pretty cool, I had a 1966 ford truck with that mechanics behind it, born in 1963. I liked it for the few years I owned it.

most Americans under 30 can't even drive a car that isn't an automatic transmission. You ever own a column shifter, Tex ? I'm sure Wilheim has.

I guess the ability to drive a manual tranny is no longer essential in America ? I'd kind of like my kids to be able to drive me to the hospital in my 1966 truck if I had a Redd Foxx sort of heart attack.

That should be drivable enough....if I still had it, ain't like a 66 Ford is a Helicopter ! a licensed driver should be able to drive it, or at minimum a more conventional manual stick shift car/truck.

I've had many old standard trannies , but only the 66 Ford was on the tree.. I had a few with gigantic like 30" + plus levers to change gears. Something like a stick shift an 80's 240 Z or a Fiero was heaven to drive in comparison.

My long driven 1993 F-150 was crazy, really long throws between gears shifter was like 30", it really felt like you were driving a truck.

duplication there, but something like an elephant dick shifter on an old F-150 compared to maybe a 240Z, is crazy, put it on the tree and , I doubt many could even drive it !

My best friend I grew up with had a 71 or 72 Chevy truck that had 3 on the tree. I drove it many times.

My wife or elder step-daughter would be really laughable in a modern car with a manual tranny. They could manage to get it to move, and need a new clutch real fast, on the best day. The younger girl can drive. I'd want to see her with the old stuff !

Cool girl !

My old man has a black/gold hawkeye truck - a 64 c10 chevy - it used to be a 3 on the tree but was converted to the floor at some point. I never got to experience with the knob up on the tree.

If you can drive one you can drive them all 3 on tree-3 speed in the floor-4 speed-5 speed-6 speed.

I've driven tractor trailers for 22 yrs. I work for flooring manufacturer and we deliver all of our products locally. But I've anything from 3 speed on the column to 9 speeds-10 speeds-13 speeds-15speeds.

My first car was a 1956 Ford Fairlane with three on the column 292 Cubic inch V8 with a two barrel carb. Nothing special but to a 16 year old it was like a gift from above. I paid $100 cash for it and it ran great. Broke my cherry in the back seat some time around 1964...

Identical to one above (but not as cherry of course as it was a used car bought from a neighbor) if memory serves me right...Same color to boot.

It actually is difficult to purchase a stick shift now; I did and was discouraged; pointed out resale value would be low..>>240K miles later; only one clutch(What's that, lol??) change in all that time; still runs gr8..

I work as a buyer [part time] for a pre owned dealer & i don't even look at a standard shift to purchase for the lot, as it would have very few looking at to purchase. By the way, my first vehicle was a 1953 Chevrolet with an automatic[powerglide] transmission. I knew of a young girl back in the day [who was in Drivers Education] who was left handed & tore off the turn signal on the column, thinking it was the shifter handle to shift the gears,LOL!

Some cars should only be standards like a vette or any sports car, some should only be automatic like a Caddy, towncar or any old folks sedan. Something like a BMW could be standard because it is vette like.

To me a pickup truck can be either.

For resale value an automatic is preferable in something like a Honda Civic since so many Americans either can't drive a standard or would refuse the car because it is a standard.

I would guess that 50% of Americans under 40 would be unable to drive a standard or uncomfortable at best with one. Standards do kind of suck in city traffic.

I'm aware of those Pat ! I don't think I ever drank one. The pull tab stuff from I guess like the early/mid 70's is the earliest stuff I actually used. You'd have to be nearly 50 to even remember the pull tab pop cans ( and the hippie necklaces).

The real steel cans are a bit before my time, but early aluminum pull tabs are within my era, born in 1963.
