SNOQUALMIE, Wash. -- Fred Couples has told Tiger Woods that he decided to add him to the 12-member Presidents Cup team.
Couples took the drama out of the debate over whether Woods would be on the team, saying Thursday it's already a done deal.
"I've told him that he's going to be on the team," Couples said just before a practice round preparing for the Boeing Classic at TPC Snoqualmie Ridge. "There is no reason for me to wait till Sept. 26 to pick Tiger. He's the best player in the world forever."
Ten players automatically qualify for the team based on points accumulated over the past two years. Couples is then given two captain's picks to round out his squad, which will compete against a team of non-European International players at Royal Melbourne in Australia on Nov. 14-20.
Woods, who is 28th on the Presidents Cup list, had a long summer layoff because of soreness in his left knee and left Achilles tendon. He played in two recent tournaments, finishing 37th in the Bridgestone Invitational in early August then missing the cut the following week at the PGA Championship.
Woods wrote on his website earlier this week that he had conversations with Couples about playing on the team and that "of course, I want to be on the team" that competes in Australia.
"Is he playing well right now? No. (But) he almost won (The Masters) four months ago so you don't do that by playing poor golf," Couples said. "In my opinion, when you're the best player in the world for 12 straight years and you're not on a team, there's something wrong.
"Everyone else can have their opinion, but as far as I know Jay Haas and myself are the captains and we want him on this team."
Haas is Couples' assistant captain for these matches.
Couples, initially unaware the Woods had not qualified for this week's FedEx Cup, told him by text message to find another tournament to play. Woods' next scheduled appearance is not until the Australian Open, the week before the Cup, although he said he might add a PGA Tour event to his schedule.
"He has responded to that. I'm pretty sure you'll see him one more time," Couples said. "That's enough for me. I know the last thing he wants to do is embarrass himself. I think he'll be ready to play. Does that mean he's going to go out and win every point? No, I don't expect that. But I expect him to be sharp and ready to play. I would be shocked if he's not."
Couples has requested that all his team members play in the Australian Open to sharpen their games before the Presidents Cup. The Australian Open is Nov. 10-13 at The Lakes near Sydney.
One of the players on the edge of the Presidents Cup standings is Bill Haas, son of Jay Haas. He is ranked 10th with a month to go before the Sept. 26 selection date. Jim Furyk and Rickie Fowler are 11th and 12th.
"I don't know how you can criticize someone for choosing Tiger Woods. If he goes there and doesn't play well I would be shocked. I have a pairing for him. He deserves to be on the team," Couples said. "There are guys who are 11, 12, 13 who are having phenomenal years. But you know they're picks. I could take the easy way out and just pick 1 through 12. I don't think if that works either. I think that's the easy way out."

I like Freddie but i think he made a bad choice. This isn't the old Tiger. It's an old Tiger. I don't think he has his game back yet and not real sure he ever will, i do feel strongly however he wiull never be the dominant golfer he once was. They don't cringe anymore when they hear the roar and these young guys are hungry. I don't think the chmistry will be right with the other player's. We know Phil will tank it if he has to play with him. I'm sure Freddied will put him with Steve Stricker or someone super easy to get along with.

Is feel bad for the guy that got bumped too, IF that guy had done 20% of what tiger has done in his career.

Yea, Tiger is playing like shit, but it would take a complete idiot to leave arguably the best golfer that has ever lived off any team......the guys that know golf (couples, jack etc) all know its just a matter of time before he starts playing well again. And when Tiger is playing well, nobody matches him. I'm not even sure why this topic is news, it should be common sense.

Yep, I like how he went ahead and just said the blatantly obvious fact that tiger will be on the team, and didn't wait till the deadline to announce, which would have caused a lot of drama. Freddie and especially Tiger don't need anymore drama, or built up stories by the tv networks filling garbage into the clueless ones minds

Got a feeling someone at the PGA or the network pressured Couples into putting Tiger on the team.... it will improve their tv rating.

Got a feeling your def wrong. Freddie isn't an idiot. I think he knows golf a little bit more than you.....and I doubt the tv networks had to pressure him to pick, his friend, a 14 time major champ, a winner of 90+ pro tourn etc......u think Freddie felt pressure from tv networks to pick tiger? Lol

I have a feeling that there was some pressure applied, but I've got to think that he'll be paired with Stricker again. Those two are pretty good friends, and they've dominated when they've been paired up. At least I know the hometown guy will get a lot of coverage this year.

The choice is only as good as how Tiger performs. If he plays bad and loses every match, then the pick doesn't look very smart.

I can agree with that.......considering the options Couples has, there is no Freaking way he leaves Tiger off the team. Tiger has played the best golf that's ever been played by anyone in a 12 year span. how the hell does anybody with a brain leave that talent off a team.

It's a lose-lose for Freddie....if tiger plays well, nobody will give him credit for picking Tiger, including me because its common sense to me. If he doesn't play well, well the same ppl that bash will bash

This event is obviously not that important ! Kinda like a bowl game in Shreveport or something. This isn't a career achievement selection, its about winning a event. Hell, If its a career achievement, lets bring in Nicklaus or Watson to play....

Freddie and Tiger are good friends. Freddie has always been loyal to his golf buddies. Even with Woods in horrifc form, a shadow of his former self , Freddie could not say no.

Hopefully Tiger can find a swing he trusts in time for the event--hate to see him embarrass himself as he did at The PGA.

And I agree, stick him with Stricker!!

appreciate it bro ! All kidding aside, I don't have a problem with Tiger playing, probably give me a reason to watch actually if the Packers or Oregon aren't playing. Pair him with Phil is what i want to see, think it would be good for both players. I'm not sure the same decision would be made if its the Ryder Cup though........

Yea, I never thought about pairing those two together. That could do them both some good at the moment.
