New York Yankees Host LA Angels On ESPN

NOTE: The Los Angeles Angels called up Garrett Richards from their Double-A club in Arkansas for Wednesday's start in New York.

A battle of second-place teams continues Wednesday night in the Bronx where the New York Yankees host the Los Angeles Angels. ESPN will broadcast the contest beginning at 4:00 p.m. (PT).

Weather and shifts in both starting rotations make the pitching matchup for Game 2 a bit of a mystery. Tuesday's series opener was slated to be a mound clash between the Halos' Dan Haren and New York's AJ Burnett. The Yankees were carrying -120 MLB odds into that game with an 8½-run total.

Rain was falling in the New York City area Tuesday, however, meaning a postponement could push Game 1 starters into Wednesday when skies are expected to be clear. Assuming there is no cancellation, Game 2 should find lefty Hisanori Takahashi (0-0, 3.35) on the hill for the Angels against Yankees right-hander Ivan Nova (13-5, 3.81).

New York is a perfect 7-0 in Nova's last seven trips to the mound, a span that dates to mid-June. This will be his third assignment since being called back up on July 30 and Nova has been extremely tough in the previous two (2-0, 1.84, 16:1 K:BB).

Nova's 7-game winning stretch started following a loss to the Angels in Anaheim on June 3. He was +125 on the road with Jered Weaver winning the 3-2 duel.

Halos manager Mike Scioscia is pulling Takahashi (0-0, 3.35) into the rotation after demoting Joel Pineiro to the bullpen this past weekend. Pineiro has been lit up since the all-star break – 15.23 ERA, 2.69 WHIP, 5 HR – and is 1-3 with a 5.96 in his last four starts vs. the Yanks.

Takahashi, who has made 43 relief appearances this season, made two starts against Yankees in 2010 while pitching for the Mets and worked six scoreless innings in both assignments. He was a big 180 'dog on the closing MLB betting ticker last June at Yankee Stadium when the Mets won, 4-0.

The southpaw saw the Yanks in relief for just a third of an inning during the June series and kept them off the board once again. Takahashi's most recent outing came in relief of Pineiro a week ago, and it was also his longest appearance of the season (2 2/3 IP, 42 pitches). My best guess is something around a 75-80 pitch limit for him on Wednesday, meaning five innings is the most Scioscia is expecting, six innings if he's lucky.

It will be interesting to see if Scioscia makes the call for Pineiro should Takahashi struggle early. The Halos have a pretty decent bullpen and they will have had Monday off, so everyone should be available assuming Haren can go deep in Tuesday's contest.

Los Angeles is without Weaver this series while he serves a 6-game suspension following an ejection in his July 31 assignment at Detroit.

The Yankees took two of three from the Angels when the clubs met in Anaheim and had won nine of the last 12 regular season meetings in the Bronx heading into Tuesday's battle.

New York is closer to seeing Alex Rodriguez (knee surgery) return from the disabled list, but he'll remain out of action at least through this week. The Angels are not reporting any new injuries.

The clubs are scheduled to close things out with a Thursday matinee when Tyler Chatwood is expected to oppose Bartolo Colon.

Boston Red Sox At Minnesota Twins MLB Betting Preview

The Boston Red Sox try to continue their stellar road play when they finish a 3-game series at the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday night.

First pitch from Target Field will be at 5:10 p.m. (PT).

The Red Sox (71-43) look like a shoo-in for a playoff spot and much of it has to do with play outside of Fenway Park. They have the best road record in baseball (34-21) even after a miserable 0-7 start. That’s translated into +9.4 units.

Boston kept its road momentum going with an 8-6 comeback win in the Monday series opener. It was thought the Sox could have a letdown after another draining Yankees series, but the league’s best offense (5.48 runs per game) wouldn’t let it happen.

Tuesday night’s result is still pending with Boston a 130 favorite behind the newly acquired Erik Bedard. The total was 8 ½-runs. Boom-or-bust starter Francisco Liriano was on the mound for Minnesota.

Jon Lester (11-5, 3.23 ERA) will start Wednesday. He was pushed back after the All-Star break with a strained lat, but has pitched well in the three starts since (2.79 ERA). Unfortunately, Boston went just 1-2, including losing (3-2) at home against the Yankees last Friday.

The 27-year-old lefty has been great (8-1, 2.75 ERA) away this season. However, the ‘over’ is 5-2-1 in his last eight road starts with Boston scoring 7.24 runs per game.

Lester hasn’t faced the Twins this year and is 1-2 with a 4.67 ERA lifetime against them. He’s 0-2 with a 6.61 ERA combined at the Metrodome and Target Field, with Boston losing all three starts.

Minnesota is 7-3 in its last 10 home starts against a left-handed starter, 18-18 versus a lefty overall this year.

The Twins (51-64) have lost five games in a row, with the last four coming at home. They made a run in June (17-9) and the first half of July (10-3), but it appears their playoff hopes are over, even in the weak AL Central.

Nick Blackburn (7-9, 4.58 ERA) will oppose Lester. He’s been awful (0-3, 11.68 ERA) in his last three starts. That includes issuing 11 walks in his last two at Oakland and home to the White Sox (9 2/3 total innings).

He has just two quality starts in his last eight outings (8.15 ERA). The ‘over’ is 6-2 in those starts.

The 29-year-old right-hander has a better ERA at home (3.84), but that number is also up over his last five starts (6.08 ERA).

This is Blackburn’s second start against the Red Sox this year. He allowed one run over 6 1/3 innings at Fenway back in May, getting the no-decision in a 2-1 loss. He’s made four starts against them since 2008, sporting a very respectable 2.77 ERA.

Minnesota was happy to score six runs on Monday. It had scored three runs or fewer in seven of its prior eight games.

Boston has won the last four games against Minnesota after dropping the season opener. The ‘over’ is 3-2 this year after the ‘under’ was 6-0-2 in the previous eight.

Umpire Ted Barrett will call balls and strikes. The road team is 7-1 in his last eight games behind home plate. Boston is 25-9 in the last 34 games he’s been behind the dish.

Weather should be beautiful, clear and in the 70s. Both teams are off Thursday with Minnesota traveling to Cleveland and Boston heading all the way to the West Coast to face Seattle.

Worley And Phillies Close Set At Los Angeles Dodgers

The Philadelphia Phillies are running away with the National League East Division and will likely continue to extend their lead in facing the subpar Los Angeles Dodgers. Wednesday’s first pitch for the series finale is scheduled for 12:10 p.m. (PT) at Dodger Stadium.

Philadelphia extended its lead to 8½ games over the Atlanta Braves with a 5-3 victory against the Dodgers Monday night in the series opener. The victory marked the Phillies' 10th in 11 games and their 14th of the last 21 meetings in the series, outscoring the Dodgers by a 98-73 margin.

The club has had little trouble matching up with teams out of the NL West, compiling an 81-43 record against the division since the start of the 2008 season.

Rookie Vance Worley (8-1, 2.35 ERA) has earned a spot in arguably the best pitching rotation in baseball and has led the club to nine consecutive victories. He tallied a 9-2 road win over the Giants last time out, giving up two runs and seven hits over seven frames.

Worley has been solid in eight road appearances (six starts) during the 2011 campaign, entering with a 4-1 mark and 2.52 ERA, surrendering just three home runs in 39 1/3 innings. He has won four consecutive decisions away from Citizens Bank Park.

He will be facing the Dodgers for the first time in his career and will try to solve his daytime problems in the process. The right-hander is 1-1 with a 5.29 ERA in three outings under the sun compared to a perfect 7-0 mark and 1.60 ERA in 12 nighttime appearances (10 starts).

Total bettors will find that the ‘over’ is 4-1 in his last five starts overall.

Los Angeles has a large mountain to climb in hopes of getting back into the playoff race, dropping 10 games back in the NL West standings after Monday’s loss. The Dodgers came into the series one of the hottest home teams in baseball, winning nine of 13.

The club managed to collect 13 hits in the series-opening loss, with All-Star outfielder Matt Kemp singling twice. He failed to drive in a run in those opportunities and has gone five games without an RBI, which is surprising as he ranks third in the league with 84 RBI.

Chad Billingsley (10-9, 4.17 ERA) has fallen into quite a pattern by alternating wins and losses over his last seven outings. He comes in off a 7-4 road win over the Diamondbacks, giving up three runs and seven hits over six innings.

The right-hander has performed well at home this year, posting a winning 5-4 record and 2.88 ERA, as opponents are hitting just .226 against him. In five career starts versus the Phillies, Billingsley is 1-2 with a 3.19 ERA, including a 2-0 loss in Philadelphia in his only start against them last year (6 IP, 2 ER).

Home plate umpire Laz Diaz has seen an average of 6.78 runs scored in his 23 games behind the plate this year, leading the ‘under’ to a 14-8-1 mark.

Weather forecasts suggest a perfect day to play baseball, with game-time temperatures in the low-70s and a southwesterly breeze of 5-10 mph (out to center).

Wednesday’s betting tips: Angels’ rookie SP debuts vs. NYY

Who’s hot

MLB: The over is 18-7-1 in San Diego’s last 26 games overall.

MLB: Colorado is 8-2 in its last 10 games in Cincinnati.

Who’s not

MLB: San Diego has won just six of its last 19 games as a visitor against the New York Mets.

MLB: Pittsburgh was 1-10 in its last 11 and 4-14 in its last 14 meetings with San Francisco.

Key stat

64.7 – Over the last month, MLB road favorites had won 64.7 percent of their games (77-42).

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Carlos Beltran, San Francisco Giants – Beltran sat out for the second straight day Tuesday and an MRI revealed a strained right wrist. He is considered day-to-day and his status for the rest of the week is questionable. "As soon as I feel like I can swing the bat, I will be out there," Beltran told reporters. "There's injuries that allow you to go out there and be under control, but the wrist -- swinging the bat, that's a huge part of the game, and throwing the ball is a huge part of the game."

Game of the day

Milwaukee Brewers at St. Louis Cardinals (-125, 8.5)

Notable quotable

"It's definitely a lot tougher than it was three months ago. There are moments when you think 'what's happening here, what's going on?' But this is always what I wanted to do. When you grow up and dream of being a professional golfer and dream of winning Majors, all you really think about is the golf and playing in front of great crowds on unbelievable courses, winning trophies. You never think about the other side of it and that is the side that takes a bit of getting used to.” – Rory McIlroy about his increased popularity and public exposure following his first Major title in June. McIlroy, who plans to take up his PGA Tour card next season, is pegged as a +1000 favorite to win the PGA Championship.

Notes and tips

The Los Angeles Angels are turning to rookie right-hander Garrett Richards to take Joel Pineiro’s spot in the rotation in his MLB debut. Richards is 12-2 with a 3.03 ERA and 100 strikeouts in Double-A ball this season. The 23-year-old relies on a mid-90s fastball, a curveball, changeup and slider. Oddsmakers have yet to set a line for Wednesday's matchup.

The San Diego Chargers will be without starting running back Ryan Matthews for Thursday’s preseason game against Seattle. Matthews is dealing with a slight muscle strain in his upper leg and this has to be concerning after he missed four games last season and took just 158 carries. Mike Tolbert will see an expanded role Thursday for the Chargers, who are set as 3.5-point favorites against Seattle with 35-point total on the board.

Andy Murray’s Rogers Cup title defense ended abruptly Tuesday when he dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision to South African Kevin Anderson in just 69 minutes. Wednesday’s action features Novak Djokovic, Gael Monfils, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Rafael Nadal and Juan Martin Del Porto all set as solid favorites in their second-round matchups.

Wednesday's six-pack

Six actual TV programs you could’ve found Tuesday night

-- Auction Kings (Discovery) – An auction that includes a head hunter’s ax and a rare vespa scooter; a vintage Coke machine.

-- Bacon Paradise (Travel)—Touring the country for the best places to eat dishes served with bacon.

-- Billy the Exterminator (A&E)—Billy is attacked and bitten by vicious squirrels.

-- Cupcake Wars (Food)—Bakers put on their game faces to have their cupcakes eaten at this year’s ESPY awards.

-- Top Shot (History)—A shoot-off using one of the most powerful handguns; the teams carry a 200-pound pole.

****************

Wednesday's List of 13: Random midweek stuff........

13) Dodgers are averaging over 8,000 less fans a game this year than last; their home games are so quiet on TV. Whomever buys the team from the hated Frank McCourt is going to have a very easy act to follow.

12) If you’re a Washington Redskin fan and you see Rex Grossman as the #1 QB on your depth chart, what are you thinking with the regular season only four weeks away? It can’t be happy thoughts.

11) This is only the third time since 1988 the Arizona Cardinals will open the season at home; before they had the dome, Big Red always started the season on the road. In fact, for three years in the late 80’s, their first home game wasn’t until Week 4, by which time they usually had already been eliminated from contention. The new stadium has made them a much more viable franchise.

10) Buffalo DT Kyle Williams is 6-2, weighs 295 pounds and is a scratch golfer; its conceivable he is the biggest scratch golfer in the world.

9) Former Knick/Warrior Latrell Sprewell still owes state of Wisconsin $3,530,426.49 in back taxes, most of anyone. Good luck collecting.

8) Jose Reyes’ MRI was sent for examination to Dr Daniel Cooper, team physician for the Dallas Cowboys. They could send the freakin' MRI to Dr Dre and it would be better than the Mets' crack medical staff.

7) Speaking of the oft-injured Reyes, he could never be a NASCAR driver; the guy who won last week’s race at Pocono, Matt Keselowski, raced with a broken ankle he suffered four days before the race. No tweaked hamstrings in NASCAR, buddy.

6) Someone on Twitter asked Hank Haney if a 5-handicapper were to play at Firestone Country Club, how many strokes would having Steve Williams as his caddy improve the guy’s score. Haney replied “2-5 strokes”.

5) Boston reliever Alfredo Aceves has a lifetime record of 22-2, the first major leaguer EVER to win 22 of his first 24 decisions. That’s pretty impressive.

4) Out of the 90 guys in Redskins’ camp, only 24 of them were there before Mike Shanahan became head coach, which was last season. Talk about someone cleaning house.

3) Indians are 5-6 in their last three road series; the bullpen is 2-6, the starting pitchers 3-0, so the starters have kept Cleveland close in these games. They just haven’t been finishing well.

2) In 12 August starts with Bronx Bombers, AJ Burnett is 0-8, 7.28.

1) Interesting article on ESPN.com about high school QB Gunner Kiel, who turned down Alabama/Oklahoma to play for the Hoosiers. Indiana campus is just 45 miles from his home, but it talks about how football in Indiana is perceived differently by kids nowadays because of the Colts' success. Kiel is the key to the Hoosiers improving their recruiting.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wednesday’s streaking and slumping starting pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

STREAKING

Rick Porcello (11-6, 4.49 ERA), Detroit Tigers

This righty is taking advantage of some great run support from his teammates. Detroit is averaging 6.8 runs per game in Porcello’s last six trips to the bump. Not surprising, the Tigers are 6-0 during that streak.

Porcello has been good but not great. He owns a 4.39 ERA over his last six appearances but he’s delivered quality starts in four consecutive outings.

Ivan Nova (10-4, 3.81 ERA), New York Yankees

Here’s another hurler picking up wins like it George Clooney picks up hot ass. Nova is 6-0 with a 3.18 ERA over his last seven starts, including a dominating performance last week against the White Sox. The 24-year-old right-hander struck out 10 and allowed one run in 7 2/3 innings of work.

"That might be as good as we've seen him all year," Yankees manager Joe Girardi told reporters after the game. "This start and Cincinnati. He was excellent tonight. His slider, again, made a huge difference for him."

SLUMPING

Ubaldo Jimenez (6-9, 4.64 ERA), Cleveland Indians

Cleveland traded for an ace but that’s not what baseball bettors have seen from Jimenez over the last couple weeks. The former Colorado hurler is 0-1 with an 11.45 ERA and a 2.36 WHIP (walks + hits per inning) over his last three starts.

The poor results have been somewhat of a mystery considering Jimenez is hitting 95 to 97 mph on the radar gun with his fastball.

“My problem was I couldn’t command my fastball,” Jimenez told the Cleveland Plain Dealer about his first start for the Indians. “It was moving too much. I could only throw a breaking ball for a strike in the first three innings.”

Gio Gonzalez (9-9, 3.10 ERA), Oakland Athletics

It’s been three straight brutal trips to the bump for Gonzalez. The southpaw hurler is 0-3 with an 8.81 ERA and a 2.20 WHIP over his last three appearances and the over is 6-0 in his last six starts.

Umpire handicapping: Two MLB umpires to target Wednesday
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you're looking for a couple of over/under MLB wagers for Wednesday, be sure to check out who's behind the plate.

Billy Miller’s games during the past two seasons have been cashing in for under bettors in a big way.

About 64 percent (37 of 58) of his games over that span have ducked below the total heading into Wednesday’s matchup between the Chicago White Sox and Baltimore Orioles.

This season the under is 15-8 in Miller’s games behind the plate after it went 22-13 in his contests last season.

Oddsmakers have the White Sox set as a -125 road favorite with a 9-run total. The under is also 11-4 in the last 15 matchups between the two teams.

Meanwhile, Joe West is scheduled to call tomorrow’s Mariners-Rangers game. West is one of the most prominent over umpires in the bigs this season with 16 of his 23 games checking in above the total.

Seattle is currently set as a -210 favorite with a total of 9 runs.

Hot lines: Wednesday's best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Philadelphia Phillies at Los Angeles Dodgers (+115, 7)

If you’re looking for holes in Philadelphia’s starting rotation, you’re going to be searching for a while. After Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee and Roy Oswalt have their way with you, then you have to deal with young stud Vance Worley.

The rookie hasn’t lost a game since May 29 and is working on a 2.35 ERA in 84 1/3 innings pitched this year while compiling an 8-1 record.

"It is almost like a dream come true to be on a staff with these guys," Worley told reporters after holding the Giants to just two runs over seven innings in his latest win. "I grew up watching these guys, and to see them all come together on one staff and just have me the fifth guy it is cool but I'm trying not to get in their way."

Worley took a line drive off the leg in that outing but it doesn’t sound like he’ll be hampered in Wednesday’s outing.

With Philadelphia winning nine of its last 10 road games, we’ll happily jump on the road chalk here.

Pick: Phillies

Pittsburgh Pirates at San Francisco Giants (-145, 7.5)

The Pirates finally snapped a 10-game losing streak on Monday, but you have to wonder if this plucky bunch is running out of steam down the stretch.

They still sat tied for seventh overall in the MLB money standings, having earned the club’s supporters just over seven units heading into Tuesday’s action and did make some solid moves ahead of the trade deadline.

Whether they’ll continue to be a money-making team down the stretch remains to be seen, though this isn’t the series to start rolling the dice on the Pirates.

Both of Wednesday’s starters have struggled lately with Pittsburgh’s Jeff Karstens coming off a nine-run debacle against the impotent Padres. San Francisco’s Jonathan Sanchez gave up five earned runs and a pair of homers in a 4 2/3 innings in a loss to Philadelphia his last time out.

Pick: Over
