Ervin Santana, Los Angeles Angels (7-8, 3.32 ERA)

Something about the L.A. sunshine makes for great pitching. Santana has won three straight games, including his no-hitter against the Indians at the end of July. During this span, the lefthander has posted a 0.70 ERA, 18 strikeouts and just four base-on-balls.

Slumping

Kevin Correia, Pittsburgh Pirates (12-9, 4.71 ERA)

He has been shellacked in two of his last three starts. In that span he's given up 16 earned runs in 13 innings, including six homers. Correia has been terrible since he started the season 5-2.

David Price, Tampa Bay Rays (9-10, 3.77 ERA)

The price isn’t right for the Rays' southpaw starter. Price is 0-3 with a 4.05 ERA over his last three outings. He hasn’t pitched too poorly in that span, and has received only one run of support over those appearances. He’s been a tough bet at home too, going 4-6 with a 3.35 ERA inside Tropicana Field.

Sunday Night Baseball: Yankees at Red Sox
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Yankees at Boston Red Sox (-165, 9)

A made-for-TV showdown is on tap for Sunday Night Baseball. The two best teams in the American League, the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox, close out their three-game series at Fenway Park.

BEASTS OF THE EAST

The Yankees and Red Sox own the two best records in the American League, and are just behind the Philadelphia Phillies in the overall standings. Both are 69-43 and atop the AL East after the Bronx Bombers won Friday and the Sox answered Saturday. The Red Sox are actually far superior in divisional play, with a 29-13 mark to New York's 23-19.

BRONX AND BOSTON BOMBERS

No team has hit more home runs this season than the New York Yankees, who lead everyone with 147 round trippers. Right behind the Yankees, in terms of home run tally, is Boston with 137 dingers. Both teams' power is pretty balanced as each squad has six players with double-digit home runs, led by Boston’s David Ortiz (21) and New York’s Curtis Granderson (28) and Mark Teixeira (32).

BOSTON TEE-OFF PARTY

While the Yankees lead baseball in home runs, the Red Sox lead the majors in the three other big categories: Runs per game (5.44), batting average (.279) and OPS (.808).

YANKEE DADDY

New York’s 3-2 win in Fenway Park Friday night snapped a seven-game losing streak to Boston. Between these rivals, one series sweep is considered a big deal, so you can imagine how a seven-game losing skid felt to the Yankees. Boston owns a 9-2 advantage in the season series after winning 10-4 on Saturday.

I LOVE NEW YORK

Speaking of owning the Yankees, there’s no truth to the rumors that Josh Beckett wears an “I Love New York” shirt under his jersey when he faces the pinstripes. But, he does love pitching against the Big Apple's team.

Beckett has dominated New York this season, winning all three of his starts while yielding two earned runs in 21 innings. Beckett has struck out 25 Yankees in 21 innings while walking five.

WRONG SAID FRED

New York starter Freddy Garcia has won his last three starts and five of his last six decisions, but can’t be excited about facing Boston again. In three meetings against the BoSox this season, Garcia has an ERA over 9.00. In his last start versus Boston, Garcia didn’t even get out of the second inning.

NOTEWORTHY NUMBERS

- Josh Beckett has a 0.52 ERA against the Yankees this season.

- Including last season, Beckett is 4-0 in his last four starts against New York.

- Red Sox are 36-15 in their last 51 series finales of three-game sets.

- Yankees are 4-0 in Garcia’s last four starts vs. a team with a winning record.

- Over is 36-15-1 in last 51 meetings between these two teams in Boston.

Hot lines: Sunday's best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cincinnati Reds at Chicago Cubs (-101, NA)

The Cubs, yes the Cubs, have won seven straight after Saturday’s 11-4 victory. They haven’t done that since August 2008.

Starlin Castro drove in four runs Saturday and has an NL-best 148 hits. Alfonso Soriano was on base four times, and Reed Johnson singled, doubled and scored three runs. It only took the Cubs falling 23 games under .500 for them to wake up.

Chicago goes for the sweep behind Randy Wells, who’s 2-1 with a 3.50 ERA over his last three starts.

The reeling Reds send out Bronson Arroyo. Opponents are hitting .294 against Arroyo, and only once in his last seven starts has he allowed less than four earned runs. He has two quality starts since June 8.

Pick: Cubs

Philadelphia Phillies at San Francisco Giants (-137, 6.5)

The red-hot Phillies have won a season-high nine in a row following Saturday’s 2-1 win at AT&T Park.

But everything has to end sometime, and Sunday’s matchup favors the Giants in a big way.

Philly’s Roy Oswalt (lower back inflammation) is coming off the DL and making his first major-league appearance since June 24.

Meanwhile, San Fran ace Tim Lincecum has given up a total of five runs in his last five starts. Batters are hitting .216 against him, and he’s struck out 160 in 149 1/3 innings.

In eight career starts against the Phils, Lincecum is 3-1 with a 2.82 ERA. Look for the Giants to salvage one game in this heated series.

Pick: Giants

Sunday's six-pack

-- If you've never been to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, OH, you should go sometime. Its really an underrated place.

-- My next visit will be in 2014, when Kurt Warner gets inducted, and he will get elected on his first try.

-- Pirates are 0-6 vs Cubs/Padres this week, giving up a ridiculous 28 runs to woeful San Diego the last two nights.

-- Pirates are back to losing on the field but they're still winning at the box office; Friday night was their 13th sellout this season.

-- Our prayers go out to Colorado pitcher Juan Nicasio, who broke the C-1 vertebrae in his neck when he was hit by a line drive Friday night.

-- CC Sabathia is 0-4, 7.20 vs Boston this season, 16-2, 2.11 against all the other teams.

Sunday's List of 13: Things I've (re-)learned so far this summer

13) I read a great article written by Joe Posnanski of Sports Illustrated that included a quote from Hall of Fame catcher Buck O’Neil, about how being happy is a constant effort, something you have to strive for every day, not something we’re simply entitled to. I had never thought of it that way before and now I try to think of that article every day.

12) Try to read a lot about basketball recruiting in July; wind up finding several articles with coaches complaining about what a drain it is on their family life, being away for a week or two every summer. Hey fellas, anytime you want to trade jobs, give me a shout. For five years I sat in the gyms at Disney watching those same games 12-14 hours a day, not because it was my job, but because I like it. If you’re getting paid six figures to do it, so much the better.

11) Don’t think the American public is going to miss the NBA too much when they’re out of work in late October. All this talk about guys going over to play in Turkey? Hey guys, Turkey borders Iraq- Americans ain’t too popular over there these days.

10) I know its his job and all, but Roger Goodell did well getting football back without missing any real activity. Maybe the NFL will find out they should just shut down from the Super Bowl until the Draft, then pick up again. Whatever happens this season is going to influence how people look at the offseason programs in the future.

9) Good things come to people who wait; I’m glad Bert Blyleven got inducted into the Hall of Fame.

8) At McCarron Airport in Las Vegas, they check you in outside for departing flights, right on the curb. The guy who checked my luggage said he liked working outside (he is out of the sun). Still, it was very weird checking a bag at 4:30am.

7) People love fireworks. Seriously. Thousands of people will go to a fireworks show. People will pull off to the side of the road to watch fireworks, even if it screws up traffic. Amazing.

6) People were stressing out about the possibility of there being no NFL this fall. Not just fans, but people who depend of the NFL for extra money in the fall; bartenders, waitresses. Glad they won’t get hurt by a senseless work stoppage.

5) If you sit in an airport or an airplane and record really small numbers into a notebook, inevitably someone will ask you what the hell you’re doing. If you’re having a good day, it’ll be an attractive female. If you’re having an unnaturally good day, she won’t be freaked out by it. Not many unnaturally good days, though......lol

4) The most positive attribute a person can possess is self-assurance. Not cockiness, not being a mouthy, smooth-talking jerk, just a presence that says you’re comfortable in your own skin. The real trick is exuding that attitude even if you don’t feel that way. Easier said than done.

3) There is a maximum salary in WNBA-- $95,000. I always wondered, and now I know. I’ve slept better since learning this.

2) I learn this more and more every month; time management is the most important skill on earth. Like the wise man once said, “We won’t all run out of money, but we’ll all run out of time.”

1) Its important to learn from everyone who comes into your life, even people who are a drain on your energy, resources. Believe me, sometimes you learn a lot more from those people, it just takes longer to realize what it is you learned.
