I hope one of you math experts can help me with this equation.

If you could kindly explain it to me like a sixth grader, thank you .

Here it is.

Winning % = Runs ^ Exponent / (Runs ^ exponent) + ( Runs allowed ^ exponent)

I was using 1.84 as the exponent

I was trying the Braves as of a couple of days ago. Runs were 549 runs allowed were 480

I have no clue on what the symbol ^ means.

Please, if someone could go through how this is solved, thank you .

^ means.. to the power of so 3^2 means 3 to the 2nd power which would be 9

no .533

Thanks to Mikey it would go like this using my ex from above. 549 ^(to the power) 1.84=1010.16 /(1010.16)+(480 ^(to the power) 1.84=883.2) so putting it all together 1010.16 + 883.2=1893.36 so then its 1010.16/1893.36=.533

thanks

well ok 53.3% but you are only carrying two decimals.....when you do divisions and other operations (exponentiation etc) and you carry only two deciamls the final error you carry is way more than .01

so the number is more like .5614 than your .53 you are getting (do it in excel)

so it is 56% :)

Wolfe. I disagee with you. I am talking about winning % and its 53% which means they win 53 games out of 100.....by your math you are giving them 3 more wins. That doesn't make sense AND the math is incorrect. it comes out to .533 not .563. If you do it by my equation pen to paper its .533. I don't care where you did it. Its wrong you don't give a team 3 more wins "rounding up".

You are incorrect. END OF STORY.

And I was only looking for help on the equation and Mikey gave it to me. And I was asked to do the equation by another poster. So I did the equation for that person No one asked for your input, especially WRONG input.

Jesus H Christ this is why America is going down the toilet

Background: I spent 6 years studying Chemical Engineering , that includes 3 calculus, 1 numerical methods one ordinary/partial differential equations plus one Probability and Statistical courses

Now, I suggest you google "truncation error" "rounding error" , numerical methods books go into great deal into estimating how this propagates (not that you will get it anyway)

These days everyone is an expert when they cant even do two plus two

Why dont you go into any University and ask someone that is taking elementary math or calculus I to do this for you and see what it is???

In fact, since this is a gamblers forum why dont you put your $ where your mouth is , I will pay you 100 dollars if you are willing to bet that the result of the calculation is 53 and not 56, there are posters in here that could do it , for example Festering Zit is a computer programmer...Harry was a mechanical engineer if I recall correct...I am sure they can arbitrate this

You come to a forum , ask a question then get mad when someone corrects you? you should be PAYING ME for the time I am wasting on this!

How do I collect my 100 bucks????

Idiot.....

I am just trying to help the guy and because he takes a 1 dollar calculator and rounds everything to two digits (EVERY step of the way) suddenly I am told "noone asked for my input " and ON TOP OF THAT "I"??? am wrong

this equation is just an approx anyway so the result is DUH! also an approximation

and to continue my rant you CAN NOT do this with pen and paper anyway because the exponent is NOT integer (the ones that have a clue know that an exponentiation of a non-integer is not that easy , see "real powers" in here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exponentiation )

I will shut up now and let Falcon go back to the dark ages, he is probably coming with a pitchfork after me

I totally agree Wolf.

Who the hell come's into a forum, asks for help, and then bashes the person who correctly answers his question.

Like you said what the hell is this world coming to.

Wolfe, you didn't help. Mikey was the one who helped me. Your original post was "56 right". To me that reads like you were not sure. NOW you are some math expert.

AGAIN YOU DON'T GIVE A TEAM 3 MORE WINS BY ROUNDING UP!!!!

I showed you precisely how I came to my answer. If your this BIG MATH EXPERT NOW, then lets see your work. Show me where I'm suppose to give a team 3 more wins by rounding up .

And I am not name calling here or bashing. I"m simply stating FACTS. I show you my answer and how its done.

In one of Wolfe's earlier posts not only does he take the Lord's name in vain, he also name calls me .

Falcon Steelster.

P.S. If you are not going to post your work and go through it with me and show me where I'm wrong then do me one favor and don't post.

No I have never been banned from here.

Falconcrest:

you came up with .533

so out of:

10 games it's 5 wins
100 games it's 53 wins
1000 games it's 533 wins
10000 games its 5330 wins

do you see how your logic is flawed?

your measuring stick (2 decimal places) is less accurate than one that has say 4.

How accurate do you want to be?

doing it your way you get close, but are still 3 games off a more correct answer

wolfs answer is more accurate than falcons because he did his "dividing" with more accurate numbers.

you see the more numbers after the decimal point the more accurate the number (measurement) is.

it's kinda like language.

the more words you use the more accurate a description you can make:

you can call someone an:
idiot
freaking idiot
clueless freaking idiot
ungrateful clueless freaking idiot
no talent waste piece of crap ungrateful clueless freaking idiot

see how when you add more words it gives a better picture of what you are describing?

it works that way with numbers too

56 right? = I wanted to make sure you got it right since you didnt have a clue about what an exponentiation is so I was making sure that you were "sort of " in the right track

I am not giving a team 3 more wins by rounding up, YOUR ANSWER IS WRONG because in this case with your pathetic rounding of numbers up to two digits the error you get by doing that propagates to more than 0.01

About the Lord in vain, I am an atheist so that really doesn't matter to me but I've heard that expression in many places so lets not have a heart attack about it, if it matters that much to the Universe (and you) I take it back , your number is STILL off

Why should I continue giving you lessons on math if you ALREADY stated that I am wrong?

Your answer is off (and any other answers you get applying different numbers WILL ALSO BE OFF, by how much , that depends on the specific numbers )
