I know it is very similar to the US with the major difference being no paper bill under $5, and you have the "Twonie". The Loonie is the same as our dead-POTUS coin ( metallurgically), that nobody uses

Is the biggest bill only $100, looks that way to me !

Was there ever a $500 or $1,000 or larger bill ?

Canada seems to be getting nearly as Commie as the US, these days. :ohno:

The Bank of Canada will no longer issue $1,000 bills as of this Friday in an effort to fight organized crime and money laundering. The bill's extinction was made official Monday after formal approval from the federal government. It was the final step in a February proposal by the the Finance Department, the central bank and the RCMP to get rid of the bills which are favoured by criminals.
Nicknamed "pinkies" for their reddish-purple hue, $1000 bills were an easy way for criminals to hide and carry their earnings.
The next largest denomination is now $100, which will make stacks of cash heavier and bulkier.
The central bank says the $1000 bill is still legal tender but no new ones will be printed. It stressed individuals can hold onto their $1000 bills as long as they want. But commercial banks have been asked to return any $1000 bills customers deposit or exchange. The notes will be eventually taken out of circulation and destroyed by the central bank.
The bills have a portrait of the Queen on the front and a pair of pine grosbeaks on the back. They've been in circulation since 1935. The Bank of Canada estimates a $1000 bill has a lifespan of 13 years.
The central bank says the bill's withdrawal will have little impact since it makes up only 0.3 per cent of the Canadian currency in circulation.

The casinos miss the 1000 for sure as i have seen many many 1000's pulled out at the Montreal casino.

Thanks for that Newton0038 : The US eliminated these larger bills in the late 60's.

Inflation has made the $100 bill really small in 40 years since. A hundred dollar bill in 1971 was something, now it is like 20% of that, or little more than a tank of gas.

back in the day the Hull Casino used to hand out $1000 bills, but yeah, they were killed a while ago.

OK.SS:

Does Canada follow the US in coins and bills or does the US follow Canada ?

I'd. say Canada has historically followed US, but has been more proactive changing stuff in the last 50 years.

I don't know Canadian monetary history as well as I'd like to. I do believe the USA copied the Loonie in 2000 for our "Golden" dollar....they just forget to kill the $1 bill along the way....

I should be the last guy to have to ask when the Loonie came into use, I can Google that.

I'd prefer to hear how real Canadians adapted to the changeover. guys like SS are sure welcome to tell me how it changed, or any Canadian or person with info.

I know the Loonie replaced the $1 bill, I think there was a $2 bill also, ...then you Canucks made a $2 coin ( Twonie) later on.

Now you are making Polymer bills or some plastic shit that will last 10X longer.

Canada has the lead here.

I have CDN $1 bills, but they are seldom seen in circulation anymore & i suppose
they are no longer being printed even as special edition collectables. What about
the USA?

Not sure. I have 500 dollar TCs in both currencies obtained at a CDN bank earlier this year.

I suppose so though we still have legalized online gambling, more or less legal prostitution, and pot possession for personal use is a slap on the hand. I guess taxes are higher for Canucks but then we have basicly free medicare.

Well X, I'll answer the easy one first. We use paper $1 bills not Loonie like coins down here, our dumb gov't can't see that they offer a choice, the paper is preferred. I'll give an analogy....You go to a public restroom, there happens to be soap in the dispenser, so you wash your hands,,,,know there is some green hand dryer contraption that takes 60 seconds to green dry your hands, or there are actual paper towels out of a contraption where you wave your hands 13 times to get a towel....I just wipe my hands on my T-Shirt, usually, these days !
