Indianapolis Colts coach Jim Caldwell announced Friday that the team has hired Tressel as a booth game-day consultant with an emphasis on replay evaluation. Tressel will start Sept. 11, when the Colts open the regular season at Houston.
"I've been looking for, for a couple years now, a guy to work on a game-day sort of a status for us, an individual who had time on his hands but also an individual who had some experience as well that we could utilize for replay and different things of that nature, just on game day," Caldwell said. "We've found that person."
t's a new start for a coach scarred by a scandal that led to his resignation at OSU on May 30.
Tressel, 58, was one of college football's best coaches with a 94-22 record, including a 2002 national title at Ohio State . Tressel, who had 106 wins before the Buckeyes vacated last season's 12 victories, lied about having knowledge regarding five players accepting improper benefits, however. He was initially suspended and fined, then when allegations came to light about a pattern of impropriety dating to 2002, he was asked for and submitted his resignation. The NCAA is still reviewing the case.
Tressel was an observer at the Colts' 17-13 preseason victory in Cincinnati on Thursday night. He also attended a Colts practice at the West 56th Street complex last month.
"He will be in the booth and he'll work on different aspects for me. One, in particular, is as a replay consultant," Caldwell said. "What we're going to do is maybe take a couple of things off some of the guys' plate that are up in the box so they can concentrate strictly on their position, and thus he will be able to work some of those areas and become an expert in those areas."
