Cardinals, Rockies End Series On ESPN

The St. Louis Cardinals are enjoying their time away from division-rival Milwaukee as they finish a weekend home series versus the Colorado Rockies.

ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball will have the first pitch from Busch Stadium at 5:05 p.m. (PT). The pitching matchup is Edwin Jackson against Colorado’s Esmil Rogers.

The Cardinals (64-55) are 2-4 against Milwaukee during August and 5-0 against everyone else. They trail the red-hot Brewers by four games in the NL Central.

Friday’s opener with Colorado was a 6-1 victory behind Kyle Lohse (one earned run over 6 1/3 innings). The Saturday night game is still pending with St. Louis a big 180 favorite. Jaime Garcia was matched up against Jason Hammel.

Jackson (8-8, 4.07 ERA) has made three starts since being acquired from the White Sox at the trade deadline. The one road tilt was at Milwaukee on August 3, getting rung up for four homers and eight earned runs in a 10-5 loss.

The two home outings against the Cubs and Brewers were both quality starts, three total earned runs over 13 innings (2.08 ERA). The Cardinals beat the Cubs (9-2) in his team debut on July 29, but lost (5-3) to Milwaukee last Wednesday.

Jackson has a 2.67 ERA in 11 combined home starts this year.

The 27-year-old right-hander is still young with quality stuff, but he’s already on his seventh MLB team as management gets frustrated with the lifetime 56-59 pitcher (4.54 ERA).

Jackson has experience versus Colorado with his multiple NL stints, but it hasn’t been pretty. He’s 0-2 with a 17.28 ERA in five lifetime starts. The good news is that just one was since 2005, a 12-1 drubbing last year in hitting-happy Coors Field.

The Rockies (55-65) are playing out the string at this point, way behind both Arizona and San Francisco in the NL West. They’re 4-9 since the trade of ace Ubaldo Jimenez to Cleveland for prospects.

Rogers (6-1, 5.85 ERA) opened the season as the fifth starter, but made just five appearances (7.66 ERA) before straining his lat muscle and missing almost three months.

He returned on July 25, coming out of the bullpen before moving into the rotation after the Jimenez deal. He started the last two games, allowing a combined three earned runs over 11 2/3 innings (2.32 ERA) in wins over Washington and Cincinnati.

The 25-year-old right-hander from the Dominican is 5-0 with a 3.86 ERA on the road this year (four starts).

Rogers’ two lifetime appearances against St. Louis came last year (0-1, 6.00 ERA). He started at Busch in the season finale, allowing two earned runs over four innings in a 6-1 loss.

This is the second series between the teams this year, with St. Louis taking two of three at Colorado in May.

St. Louis has won five straight against Colorado at home, going 4-0 last year. The ‘under’ is 6-0 in the last six meetings in St. Louis.

Colorado is the worst hitting road team in the NL (3.48 runs per game). The ‘under’ is 4-0 in its last four road games, scoring seven total runs.

The Rockies haven’t been that bad away (27-34, -6.9 units), although they are 2-9 in their last 11 road games against a winning team. The real killer has been their 28-31 home mark (-16.1 units) after going 52-39 last year.

St. Louis is a pedestrian 31-26 at home (-5.0 units). That needs to improve down the stretch.

Chad Fairchild will call balls and strikes. The ‘over’ is 4-0 in his last four games behind the plate.

Weather should be clear and in the upper 70s. St. Louis starts a 6-game road trip in Pittsburgh on Monday, while Colorado begins a 9-game homestand with Florida.

Yankees Host Rays In AL East Battle

American League East rivals collide in what could be a crucial battle for the postseason on Sunday at Yankee Stadium as the New York Yankees meet the Tampa Bay Rays.

The first pitch from the Bronx is slated for 10:05 a.m. (PT) and there will be live television coverage available on TBS and the YES Network.

MLB bettors know that this one could be crucial, as it could give the Rays a chance to get back within 5.5 games of the AL Wild Card slot. Tampa Bay enters the weekend on a 5-game winning streak getting back to 10 games above .500 and 3.24 units up for MLB wagering aficionados.

Don't think for one second that the Yankees are sliding that badly. Sure, they are only 2-4 in their last six games coming into the weekend, but they are still 25 games above the Mason-Dixon Line and are comfortably 9.83 units in the green thanks to a superb 39-24 record at the new version of the "House That Ruth Built."

This is going to be a great opportunity for the Rays as they likely have an edge in the pitching matchup in this one. James Shields (11-9, 2.80 ERA) will take the bump against Freddy Garcia (10-7, 3.16 ERA).

"Big Game James" might need to change his moniker to "Complete Game James." The righty has 11 wins this season and he already has eight complete games to show for his 24 starts. He picked up his fourth shutout of the season in his most recent start against the Kansas City Royals, allowing just six hits and three walks.

Shields' 11-9 record is a tad deceiving because he has pitched well enough to have at least 15 'W's. His WHIP of 1.06 is comparable to that of anyone in the league, and he is going to be one of the handful of pitchers that reaches the 200 strikeout plateau in all likelihood. Shields has 167 strikeouts against just 48 walks in 176 2/3-innings of work. Batters are also only hitting .220 against him on the campaign.

Even though he is 34-years old, Garcia is still finding ways to get the job done for the Bronx Bombers. He had won three straight starts before a 3-2 loss against the Boston Red Sox in his most recent outing last weekend.

Garcia has been en fuego at home of late, picking up four straight victories. Though he has gotten an immense amount of run support in those games (6.25 runs per game), the righty has pitched well, allowing just seven earned runs in 26 1/3-innings.

Against the Rays in his career, Garcia has been even more special, going 9-2 with a 3.33 ERA in 16 outings. He beat Tampa Bay at Tropicana Field on July 20 thanks to 6 2/3 scoreless innings of work in a 4-0 triumph.

Tampa Bay is just 2-7 in its last nine trips to the Big Apple with Shields on the mound, and it is also only 5-13 against the Yanks in his last 18 starts overall.

New York is an MLB-best 32-8 in day games this year.

These two clubs have split the first 10 meetings of this season. Seven of the 10 meetings have stayed 'under' the total.

Pirates Face NL Central-Leading Brewers

The Milwaukee Brewers will try to extend their lead in the NL Central Sunday afternoon when they host the Pittsburgh Pirates in the final game of their three-game series.

Charlie Morton and Shaun Marcum take the hill at Miller Park Sunday with a scheduled start time of 11:10 a.m. (PT).

Through 103 games of action near the end of July, both Milwaukee and Pittsburgh had a 54-49 record, and this series looked like it would be a battle for positioning atop the NL Central. But since that point, the Brewers are 14-2 (+12.10 units) and the Pirates are 2-12 (-10.45 units) heading into Saturday’s action, leaving the Pirates 11 games out of first place.

Milwaukee (68-51) has won five straight series over their current hot streak, including two against the St. Louis Cardinals to open up a four-game lead in the NL Central. The Brewers hope to add to that lead over the weekend.

Shaun Marcum (10-3, 3.62 ERA) has given up three earned runs or less in four of his last five starts, and the Brewers are 4-1 over that stretch (+3.10 units). Milwaukee had lost in eight of Marcum’s previous nine starts (-8.30 units); the addition of Francisco Rodriguez to the bullpen has clearly helped the Brewers bridge the gap to John Axford in the ninth.

Marcum’s only career start against Pittsburgh came this season on April 13, when he won as a -115 favorite after pitching seven shutout innings.

Pittsburgh (56-61) seems to have crashed back down to earth after a storybook first half to the season. There is still time to keep their slim playoff chances alive, but they’ll need to re-find the confidence that has clearly eluded them over the last few weeks.

Charlie Morton (9-6, 3.56 ERA) hasn’t struggled with confidence lately, stringing together 15 straight shutout innings over his last two starts including eight shutout innings in a win as a +170 underdog over San Francisco last Monday.

Morton doesn’t have a start against the Brewers this season, but has not fared well at all in four career starts against them, going 0-4 with an 8.31 ERA.

Entering Saturday’s game, Milwaukee had won all six games they’d played against Pittsburgh this season. The total was split 3-3 between the ‘over’ and the ‘under’.

The total has gone ‘over’ in 11 of Pittsburgh’s last 14 games and in eight of Milwaukee’s last 11. The total has also gone ‘over’ in five of the last six games these two teams have played in Milwaukee.

MLB Series Outlook: Boston at Seattle

BOSTON RED SOX (72-44, +6.7 Units)

at SEATTLE MARINERS (50-66, -13.6 Units)

Sportsbook.com Series Line: TBD

The Red Sox and Mariners are heading in opposite directions right now, with Boston fighting to keep the A.L. East lead and the Mariners sinking to the bottom of the A.L. West. Their deadline deal together embodied that, with the Red Sox receiving starting pitcher Erik Bedard as a part of a three-team trade. Although he does not pitch this series, the Red Sox will aim to build on their one-game lead over the Yankees with a sweep over a weaker opponent.

Bet on SEATTLE to win the series as heavy underdogs who should receive great lines against the juggernaut Red Sox. The Mariners have strong pitching matchups in the first two games of the series, and despite their division-worst record, play near .500-ball at home (27-28) and are 5-4 in August.

The FoxSheets show another trend siding with the Mariners to take two out of three games.

TERRY FRANCONA is 66-77 (-25.3 Units) against the money line in road games against AL West opponents as the manager of BOSTON. The average score was BOSTON 4.4, OPPONENT 4.6 - (Rating = 1*).

Pitching Probables for Sunday, August 14 - 4:10 EDT
Sunday line: TBD
BOS: 11-5 (+4.85 Units) when Tim Wakefield starts
Team: 1-3 (+1.60 Units) when Charlie Furbush starts
Never spectacular, the 45-year-old Wakefield (6-4, 4.92 ERA) is a reliable veteran who should be counted on to grind out this matchup. He’ll be trying to win his 200th career game on Sunday. Still, he has struggled against the Mariners with a 6.00 ERA in 12 innings against them this year, and is no sure thing, with nine straight starts of allowing at least three earned runs (5.43 ERA in this span).
Furbush (2-4, 4.46 ERA) excelled in 26 innings as a reliever with a 2.42 ERA but has struggled in the rotation with a 7.71 ERA and .343 opponents’ BA in four starts. He’s also a lefty, which doesn’t bode well for him on Sunday because the Red Sox are one of three teams in baseball with an OPS above .800 against left-handed pitching.

MLB Series Outlook: Chicago Cubs at Atlanta

CHICAGO CUBS (51-67, -13.7 Units)

at ATLANTA BRAVES (69-49, +9.0 Units)

Sportsbook.com Series Line: TBD

Like every year, the Cubs seem to be a disappointment and the Braves are at the center of the playoff picture. At 51-67, Chicago sits 16 games behind the N.L. Central lead while Atlanta sits comfortably atop the N.L. Wild Card race at 69-49. The Cubs have been hot however, entering the weekend with an 8-2 record in August. With the trade deadline addition of speedy Michael Bourn in center field, the Braves have a true leadoff presence to jump-start them now.

Play on favored ATLANTA to take this series, with too much of a starting pitching and lineup edge in this series to give the lovable loser Cubs a chance. Chicago has the second-fewest road wins in the NL (22), while the Braves have been dominant against N.L. Central teams this year, winning 62.1% of the games (18-11).

The FoxSheets give another reason to take the Braves, who are not facing a lefty starter this weekend.ATLANTA is 51-32 (61.4%, +11.1 Units) against the money line against right-handed starters this season. The average score was ATLANTA 4.2, OPPONENT 3.4 - (Rating = 1*).

Pitching Probables for Sunday, August 14 - 1:35 EDT
Sunday line: TBD
CHC: 8-14 (-7.65 Units) when Matt Garza starts
ATL: 9-8 (-0.55 Units) when Brandon Beachy starts
Garza (5-9, 3.81 ERA) has been the lone Cubs starter to be in the rotation the entire year and pitch with a strong level of consistency. He’s far worse away from Wrigley Field though, with a 5.20 road ERA. Against the K-machine Beachy, play against the Cubs’ ace.
Beachy’s (5-2, 3.43 ERA) last start embodied his entire season: he allowed two runs over 6.2 innings with 10 K in a no-decision. He is averaging 9.74 K per 9 innings, but only has seven decisions in 17 starts this year. Although not nearly as bad as the Braves, the Cubs are strikeout-prone as well, ranking tied for 10th in the majors with 860 whiffs. Beachy has never faced the Cubs in his career.

MLB Series Outlook: San Francisco at Florida

SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS (64-54, +3.0 Units)

at FLORIDA MARLINS (55-62, -7.8 Units)

Sportsbook.com Series Line: TBD

The streaky Marlins are on a bad run again, while the Giants are struggling themselves. Florida will be trying to snap a seven-game losing streak when it hosts San Francisco for a three-game set starting Friday night. Meanwhile, the Giants are just 4-10 since adding Carlos Beltran, who is now battling a wrist injury, to their lineup.

Florida pulled off a sweep in San Francisco the last time these teams met, back in May, and took out star catcher Buster Posey in the process. It took the Giants some time to recover then, just as they’re adjusting to the arrival of Beltran now. They pulled off a three-game sweep the last time they visited Miami, in May 2010, and they’ll have their three best pitchers on the mound this weekend: Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain and Ryan Vogelsong. That, plus this pair of three-star trends from the FoxSheets, is enough to make SAN FRANCISCO the pick to win the series.

FLORIDA is 20-35 (36.4%, -20.8 Units) against the money line in home games vs. teams averaging 2.75 or less extra base hits per game this season. The average score was FLORIDA 3.9, OPPONENT 4.5 - (Rating = 3*).

JACK McKEON is 1-12 (7.7%, -13.3 Units) against the money line in home games vs. a good bullpen whose WHIP is 1.350 or better as the manager of FLORIDA. The average score was FLORIDA 2.8, OPPONENT 6.3 - (Rating = 3*).

Pitching Probables for Sunday, August 14 - 1:10 ET
Sunday line: TBD
SF: 12-7 (+4.3 Units) when Ryan Vogelsong starts
FLA: 10-10 (+0.5 Units) when Chris Volstad starts
He’s been one of the surprise stories of 2011, but Vogelsong (9-2, 2.48 ERA) is coming off a brutal outing against the Phillies. He struck out eight in five innings on Monday, but also gave up five runs and 11 base runners. He’s also been a little shakier in road starts this year, where he’s 3-0, but has a 3.55 ERA and 1.45 WHIP (as opposed to 1.82 ERA and 1.18 WHIP at home). He pitched very well against Florida in May, holding them to one run over eight innings in a tough loss.
The struggles continue for Volstad (5-8, 5.58 ERA). After posting an 8.50 ERA over four starts in July, he was optioned to Triple-A New Orleans where he threw seven shutout innings in his first start, but allowed nine runs and 22 base runners over 11.1 innings in his next two. He has a strong track record against the Giants (1.71 ERA, 17 K, 3 BB over three career starts), including six innings of two-run ball in a no-decision at San Francisco in May (a Florida win).

MLB Series Outlook: Tampa Bay at N.Y. Yankees

TAMPA BAY RAYS (63-54)

at NEW YORK YANKEES (71-45)

Sportsbook.com Series Line: TBD

The Yankees can all but officially knock Tampa Bay out of playoff contention when they host the Rays for a three-game set starting Friday night.

New York enters the weekend with an 8½-game lead over Tampa for the A.L. Wild Card spot. But the Rays are an even 6-6 over the past two years at the new Yankee Stadium, and they have clear advantages in the Saturday and Sunday pitching matchups. Plus, at 32-26 (+7.5 Units), Tampa has the third-best road record in the American League. The FoxSheets provide another trend about the Yankees that sides with TAMPA BAY to steal the weekend series:

TAMPA BAY is 32-20 (61.5%, +13.2 Units) against the money line in road games against division opponents over the last 2 seasons. The average score was TAMPA BAY 6.2, OPPONENT 4.7 - (Rating = 1*).

Pitching Probables for Sunday, August 14 - 1:05 ET
Sunday line: TBD
TB: 15-9 (+3.4 Units) when James Shields starts
NYY: 11-9 (+0.3 Units) when Freddy Garcia starts
Shields (11-9, 2.80 ERA) has bounced back strong since a disastrous start in Oakland to close out July (10 runs, 14 base runners in four innings). He held the Blue Jays to one run over 7.1 innings on August 3, then threw a six-hit shutout, striking out eight, against the Royals on Tuesday. Despite a 6-5 record at home (Tampa is 8-5 in his starts), Shields has been magnificent at Tropicana Field, posting a 2.15 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and recording quality starts in 11 of his 13 outings. He beat the Yankees at home on July 21, holding them to one run over 7.2 innings. In three starts against New York in 2011, he has a 1.59 ERA and 1.02 WHIP over 22.2 innings.
Garcia (10-7, 3.16 ERA) is chugging along nicely of late, going 3-0 with a 2.13 ERA in his past four starts. He threw 6.2 shutout innings, striking out seven and walking none, in a victory in Tampa on July 20. He’s won both of his starts against the Rays over the past two seasons, allowing just two runs, striking out 14 and walking only two over 13.2 innings.

Sunday's betting tips: Maybe there is a sure thing...

Weather to watch

The forecast for the final round of the PGA Championship at Atlanta Athletic Club: 87 degrees and humid, with 9 mile-per-hour winds. Starting at 7 p.m. there’s a 10 percent chance of rain.

Who’s hot

MLB: The Angels are 8-2 in Dan Haren’s last 10 starts.

MLB: Oakland is 39-16 in Rich Harden’s last 55 starts on grass.

WNBA: The Under is 12-3-1 in San Antonio’s last 16 games.

Who’s not

MLB: The Marlins are 0-6 in Chris Volstad’s last six starts against winning teams.

MLB: The Over is 1-7 in John Danks’ last eight starts for the White Sox.

WNBA: Minnesota is 0-4 ATS in its last four games.

Key stat

20 – The Giants set a MLB record with their 20th straight solo homer in Friday’s 2-1 loss to the Marlins. Pablo Sandoval hit the record-breaking homer, then Jeff Keppinger hit the 21st straight solo shot on Saturday. The streak began July 6 when Nate Schierholtz beat the Padres with a 14th-inning solo shot. In the fourth inning of that 6-5 win, Schierholtz had belted a two-run homer.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

With Huston Street on the DL with a right triceps train, the Rockies will have turned to Rafael Betancourt as a temporary closer. It might be an upgrade. Street converted 29 of 32 chances, but was just 1-3 with a 4.06 ERA after allowing runs in three of his four August appearances. Betancourt got his first save last Tuesday at Cincinnati and has not allowed an earned run since July 7. Betancourt has a better ERA (3.61), WHIP (1.08 to Street’s 1.18) and strikeout ratio over nine innings (10.65 to 8.65).

Game of the day

Tampa Bay Rays at New York Yankees

Notable quotable

"They questioned me last year and they're still kind of questioning me now. I've just got to go show them so they can stop questioning me." – Jets running back Joe McKnight, who will get plenty of touches in Monday’s preseason opener at Houston, to the New York Post. If McKnight has a good preseason, his role will increase at the expense of aging LaDainian Tomlinson. The Texans are favored by 2.5 points.

Notes and tips

The Falcons made a point of showcasing rookie WR Julio Jones in their preseason opener. They sent a message to the rest of the league that if you want to double Roddy White, you’re going to pay. Jones, a 6-3, 220-pound stud out of Alabama, caught two balls for 43 yards and took a reverse for 12 more against Miami’s starting defense. It sure looked like Atlanta got the explosiveness it wanted when it traded a bunch of picks to grab Jones at No. 6 overall.

The slumping Pirates placed newly acquired first baseman Derrek Lee on the 15-day DL with a fractured bone in his left wrist. He was hit by a pitch on Aug. 3 and has been trying to play through the injury. It’s just the latest sad turn for Pittsburgh, which was buoyed by Lee’s two homers in his Aug. 1 debut. The Pirates recalled infielder Josh Harrison from Triple-A Indianapolis.

They say there’s no such thing as a sure thing. But how about the Brewers vs. the Pirates at Miller Park? Milwaukee has won 35 of its last 38 home games against Pittsburgh, including 11 straight. The Brewers also had a 22-game home win streak against Pittsburgh snapped last year. And it’s not like the Pirates are terrible on the road this year. They are 30-30 away from PNC Park.

Sunday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

Dan Haren, Los Angeles Angels (12-6, 2.91 ERA)

Despite giving up four runs to the Yankees his last time out, Haren won for the sixth time in seven decisions. He allowed one run in each of his previous three starts. Opponents are batting .225 against him.

Charlie Morton, Pittsburgh Pirates (9-6, 3.56 ERA)

The 27-year-old right-hander has not been scored upon in his last two starts covering 15 innings. He struck out 11 and allowed 11 hits in those outings. Right-handed hitters are batting .194 against him.

Slumping

Jordan Lyles, Houston Astros (1-6, 4.88 ERA)

Batters are hitting a healthy .280 against Lyles after he was shellacked for seven earned runs and 12 hits in five innings vs. Arizona last week. Houston has lost 11 of his last 12 starts.

Jason Marquis, Arizona Diamondbacks (8-6, 4.48 ERA)

In two starts since being acquired from the Nationals, Marquis has given up 11 earned runs and 19 hits, including two homers, over eight innings. Batters are hitting .295 against Marquis, whose ERA is up nearly a run since June 23.

Sunday Night Baseball: Rockies at Cardinals
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Colorado Rockies at St. Louis Cardinals (-152, 8.5)

The St. Louis Cardinals return to ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball for the second time in three weeks when they host the Colorado Rockies in the finale of their three-game series.

CARDINAL RULE

The Cardinals have won three of their first four games against the Rockies this season, including taking two of three from the Rockies in Coors Field back in May. In game one of this series, St. Louis used a five-run sixth inning to defeat the Rockies 6-1. Dating back to last season, St. Louis has won seven of its last eight against Colorado, including five in a row in St. Louis.

ON HOLLIDAY

The Cardinals returned a big bat to the lineup Friday, getting outfielder Matt Holliday back from a lower back injury that kept him out for two games. Holliday went 1 for 4 with an RBI double in Friday’s win over the Rockies carried a six-game hitting streak into Saturday’s Game 2.

"He said when he came in he's good to go," Cardinals manager Tony La Russa told reporters. "I said, 'I'll write you in and then we'll take the workout and finish hitting.' He said, 'Thumbs up.'"

Holliday, who played five seasons in Colorado, has a career .367 BA with three home runs in 15 games against his former club, heading into Saturday. He’s hitting .318 with 18 home runs on the season, and has been red hot in August, batting .382 with four home runs and 11 RBI.

MR. ROGERS NEIGHBORHOOD

Colorado’s starter Sunday night, Esmil Rogers, has been superb when he leaves Coors Field. The Rockies are 4-0 in his four road starts this season. In his last start, Rogers went six innings and allowed two earned run in a 3-2 win in Cincinnati Tuesday. He also owns wins at Wrigley Field, Citi Field and PNC Park.

ED “WIN” JACKSON

You can’t spell Edwin without “W-I-N”, but it has been tough to get wins out of Jackson when he’s pitching in the National League. Jackson has spent at least parts of five seasons in the National League during his nine-year career. His worst ERA’s have come from his days with the Dodgers (7.30 in 2004, 6.28 in 2005) and Arizona (5.16 in 2010). He has been a far more effective pitcher in the American League. Before being traded to the Cardinals, Jackson was 7-7 with a 3.92 ERA for the White Sox. In his first three starts with the Red Birds, Jackson is 1-1 with a 4.95 ERA and he has already yielded five home runs.

BETTORS BEWARE

The Rockies have been the second-worst bet in all of baseball. If you wagered $100 on Colorado every game this season you would be down $2,251. Through Friday, Colorado is 55-65 and 11.5 games out of first place in the NL West.

And even though the Cardinals are 64-55 as of Friday and only four games back in the NL Central, St. Louis has not been a moneymaker at the pay window. The Cards are slightly below break-even, as $100 bettors would have lost $61 dollars on them this entire season.

NOTEWORTHY NUMBERS

- Colorado pitchers have a 5.91 ERA against the Cardinals this season.
- St. Louis pitchers have a 5.40 ERA against the Rockies this season.
- Colorado is 2-9 in its last 11 road games vs. a team with a winning record.
- St. Louis is 7-1 in its last eight games vs. a right-handed starter.
- Colorado is 6-13 in its last 19 road games vs. a right-handed starter.

Hot lines: Sunday's best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Angels at Toronto Blue Jays (+120, 7.5)

The Angels will send out right-hander Dan Haren, who has a sick WHIP of 0.85 over his last three starts, to win Sunday’s rubber game in Toronto.

Los Angeles has won Haren’s last six Sunday starts, and eight of his last 10 overall.

The Blue Jays’ Brett Cecil also has pitched well lately, but the Angels are 6-1 in their last seven games against lefty starters. In three career starts against Los Angeles, Cecil has yielded four homers and 12 earned runs in 18 innings.

The Angels had won four straight in Toronto until Saturday’s 11-2 setback.

Pick: Angels

New York Mets at Arizona Diamondbacks (-138, 10)

Right about now Arizona might be wishing it had stuck with Micah Owings instead of trading for Jason Marquis. In two starts as a Diamondback, Marquis has allowed 11 earned runs and 19 hits in eight innings.

The Mets will counter with lefty Chris Capuano, who has a 6.23 ERA in his last three starts.

The two starters have posted a combined 26-18 O/U mark this season.

These teams had played over the total in five of seven meetings heading into Saturday night’s game.

Pick: Over

Sunday's six-pack

-- Indianapolis Colts are now 4-23 in preseason games since 2005.

-- Detroit Lions are 2-31 in their last 33 NFC North road games.

-- Willie Bloomquist is the first Arizona State alum to play for Arizona Diamondbacks, which is a little hard to believe, but it is true.

-- Diamondback pitchers have 28 RBI this year, most in the majors.

-- 11 golfers made the cut at all four majors this year.

-- Who is the only US President whose presidential library is located in Iowa? Answer is down below in today's List of 13.

****************

Sunday's List of 13: Random stuff on a summer day

13) Strong rumors are out there that Texas A&M is jumping to the SEC; if true, then another round of musical chairs is about to begin, as far as what schools go to what leagues.

Do the math, and the Big Dozen hasn't got long to live- Texas will jump to the Pac-16, which would probably be looking at Oklahoma-Oklahoma State and Baylor or Texas Tech.

12) Missouri would probably go to the SEC with A&M, Kansas would go to the Big East (big loser in all this will be geography teachers), which leaves Iowa State, Kansas State and Baylor/Texas Tech in limbo. This is all driven by football. As someone whose main activity is handicapping basketball, it creates a weird scenario with such big leagues now.

11) Now if the SEC takes Florida State instead of Missouri, that would leave the remnants of the Big 12 to annex Conference USA and still be a pretty good football league, albeit one with a lot less money. Its useless for me to even form opinions on this, just have to try and understand the ramifications of what happens if/when it all happens. Weird stuff.

10) Dan Uggla has 32 RBI during his 33-game hitting streak.

9) Ryan Howard has 13 RBI in 14 games since Hunter Pence has been on the Phillies; is Howard getting better pitches to hit?

8) Oakland Raiders have had seven head coaches in the last ten seasons. Pittsburgh Steelers have had three head coaches in the last 42 seasons.

7) Steelers' backup QB Dennis Dixon asked for a trade earlier this month, then he went out and was 1-10 for 29 yards in the preseason opener. If he wants to get traded to an NFL team, he better start playing better. There are teams in the CFL that I'm sure would love to have him.

6) I'm against wagering on NFL preseason games; what you're doing is guessing which team will try harder. Rex Grossman was 19-26/207 Friday for the Redskins; Ben Roethlisberger was 2-3/22 for Pittsburgh. One team tried much harder to win. Not sure how you figure that out beforehand.

5) There will be widespread panic in the New York media this week after the New Jersey Giants' offense had only 13 first downs and three points in a loss at Carolina. Cam Newton was 8-19/134 in his pro debut, and it struck me as newsworthy that Newton didn't run the ball once. Thought Newton looked OK, considering he was working with the #2 WR group.

4) Tennessee rookie Jake Locker, who I was very high on in his college days until his dismal senior season, was 7-10/89 yards in Titans' 14-3 win over Minnesota. Too bad Locker wasn't 7-10 more often in his days with U-Dub; he would've gotten drafted a lot higher than he did.

3) Cubs suspended Carlos Zambrano for 30 days without pay for being a jackass Friday night after he was pounded by the Braves. He threatened to quit, he took his stuff back to the hotel, all stuff little kids do when they don't get their way. He was repentant Saturday, but it was too late.

2) CBS had at least two highlight packages of 2-3 minutes each Saturday on the struggles of Eldrick Woods, who missed the cut Friday by a mere six shots. Woods is pretty much done for the year now, since he isn't in the tournament next week, so he won't qualify for the Tour playoffs. He is yesterday's news, but CBS hasn't figured that out yet.

1) All this conference shuffling could conceivably get SMU and all of its deep-pocketed alumni back into a BCS conference; if that happens, then June Jones III is either the smartest guy around or the successor to Lou Gehrig as the luckiest man on the face of the earth.

Answer to quiz: Herbert Hoover's library is located in Iowa.

Lady Luck: Sunday's best WNBA bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Sky at San Antonio Silver Stars (-5.5, 146)

Chicago is not what you’d call a good road team. The Sky are 2-9 SU and 3-8 ATS away from the Windy City.

With the exception of a July 28 win over woeful Tulsa, Chicago has lost its previous four road games by an average of 10.8 points.

The Silver Stars are coming off a huge win Thursday night at Connecticut. Becky Hammon scored 18 points and Sophia Young 15 in the 72-59 win.

In the only previous meeting this season, San Antonio beat the Sky 84-74 in Chicago as five players scored in double figures.

Pick: San Antonio

Tulsa Shock at Minnesota Lynx (-16.5, 151)

The WNBA’s best and worst get together on Sunday as the Lynx (17-5) host the Shock (1-21), whose only victory came June 18 against Washington.

In two previous meetings this year, Minnesota won 101-71 in Tulsa on June 30 and 75-65 at home on June 7.

While the Shock have almost no shot to win this one, they are playing better defense lately. They’ve allowed 77, 71 and 72 points the last three times out. The under is 8-0 in Tulsa’s last eight road games. Tulsa is also on a 9-2-1 under streak overall.

The Lynx aren’t quite pouring it on like they were earlier this season. Four of their last six games have gone under.

Pick: Under
