In order to have a story on this show one of the following must be in place. The athlete has to be missing body parts, attempted suicide or had someone in their family commit suicide, one or both parents have been killed in a tragic accident or be dead from a drug overdose, the athlete has to have cancer or their sibling has cancer and is terminal, the athlete has to have brain damage or be autistic, athlete has to have suffered sexual abuse by a trusted individual, athlete has to be homeless or living in car, must be an alcoholic or recovering alcoholic, terminal athlete must visited by a pro in one of the four major sports. If the story is a tearjerker it must be done by a guy who use to do MTV news. I think that covers everything.
