Former OU/ Tampa Bay great Leroy Selmon died a couple hours ago from complications from a stroke. Barry Switzer called him the greatest player he ever coached. He was also the first player taken in the 1976 NFL draft, and was the first all Pro from Tampa Bay. Leroy was a class act. Very sad news.

Sad News in Tampa: Reports: Lee Roy Selmon dead at*56

Reports: Lee Roy Selmon dead at*56

Posted by Michael David Smith on September 2, 2011, 7:36 PM EDT

Lee Roy Selmon, a Pro Football Hall of Famer who played defensive end for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 1976 to 1984, has died, according to multiple reports. He was 56.

“It is with the deepest and most profound sorrow that we learned our dear friend Lee Roy Selmon’s passing this afternoon,” said a statement from his restaurant that was sent to the Fox affiliate in Tampa. “Lee Roy Selmon was a man of honor, integrity, strength and family values. He was our dear friend and business partner for many years.”

Selmon was rushed to the hospital after suffering a stroke today.

After a brilliant career at Oklahoma, the Buccaneers made Selmon the first overall pick — and first pick in franchise history — in the 1976 NFL draft. Selmon was the best player in the early years of the Buccaneers franchise, when they went from NFL bottom dwellers to NFC Central champions. Selmon was named to the Pro Bowl in each of his last six NFL seasons before retiring at the age of 30 because of a back injury.

Fun Fact.....Back in about 2005, Fishhead pledged to meet me for a drink at the North Tampa Selmons, but (shockingly) no showed me after a 25 mile drive by yours truly.

Had this historic meet occurred, it would have doubled the number of times I actually was in same place as FHead during his last seven years in Florida

He's Not Quite Dead Yet

Updated: September 2, 2011, 8:35 PM ET

TAMPA, Fla. -- Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive end Lee Roy Selmon has been hospitalized.

The University of South Florida, where 56-year-old Selmon once served as athletic director, confirmed the Hall of Famer's hospitalization Friday.

Selmon was drafted by the Buccaneers in 1976. He went to six straight Pro Bowls and was the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 1979.

He left the team after the 1984 season because of a back injury.
Selmon played college ball at Oklahoma, winning the Lombardi Award and the Outland Trophy in 1975.

Former Tampa Bay Buccaneer great Lee Roy Selmon in 'extremely critical condition'

Posted: Sep 02, 2011 06:12 PM

Former Tampa Bay Buccaneer and NFL Hall of Famer Lee Roy Selmon reportedly suffered a stroke Friday afternoon and is in "extremely critical condition,'' according to USF spokesman Michael Hoad.

Earlier in the evening, there were conflicting reports about Selmon's condition.

Selmon's restaurant first issued a statement saying Selmon had died, but Selmon's brother, Dewey, told Ch. 10 he is alive and in serious condition. A publicist for the restaurant later tweeted that the statement was issued prematurely.
Dewey Selmon told Ch. 10 his brother, 56, is "showing signs of progress" after suffering a stroke at his home in Tampa.

Publicist Jim Galiano, who earlier confirmed Selmon's death and e-mailed the restaurant's news release, subsequently tweeted, "Reports now unclear about whether or not Lee Roy Selmon is alive or not.''

A followup tweet read, "It appears that the original statement about Lee Roy Selmon's passing was prematurely released.''

Judi Gallagher of Judi Gallagher & Associates, later apologized for the release in a statement: "Representatives of Lee Roy Selmon's Restaurants apologize for an earlier release. We were misinformed and deeply regret the previous statement attributed to the company.
"Our prayers are with Lee Roy Selmon and his family.''

Earlier, Ch. 10 reported it spoke with Selmon's nephew, Zac, who said he and his father, Dewey, are traveling to Tampa because Selmon suffered a stroke.

The Selmon Brothers sell a pretty tasty bottle of BBQ sauce too. It's very popular around these parts.

glad to see there was an error in reporting, and from what i just read, he is showing some slight improvement today...hopefully the reports of his demise are greatly exaggerated, and he might make a recovery.....certainly hope so for him and his family....he was a great player for the Bucs

TAMPA - The line of mourners attending today's viewing for Lee Roy Selmon has grown to about 60 people before the doors even open.

Amid the suits and ties and professional clothes, at least one couple has come in Tampa Bay Buccaneer colors. Not the red and pewter of today, but the creamsicle orange that Selmon wore back in his playing days.

A framed "63" jersey sits behind the casket. There is a large black-and-white photo of Selmon fighting off a Chicago Bear player and another of him and his brothers on their Oklahoma farm.

There also is a large photo of Selmon holding his bronze bust when he was inducted into the Hall of Fame.

His body lies in an open casket as dozens file by to honor him.

"In God's care," reads an inscription on the fabric of the casket lid.

Hundreds of mourners are expected at the viewing for Selmon at Exciting Central Tampa Baptist Church, 2923 N. Tampa St.

The viewing will last until 8 p.m., with the Selmon family in attendance from 5 to 7 p.m.

The church is just north of downtown at North Tampa Street and Floribraska Avenue in Tampa Heights.

It is the first of a series of memorials planned for the former Buccaneers star and athletic director at the University of South Florida.

Selmon, a Pro Football Hall of Famer, died at St. Joseph's Hospital on Sunday, two days after suffering a stroke. He was 56.

A funeral is set for 10 a.m. Friday at the Idlewild Baptist Church, 18371 N. Dale Mabry Highway in Lutz. The Rev. Jeffery Singletary will officiate, and the entire Buccaneers and USF football teams are scheduled to attend.

Another ceremony is planned for Saturday in Oklahoma City. Selmon was born and grew up in nearby Eufaula, Okla.

USF will offer its own tribute to Selmon before the Bulls' first home game at Raymond James Stadium on Saturday. Kickoff against Ball State University is scheduled for 7 p.m. The Bulls will wear decals with No. 63 on their helmets; that was Selmon's jersey number with the Bucs.

Selmon was instrumental in starting the USF football program.

On Sunday, the Bucs will host a tribute to Selmon before the 1 p.m. season opener against the Detroit Lions at Raymond James Stadium.
