Red Sox, Yankees Finish MLB Betting Series

The Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees have their third straight pitching mismatch, at least on paper, as they finish their 3-game set on Thursday night.

First pitch from venerable Fenway Park will be at 7:10 p.m. (ET). The Don Best odds screen will release the figures shortly.

Boston (82-52) and New York (81-52) are fighting for the AL East title, with the loser almost definitely getting the wild card. The Red Sox have a half-game lead, with the winner likely facing Detroit in the opening round instead of Texas, a favorable scenario.

The Yanks won 5-2 as 136 road betting favorites in Tuesday’s opener behind ace CC Sabathia. He allowed 10 hits, but just the two runs over six innings. He got the win after going 0-4 in his first four Boston starts this year.

New York is still just 3-10 against Boston this season, 3-4 at Fenway. The Bronx Bombers have strangely lost all six home meetings.

The Wednesday night game is still pending and had Josh Beckett going against Phil Hughes. Beckett was sporting a 1.95 home ERA heading in, with his team 9-2 in his Fenway starts. Boston was a 160 favorite with a total of nine runs.

Boston’s co-ace Jon Lester (14-6, 3.09 ERA) is pitching on Thursday. He’s 3-0 in his last three starts, allowing exactly one run each time and pitching 19 total innings (1.42 ERA). Two of them were at home against Oakland and Tampa Bay.

The 27-year-old left-hander has a higher ERA (3.44) at home than away (2.84). However, that’s mostly due to a couple of bad starts in May. The ‘under’ is 5-1 in Lester’s last six home starts (2.23 ERA).

Lester is 2-1 with a 5.00 ERA in three starts against New York this year. The one at home was August 5, allowing three earned runs over six innings in a 3-2 loss. Boston had won his prior five Yankees starts.

New York is 28-13 against a lefty starter this year and 13-5 in its last 18 road games versus a southpaw.

A.J. Burnett (9-11, 5.31 ERA) will pitch for the visitors, much to the dismay of Yanks fans. His ERA has ballooned his last two starts at Minnesota and Baltimore, 16 earned runs over a combined 6 2/3 innings. He had an 11.91 ERA in five August outings overall.

The 34-year-old right-hander is trying to avoid being left off the playoff roster. Going to Fenway where he has a 10.61 ERA in six starts since joining New York likely won’t help matters.

His one start against Boston this year was at home, seven earned runs over 5 2/3 innings in June (11-6 loss).

Burnett has a 6.85 road ERA this year. The ‘over’ is 5-0-1 in his last six road starts. New York is 1-9 in his last 10 road starts against a team with a winning record.

Boston is just 9-9 at home in its last 18 games. The ‘under’ is 6-2 in its last eight at home, scoring just 3.5 runs per game.

New York has won three straight games (all away) and is 13-6 in its last 19 road games.

Boston is still missing slugger Kevin Youkilis (back injury), who could return Friday. New York’s Alex Rodriguez (thumb) was out Tuesday and likely the series. Catcher Russell Martin (toe) was questionable for Wednesday.

Alfonso Marquez will call balls and strikes. Neither team has fared well recently with him behind home plate. Boston is 2-6 in the last eight and New York 1-6 in the last seven.

Weather should be clear and in the 60s. Boston will start another big home series Friday against Texas. New York will return home against Toronto.

Yovani Gallardo And Brewers Battle St. Louis Cardinals

Rookie Brandon Dickson will be asked to carry out a near-impossible task Thursday afternoon when the St. Louis Cardinals close out a 3-game set at the Milwaukee Brewers.

Along with the usual butterflies Dickson will have as he makes his first career start in the big leagues, the right-hander will be facing one of the most prolific lineups in the National League and trying to best a team that is the toughest to beat on its own diamond. He will also be taking on Milwaukee's Yovani Gallardo who has pitched the Brew Crew to an 11-2 mark in his 13 home starts.

And, oh yeah, he'll be asked to do this for a Cardinals team that is desperate to close ground fast on the NL Central-leading Brewers.

It all gets underway at 4:10 p.m. (ET) at Miller Park, where the roof should be open on a sunny afternoon.

St. Louis fired the first salvo in this set Tuesday night with a 2-1 win behind Edwin Jackson who was +120 on the baseball betting board. Milwaukee was a favorite in the 135-145 range for Wednesday's game which was still pending.

Ron Roenicke's crew entered that contest 50-17 at Bernie Brewers' house and had not lost consecutive games at home since July 4-5 vs. the Arizona Diamondbacks. In fact, that remains the only time Milwaukee has dropped two straight at home all season.

Tuesday's loss left the Brewers 8-5 vs. the Cardinals this campaign; the two squads will meet once more for three games at the beginning of next week in St. Louis.

Gallardo (17-11, 3.37) only has one loss at Miller Park on his personal ledger this year with the Brewers a perfect 5-0 since that June 9 contest vs. the New York Mets. He's exiting a successful month of August with Milwaukee winning four of his five starts and the right-hander posting a 2.06 ERA.

The one August defeat came against the Cards at Busch Stadium about three weeks ago. Gallardo allowed all of St. Louis' runs in the 5-2 defeat that closed with the Redbirds -130.

He snuffed the Cardinals earlier this season in St. Louis, working eight, 1-hit innings in a 4-0 win as a 115 underdog.

Dickson (0-0, 0.00) does have a couple of relief outings under his belt, and even picked up a hit in his one and only major league at bat so far. So he won't have first-game jitters to deal with. Still, he'll feel the pressure of his first MLB start, especially given the circumstances.

He's being called on the Sept. 1 roster expansion rule. St. Louis skipper Tony La Russa is trying to get some extra rest for his rotation as the team enters the last-month push.

Nicknamed 'Cotton,' the Alabama native has spent the last two seasons with the Cardinals' Triple-A club in Memphis. He was 8-9 in 25 starts at the time of his call-up, his most impressive stat being a 124:32 strikeout-to-walk ratio in just over 157 innings.

Now working his 15th MLB season, Jeff Nelson should be calling the balls and strikes for this tilt. His games have gone 'over' 17 of his previous 29 plate assignments, and four of his last five appearances behind the mask. It's worth noting that home favorites are just 17-21 when Nelson has the plate the past two seasons.

The Brewers will head out after this matchup for a 6-game roadie that starts this weekend in Houston before reaching St. Louis next week. The Cardinals go home to open a 9-game homestand beginning with the Reds and followed by visits from the Brewers and Braves.

Marlins and Mets finish off 5-game series Thursday

FLORIDA MARLINS (60-75, -14.2 Units)

at NEW YORK METS (65-69, +2.2 Units)

First pitch: Thursday, 7:10 p.m. EDT
Line: New York -115, Florida +105, Total: 8.5

It may be too little too late for a pennant push, but the New York Mets have won five of six as they wrap up a rare five-game series with the Marlins on Thursday night.

Clay Hensley (2-5, 5.40 ERA) gets the ball for Florida looking to stymie the Mets bats again. New York is just 7-for-43 (.163) off Hensley this year, scoring just twice in 12 innings. Making his Mets debut is 40-year-old Miguel Batista (3-2, 4.60 ERA), who will throw for his 11th different major-league team. He has been good against the Marlins in his long career, posting a 3.12 ERA in 69.1 innings. Despite a dreadful 25-41 home record, the Marlins are solid 35-34 (+8.2 Units) on the road this year. The Mets are also better away from Citifield, where they are a subpar 29-36 (-11.2 Units). Despite New York’s recent quality play, expect FLORIDA, who is 31-19 (+9.5 Units) in the past three seasons versus New York, to win on the road on Thursday night.

The FoxSheets provide a pair of three-star trends siding with the Marlins.

FLORIDA is 15-2 (88.2%, +13.9 Units) against the money line after 4 or more consecutive unders over the last 2 seasons. The average score was FLORIDA 5.6, OPPONENT 2.9 - (Rating = 3*).

Play On - All underdogs with a money line of +100 to +150 (FLORIDA) - on a good fielding streak, 10 straight games with one or less errors, with a cold starting pitcher- ERA >= 7.00 over his last 5 starts. (84-64 over the last 5 seasons.) (56.8%, +42.9 units. Rating = 3*).

Hensley (2-3, 6.08 ERA in eight starts) got his first start of 2011 in New York on July 18 and threw five scoreless innings, allowing only one hit in a 4-1 victory. Hensley got his second win of the season last Friday, holding the mighty Phillies to three runs and three hits in 5.2 innings of a 6-5 victory. Florida 2B Omar Infante is sad to see August end after batting .382 and slugging .618 for the month. He is currently riding a 10-game hitting streak and has raked at Citifield, batting .420 with three homers in 88 career at-bats in the Mets’ young stadium.

Although Batista has pitched well versus Florida, he hasn’t started against the Marlins since 2003. Batista has actually made only two starts in the past three seasons, which includes facing one batter on April 22 before a lengthy rain delay. He threw five shutout innings in his lone 2010 start when he was with Washington. David Wright has hit the Marlins well this year, recording three straight multi-hit games against them while batting .340 overall with 11 RBI in 12 meetings.

Boston favored big in rubber match vs. Yanks

NEW YORK YANKEES (81-53, +7.8 Units)

at BOSTON RED SOX (83-52, +8.3 Units)

First pitch: Thursday, 7:10 p.m. EDT
Line: Boston -200, New York +185, Total: 9.5

The Yankees will be in the unusual position of heavy underdog when they wrap up a three-game series against the Red Sox in Boston Thursday night.

Much-maligned right-hander A.J. Burnett will take the hill for New York, and he’s been at his absolute worst of late (11.91 ERA over five August starts). Not to mention, the Yankees are just 1-5 in Fenway Park with Burnett on the hill, mostly due to Burnett’s 10.61 ERA in these six starts. With red-hot Jon Lester opposing him for Boston, the money line isn’t steep enough to even consider New York. And the FoxSheets have a rare five-star trend that confirms BOSTON is the pick:

Play Against - All underdogs with a money line of +150 or more (N.Y. YANKEES) - average hitting team (AVG = .265 to .279) against a good starting pitcher (ERA <=4.20) -AL, with an on-base percentage of .350 or better over their last 20 games. (53-6 over the last 5 seasons.) (89.8%, +42.4 units. Rating = 5*).

With Burnett (9-11, 5.31 ERA) on the mound, the Yankees are set to leave Boston with a whimper. His last two starts were especially ugly, and they came against two of the American League’s bottom feeders. On August 20, Burnett gave up seven runs while getting just five outs in Minnesota. And in Baltimore last Friday, he allowed nine runs over five innings. That increased his road ERA to 6.85 this season.

As much of a disappointment as Burnett has been overall during his Yankees career, he’s been especially bad against the rival Red Sox. In eight starts against Boston since joining the Yankees, he’s 0-4 with an 8.71 ERA and 1.89 WHIP. The Boston bats have absolutely hammered him over the years, especially DH David Ortiz (.985 OPS in 43 plate appearances), 2B Dustin Pedroia (.980 OPS in 43 PA) and CF Jacoby Ellsbury (.884 OPS in 30 PA).

Lester (14-6, 3.09 ERA) has been especially sharp in his past three starts, going 3-0 while allowing just four runs (three earned) in 19 innings. The lefty has been a bit shakier at home this year though, where he’s just 5-4 with a 3.44 ERA and 1.31 WHIP. The Yankees beat him in Fenway on August 5, as Lester allowed three runs and nine base runners over six innings in a loss. That outing broke up his five-game winning streak against New York. Lester is 8-2 with a 3.62 ERA in 15 career starts against the rival Yanks.

Thursday’s betting tips: Favored Badgers riding over trend

Who’s hot

NCAAF: Syracuse is on a 7-2 run against the spread in its September games.

NCAAF: The over is 20-7 in Wisconsin’s last 27 games as a favorite.

NFL: The Detroit Lions are the talk of the preseason heading into Thursday’s matchup at 3-0 straight up, but while the club’s defense is getting all the attention, the offense leads the league with 98 points through three games.

MLB: Philadelphia is 20-7 in its last 27 road games.

Who’s not

NCAAF: Memphis is 2-5-1 against the spread in its last eight overall.

NCAAF: The under is 3-9 in Kentucky’s last 12 overall.

NFL: The Kansas City Chiefs have scored a league-low 23 points while going winless through three preseason games to date.

MLB: Florida is 5-17 in its last 22 as an underdog.

Key stat

28 – Wisconsin has won 28 consecutive non-league games straight up heading into Thursday’s meeting with UNLV. The Badgers are set as big 35-point favorites at home to the Runnin’ Rebels.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Cody Ross, San Francisco Giants: X-rays on Ross’ hand came back negative after he was hit by a pitch Wednesday and the team is hopeful he will be able to play on Friday when the Giants resume play against the rival Diamondbacks.

Game of the day

UNLV at Wisconsin (-35, 56)

Notable quotable

"I'm very excited to be getting out there again. Playing against a team like Mississippi State and them being ranked is huge for us. Plus being on national television gives us a chance to show everyone what we're capable of and what we can do." Memphis senior defensive end Frank Trotter on his club’s opener Thursday against Mississippi State. The Tigers are set as big 30.5-point home underdogs.

Notes and tips

The Texas Rangers will activate third baseman Adrian Beltre from the 15-day disabled list Thursday. Beltre has been sidelined with a hamstring injury on July 22. He had a setback earlier this month when he aggravated the injury. In his first season with the Rangers, Beltre is batting .276 with 20 home runs and 76 RBIs in 100 games.

UNLV defensive backs Michael Johnson and Corbin Brown are currently set as questionable for Thursday’s game against Wisconsin. Last season the Runnin’ Rebels allowed 227.8 passing yards per game, good for 77th in the nation. Wisconsin, meanwhile, with Jon Budmayr out with his elbow injury, North Carolina State transfer Russell Wilson will take the snaps.

According to an ESPN report, Houston Texans running back Arian Foster could be out three or four weeks with his hamstring injury. Foster tweeted a shot of his MRI and ESPN medical analyst Michael Kaplan claims Foster tore “some of the muscle fibers, we'll call it Grade 1 to 2. There's a fair amount of swelling and bleeding on the MRI, so this is real. ... It's gonna be a couple weeks at least. If you get him back too soon, he's at a high risk of re-rupture. I think they're gonna go a little slow with him." Houston is a 3.5-point underdog at Minnesota on Thursday.

Thursday's six-pack

-- Cubs swung 66 times against Madison Bumgarner Wednesday but got only two hits on the 13 balls they put in play. Wow.

-- Then there is Toronto, which put 14 balls in play against their former teammate JoJo Reyes, and got 8 hits in a 13-0 waxing of the Orioles.

-- Brett Gardner is 6 for his last 54.

-- A's played their 19th extra-inning game of year Wednesday, losing in 16 innings at Cleveland. Oakland is 8-11 in extra frames this season.

-- Hard to lose a game where your pitchers retire 24 batters in a row, but those are the 2011 A's. Pathetic offensive team in the clutch.

-- Game ended on close play at plate, which ump got wrong. Hurts me to say this, but we need instant replay in baseball, and soon.

**********************

Thursday's List of 13: Things I'm looking for in September

13) Did the short NFL offseason affect the quality of play? Will there be more/less injuries than usual, and will this unique summer get credit/blame for that result?

12) When will Peyton Manning be ready to play, and when will he play well? The Kerry Collins signing was a red flag that it might be a while before #18 is ready to go full throttle.

11) Labor Day weekend: Boise State-Georgia and LSU-Oregon are the two most anticipated games. College football is excellent. Glad its back.

10) How much time will I save now that I’ll be home with DirecTV every Sunday and can do research while I watch NFL games?

By the way, if you live in the Albany area and like the NFL, going to Graney's on New Scotland Ave is the best place to watch games out on Sundays. A ton of TVs, good food and a lot of friendly people.

9) Will there be any exciting pennant races? Right now, the only two decent races are both out west. Arizona Diamondbacks could wind up being 2011’s best baseball story.

8) This is really for October, but how will Eldrick Woods fare when lowers himself to play out in Las Vegas? Fred Couples said he should play in a tournament before heading to Australia, and since he’s captain of the President’s Cup team, that was enough to get Woods out on the course, so we’ll see what he does there. (PS—Wonder who got left off the team so they could give Eldrick a free pass?)

7) Wouldn’t mind seeing an NHL exhibition game in September; will definitely take in a minor league game or three in October.

6) Texas Longhorns were 5-7 LY; if they struggle again this year, will Mack Brown lose his job? Its hard to believe that could be true, but these college boosters ain’t patient folks.

5) Mother Nature has been very ornery this summer; will she calm down as the leaves change colors? We’ve had enough destruction for one year.

4) How will Utah-Colorado-Nebraska-Boise State do in new leagues? This is all going to take some getting used to. So will the idea of BYU as an independent. Although the Big X might want BYU........

3) If Texas A&M bolts the Big X for the SEC, who replaces them? Arkansas? Notre Dame? BYU? SMU? Cadwallader?

2) Can Jose Reyes do enough in last month of the season to get himself a $100M contract this winter? His injury history sticks out like a sore thumb. Who else beside the Mets is going to try and sign him?

1) Lions/Buccaneers are both getting touted as the fashionable Cinderella teams in the NFL; can either or both live up to the hype?

Thursday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streakers

Yovani Gallardo, Milwaukee Brewers (15-8, 3.37 ERA)

The Brewers have won each of Gallardo’s last three starts as he’s allowed only three earned runs over that stretch while striking out 25. He struck out 10 and didn’t give up an earned run in a 6-4 win over the Cubs in his last outing and he’s 9-1 with a 2.45 ERA at Miller Park this season.

Jon Lester, Boston Red Sox (14-6, 3.09 ERA)

Lester has been lights out over his last three starts, compiling a 1.42 ERA while giving up only nine hits and booking three wins.

“The two before this one had a few too many walks,’’ Lester told reporters after holding the A’s to one earned run while walking two in a 9-3 win. “I think if I can minimize those, like today, it was pretty good and I was able to attack the zone and stay pretty consistent with it.”

Slumping

Danny Duffy, Kansas City Royals (3-8, 5.55 ERA)

The Royals have dropped each of Duffy’s last five starts, including a 8-7 loss to Cleveland last week in which he gave up four runs on six hits while striking out seven and walking two. Even though he has pitched seven innings only his last six outings, Kansas City plans to shut him down after two or three more starts to preserve his arm for next season.

A.J. Burnett, New York Yankees (9-11, 5.31 ERA)

If Burnett bombs again on Thursday against the Red Sox, he could be on his way to the bullpen. He has allowed 16 runs over his last 6 2/3 innings on the mound and has served up 25 home runs already. Basically, if the Yanks hadn’t had so many doubleheaders recently, he probably won’t still be starting.
"We'll deal with it when we're in a position to deal with it," Yankees GM Cashman told reporters of the situation. "When we have to make a decision, we'll have to make a decision. Obviously, he's not pitching well."

Hot lines: Thursday's best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kansas City Royals at Detroit Tigers (-160, 9.5)

When you’ve been around as long as Tigers manager Jim Leyland, you know a thing or two about taking a team down the stretch in the regular season.

His Tigers pulled out another win Thursday afternoon by putting three runs on the board in the eighth inning in a 5-4 win over Kansas City. Wilson Betemit, the former Royal, delivered the big blow with an RBI double in the eighth.

"People wonder why I play so many different lineups, but that's what you have to do when you want to win a division," Leyland told reporters. "You don't win unless you get contributions from everyone, and you have to play them so that they are ready to make a play when you need them."

The win, combined with another White Sox loss, moved the Tigers to six games in front in the AL Central division. They could build on that against Danny Duffy and the Royals.

Pick: Tigers

Washington Nationals at Atlanta Braves (-225, 7.5)

The Washington Nationals might not be all that far away from a really exciting team.

They have a bunch of young studs getting ready to break into the bigs and management is finally making some solid moves to bring in some veterans. Picking up Chien-Ming Wang may not be the worst decision either.

Wang is 2-2 with a 3.82 ERA in six starts for the Nats after missing about two years with a shoulder injury. He isn’t overpowering anyone with only nine strikeouts compared to 10 walks, but that never was his game anyway.

"I felt today that the sinker had good movement. I kept it down," Wang told reporters after allowing one earned run over six innings in a no-decision against Cincinnati. "Location is good. I can throw the ball more easily. The shoulder feels better. The biggest problem is the release point. I think I can get a good release point."

We didn’t think he had a chance to get back to where he was before, but we like what we’re seeing. At this price, we'll take a flier on the Nats.

Pick: Nationals
