Associated Press

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — A study commissioned by the Jockey Club cites casinos, online poker, and poor public perception of horse-racing as major factors in the decline of the racing industry.

The consulting firm McKinsey & Company presented the findings of its study on Sunday during an annual Jockey Club Round Table. The study will form the foundation of a multi-million-dollar series of initiatives over the next several years to move the sport forward.

While the study determined that racing has lost substantial gambling market share to casinos and online poker, it also identified strength in the core product. Kentucky Derby attendance is up by 8 percent since 2000. Betting handle on Grade I and Grade II races has increased by 23 percent per race over the past decade.

However, the study notes that overall betting handle is down by 37 percent, and attendance at racetracks is down by 30 percent.

If current trends continue, the research firm estimates, thoroughbred racing will lose fans at a rate of 4 percent a year, and by 2020 the fan base will be only 64 percent of what it was in 2010.

Only 22 percent of the general public has a positive impression of the racing, the report said. In the face of racing's decline in image, commercial casinos in the United States grew 34 percent from 2001 to 2010. Casinos at racetracks now account for $6.7 billion in wagering.

There are currently 854,000 slot machines in 939 casinos across 38 states. For a new bettor, online and casino gambling offer significant advantages over thoroughbred racing. They are available around the clock and easily learned.

The report said current trends will lead to a 27 percent decline in number of viable tracks, a 25 percent decline in tax revenue paid to states and a 50 percent increase in losses to horse owners by 2020. Negative trends in the breeding industry will also steepen as the demand for horses declines.

I must tell you, upon my return to Vegas, I have never witnessed the RACE BOOKS as busy as they are.............they are doing a great business.

The South Point is off the charts..........hardly a seat to be had on most days(good comp program).

However, everywhere I go, RACE BOOKS seem to be doing very well.

I would guess that more and more serious players are off shore and with rebate shops... Or on line with Twinspires etc. I know I have not Been to a otb or the track in 10 years, I sit at home or office and enjoy.

I've been hearing how racing has been dead since I was a kid.

Yet, the ponies are still running.

Exactly the same thing that doomed Greyhound racing. There is only so much expendable gambling $$. Greyhound racing in Portland used to be huge in Oregon. They once drew 33,000 fans ! Video poker games in every tavern, Indian Casinos everywhere and Sports lottery killed the Sport nationwide and in Oregon in particular. Greyhound racing is just a shadow of it's former self.^<<^

Used to be a greyhound arena downtown here in Ct.
They used to pack it in.

No more, now it's just simulcasting

Sorry Fish but Seeing people in the Casino " Race Books " is a lot different than lots of people at Race Tracks. The Casino Race Books is just another type of Casino gambling and really does very little to help support the Horse people. Take it from me because I raced greyhounds for years and the simulcasting just doesn't replace the fans in the stands. MKC ** Multnomah Kennel Club } in Portland went to simulcasting and it didn't help us dog people stay in business and MKC was one of the top Greyhound facilities in the country. going to watch the greyhounds live was always a fun day but wagering on the dogs in a smokie Race Book is not the same.

I think the Story is a Joke.

This has been happening ever since.... well since Slice Bread !

ok, Joking aside ...... From the time that OTB's came in the picture back in the late 70's early 80's this has been the case. Throw in the fact that you can watch the Races on TV, Open a betting account ( be it, OTB, now the Track has it ) Plus all the other Legal OTB accounts that you can open up. Why would anyone want to go to the Track on a Daily Basis !

there's no need to !

and race Tracks Shouldn't be Bitching Either ! They get a Cut ! They Wanted it !

I was in this business for a Very Long Time .... I remember all this shit back then.
Remember when they Voted this in.

I also remember back in the day where there were 30-40K People at Roosevelt Raceway ( Harness Track ) on a Week Night ! not a Weekend !

But the Tracks thought they would Cash in on OTB :ohno: @)
JOKE !

and Unless you Fix up some of these Dumps, maybe... just maybe a few more Might make it out for the day ( or Night )

You are both right and wrong. The places have been going down hill ever since all the other forms of gambling came of age. However what that caused was a total loss of fans in the stands ! Loss of fans in the stands has resulted in a huge loss of revenue and the so called kick back from simulcasting hasn't come close to replacing the loss of cash flow. take it from someone like me that owned and raced greyhounds... the cash just disapeared to the point that neither the kennel owners or track operators could afford to stay in the business. I told the story of 33,000 fans attending a greyhound race at MKC and 15 years ago you could throw a bowling ball and not hit a fan. Why does it come as a surprise that the tracks are either out of business or having trouble meeting their upkeep ?

This. Most people these days don't have the attention span and/or patience to handicap a race and then wait 15-20 minutes between races. It's all about instant gratification. The crowds at most tracks I've been to skews old. Lots of young folks around too, but they are there for something to do (get drunk, etc.), they will not become regulars in large part. The only way that most tracks will survive is if they turn into 'racinos'. The Indian casinos obliterated greyhound racing in Wisconsin. There is a dog track going in Dubuque, but it's got a casino.

this summer ive gone to Arlington usually once a week always seems somewhat crowded but it is younger crowds not to many of the boxes are filled. But i only see it going down as another casino is within 20 miles of the place now. Supposed to get slots soon but only in hours of operation really cant figure out why with all that land, a huge hotel on the land they couldnt get a casino there intersects 3 diff highways so its real easy to get to and from
