White Sox, Tigers Continue Series In Detroit

The first place Detroit Tigers continue their weekend series against the Chicago White Sox on Saturday when the American League Central rivals meet at Comerica Park. FOX will air the game with the first pitch expected at 4:10 p.m. (ET).

Detroit held a 5.5-game lead over the White Sox and Cleveland Indians entering the series opener on Friday. The Tigers were laying -210 and up in the matchup that saw their ace Justin Verlander (20-5, 2.38) take on Chicago lefty John Danks (6-9, 3.63).

Saturday finds the Tigers sending out right-handed starter Brad Penny (9-10, 5.07), who is allowing over four earned runs per start in his last nine games. Starting for Chicago will be right-hander Gavin Floyd (12-10, 4.36), who has picked up a victory in six of his last eight starts.

The Tigers have held the division lead since July 21. The White Sox and Tigers have already met 12 times this season with Detroit leading the season series 7-5 and with six games remaining on the schedule between these teams, including this weekend set.

Detroit has accumulated a reputable home record this season of 39-29 and has been profitable betting option there this season at +5.87 units. But the Tigers have failed to put up that type of performance lately at Comerica Park, going just 13-14 at home in their last 27.

The distinct advantage Floyd seems to have over Penny in this matchup comes down to two simple pitching statistics that show consistency and effectiveness: WHIP and ERA. Floyd’s WHIP is over 0.3 points lower than Penny’s this season and his ERA is over nearly three-quarters of a run below Penny’s mark of 5.07.

These two statistics prove exactly why some trends matter more than others when it comes to picking divisional baseball games.

The White Sox seem to demonstrate exactly how much they continue to struggle on the road against the Tigers with a 2-7 mark in their last nine meetings in Detroit. But Floyd has had success pitching versus the Tigers during his career with the White Sox winning 10 of his 14 starts versus Detroit since he joined the Chicago rotation in 2007.

Detroit has been listed a favorite in their last 10 home games with the odds ranging from -110 to -270. With nearly a 6-game lead in the division over Chicago, expect that streak to continue in this three-game series against the White Sox.

The weather forecast shows a 40 percent chance of scattered thunderstorms in the Motown area for Saturday. The afternoon high is going to approach 90 with southwest winds in the 5-10 mph range.

St. Louis Cardinals Host Cincinnati Reds

The St. Louis Cardinals hope to keep their improbable push for the playoffs alive this Saturday when they host the Cincinnati Reds in the second game of a three-game weekend series.

Homer Bailey and Jaime Garcia take the hill for Saturday’s contest, which will be played at Busch Stadium at 4:10 p.m. (ET).

The season appeared lost for St. Louis when the Cardinals found themselves 10.5 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central. But after sweeping a three-game series against the Brewers earlier this week, St. Louis narrowed the gap to 7.5 games and will try to keep climbing out of the hole this weekend.

St. Louis (73-64) has won four straight (+5.10 units) and six of the last seven (+4.75 units) in back-to-back series wins over Pittsburgh and Milwaukee. The Cardinals offense has come alive, resulting in the total going ‘over’ in seven of their last nine games.

Garcia (10-7, 3.73) returns from an eight-day break during which he worked on getting his game back on track. August was a terrible month for Garcia, who was 0-2 with a 6.84 ERA in five starts last month. St. Louis has lost his last three trips to the mound (-4.70 units).

Pitching against Cincinnati could help Garcia’s psyche, as he is 5-1 in six career starts against the Reds with a 3.38 ERA. Garcia gave up just one earned run in each of his two meetings against the Reds this season, both coming in July.

It’s been a disappointing year for the Cincinnati Reds (67-70) who won’t return to the playoffs after last year’s impressive run. The Reds entered this series against St. Louis with a four-game losing streak (-4.00 units) after being swept at home by the Philadelphia Phillies. It was the Phils first 4-game sweep in Cincinnati in over 95 years.

Bailey (7-6, 4.35 ERA) has been decent of late, giving up three runs or less in seven of his last nine starts. The Reds have broken about even from a betting perspective at 5-4 (+0.10 units) over that stretch.

Bailey has not fared well over the course of his career against St. Louis, going 2-4 with a 5.18 ERA in eight career starts. That said, he did pitch well in his only game against them this year, outdueling Garcia on July 17 after giving up just one run in 7 1/3 innings.

Cincinnati entered Friday with a 7-5 lead in the season series against St. Louis. The ‘over’ had the slight edge in total betting at 7-5 through the first 12 games.

The Reds have struggled on the road at 30-36 (-5.50 units). St. Louis hasn’t done a great job taking advantage of playing at Busch Stadium, only four games over .500 at home with a 35-31 record (-9.55 units).

Weather reports indicate a hot and muggy day in St. Louis, with temperatures up to 96 degrees and a slight chance of thunderstorms. Bronson Arroyo and Edwin Jackson are penciled in to pitch in the series finale on Sunday.

Saturday's betting tips: Clemson on Death Valley skid

Who’s hot

MLB: The Rays are 5-1 in Wade Davis’ last six starts.

MLB: The Dodgers are 5-2 in their last seven games against a lefty starter.

NCAAF: The over is 7-1 in Houston’s last eight home games.

WNBA: Seattle is 9-1-1 ATS in its last 11 games against San Antonio.

Who’s not

MLB: The Mets are 0-4 in Dillon Gee’s last four outings following a quality start in his last appearance.

MLB: The Indians are 2-9 in David Huff’s last 11 starts on grass.

NCAAF: Clemson is 2-6 ATS in its last eight home games.

WNBA: Phoenix is 2-6 ATS in its last eight home games.

Injury not to be overlooked

Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutchen had to leave Friday’s game against the Cubs when he was hit by a pitch in the area around his left wrist. Pittsburgh’s cleanup hitter, McCutchen is batting .271 with 20 homers and 81 RBIs in a breakout season.

Key stat

29 – That’s how many times Rafael Furcal has led off a game with a homer after doing it Wednesday and Thursday against the Brewers. Furcal tied Kenny Lofton for the 13th-most leadoff homers in history. Furcal was 9-for-29 (.310) over his last nine games heading into Friday’s action, a major reason for St. Louis’ recent surge.

Game of the day

No. 3 Oregon vs. No. 4 LSU (3.5, 54.5)

Notable quotable

“He played with a very cool head and made good decisions. He played the way you want him to out there -- calm, cool, collected." – 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh aftger naming Alex Smith his starting QB. San Fran is a 6-point favorite in its Sept. 11 opener against Seattle.

Notes and tips

The Vikings and Saints will each be without a key defensive lineman for their first two games. The NFL suspended Minnesota DT Kevin Williams and New Orleans DE Will Smith without pay for violating the league’s policy on performing-enhancing substances. Packers QB Aaron Rodgers certainly won’t mind the absence of Smith (18.5 sacks the past two years) in Thursday’s opener. Host Green Bay is favored by four.

Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira missed Friday’s game against the Blue Jays with a bruised right knee, and he could miss the whole series. Teixeira, who ranks second on the team with 35 homers and 100 RBIs, was hit by a pitch thrown by Boston’s Alfredo Aceves on Thursday.

Florida Atlantic coach Howard Schnellenberger is expected to be on the sideline when his team plays Florida in Gainesville on Saturday. Schnellenberger, 77, complained of severe discomfort in his surgically repaired hip during a Friday bus ride and was taken to a hospital. But X-rays determined the problem wasn’t serious.

Saturday's streaking and slumping pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

STREAKING

Ricky Romero, Toronto Blue Jays, 13-9, 2.84 ERA

The 26-year-old lefty has won six straight decisions, and Toronto has won his last eight starts. Batters are hitting just .214 against him. Romero has gone seven straight starts without allowing more than three earned runs.

Ian Kennedy, Arizona Diamondbacks, 17-4, 3.03 ERA

Tied for the NL lead in wins with Clayton Kershaw, Kennedy has allowed one earned run over his last two starts covering 14 innings. Kennedy is 9-1 with a 2.35 ERA in his last 10 starts. Batters are hitting .232 against him.

SLUMPING

Brad Penny, Detroit Tigers, 9-10, 5.07 ERA

Penny has a terrible strikeout-to-walk ration of 65:50. He gave up two homers and seven earned runs in five innings against the Twins last time out. Batters are hitting .297 against him.

Brian Duensing, Minnesota Twins, 9-13, 5.09 ERA

The 28-year-old lefty has given up 16 earned runs over his last three starts covering 13 innings. Batters are hitting .303 against him. The Twins have dropped five of his last six starts.

Hot lines: Saturday's best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Dodgers at Atlanta Braves (-150, 8)

Braves lefty Mike Minor is 3-0 with a 3.24 ERA over his last three starts. Atlanta has won his last seven starts and eight of 10 overall when he takes the mound.

Dodgers starter Nathan Eovaldi has been decent in his five starts, posting a 3.46 ERA.

But he struggled badly in his last outing, at home against Colorado. He allowed five earned runs on six hits and two walks over four innings.

In their last 54 games as a home favorite of -110 to -150, the Braves are 40-14.

Pick: Braves

Chicago White Sox at Detroit Tigers (-105, 9)

A key AL Central series continues Saturday at Comerica Park when the White Sox face the Tigers.

Chicago starter Gavin Floyd has an unreal WHIP of 0.75 over his last three starts. The Sox have won all three. In Floyd’s last 12 starts against Detroit, Chicago is 9-3.

Detroit’s Brad Penny, meanwhile, just gave up seven earned runs over five innings in an 11-4 loss to the Twins. Batters are hitting .297 against him this season.

The Tigers are 1-4 in Penny’s last five starts, 2-5 in his last seven starts overall.

Pick: White Sox

Saturday's six-pack

-- Baylor 50, TCU 48-- The college football Game of the Year may have already been played. Bears led 47-23 in 4th quarter, needed FG with 1:04 left to win. Amazingly fun game to watch.

-- Jim Leyland won his 500th game as Detroit's manager Friday night; Justin Verlander has 104 of those 500, 21 just this season.

-- Brewers have now won their last seven games against Houston; they scored 45 runs in those seven games.

-- Derek Holland is 13-5 this season primarily because the Rangers are scoring 7.52 runs per game when Holland starts,

-- Matt Cain was the man for the Giants Friday, beating Arizona as the Giants moved to within five game of the first-place Diamondbacks.

-- Colts hired Jim Tressel as an instant replay consultant for game days. If Terrelle Pryor got suspended for the first five games, wouldn't it be fair for Tressel get a five-game suspension too?

*************************

Saturday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind.......

13) NFL teams have to cut down from 80 to 53 players by Saturday night, so multiply 27 by 32; 864 players will be unemployed on Sunday morning. Its hard to have a long career in pro football.

12) Sad day for Met fans Thursday, with the $200M Einhorn/Wilpon deal falling apart. The one thing Met fans needed more than anything this season was to get rid of the two nitwits that own the team. Now that seems far less likely. The nitwit Wilpons just won't go away.

11) Can someone explain to me how a major league ballclub playing in a brand new stadium lost $51M in 2010, and is expected to lose more this year? How did these people get rich in the first place? Oh wait, forget I asked; the older Wilpon is pals with Bernie Madoff.

10) Keep in mind that the Giants trailed San Diego by 6.5 games on Labor Day 2010, and still won World Series. Lot of baseball left to play.

9) For all the replays I’ve seen of Kirk Gibson’s walk-off homer in Game 1 of the ’88 World Series, I’ve never seen a replay of the walk-off HR Mark McGwire hit off Jay Howell later in that same series. Go figure.

8) Curtis Granderson has scored 124 runs this season; the next highest guy has 97.

7) Oregon State football coach Mike Riley was a big Alabama fan growing up, in part because his uncle was Bama’s basketball coach while Joe Namath was the Crimson Tide’s QB. Riley might be the most underrated college coach in America, having also been a head coach in the CFL, WLAF and NFL.

6) Phil Mickelson is switching to a belly putter; I’m no golfer, but it just seems like a long putter would make it so much easier to practice a lot. So much less strain on the back.

5) Lefty reliever Mike Gonzalez finally straightened himself out, not allowing a run in his last 13 appearances, so of course the Orioles traded him to Texas. Why keep the good players?

4) Tennessee football coach Derek Dooley is the son of former Georgia coach Vince Dooley, which makes his mom Barbara quite the expert on SEC football. Seems like she appeared on a few talk shows last season, but Derek has been banned her from appearing on talk radio this season, saying it hurt the Vols’ recruiting. Not sure that would’ve worked in my family.

3) Milwaukee Brewers are 12-0 at home when Zach Greinke starts; you wonder if they’ll factor that statistic in when they make their pitching rotation for the playoffs.

2) Houston Texans have never made the playoffs, but they are 5-0 against Miami, with four of the five wins by 3 or less points. Texans have never had a better chance to make the playoffs, with Peyton Manning’s neck injury making the AFC South appear to be a wide-open race.

1) Phil from Long Beach texted us the fabulous news that this fall, they’re putting a Steak ‘n Shake at 53rd and Broadway in Manhattan, meaning that Steak 'n Shake is now within 150 miles of Albany. Outstanding.
