Hold off on the autopsy: The White Sox aren’t dead yet.
They just gained two games in two days on first-place Detroit in the AL Central, moving with five games. They’ve won four in a row with strong pitching heading into Tuesday night’s start by rookie Zach Stewart, and it’s time to point out how they have a chance to put some real heat on the Tigers, who have a dubious September history under manager Jim Leyland.
Since Leyland arrived in 2006, his teams have gone 497-447. But while winning at a .535 pace through August (428-372), his Tigers have played .479 baseball (69-75) in September.
Let’s say they win at that pace over the 26 games they’re scheduled to play this September. That’s a 12-14 finish. The White Sox could make up a five-game difference by going 18-10.
This an unlikely scenario, but hardly impossible, especially given the depth of a White Sox rotation that is getting excellent work from Mark Buehrle, Gavin Floyd and John Danks.
