LA Angels Continue Series With Texas Rangers

The Los Angeles Angels will try to inch closer to first place in the American League West when they host the Texas Rangers in the second game of a key four-game series on Tuesday. Game time is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. (PT).

The Angels returned home from a disappointing six-game road trip on Monday that saw them lose four of the last five games to fall four games behind the division-leading Rangers.

Texas had won three straight and six of seven heading into Monday’s series opener following a three-game sweep at Oakland to start a 10-game road trip. The Rangers wrap up the trip with a three-game series against the Chicago White Sox this weekend.

Derek Holland (10-4, 4.30 ERA) gets the call to face Los Angeles for the third time this year and hopes the third time is a charm after Texas lost twice previously with him on the mound in the season series. He is 3-3 lifetime against the Angels with a 5.81 ERA and surrendered seven runs and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings of a 9-8 loss the last time he faced them on July 20.

Holland did not get a decision though in either of his two starts vs. LA this year, and he has pitched better on the road this season with a 5-2 record and 3.42 ERA. The southpaw has not lost a decision since July 2 against Florida as a 160 favorite, going 4-0 in his last seven outings.

Three of his last four starts have come at home, and his last one on the road resulted in a 3-0 complete-game shutout at Toronto on July 30.

The Angels will counter with rookie Tyler Chatwood (6-8, 4.07), who has won only once in his past seven outings. His team is 1-6 in those games, including a 7-0 home loss to Texas on July 19. He gave up three runs and seven hits to the Rangers in five innings and has pitched a full seven innings just one time during that stretch, resulting in the lone victory.

Chatwood has struggled mightily at home this year, going 2-6 in 12 starts there with a 4.24 ERA. Three of his last four starts have come on the road, including a 6-5 loss at New York last time out on Thursday in which he walked away with a no-decision after allowing two runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings.

He dropped his last start at home against Seattle on August 6 as a 145 favorite, giving up all five runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings of a 5-1 loss. The ‘over’ is 3-1 in his past four outings.

Los Angeles led the season series 5-4 going into Monday, and the teams play two series following this one. The Angels will head to Texas for a three-game set the last weekend of August before hosting the Rangers in the final three games of the regular season.

Tuesday’s game-time weather forecast for Anaheim calls for a temperature of 76 degrees under partly cloudy skies, cooling to the upper-60s as the game progresses.

Arizona Diamondbacks At Philadelphia Phillies MLB Odds Preview

The Arizona Diamondbacks are the surprise story of Major League Baseball. They get to prove they’re for real against baseball’s best team Tuesday night in Philadelphia.

First pitch from Citizens Bank Park will be at 4:00 p.m. (PT). Josh Collmenter will go against the NL Cy Young favorite in Roy Halladay. Both teams are off Monday heading into this potential first-round playoff preview.

The Diamondbacks (68-53) have been feasting on easy competition lately, but begin a tough 10-game road trip that continues at Atlanta and Washington. Those teams are a combined 109-63 at home (63.3 percent), with even the Nationals at 32-23.

Arizona has already surpassed its 2010 win total (65), comes in on a 6-game winning streak and is 19-10 post all-star break. The last two series were home against the Mets and Houston, with only two of its nine series since the break against teams with winning records.

Manager Kirk Gibson has done a great job in his first full year with the team. Arizona is third in the NL in runs scored after ranking eighth last year. The improvement of the bullpen from last year (5.74 ERA) to this (3.79 ERA) has been a huge help. Closer J.J. Putz has 29 saves and a 2.91 ERA.

Collmenter (7-7, 3.51 ERA) is a rookie right-hander who started the season in the minors. The unheralded prospect made seven relief appearances before moving into the rotation for good on May 14.

The 25-year-old posted a 1.04 ERA in his first six starts, with Arizona going 5-1. Batters have seemed to figure him out the last 10 starts (5.56 ERA), with the team winning just three. He did pitch well (two earned runs over seven innings) versus Houston last Wednesday.

Collmenter has an unorthodox delivery, but doesn’t throw hard and his strikeout rate is 5.91. He has done a good job with just 20 walks in 105 innings.

This is his first appearance at Citizens Bank Park with a 4.10 road ERA overall (3.02 at home). He did face Philly in relief in April, pitching a scoreless inning.

The Phillies (78-41) are on pace to win 106 games and haven’t slowed up lately with 13 wins in their last 15 games. Their Sunday game with Washington was postponed and will be rescheduled in September.

Halladay (15-4, 2.51 ERA) was to have pitched on Sunday and now has seven full days of rest between starts. That’s important as he’s tied for first in the NL in innings pitched (175 2/3) and needs to be fresh come playoff time.

The 34-year-old right-hander won the Cy Young award last year with Philly and in 2003 with Toronto. Philly has won his last four starts and incredibly 20-of-24 for the year. His home ERA is 2.26 with the Phillies winning 12 of 13 starts.

This is Halladay’s first appearance against the Diamondbacks this year. He’s 3-0 with a 2.61 ERA in three lifetime starts against them. The one with Philly was home last July, throwing a complete-game while allowing just one run (7-1 win).

The Diamondbacks went 2-1 at home in April in the first meeting between the teams. They’re 0-7 in their last seven contests in Philadelphia (the ‘over’ 5-2).

Arizona is 32-27 away (+11.5 units) with the ‘over’ 18-6-2 in Arizona’s last 26 road games. Philadelphia is 42-19 at home (+11.8 units), with the ‘over’ 4-1 in its last five there.

Philly third baseman Placido Polanco (sports hernia) is questionable Tuesday after last playing on August 6.

Weather will be in the 70s with scattered thunderstorms. Philly’s parade of aces continues Wednesday with a rested Cliff Lee against Joe Saunders on ESPN.

Rays And Red Sox Play Two in Boston

The Tampa Bay Rays and the Boston Red Sox begin a two-day, three-game, pivotal series Tuesday afternoon at Fenway Park in Boston. With their team’s respective aces on the mound in an afternoon matinee at Fenway Park, this will be a game to pay attention to early Tuesday.

The first game of the series gets underway at 10:05 a.m. (PT) with James Shields (11-9, 2.80) on the hill for Tampa Bay and left-hander Jon Lester (11-6, 3.32) for Boston.

Game 2 of the Tuesday doubleheader is scheduled to start at 4:05 p.m. (PT) with Jeff Niemann opposing Erik Bedard.

The Rays begin this road series nine games back of Boston in the AL East standings, and 8.5-games behind the New York Yankees who sit only a half-game back from the first-place Red Sox. For Tampa Bay to catch either Boston or New York for a playoff spot, the Rays have to win the head-to-head meetings left with those two clubs.

When looking inside the numbers, it is interesting to note Lester has only two wins in his last eight starts and the Red Sox are 3-5 as a team during that stretch. Lester has a career record of 6-4 when pitching at home versus the Rays, and that record should come into play when Lester faces one of the two Rays aces in James Shields.

Shields has put up 2.80 ERA and only allowed two earned runs in his last three winning starts against the Kansas City Royals, Toronto Blue Jays and Yankees, all of those starts at home. The key to Shields though, has been his recent struggles on the road where he has lost his last three starts.

Shields has a career 6-10 record against the Red Sox with an ERA just below 5.00, but those numbers do not do the Red Sox dominance justice. Shields is an awful 1-7 in his eight career starts at Fenway Park.

After losing two out their three weekend games in Seattle, Boston will be looking to bounce back at home against the third place team in their division.

The Red Sox are 4-0 in their last four meetings when Lester faces Shields and the Rays are 3-8 in their last 11 opening games of a doubleheader.

Boston has not lost a home series since the middle of June against the San Diego Padres and they are in the top five teams in baseball with a 37-22 home record this season.

Tampa Bay is averaging 3.7 runs scored per game in their last eight games overall and that type of run support may not be enough to salvage a game or two in this very key three-game series against the Red Sox.

The scheduled forecast for this opening game of Tuesdays twinbill includes a 40 percent chance of showers that could linger all afternoon.

Indians open key 3-game set in Chicago

CLEVELAND INDIANS (60-57, +9.4 Units)

at CHICAGO WHITE SOX (60-60, -4.5 Units)

First pitch: Tuesday, 8:10 p.m. EDT
Line: Chicago -120, Cleveland +110, Total: 8

The Cleveland Indians will travel to Chicago and play a very pivotal three-game series against the White Sox starting Tuesday night. The streaking White Sox and Indians both are chasing the struggling Tigers atop the AL Central Division. Cleveland has won four of five and are two games back of Detroit and 1½ up on the White Sox, who are 8-2 in their past 10 games.

Cleveland will send Ubaldo Jimenez to the mound Monday night to face Gavin Floyd. Jimenez threw a gem his last outing, tossing eight innings, allowing no earned runs and striking out six in a 10-3 victory over Detroit on Wednesday. Floyd has been horrible at home this year, posting a 7.06 ERA and 1.41 WHIP, while his team has gone 3-6 in these nine starts. Cleveland has played well in night games (47-37, +14.3 Units) and has been a winning bet on the road (+1.6 Units, 27-32). In addition to Floyd’s home problems, Chicago as a team is only 26-33 (-16.3 Units) on its home turf. Expect a big performance from Jimenez to lead CLEVELAND to an important road victory Tuesday night.

The FoxSheets show a three-star trend supporting the Indians pick.

Play On - Any team (CLEVELAND) - poor hitting team (AVG <=.260) against a decent starting pitcher (ERA=4.20 to 4.70) -AL, with a starting pitcher whose strikes out 5 or more batters per start. (91-41 over the last 5 seasons.) (68.9%, +47.1 units. Rating = 3*).

In the only start for Jimenez (7-9, 4.37 ERA) against Chicago on June 29, he threw seven innings, allowing four hits and two runs in a 3-2 loss as a member of the Rockies. He has been much better on the road this year, sporting a 3.80 ERA and 1.15 WHIP with 74 K’s in 66.1 innings.

The White Sox have dominated Cleveland recently, winning 12 of 14 meetings, including a 6-1 mark this year. Floyd (10-10, 4.53 ERA) has been terrific against the Indians this year, going 2-0 and allowing just one run in 14 2/3 innings. He is 6-3 with a 4.25 ERA in 10 career starts against them.

Carpenter tries to retain dominance over Pirates

ST. LOUIS CARDINALS (65-57, -3.3 Units)

at PITTSBURGH PIRATES (57-63, +5.4 Units)

First pitch: Tuesday, 7:05 p.m. EDT
Line: St. Louis -145, Pittsburgh +135, Total: 7.5

St. Louis needs to make up some room on the surging Brewers, but Jeff Karstens and the Pirates will look to follow up Monday’s victory with a repeat performance on Tuesday night. Ryan Doumit went 4-for-4 Monday night, with a three-run dinger to lead Pittsburgh to a 6-2 victory in the series opener.

Chris Carpenter has had quite a career against the Pirates, going 12-2 with a 2.24 ERA in 17 career starts. St. Louis has been effective as a road favorite of -125 to -150, going 14-6 (70%) this year. The Cards also have done a good job of bouncing back after losses (32-25). Jeff Karstens has only pitched 1.1 scoreless innings of relief this year against the Cardinals, but last season threw 12 scoreless innings against St. Louis. However, Pittsburgh has been lackluster against right-handed pitchers (38-49) and also has not been able to beat teams with a winning record (21-28). The pick is for ST. LOUIS to bounce back with its ace on the mound and handle the Pirates.

This three star FoxSheets trend also backs the Cardinals.

Play Against - All underdogs with a money line of +125 to +175 (PITTSBURGH) - bad offensive team (<=4.1 runs/game) against a good starting pitcher (ERA<=3.70) (NL), with a decent bullpen whose WHIP is 1.350 to 1.450 on the season. (83-26 over the last 5 seasons.) (76.1%, +42.3 units. Rating = 3*).

Carpenter (8-8, 3.68 ERA) has been terrific in his past 10 starts, going 7-1 with a 2.60 ERA. He’s coming off a strong pitching performance Thursday against division leading Milwaukee, in which he threw eight innings, allowing only two runs (despite surrendering 10 hits and three walks) in a 5-2 victory. The Cardinals now find themselves six games behind the Brewers in the NL Central. Albert Pujols will look to jump start the St. Louis offense with his .384 average and 27 homers in 84 career games at PNC Park.

Karstens (9-6, 3.04 ERA) has been a nice surprise this year and at one point was the NL leader in ERA (2.28). He has allowed more than 3 ER only twice in his 21 starts this season. The Padres rocked him for nine runs in 3.1 innings on Aug. 5, but he bounced back nicely with a six-inning, two-run, nine-strikeout performance in a win at San Francisco last Wednesday. The Pirates get back Jose Tabata Tuesday night from a quad injury. Tabata has been out since June 27 so he could be rusty, but has hit safely in all 15 career games against St. Louis, posting a .397 BA.

Tuesday’s betting tips: Doc tops MLB money list

Who’s hot

MLB: Philadelphia has won 41 of its last 56 games overall and has taken 11 of its last 16 meetings with Arizona.

MLB: The over is 7-2 in Tampa Bay’s last nine road games.

WNBA: Phoenix has covered the spread in seven of its last 10 home games.

Who’s not

MLB: The New York Mets had won eight of its last 28 games in San Diego heading into Monday’s action.

MLB: Cincinnati has won just three of its last 10 road games.

WNBA: The over is 3-12-1 in San Antonio’s last 16 contests.

Key stat

3 – The Cleveland Indians have been held to three runs in five or their last six games, but have still managed to go 4-2 over during that span. The under is also 5-1 during the club’s run.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Pablo Sandoval, San Francisco Giants – Sandoval was forced to leave Monday’s game against Atlanta with a foot injury in the first inning after fouling a ball off his foot. Sandoval, who already missed a bunch of time earlier this season with a wrist injury, is hitting .309 with 14 dingers in 80 games this season.

Game of the day

Texas Rangers at Los Angeles Angels (+115, 8.5)

Notable quotable

"We can build on this. Everybody knows we had a rough start. If we can get into the playoffs again, I really think we have a really good chance of getting back and winning the whole thing." – Atlanta Dream’s Angel McCoughtry ahead of Tuesday’s game against Los Angeles. The Dream have won eight of their last 11 straight up, covering six times over that stretch.

Notes and tips

It’s guaranteed win day again with Philadelphia’s Roy Halladay climbing the hill against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Halladay has been as close to a sure thing as you’re going to get in MLB betting this season with Philadelphia winning 20 of his 24 starts, earning his supporters a league-leading 13.9 units. You’ll have to ante up for a Doc bet again Tuesday with he and the Phils set around -225 against Josh Collmenter and the Diamondbacks.

Just after the San Francisco 49ers admitted Alex Smith isn’t their clear-cut No. 1 starter, they added to the drama by bringing in Daunte Culpepper for a workout. Now reports from CSNBayArea.com indicate that the club will sign the veteran quarterback to a one-year deal. Smith was just 2-of-7 for 10 yards with two sacks in San Francisco’s 24-3 loss to New Orleans in Week 1 of preseason play.

The Minnesota Lynx lead the WNBA with a 18-5 straight up record and have covered 13 times this season. However, the Lynx have lost each of their last six visits to Connecticut heading into Tuesday’s date. "We're a team that's striving for perfection," coach Cheryl Reeve said. "We're carrying the label of the best team in the league. With that goes a lot of responsibility every time you step on the court to play great and be the great players that they are." The Lynx hammered the Sun 90-67 at home the last time the two teams hooked up and are set as 1.5-point road favorites Tuesday.

Jim Thome hit his 599th and 600th home runs in Monday’s win over Detroit, becoming the first player to ever get his last two dingers on the way to 600 on consecutive at-bats. He is the second-fastest player to reach 600 behind only Babe Ruth. Thome’s 64 homers against Detroit are the most against any MLB team and he and the Twins are back at it Tuesday as big +225 underdogs to the Tigers.

Tuesday's six-pack

-- Congrats to Jim Thome on his 600th HR Monday; from everything I've read, Thome is one of the best guys you'd want to meet.

-- Two-sport star Bubba Starling took around $8M from the Royals and will play baseball, instead of playing QB for Nebraska.

-- Minnesota traded Delmon Young to the Tigers Monday, and in his first AB against his old team, Young hit a homer. Go figure.

-- Brewers have now won 17 of their last 19 games.

-- Jerry Meals is umping the plate in Pittsburgh tonight; Pirates have been in the tank since Meals blew a call in the 19th inning in Atlanta, way back when the Pirates were tied for first place.

-- Thome's first career homer won a game for the Indians in the Bronx on October 4, 1991; it came off of Steve Farr in front of a gathering of 14,627 loyalists in the Bronx. Imagine, only 14,627 fans....hmmmm

***************

Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

13) Oakland Raiders won the coin toss in the preseason opener Thursday and elected to kick off, instead of deferring their choice to the second half; this meant that Arizona could choose to receive to start the second half, giving them an extra possession in the game. Honest mistake and a lesson learned, but makes you wonder if the coaching staff is up to being an NFL-caliber staff.

12) How happy would the Cubs be if Carlos Zambrano and his 8-figure salary retired? Would free up a lot of money to pursue Albert Pujols or Prince Fielder this winter. Also would save them lot of headaches from having to deal with the emotional Zambrano on a daily basis. Doubt Big Z’s agent (or his wife, if he’s married) would let him quit.

11) Weird thing about Zambrano’s latest outburst; before his bad outing Friday night, he had been 3-1, 2.92 in his previous four starts, so he had been pitching very well.

10) Colorado Rockies have now lost their last 17 Sunday games.

9) When Nick Saban was coaching the Miami Dolphins, he chose Daunte Culpepper over free agent Drew Brees (Brees had his shoulder operated on that winter); how would sports history be different had Saban signed Brees? Lot of peoples' lives changed on that one.

8) Milwaukee Brewers are 10-0 when Zack Greinke starts at Miller Park.

7) Logan Morrison knocked in 26 runs in July, tied for most in major leagues; on August 13, he was sent to the minor leagues, apparently for non-baseball reasons. Rumors have it the Marlins think he’s too full of himself. Safe to say he gets traded this winter.

6) Weird seeing Lee Majors doing ads for “bionic hearing aids” on late night TV. 30 years ago, Majors was a big TV star who was married to Farrah Fawcett, America’s heartthrob. Now? Not so much. One thing is for sure; fame is fleeting.

5) Green Bay Packer head coach Mike McCarthy was once a tollbooth operator on the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

4) New Orleans Saints are training for a week out in Oxnard, CA, to get out of the oppressive Louisiana heat. In the past, Saints and other teams trained in Wisconsin, thinking the lower humidity there would help them.

3) Alabama rookie Greg McElroy was 23-39/208 playing just about the whole game Monday night, as the Jets lost 20-16 in Houston. McElroy seems like a Chad Pennington/Pat Haden type. Smart, not the best arm.

2) I follow a lot of people on Twitter, but I never get mad with anything they tweet. If someone annoys you too much, just unfollow them, or if they’re tweeting about something you don’t care about, scroll past it. It’s a free country; its not a tweeter’s job to entertain us. They post what they want; its up to us if we want to read it or not.

1) New NFL rule this year is that teams kick off from the 35, not the 30-yard line. Well, everyone except the Bears, who kicked off twice from the 30 Saturday night, before a league official made them stop. Bears were doing it on purpose so they could practice covering kicks.

Tuesday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

Ryan Dempster, Chicago Cubs (10-8, 4.70 ERA)

We realize Doc and Verlander are on the hill Tuesday, but it’s getting a little old talking about those two every five days. Ryan Dempster, on the other hand, is one of the lone bright spots for the Cubs this year.

He has won each of his last three trips to the hill, compiling a 2.84 ERA with 17 strikeouts over that stretch. Dempster and the Cubs are set as early -145 road favorites against Houston.

Ivan Nova, New York Yankees (11-4, 3.85 ERA)

The Yanks have won each of Nova’s last eight starts as he’s cemented his spot in the rotation. After a dominating performance that saw the young righty fan 10 White Sox in 7 2/3 innings during a 7-2 win, Nova struggled a bit in his next start.

He walked three and didn’t strike out a batter while grinding through six innings of a 9-3 win over the Angels.

"When you don't have your good stuff and you can do that, that's a sign of maturity," manger Joe Girardi told reporters.

Slumping

Jonathan Sanchez, San Francisco Giants (4-7, 4.29 ERA)

Sanchez hasn’t won a start since June 2 and hasn’t made it through five innings in any of his last four trips to the bump.

He gave up four earned runs while walking four and also serving up a homer over 4 1/3 innings in a 9-2 loss to Pittsburgh in his last turn in the rotation.

"It's not going my way," Sanchez told reporters after that outing. ”I've just got to step up and start doing my job. I'm not making that pitch right now. It's tough to get people out when you're behind in the count."

Anibal Sanchez, Florida Marlins (6-6, 4.00 ERA)

Sanchez was rocked for five earns on seven hits during just 1 2/3 innings of work before he got the hook in a 6-2 loss to Atlanta last week. It was only the second time in 105 career starts that he didn’t get out of the second inning.

He has now gone 11 starts without a win and his ERA has jumped from 2.82 on July 1 to 4.00 now.

Rounding the bases: This week's best MLB trends
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every week, we update you on who's hot, who's not and situational betting spots in Major League Baseball.

HOT TEAM: Arizona Diamondbacks

THIS SEASON: 68-53
LAST WEEK: 6-1

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: At the Phillies for three, at the Braves for three.

THE SKINNY: At the All-Star break, two candidates stood out in the race for most surprising team of the year: Arizona and Pittsburgh. Well, the Pirates proved they could not handle the dog days of summer, leaving these Diamondbacks firmly on top of that race.

A five-game winning streak, including a sweep of the Mets, combined with an off day Monday had the Diamondbacks flying high as they prepared for a tough road trip. Despite San Francisco’s superb starting pitching, it’s Arizona that started the week in first place in the West.

There are good stories all over this team, but none better than closer J.J. Putz, who seemed all but done not too long ago. He’s been steady and stingy, and has five saves this month alone, headed into Tuesday’s series opener.

COLD TEAM: New York Mets

THIS SEASON: 58-62
LAST WEEK: 2-5

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: At the Padres for three, home to the Brewers for three.

THE SKINNY: Manager Terry Collins has thrown together some surprising runs this year in Queens, but injuries and trades have decreased this team’s potential for a strong run to the finish in his first season.

Even when they win these days, like in two games vs. San Diego last week, they had to rally furiously to do so. And they just don’t have the horses anymore to compete with teams who are in the thick of things. In fact, in six August games vs. possible playoff teams -- Atlanta and Arizona -- the Mets went 1-5.

The good news this week is that San Diego is on the docket. But that bad news is that Milwaukee is, too. And if you want a snapshot of the Mets’ long-term prospects the rest of the year, look no further than their offensive leaders through Sunday.

The leading hitter? Jose Reyes at .336. The leader in home runs? Carlos Beltran at 15. And RBIs? Beltran at 66. Well, Beltran is in San Francisco, has been for a while, and Reyes is on the DL. End of story.

OVER TEAM: Oakland Athletics

O/U THIS SEASON: 59-50-11
O/U LAST WEEK: 5-1

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: Home to the Orioles for three, home to the Blue Jays for four.

THE SKINNY: While we could have easily gone with the rock ‘em, sock ‘em Texas Rangers, who also went 5-1, we simply cannot ignore a team that is on a run for the ages.

Oakland may not have the season numbers that long-term bettors prefer. But let’s face it, this is a game of streaks, and the one the Athletics have thrown together is something to behold.

Heading into Monday’s series opener with Baltimore, Oakland had just one under in August, and just two since July 23. But the amazing number is post-All-Star break.

If you jumped on them, starting July 15, then you are one happy over player. Oakland, since then and before the Orioles series began, registered a 21-2-4 mark and turned one of the league’s most anonymous teams into perhaps the best over play in recent memory.

It’s been a perfect storm. The pitching has been bad, and the offense has been good. And in the American League, that’s all you need. In last week’s six games, Oakland and its opponents combined for 61 runs.

UNDER TEAM: Milwaukee Brewers

O/U THIS SEASON: 58-57-6
O/U LAST WEEK: 1-4-1

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: Home to the Dodgers for four, at the Mets for three.

THE SKINNY: As dominant a lineup as Milwaukee may have, the Brewers can pitch a little, too. And in this three-week run, where they’ve all but ended what looked like a dramatic NL Central race, this team has proven that.

With games against their chief competition, St. Louis and Pittsburgh, Milwaukee pulled out its playoff style, and beat teams with solid starting pitching, adequate relief work, and just enough offense.

In other words, under city, folks. Over the weekend, vs. Pittsburgh, was a clear example. The Brewers won all three games, but the final two by a combined 3-1 score. In fact, headed into Monday’s series opener vs. Los Angeles, Milwaukee had allowed two runs or less six times in August.

That’s the kind of pitching that’s not only working now, it may just work in the postseason, as well, when the competition stiffens. Keep Milwaukee on your under radar, moving forward.

Hot lines: Tuesday's best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tampa Bay Rays at Boston Red Sox (-155, 8)

James Shields wasn’t very pleased that Sunday’s rainout cost him a chance to go up against the Yankees.

"I was ready to go," Shields told reporters. "I feel really good right now, and I wanted to face these guys."

Instead, his start was bumped back so that he’ll open Tuesday’s doubleheader against the Red Sox and considering his history against the BoSox, he probably isn’t overly pleased about that either.

Shields, who is coming off a complete-game shutout of the Royals, is 1-7 with a 7.71 ERA in Camden Yards over his career and gave up six runs in a home loss to Boston the last time he faced the Red Sox.

We’re expecting some crooked numbers on the board to get this doubleheader started.

Pick: Over

Minnesota Twins at Detroit Tigers (-255, 8)

In need of some pop and a bit of protection for Miguel Cabrera in the batting order, the Detroit Tigers looked no further than the opposing dugout in swinging a deal for Minnesota’s Delmon Young on Monday.

"We like Delmon's bat," Tigers president/general manager Dave Dombrowski told reporters. "He's been swinging a lot better the second half of the year, had some injury factors early in the year. As you know, he drove in 112 runs last year. He's a guy that we fear[ed] a great deal, from an offensive perspective. We think that he can give us a little lift here from an offensive part of the game as we go forward the rest of the season and help us win this thing."

Young was hitting just .266 with four homers and 32 RBIs in 84 games with the Twins, but has been better since the All-Star break. Even though he homered in his first swing as a Tiger, he won’t be the center of attention on Tuesday as Justin Verlander takes the hill.

The Twins had just one win in 13 meetings with the Tigers heading into Monday’s action and we can’t see them getting much done against Verlander. Looks like the under is where the value is.

Pick: Under

Lady luck: Tuesday's best WNBA bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Atlanta Dream at Los Angeles Sparks (-1, 163)

The Los Angeles Sparks have had a pretty interesting season so far. They fired their coach and brought Jellybean Bryant in to man the bench, lost their best player to injury, and have still managed to hang around in the West’s playoff race.

They may get a huge boost with Candace Parker currently listed as probable to come back from a knee injury that put the team’s season in jeopardy seven weeks ago. Parker was the league’s 2008 Rookie of the Year and MVP, but has only played 35 games over the last two years due to injury and pregnancy.

"It will definitely be big,'' rookie center Jantel Lavender said of Parker’s possible return. "Candace is a major part of this team. With her inside presence, her rebounding and what she contributes to this team, it will definitely help us a little bit more toward getting into playoff position.”

They’re still in the race, but need to start moving up the board now. The Sparks have won two straight and have been a lot better at home this season. Parker’s return could make L.A. a nice play.

Pick: Sparks

Washington Mystics at New York Liberty (-8.5, 147.5)

If familiarity breeds contempt in the WNBA, look out for Tuesday’s Mystics-Liberty matchup at MSG. This will be the third time the two teams have hooked up in 11 days and while Washington has struggled all season, the Mystics do give the Liberty some problems.

Washington has upset New York in the last two games the two clubs have played, dropping the Liberty 64-63 at home as a 3.5-point underdog last week for the team’s fifth win of the season.

“We have played with tremendous heart and determination all year. There have been games that we have come up short, but we have been in every single game right up until the end," coach Trudi Lacey told reporters after losing at Connecticut over the weekend. "We played a tight game, we weren't as aggressive as I would have liked us to be."

It’s that kind of effort that has made the Mystics a decent wager this year. They head into Tuesday’s game at 10-11 against the spread.

Pick: Mystics
