White Sox Close MLB Odds Series At Detroit Tigers

Like sand through an hourglass, so are losses to division rivals in September.

Time is quickly running out for the Chicago White Sox who close their series in Detroit against the Tigers on Sunday night (8:00 p.m. ET). ESPN's crew will be on hand to televise the contest from Comerica Park that pits Chicago southpaw Mark Buehrle against Max Scherzer of the Tigers.

Detroit grabbed the series opener Friday behind more stellar pitching from Justin Verlander who was laying -200 and higher on the Don Best odds screen. The 8-1 triumph maintained the Tigers' 5.5-game lead over Cleveland in the AL Central and dropped the White Sox 6.5-games back in third.

Saturday's second game of the series, still in progress, was just about a pick 'em on the betting lines, Gavin Floyd and Chicago slight favorites at most shops. The White Sox needed that game and Sunday's to make any headway in the division standings this weekend. Losing two of three, or worse yet, getting swept, would make things awfully tough on Chicago to make up at least 6.5-games with just 25 left on the 2011 slate.

Buehrle (17-9, 3.05) and Scherzer (17-11, 4.52) share several similarities heading into Sunday night's mound battle. Each has pitched his team to 17 victories this campaign, Buehrle doing it in two fewer starts. Both hurlers hail from the same general area, Scherzer from St. Louis proper and Buehrle from nearby St. Charles, MO. And they will be making their fourth starts of the season against the opposing lineups.

That's about where the connections end.

The veteran Buehrle has overcome a very bad April to become one of the most consistent arms in the American League. He's allowed more than three earned runs in just one assignment since the beginning of May, Chicago going a very healthy 15-5 in the 20-start span. Buehrle's ERA during that period is a stingy 2.47.

Two of his three trips to the hill against Detroit have gone into the win column, both of those starts at US Cellular Field in Chicago. His lone start here in Detroit was a disaster (5 2/3 IP, 6 ER), an outing that came during that awful month of April.

Scherzer enjoyed April with the Tigers 5-1 in his six games. But he's been anything but consistent in 2011 and prone to at least one meltdown a month all season.

He's coming off one such implosion this past Monday at home when the Royals pounded three homers and scored seven times before chasing Scherzer in the fourth. Detroit fell 9-5 as hefty 170 chalk.

The irony is Scherzer has been very good and very consistent against the Pale Hose in three 2011 starts. His 1.64 ERA in those games has only translated into one win, however, with the Tigers scoring just four runs combined to back the three efforts.

Eric Cooper will work the plate and brings a 15-11-2 edge to the 'over' into the game, 12-6 to the high side when the total is 8½ or less.

A 60 percent chance of thunderstorms during the day gives way to what should just be cloudy skies and temps in the 60s with a light win blowing out to left-center at game time.

The Tigers head to Cleveland following this game for a Labor Day afternoon affair that opens a 3-game set vs. the Indians. Chicago continues its road trip with a matinee contest Monday in Minnesota to begin a 4-game series.

Kershaw, LA Dodgers End Series At Atlanta Braves

The Los Angeles Dodgers hope to stay hot and keep their super-slim playoff hopes alive as they face the Atlanta Braves Sunday afternoon in the final game of their three-game series.

Sunday’s game will be played at 1:35 p.m. (ET) at Turner Field with NL Cy Young Candidate Clayton Kershaw and Randall Delgado taking the mound.

With Atlanta fairly locked into the the NL Wild Card spot – 8.5 games behind Philadelphia in the NL East and 8.5 games ahead of St. Louis and San Francisco in the Wild Card race entering Saturday – many eyes are on Los Angeles in this series. Entering the weekend 10.5 games behind the NL West-leading Arizona Diamondbacks, the Dodgers’ run is probably coming too late; but they aren’t giving up without a fight.

Los Angeles (67-70) has had pretty strong pitching all year, but the offense around Matt Kemp has held them back. Now, the supporting cast is heating up, and the Dodgers are 10-1 over their last 11 (+10.75 units) as a result.

Kershaw (17-5, 2.45 ERA) has been one of the National League’s best pitchers this season, and has been nearly unhittable in his last 10 games. He's is 9-1 over his last 10 starts (+8.00 units), and has given up two earned runs or less in eight of them; including five starts with no earned runs.

The southpaw received a no-decision in his start against Atlanta back on April 21, when he gave up three runs over 8 2/3 innings. Kershaw remains without a decision despite a 2.42 ERA in three career starts against the Braves.

Atlanta (81-56) was on a hot streak in August and appeared to be gaining a bit of ground in the NL East. But the Braves have leveled out of late with a 4-4 record (-2.05 units) despite being the betting favorite in every one.

Delgado (0-1, 3.60 ERA) will make just the third start of his career Sunday in place of the injured Jair Jurrjens. He lasted just four innings and took the loss in the first start of his career, giving up three earned runs to Texas on June 17.

The young Panamanian pitched much better in his last start on August 16 against the San Francisco Giants, giving up just one run over six innings in a game the Braves went on to win.

Los Angeles’ win over Atlanta Friday gave the Dodgers a 4-1 edge in the season series. The ‘total’ has trended ‘over’ at 3-1-1.

The Dodgers are 31-35 on the road in 2011 (+0.35 units), while Atlanta is 43-27 at home (+3.00 units).

Tony Randazzo will be behind home plate for Saturday’s contest. Home teams are 18-9 in his 27 games this season, and the ‘total’ has favored the ‘over’ at 16-11.

Sunday in Atlanta will be cloudy with a 30 percent chance of thunderstorms during the day, increasing to 70 percent in the evening.

Sunday's betting tips: Wandy rises to occasion

Who’s hot

MLB: The Astros are 7-2 in Wandy Rodriguez's last nine home starts against winning teams.

MLB: The Angels are 9-2 in Joel Pineiro’s last 11 home starts against losing teams.

NCAAF: SMU is 9-3 ATS in its last 12 games as an underdog.

WNBA: Tulsa is 5-2 ATS in its last seven games.

Who’s not

MLB: The Nationals are 2-10 in Livan Hernandez’s last 12 starts on four days’ rest.

MLB: The A’s are 5-16 in Trevor Cahill’s last 21 starts.

NCAAF: West Virginia is 1-7-1 ATS in its last nine home games as a favorite of 10.5 or more.

WNBA: Connecticut is 1-5 ATS in its last six games playing on one day’s rest.

Injury not to be overlooked

Yankees slugger Mark Teixeira sat out his second straight game Saturday with a bruised right knee suffered when he was hit by an Alfredo Aceves pitch Thursday night in Boston. Third baseman Alex Rodriguez returned to the lineup after missing six games with a sprained left thumb and batted third in Teixeira’s absence.

Key stat

17 – That’s how many shutouts the Rangers have pitched this season, including 12 on the road. Texas trails only the Phillies in shutouts. The Rangers’ road total is the most in MLB since the Braves posted 12 in 1998.

Game of the day

SMU Mustangs at Texas A&M Aggies (-15.5, 56.5)

Notable quotable

“Especially early in the season, it's going come down to blocking and tackling. It's going come down to protecting the football and the execution. That's typically what's going to win or lose games, especially a game like this that's first on the schedule in early September ... as opposed to these fancy new ideas that are going to be the reason a team wins or loses. It's going to come down to the basic things." – Saints coach Sean Payton on Thursday’s opener at Green Bay, which is a 4-point favorite. The NFL's previous Super Bowl winner has hosted the last seven Thursday openers and won them all.

Notes and tips

Tennessee RB Chris Johnson said after ending his holdout that he wants a full workload in the Sept. 11 opener at Jacksonville, but Titans coach Mike Munchak said “we have to make sure we don’t overdo it, especially early.” The Jaguars are 3-point favorites. Keep an eye on practice reports this week for a better gauge on how much Johnson will play.

Umpire Derryl Cousins will be behind the plate when the Pirates visit the Cubs on Sunday. The Over is 9-4 in Cousins’ last 13 games calling balls and strikes, and 5-2-1 in his last eight games involving Chicago.

Yankees rookie Ivan Nova has won 11 straight decisions and eight straight starts. The 11-game winning streak, by decision, is New York’s longest since Roger Clemens reeled off 16 straight in 2001. Nova is scheduled to pitch again Thursday at Baltimore.

Canadian Bacon: CFL Week 10 odds and picks
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Saskatchewan Roughriders (+3, 49.5)

The Blue Bombers are the team to beat in the CFL and you might think there is no hope for the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

But with Ken Miller back on the sidelines, you can expect a burst of passion and energy from these Riders. Since offensive coordinator Doug Berry was fired, QB Darian Durant said much was done to improve the playbook and he seems confident that he can cause confusion in the Blue Bombers defense, whatever mastermind Tim Burke may bring to the table.

Durant will have a new target with Dallas Baker dressing up for his first game with the Riders after being traded by the Alouettes for DE Luc Mullinder a few weeks ago. Defensively the Riders have improved since LB James Patrick return to play, picking up two of the six Saskatchewan interceptions.

In the hostile environment of Mosaic Stadium, where you arguably find the loudest fans in the country, all is in place to see the Roughriders get back on track and upset the Bombers.

Keep an eye on wide receiver Scott McHenry who, after being released by Winnipeg, will have a chance to face his former teammates. This will be the 47th Labour Day showdown between these two rivals, Saskatchewan having the edge with 29 wins.

Pick: Saskatchewan

Montreal Alouettes at Hamilton Tiger Cats (+2.5, 55)

Montreal’s secondary has been pretty banged up and the coaching staff had to fill many holes before heading to Hamilton where the Tiger Cats are hoping to prove they can win a big game against the Alouettes.

Already without DB Jerald Brown and S Etienne Boulay, the Alouettes will have to manage without CB Mark Estelle for the reminder of the season. LB Diamond Ferri has been hospitalized earlier this week with a pancreatitis, DE Jermaine McElveen is still nursing a knee injury and that MLB Shae Emry suffered a concussion that might prevent him of playing.

That means the Als head to Hamilton missing seven of their 12 defensive starters.

The Tiger Cats can still make a run for first place in the East and, if not for a few bad calls from their coaches, should have won against Winnipeg last week. With a great group of young receivers (Chris Williams, Aaron Kelly and Bakari Grant) at his disposal, QB Kevin Glenn will also welcome the return of Maurice Mann.

Pick: Hamilton

Edmonton Eskimos at Calgary Stampeders (-8.5, 48)

If you were only going by the standings you might think this is a game between the two best teams in the West. It’s not the case.
The Eskimos are depleted by injuries and we still can’t figure out who Ricky Ray will throw the ball on Labour Day for this showdown between Alberta’s archrivals.

C Aaron Fiacconi is the latest casualty and will be out for the rest of season which is no good news for a QB who has been sacked 18 times in the last three games, all losses.

Also note that since they released Arkee Whitlock after Week 5, the Eskimos ground game has been stalled.

Henry Burris and the Stampeders offense are rolling on all wheels and gave a stupendous demonstration of their potential last Saturday against the Alouettes. Burris and WR Johnny Forzani were named Offensive and Canadian player of the month in August, leading the Stampeders to three wins in as many games.

The Stampeders have won the last four Labour Day “Battle of Albertas”.

Pick: Calgary

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

STREAKERS

Clayton Kershaw, Los Angeles Dodgers (17-5, 2.45 ERA)

The 23-year-old lefty has won four straight decisions, allowing just two earned runs over that span. Batters are hitting .211 against him. He has an incredible strikeout-to-walk ratio of 212:50.

Jeremy Hellickson, Tampa Bay Rays (11-10, 3.01 ERA)

Hellickson has given up four earned runs over his last three starts covering 21 innings, but the Rays were shut out in his past two outings. Batters are hitting .218 against him. He’s yielded more than two earned runs just once in his past six starts.

SLUMPING

Trevor Cahill, Oakland Athletics (9-13, 4.26 ERA)

He’s lost four straight decisions, and just gave up five runs in 5 1/3 innings at Cleveland last Tuesday. In six August starts, the 23-year-old right-hander posted a 7.15 ERA.

Kevin Slowey, Minnesota Twins (0-3, 5.91 ERA)

The converted reliever has lost all three of his starts, allowing 13 runs and 22 hits over 17 1/3 innings. Slowey has a WHIP of 1.44 and gets very few batters to swing and miss.

Hot lines: Sunday's best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Baltimore Orioles at Tampa Bay Rays (-180, 8)

Jeremy Guthrie has a horrific 6-16 record, but the Orioles right-hander hasn’t pitched that badly lately. In his last two starts, he’s allowed four earned runs and 11 hits over 13 innings.

Rays starter Jeremy Hellickson has been dominant in his last three starts, posting a 1.71 ERA. Four of his last five starts have stayed under the total.
He also has a 2.41 ERA this season at Tropicana Field.

Hellickson shouldn’t have much trouble holding down Baltimore, which had scored 11 total runs in five games entering Saturday’s action.

The Under is 5-0 in Guthrie's last five starts in Tampa Bay.

Pick: Under

Colorado Rockies at San Diego Padres (-148, 7)

Even the light-hitting Padres should be able to get some rallies going against Rockies starter Aaron Cook. Opponents are hitting .354 against him on the road.

In Cook’s last six starts, he’s given up six homers and at least four earned runs four times. He owns a 7.41 ERA over his last three starts.

Cook has four quality starts all season.

San Diego’s Mat Latos has allowed three runs or less in nine of his past 10 starts. Since the start of July, he has a 3.31 ERA.

Pick: Padres

Sunday Night Baseball: White Sox at Tigers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago White Sox at Detroit Tigers (-135, 8.5)

The Chicago White Sox face the AL Central-leading Detroit Tigers in the finale of a crucial three-game series on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball.

CENTRAL HEATING

Detroit is on fire down the home stretch and has extended its lead over the Cleveland Indians and the White Sox in the AL Central. A big reason why the Tigers are in first place is their record against divisional opponents (36-21). The division race is far from over as the Tigers still have to travel to Chicago for three games beginning September 12.

“When you’re in the division like that, it gives the teams behind a chance to catch up and it gives the teams ahead a chance to take care of their business,” Detroit skipper Jim Leyland told the media heading into this series. “So it works out both ways.”

EYE OF THE TIGERS

Detroit is 9-5 against the White Sox this season, including an 8-1 win over the South Siders on Friday and a dramatic 9-8 comeback win Saturday. The White Sox have really struggled in Detroit, losing six of eight.

“We’re running out of games, we’ve put ourselves in a pretty bad position here but we’re not out of it,” White Sox pitcher John Danks told reporters.

It was Danks who couldn’t get out of the fifth inning after being tagged for eight runs in Chicago’s Friday night loss.

PITCHING TO THE MAX

Detroit’s starter Sunday, Max Scherzer, has been dominant against the White Sox although he doesn’t have the record to prove it. Scherzer, Detroit’s No. 2 starter behind Justin Verlander, is 1-2 against Chicago despite a lights-out ERA of 1.63 with 21 strikeouts through 22 innings. Scherzer is probably happy to see the White Sox on Sunday. He’s struggled lately, allowing seven earned runs in three innings to the Royals his last time out in a 9-5 loss.

OFF THE MARK

Chicago will counter with starter Mark Buehrle. Buehrle is quite the opposite of Scherzer when it comes to pitching against his divisional rival. Buehrle has a 4.58 ERA in his three starts against the Tigers. In his one start at Detroit, he was rocked for six earned runs in 5 2-3 innings. Even in his best start against the Tigers, when he went six scoreless innings, he still allowed 10 hits and a walk.

NOTEWORTHY NUMBERS

- White Sox are 3-13 in their last 16 games vs. a team with a winning record.
- Tigers are 10-2 in Scherzer’s last 11 starts with five days of rest.
- White Sox are 5-15 in their last 20 meetings vs. the Tigers including 2-9 at Detroit.
- Detroit OF Austin Jackson is batting .321 with 16 runs, 3 HR and 10 RBIs in the last two weeks.
- White Sox have won their last four Sunday games.
- Tigers are 4-1 in Scherzer’s last five Sunday starts.

Sunday's six-pack

-- Anyone notice that Ian Kennedy is 18-4 for first place Arizona?

-- Nationals' pitcher Tom Milone is apparently the 100th USC alum to play in the major leagues, most of any college program.

-- Kansas City Chiefs' coach Todd Haley was a college golfer, but didn't play college football. He golfed at both Florida and Miami.

-- USC didn't score in the second half, was outrushed 111-64 in a 19-17 home win over Minnesota that wasn't very impressive.

-- Troubled senior QB Stephen Garcia, the John Daly of the SEC, came off the bench with South Carolina down 17-0 and led the Gamecocks to a 56-37 win over gritty East Carolina. Would've been a bad loss.

-- Speaking of which, Oregon State and Duke both lost to I-AA teams Saturday. Kids in Durham want to know when basketball starts.

*********************

Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday.......

13) By my count, there were 38 games this weekend with a I-A football team playing a I-AA (lower division) opponent. In my opinion, no way should this ever happen- take those 38 teams, make up 19 games and go play, I-A vs I-A. Teams are afraid to lose games now, because the way the system is penalizes teams that play harder schedules.

12) In my opinion, teams like Oregon State/Duke who lose to foes from lower levels should immediately be ineligible for a bowl that season, to discourage these mostly ridiculous games from being played. Fans get charged good $$$ to watch Penn State-Indiana State, NC State-Liberty?

11) A few teams scored in last 2:00 to avoid being lumped in with both Duke and the Beavers; Wyoming-Iowa State-UTEP-Kansas State all had near misses vs inferior opponents. Washington beat Eastern Washington 30-27- thr Eagles outgained them by 154 yards.

What exactly did Cincinnati get out of beating Austin Peay 72-10? Were they tested? Did they learn a lot? No and no.

10) They drew 87,711 at Jerry World for Oregon-LSU, so teams made a ton of money, ESPN made money, Jerry Jones made some cash, but if one of the players got slipped $100 by a booster, the world would end.

9) Purdue paid Middle Tennessee, a Sun Belt team, $850,000; Utah State of the WAC got $950,000 to go to Auburn; problem is, no one told these teams that once they get the check, they're expected to lose. Utah State led 38-28 at Auburn with 3:38 left; would've big biggest win in school's history, but they couldn't cover an onside kick, suffering a bitter defeat, 42-38. Purdue has an excuse; its top two QBs are already hurt.

8) If Baylor's Robert Griffin III played at Notre Dame, he'd already be on the cover of cereal boxes and would be a cinch for the Heisman Trophy, which is symbolic of which Sports Information office has the most cash. Griffin is an amazing talent; he needs more recognition.

7) Former Rams' LB Mike Jones, who made the greatest tackle in history of the football, preserving the Rams' win in Super Bowl XXXIV, got his first win as a college head coach when his Lincoln Blue Tigers beat Avila 35-3 Saturday in Jefferson City. Jones was a high school coach for six years and then an assistant at Southern for a year before becoming a head coollege coach for the first time. We wish him well.

6) The paint used to paint the Oregon Ducks' green helmets cost $2,400 a gallon. This is living proof that you can find out just about anything you want if you know how to surf around the Internet. Most everything is already out there. Just have to know where to look for it.

5) Oakland Raiders cut backup QB Trent Edwards, keeping the hideous Kyle Boller ahead of him as the #2 QB while Terrelle Pryor re-learns the entire sport. Edwards was once the starter for the Bills.

4) South Florida went to South Bend, got five takeaways (three in the red zone) and upset the Irish 23-20 in a game delayed twice by storms. Skip Holtz has now covered 18 of his last 25 as a road underdog.

3) On July 18 they opened a casino ten miles outside Chicago; so far, it has taken in over $17.4M. Pretty soon, politicians are going to realize that sports betting is a goldmine ready to be found and sports betting will be legal. Don't think its a good thing, but also don't think its that far away.

2) Milwaukee catcher George Kottaras hit for the cycle in Houston as the Brew Crew once again whacked the Astros around. Kottaras becomes the second catcher since 1980 (Bengie Molina) to hit for a cycle on the road.

1) Mets led Washington 7-6 in ninth inning Saturday night, but Nats had men on second/third one out, with Bernadina up and Zimmerman out on deck. What did the Mets do? They walked Bernadina and watched as the powerful Zimmerman broke his bat and dropped a blooper into right to win the game. I repeat, they walked Bernadina to get to Zimmerman.

This is the same Bernadina who spent August in the minor leagues.
