FSU to the SEC? Could it happen? Will it happen?

TALLAHASSEE — At this point, all appears quiet here in North Florida with respect to rumors that Florida State could, or would accept an invitation from the SEC to become potentially the conference’s 13th or 14th team.
The speculation hit Twitter hard Thursday night, as fans, bloggers and beat reporters started tweeting back-and-forth about the gossip, and about what a move would mean for the Seminoles and their followers.
Why would FSU want to bolt the ACC for the SEC? And … Could it happen?
The Seminoles have been in the ACC since July 1991, after years as a member of the long-defunct Dixie and Metro Conferences, and as an independent.
Since arriving in the conference, the Seminoles have won 12 of the 20 ACC championships that have been played.
Speculation about FSU’s potential move arose after reports surfaced confirming the possible addition of Texas A&M to the SEC. Other writers on the ground in Texas have since taken to Twitter denying the claims. They’ve done so here. And here. If the rumors about Texas A&M do pan out, though, it would send the SEC to 13 teams and a potentially swollen SEC West division. That probably would send the conference looking for a suitable SEC East counterpart to balance the sides. For that reason, most believe Florida State, a team already located in the heart of Dixie, and with a big SEC-style following, would be that 14th team.
Even one ACC basketball coach entered the fray. N.C. State men’s coach Mark Gottfried tweeted this, certainly stoking the fires about FSU. … One would think that even if they agree with him, there are some at FSU who probably were taken aback by Gottfried’s tweet.@)
