Texas Rangers Open Home Set With Boston Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox and Texas Rangers are both likely to participate in the American League playoffs come October, but will first match up against each other in a four-game series starting Monday night at Rangers Ballpark.

A pair of southpaw starters will toe the rubber with the first pitch scheduled for 5:05 (PT) in the Lone Star State.

Boston is in a tug-of-war with the New York Yankees in the AL East Division and will be looking to gain revenge from getting swept by the Rangers in their previous series at tonight’s venue. The Red Sox were outscored by a 26-11 margin in the three-game set that started off the 2011 season.

It hasn’t been all bad against the AL West division, as the club is 15-10 overall against such opponents.

Erik Bedard (4-8, 3.44 ERA) is use to life on the West Coast after making his first 16 starts with Seattle before being traded to Beantown in July. The left-hander has yet to pick up a victory in three starts with his new club, coming in with an 0-1 record and 3.38 ERA.

He has tallied an even 3-3 record and 2.31 ERA in eight road starts this year, as opponents are hitting just .200 against him. Boston picked up a 4-3 road win over Minnesota in his only start away from Fenway Park in a Red Sox uniform (5 IP, 2 ER).

Bedard is 4-3 with a 3.22 ERA in 13 career starts versus the Rangers, which includes a 1-2 mark and 5.81 ERA in five outings at Rangers Ballpark.

Texas returns home from a winning road trip that included three victories in a four-game set against the Los Angeles Angels, the team directly behind them in the standings. The Rangers have registered a 39-23 home record during the 2011 season, which is currently second-best among AL teams.

C.J. Wilson (12-5, 3.20 ERA) will be aiming for a third-straight victory, picking up two wins over the Athletics and Angels on the club’s last road trip. He surrendered just three runs (two earned) and nine hits over 13 innings in that span.

The fifth-round selection out of Loyola Marymount is 5-1 with a 3.99 ERA in 12 home starts during the 2011 campaign, issuing 25 walks and compiling 69 strikeouts in 76 2/3 frames.

Wilson has enjoyed great success in 16 career appearances (four starts) versus the Red Sox, coming in with a 3-1 record and 1.69 ERA. He has yet to surrender a home run against them in 37 1/3 innings of work.

Boston manager Terry Francona may elect to sit outfielder Carl Crawford and designated hitter David Ortiz, as they are a combined 3-for-28 against him.

Weather forecasts suggest game-time temperatures around the century mark, which is nothing new for the Dallas area. Fans suffered through 40-straight days of 100-degree temperatures earlier this year.

LA Dodgers Visit Slipping St. Louis Cardinals

Losing ground fast in the NL Central standings, the St. Louis Cardinals will try to gain some ground in the opener of their three-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers Monday night.

Monday’s game starts at 5:15 p.m. (PT) at Busch Stadium, and pits veteran Chris Carpenter against rookie Nathan Eovaldi.

The Dodgers, barring a shocking turnaround to finish the season, have been out of the playoff hunt for a while, and the Cardinals may soon join them if they don’t start picking up some wins. St. Louis entered Sunday night's contest in Chicago having lost four of the last five (-4.25 units) and seven of 11, falling to 8.5-games behind the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central race.

The Cardinals have two more series against the Brewers left on their schedule, but need to pick up ground this week in this series with the Dodgers followed by a four-game series against Pittsburgh.

Carpenter (8-8, 3.68 ERA) hasn’t been his usual dominant self this season, but the Cardinals are 8-3 in his 11 starts since June 23 (+3.60 units). He gave up two runs or less in seven of those 11 starts.

The big righty has owned Los Angeles over nine career outings, boasting a 6-0 record with a 1.57 ERA and a 0.92 WHIP. In his one start against th Dodgers this season on April 17, Carpenter pitched seven shutout innings with six strikeouts only to pick up a no-decision as the Cardinals failed to solve Chad Billingsley and lost the game.

Los Angeles (57-68) is 5-8 over its last 13 games (-3.05 units), and three of those wins came against the hapless Houston Astros. Owner Frank McCourt’s legal and financial issues continue to plague the team both on and off the field.

Eovaldi (1-1, 2.12 ERA) takes the mound for just the fourth time in his young career. Early returns are promising as Eovaldi has surrendered two runs or less in all three of his starts, leading the Dodgers to a 2-1 record (+1.30 units).

This will be Eovaldi’s first career start against the St. Louis Cardinals. The total has gone ‘under’ in all three of his assignments.

The Cardinals won a four-game series against the Dodgers in Los Angeles back in April, 3-1. Three of the four games went ‘over’ the posted total.

Lately, both teams have trended towards the ‘under.’ St. Louis entered Sunday's game having gone ‘under’ in seven of their last 10 games and Los Angeles going ‘under’ in four of their last six.

Los Angeles is 26-34 on the road (-5.55 units) this season and St. Louis is 32-27 at home (-5.70 units).

SS Dee Gordon (shoulder) and 3B Juan Uribe (groin) are on the disabled list for the Dodgers.

Weather shouldn’t be a factor Monday as clear skies and calm winds are expected. Tuesday’s pitching matchup will feature Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw and Kyle Lohse.

Cliff Lee, Phillies Host New York Mets In MLB Odds Clash

From the frying pan into the fire go the New York Mets. Hosts to the red-hot Milwaukee Brewers this past weekend following a trip out west, Terry Collins' team heads right back out on the road to face the Philadelphia Phillies who own the best record in the majors.

Monday's series starter at Citizens Bank Park (4:05 p.m. PT) is a matchup of southpaws with Jonathon Niese toiling for the Mets against the Phillies' Cliff Lee. An all-lefty battle heavily favors the Phillies who are 25-9 facing port-side hurlers this season while the Mets have gone 15-16 in the same situation.

It's the fifth series of the season between the two rivals, and first since right after the all-star break when the clubs met in New York. The Phillies have taken two of three games in each of the four previous series that have been split evenly in the two parks.

Six games at Citizens Bank Park have seen the Phillies outscore the Mets, 29-18. The 'over' is 3-2-1 in Philadelphia, with Lee's lone 2011 start vs. New York one of the two 'unders.'

Lee has strung together four consecutive wins and crafted a 0.75 ERA in three August starts. The only runs he has allowed all month came last Wednesday at home vs. Arizona, a 9-2 Philadelphia win with Lee carrying a hefty -230 price tag in the contest.

The southpaw hooked up with New York's Chris Young on May 1 in Philadelphia as a 185 favorite and tossed seven strong innings. Young and the Mets bullpen were even better, however, with New York eventually taking a 2-1 win in 14 innings.

Lee has been a particularly tough cookie at home with a 2.28 ERA in nearly 103 innings. Philadelphia is 10-4 when he's on the home hill.

The Phillies will be getting their fifth look of 2011 at Niese (13-12, 4.05). He beat them in the two most recent starts, both of those fine efforts at Citi Field, and was beaten twice here at CBP back in April.

Both of the losses came against Roy Halladay. One was a quality outing for Niese who dropped a 2-1 decision when Halladay shut the Mets down. Halladay also shut the Mets down in the other, Philadelphia romping 11-0 and scoring six of those runs in four innings against Niese.

Placido Polanco (sports hernia) is eligible to come off the disabled list for the Phillies on Monday, but they may give him a few extra days before activating their third baseman. Polanco is one Phils hitter that has feasted on Niese in the past with a 1.061 OPS and four doubles among his seven career hits.

New York shortstop Jose Reyes (hamstring) can return on Tuesday, but that appears unlikely after Reyes really just started testing his leg this weekend.

Philly's weather looks fine for Game 1 with clear skies and the mid-70s at the start of the game. A 10 mph northwest breeze (blowing in from left) is in the forecast.

Rangers try to maintain dominance over Boston

BOSTON RED SOX (77-49, +5.1 Units)

at TEXAS RANGERS (73-55, +3.0 Units)

First pitch: Monday, 8:05 p.m. EDT
Line: Texas -130, Boston +120, Total: 9

Boston will travel to Texas to start a four-game series with the Rangers on Monday night in hopes to change its recent failures against the defending AL champs. Texas has won nine of the past 11 meetings with the Sox and is 10-2 at home against Boston since 2009.

Erik Bedard is still looking for his first win in a Red Sox uniform, but has pitched pretty well, with a 3.38 ERA and 17 K in 16 innings. Fellow lefty C.J. Wilson gets the ball for Texas and is 3-0 with a 1.35 ERA in four career starts against Boston. The Sox have the best road record in the majors this year (39-25), but are just 18-34 (.346) against good teams (Win Pct. 54% to 62%) in the second half of a season over the last three years. When the Rangers are a favorite of -125 to -175 this year, they are 35-15, including 8-2 with Wilson on the mound. The pick here is TEXAS to take Monday’s opener.

The FoxSheets provide two more reasons to fade the Red Sox.

BEDARD is 2-13 (13.3%, -13.5 Units) against the money line vs. teams whose hitters strike out 6 or less times/game in the second half of the season since 1997 (Team's Record). The average score was BEDARD 3.9, OPPONENT 6.0 - (Rating = 2*).

BOSTON is 13-24 (35.1%, -23.0 Units) against the money line revenging a loss vs opponent as a road favorite over the last 2 seasons. The average score was BOSTON 4.1, OPPONENT 4.9 - (Rating = 3*).

Boston was swept by Texas back in April as part of an 0-6 start to the season. The Sox have played fantastic baseball since and find themselves ½-game back of the Yankees in the AL East. Bedard (4-8, 3.44 ERA) pitched well Tuesday against the Rays, but suffered an unfortunate 6-2 loss. He threw six innings, giving up three runs (1 ER), with six strikeouts and no walks. Bedard has posted solid numbers in four starts versus the Rangers since 2009, sporting a 2.92 ERA and 0.97 WHIP.

The Rangers started off their just-completed, 10-game road trip winning six in a row including three straight over the second-place Angels. Texas then concluded the trip by losing three of four, scoring a mere three total runs in the three defeats. Wilson (12-5, 3.20 ERA) has pitched very well of late, winning his past two starts and posting a 1.38 ERA with 13 strikeouts in 13 innings. Since 2009, Wilson has a whopping 19-4 record at home.

Monday's betting tips: Red Sox are road warriors

Who’s hot

NFL: The Under is 3-0 in the Bears’ last three preseason games.

MLB: The Tigers are 8-1 in Justin Verlander’s last nine starts against winning teams.

MLB: The Red Sox are 39-18 in their last 57 road games.

Who’s not

NFL: The Giants are 0-3-1 ATS in their last four preseason games.

MLB: The Dodgers are 1-7 in their last eight games against winning teams.

MLB: The Rockies are 1-9 in Jhoulys Chacin's last 10 starts.

Key stat

91st – That’s where nominal Seahawks starter Tarvaris Jackson ranks in passer rating after two preseason games. He has a 45.0 rating while averaging a miniscule 3.4 yards per attempt. Whether coach Pete Carroll sticks with Jackson or goes with Charlie Whitehurst, the defending NFC West champs are major fade material.

Injury not to be overlooked

The Giants put closer Brian Wilson on the 15-day DL Sunday with inflammation and a mild flexor strain in his throwing elbow. Wilson, 29, is 6-4 with a 3.19 ERA and 35 saves in 40 chances. Jeremy Affeldt might get a chance to close in the absence of Wilson, who’s eligible to come off the DL on Aug. 31. Sergio Romo would have gotten the job, but he’s also on the DL with elbow inflammation.

Game of the day

Chicago Bears at New York Giants (-4.5, 35.5)

Notable quotable

"There is no good loss, that's for sure. The good thing is there's a week, eight days to the start of the Open. I'm confident I can recover and be ready for the U.S. Open." – Novak Djokovic after retiring with a sore right shoulder in the second set in Sunday’s final at the Western & Southern Open. The loss ended Djokovic’s 16-match winning streak. The U.S. Open starts next Monday.

Notes and tips

Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins had to leave Sunday’s game against the Nationals after straining his right groin making a play up the middle. He is day to day. Rollins is hitting .269 with 14 homers, 58 RBIs and 28 steals for the first-place Phils.

A middle-of-the-pack defense against the run, New Orleans went out and signed DT Aubrayo Franklin. The 6-1, 317-pounder was an outstanding run-stuffer the past four years with the 49ers. But in Saturday night’s loss to the Texans, Franklin sprained his MCL. Now he has less than three weeks to recover for the Saints’ Sept. 8 opener at Green Bay.

Red Sox DH David Ortiz (right heel) hopes to return at some point during Boston’s four-game series at Texas, which starts Monday. Big Papi took batting practice on Sunday, and Monday he’ll be out of his walking boot and cleared to run. Outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury, who has missed two games with a back contusion, could return Monday night.

Monday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

STREAKING

Zack Greinke (12-4, 3.92 ERA), Milwaukee Brewers

Baseball bettors know there are two profitable situations to back the Brewers: When the club is playing at home (47-16) and whenever staff ace Zack Greinke takes the hill.

Milwaukee is 15-5 on days Greinke toes the rubber and is 5-0 in his last five starts, including last week's 3-1 win over the Dodgers.

"It wasn't a great outing, but I made big pitches when they needed to be made," Greinke told AP reporters after the game.

Carl Pavano (6-9, 4.52 ERA), Minnesota Twins

This isn't a confident salute to Pavano. Mostly, we just didn't feel the need to mention to smart baseball bettors that Justin Verlander is unhittable.

Pavano is very hittable. Opponents are hitting .294 off of him this season and he carries a bloated 1.69 WHIP (walks + hits per inning) since July 26. But he still has allowed just five runs in his last three starts (22 1/3 innings), so you never know. Maybe the mustached man has a late-season charge in him yet.

SLUMPING

Jason Vargas (7-11, 4.37 ERA), Seattle Mariners

This right-handed hurler is enduring a painful summer. Vargas is 1-6 in his last eight starts and owns a 7.39 ERA over his last seven appearances.

He gave up eight runs on seven hits and four walks in his most recent outing, a 13-7 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays.

Jair Jurrjens (12-5, 2.84 ERA), Atlanta Braves

It took a little while but this righty finally hit a bump in the road in an otherwise career-best season.

After floating along with an ERA under 2.25 for much of the campaign, Jurrjens has surrendered four or more runs in four of his last five starts.

The over is also 5-1 in his last six outings and he owns a 6.21 ERA over that span.

Hot lines: Monday's best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Milwaukee Brewers at Pittsburgh Pirates, Game 1 (107, 8.5)

Pardon the pun: we’re going to buck the trend and go with the Bucs against the red-hot Brewers.

We know the Pirates can’t win in Miller Park; that’s been proven over and over. But this game is at PNC Park, and Pittsburgh starter Jeff Karstens has been remarkably consistent.

He’s given up three runs or less in all but one start since April 17. In his only start against the Brewers this season, Karstens allowed two runs over five innings.

Milwaukee starter Chris Narveson (cut thumb) hasn’t pitched since August 6. He’s 2-4 with a 5.11 ERA on the road this season. Pittsburgh center fielder Andrew McCutchen is 5-for-13 (.385) against Narveson.

Pick: Pirates

Atlanta Braves at Chicago Cubs (115, NA)

Jair Jurrjens isn’t himself yet.

In his first start since coming off the DL with a strained right knee, the Braves All-Star gave up five runs on eight hits over six innings against the light-hitting Giants. He only struck out one.

His ERA has risen nearly a full run over the last six weeks. Now Jurrjens faces the Cubs, who had won seven of 10 heading into Sunday night’s game against the Cardinals.

Chicago starter Ryan Dempster has strung together three outstanding starts, allowing five earned runs over 20 innings while fanning 18.

Braves catcher Brian McCann is 0-for-10 with three strikeouts in his career against Dempster.

Pick: Cubs

Monday's six-pack

-- Ubaldo Jimenez' first four starts for Cleveland; 21 IP/21 runs. This isn't what the Indians had in mind when they sent two solid prospects to the Rockies, to try and make the playoffs this season. .

-- Angels locked up Jered Weaver with a 5-year, $85M contract that includes a full no-trade agreement. Good move by the Halos.

-- St Mary's hooked up hoop coach Randy Bennett with a 10-year contract extension over the weekend, reward for a job well done.

-- Sunday was the 55th day this summer the temperature in Dallas was over 100 degrees. But its a dry heat......

-- Colorado ended its 17-game Sunday losing streak when they beat the Dodgers 5-3. Pitching prospect Alex White makes his debut this week.

-- I can't imagine its fun rooting for the Cincinnati Bengals. Not at all.

***********************

Monday's List of 13: Odds and ends from a sports weekend..........

13) Extra Innings package is interesting; get to watch every team, all the time, and you hear interesting things, like Prince Fielder getting criticized for being out of shape. Numbers mean a lot to me, so listen up.......

-- This is Fielder's sixth full season in the major leagues; he's the only guy in the big leagues this year to play every inning of every game.
-- In five full seasons, he has never played less than 157 games.
-- In other words, the more finely-tuned athletes who look great but pull their obliques every month aren't as valuable as a guy who looks a little lumpy but is durable and extremely productive. Understood?
-- He's averaged 38 HRs, 105 RBI, hitting .283 with a .389 OB%.
-- So his body type isn't what we think of as ideal for a pro athlete. Kind of like CC Sabathia, and he's pretty good, too. Deal with it.

Fielder is going to get very rich this winter. Good for him, and good for the team that pays him.

12) Fielder and Ryan Braun have homered in the same game 33 times in the last five seasons, more than any other duo in the major leagues.

11) Rumors have the Nationals interested in paying Fielder this winter. I have a feeling Washington will go after Jose Reyes too, but Reyes is the antithesis of Fielder, an athlete who can't stay healthy.

10) Milwaukee's Nyjer Morgan has walked eight times this season; he's been hit by a pitch nine times. That doesn't happen often.

9) Diamondbacks gave Chris Young Saturday off; he's 6 for his last 54, he has homered once since the 4th of July.

8) Houston Texans are 2-16 against the Colts, with Peyton Manning tossing 42 TDs and eight INTs; if Manning can't go in the opener only 20 days from now, Indy is screwed. Lot of teams will enjoy getting back at the Colts for all the losses they've handed out over the last 10-12 years.

7) NBA TV isn't showing any current players in games they've been airing since the lockout started. Lot of very old games being re-broadcast.

6) Olafur Loftsson is a golfer at NC-Charlotte who missed the cut by a stroke in Greensboro this weekend; kid is from Iceland, and he hopes to be the first Icelandic golfer to play on Tour.

5) Since 2003, Kansas City Chiefs are 3-11 against the spread as a home favorite against AFC West opponents.

4) Tarvaris Jackson didn't fare too well against his old team in Saturday's home loss to the Vikings; he was 11-21 for 75 yards, put no points on the board, except for the pick-6 he threw to a Minnesota defender. Murmurs from the northwest favor Charlie Whitehurst as Seattle's starting QB.

3) So I'm watching TV late Saturday, and I see this football game; turns out it was a high school game from Arizona, with Bishop Gorman from Las Vegas beating Chaparral from Phoenix 42-22. Game was played in the Cardinals' domed stadium. August 20 is early for high school games.

2) Does anyone know if former Titans' coach Jeff Fisher has signed on as a TV analyst for this season, and if not, why not? You mean to tell me all the nitwits ESPN hires, and an ex-coach wouldn't be valuable to them?

1) I'm getting DirecTV installed this week, so hopefully I'll be watching replays of NFL exhibition games while you read this. No more bitching from me about not having the NFL Network. Wish me well on this.
