Hudson And Braves Battle Philadelphia Phillies

The Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies have nearly wrapped up two postseason bids for the National League East Division, as the two will be playing the second of a three-game set Tuesday. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. (ET) at Citizens Bank Park.

Atlanta has an outside shot of capturing the division, trailing Philadelphia by 7½-games to start the week. The Braves hold a comfortable 8½-game cushion over the St. Louis Cardinals in the Wild-Card standings.

The 2011 season series was tied at six games apiece entering Monday's series opener. Cliff Lee and the Phillies were pirced at -200 in the game with a 7-run total.

Tim Hudson (14-8, 3.05 ERA) is scheduled to make his 29th start of the season and is coming off a solid 5-2 home win over the Washington Nationals. He surrendered a single run and five hits over six frames.

The right-hander has actually led the club to wins in six of his last seven starts, which has led directly to his 6-2 record and 2.20 ERA in 10 outings since the All-Star break.

Hudson will be facing the Phillies for the 21st time in his career, coming in with an even 7-7 mark and 3.65 ERA, including a losing 1-2 record and 3.98 ERA in five tries at Citizens Bank Park.

He will want to pitch carefully to Philadelphia first baseman Ryan Howard, who is batting .298 with six home runs and 13 RBIs in 47 career at bats against Hudson.

Bettors will be surprised that the Braves are 3-7 in his last 10 road starts when matching up with winning ball clubs.

Philadelphia ended a seven-game road trip with a 5-2 record, dropping the final two games in South Florida against the Marlins. The losses snapped a 36-game streak without consecutive defeats away from the City of Brotherly Love.

The Phillies have played magnificent baseball in front of the their adoring fans, coming into the series with a sparkling 46-22 home record.

Vance Worley (10-1, 2.85 ERA) was handed his only defeat of the season back on May 29 in New York, which is also the last time the team dropped a contest with him on the hill.

The rookie has tallied a perfect 5-0 record and 1.96 ERA in nine home starts, as opponents are hitting just .175 against him. He has allowed just two home runs in 55 innings in a hitter-friendly ballpark.

Worley has made two career appearances (one start) versus the Braves, combining to toss six shutout innings and scattering just two hits. Total bettors will find that the ‘over’ is 6-1 in the right-hander's last seven games overall.

Weather forecasts suggest game-time highs in the mid-70s and a 60 percent chance of scattered thunderstorms throughout. The wind will be out of the southwest at 10-15 mph (out to center).

The ‘under’ is a surprising 8-5 in those playing conditions.

Milwaukee Brewers, St. Louis Cardinals MLB Betting Preview

Adopting a three steps forward, two steps back approach isn't going to cut it for the St. Louis Cardinals. They continue their series with – and chase of – the Milwaukee Brewers Tuesday night with the first pitch slated for 8:15 p.m. (ET).

St. Louis appeared ready to chase down the Brewers in the NL Central after pulling off a three-game sweep in Milwaukee this past week. It is the only time the Brew Crew has suffered a series sweep this season at Miller Park where Ron Roenicke's club owns the best home record in the majors (50-19).

The Cardinals left Milwaukee having cut the Brewers' lead down to 7.5-games and were flying high as they came home to begin a weekend set with the Reds.

But then St. Louis took a couple of steps back by dropping two of three to Cincinnati, and the Redbirds entered Monday's series opener against Milwaukee 9.5-games behind the division leaders.

Tony La Russa's Cards were slight 115 favorites in the Labor Day matinee that saw most shops listing 8½-runs for those betting the total.

The good news for the Cardinals in Tuesday's game is they'll be facing a pitcher who they have taken to the woodshed twice in the past five weeks. Yovani Gallardo (17-12, 3.68) will be on the hill for the Brewers while St. Louis counters with Kyle Lohse (14-12, 3.72).

Gallardo was pummeled last week at Miller Park, giving up eight runs in 4 2/3 innings to absorb an 8-4 loss as a 185 favorite. The right-hander served up four gopher balls in the game, two by Albert Pujols who has a .480 career batting average vs. Gallardo with four dingers.

St. Louis also got to him for five runs – four earned – in five frames here at Busch Stadium on Aug. 11. The Cardinals (-120) took that contest, 5-2. Gallardo's other start this season vs. St. Louis also came in this park on May 7 with much better results (8 IP, 1 H, 0 R).

The bad news for La Russa and St. Louis is Lohse has not been anything close to the same pitcher who fashioned a 7-2 record and 2.78 ERA through June. The club is just 5-5 in his 10 appearances since then, Lohse's ERA an unsightly 5.71.

His lone start vs. Milwaukee this year came against Gallardo on May 7. Lohse worked eight strong innings, giving up just one run on six hits, but suffered the 4-0 loss when Cardinals hitters couldn't figure out Gallardo.

Milwaukee is close to getting Rickie Weeks back from the disabled list. The second baseman has been out of action since late July with an ankle injury, and could be activated during this series and see some pinch-hitting duty. Weeks could begin playing in the field early next week.

Weather should be fine for Tuesday's game, perhaps even on the cool side with the temperature dropping through the 60s and into the 50s during the game. A 10-15 mph wind from the northeast (in from right-center) is in the forecast.

The series draws to a close Wednesday night with a nice matchup on the mound. Chris Carpenter is in line for St. Louis opposite Milwaukee's Zack Greinke.

HEY Varkey......wazzzzzzzzzzzzzz up ?

Texas tries to cool off sizzling Rays

TEXAS RANGERS (80-62, +1.5 Units)

at TAMPA BAY RAYS (77-63, +4.1 Units)

First pitch: Tuesday, 7:10 p.m. EDT
Line: Texas -120, Tampa Bay +110, Total: 8

It may be too little too late, but the surging Rays have gone 18-9 since August 8 and look to win their fourth straight when they host Texas on Tuesday night. The Rangers are just 2½ games up on the streaking Angels in the AL West and need to string some wins together to stay on top.

Getting the ball for Texas will be C.J. Wilson, who is seeking his second straight 15-win season. Wilson has pitched well against the Rays in his career going 3-0 with a nice 2.90 ERA. Facing Wilson will be the big right-hander, Jeff Niemann, who has a 5.79 ERA in his past three outings. Texas has been very good against right-handed starters this year going 60-40. When Wilson is on the mound as a favorite of -110 or higher, the Rangers are 33-12 over the last two seasons. Niemann has had problems winning in September, where he is 2-6 with a 5.88 ERA in his career. Tampa Bay has oddly been worse at home (38-32) than on the road (39-31) in 2011. The Rangers are starting to feel the Angels breathing down their necks and will get a solid pitching performance from C.J. Wilson in a TEXAS victory on Tuesday night.

Two more FoxSheets trends favoring the Rangers include:

TEXAS is 26-11 (70.3%, +15.2 Units) against the money line vs. an AL starting pitcher whose WHIP is 1.200 or better this season. The average score was TEXAS 5.1, OPPONENT 3.5 - (Rating = 2*).

TEXAS is 40-26 (60.6%, +12.0 Units) against the money line when the total is 7 to 8.5 this season. The average score was TEXAS 4.8, OPPONENT 3.6 - (Rating = 1*).

Wilson (14-6, 3.28 ERA) has been able to give the Rangers long outings all year, going at least six innings in 24 of his 29 starts. Wilson threw a gem Thursday against Tampa, starting out with five perfect innings and finishing with two runs allowed on two hits, one walk and eight strikeouts in a 7-2 victory. Wilson did reach out bare-handed for a comebacker and hurt his index finger, but X-rays later came back negative.

The Rays still find themselves seven games behind the Wild Card leading Red Sox, but crazier things have happened in September. Niemann (9-6, 3.69 ERA) is coming off a poor performance on Thursday against Wilson and the Rangers in which he allowed five runs and six hits over five innings in the 7-2 loss. The 6-foot-9 right-hander has limited opponents to a measly .194 batting average over his past four outings, but has been killed by the gopher ball, serving up five home runs in the 27.2 innings. Niemann has been great in night games, posting a 3.24 ERA compared to his 5.33 ERA in day games.

Strasburg returns to mound Tuesday vs. Dodgers

LOS ANGELES DODGERS (68-72, -6.8 Units)

at WASHINGTON NATIONALS (65-74, +0.3 Units)

First pitch: Tuesday, 7:05 p.m. EDT
Line: Washington -150, Los Angeles +140, Total: 7.5

The last time Stephen Strasburg took a major-league mound was August 21, 2010. Over a year later (and one Tommy John surgery later), arguably the most-hyped draft pick in MLB history will look to prove he is healthy and back to elite form, taking the rubber against the Dodgers Tuesday night. This is the second game of a four game series, with the Nationals taking Monday’s opener 7-2.

Despite Monday’s win, Washington is currently in a major funk, having lost 10 of its past 13 games. The Dodgers, on the other hand, have won 11 of their past 14. L.A. lefty Ted Lilly has been at the heart of that resurgence, allowing only three runs in winning his past two starts. The last time he allowed more than three runs in a start was July 23, against none other than the Nationals. Given its recent hot play and the odds favoring the Washington due to Strasburg’s hyped return, play heavy underdog LOS ANGELES to win.

The FoxSheets support the Dodgers pick with this three-star trend:

Play On - All underdogs with a money line of +100 to +150 (L.A. DODGERS) - on a good fielding streak, 15 straight games with one or less errors, in September games. (87-61 over the last 5 seasons.) (58.8%, +44.6 units. Rating = 3*).

Watch out for how Washington limits Strasburg in his first time back. Manager Davey Johnson has indicated he’ll throw fewer than the 70 pitches he was limited to in his final rehab start.

Lilly (9-13, 4.39 ERA) started this year dreadfully, but has picked it up recently. He had a 2.35 ERA and 0.91 WHIP in August, with 31 strikeouts in 38.1 innings. In that span, opponents had a .170 batting average against him. He has yet to pitch against the Nats this year but has a 4-3 record and 3.29 ERA against them all-time, as Washington has batted a paltry .223 off him. Lilly is definitely the play in this game against a starter who may not go more than a few innings.

Strasburg quickly established himself as one of the best pitchers in baseball prior to the injury. In his much-heralded rookie debut last season he was 5-3 with a 2.91 ERA and 1.07 WHIP in 68 innings. With 92 strikeouts and only 17 walks in that span, he possesses an explosive arm. However, the Dodgers are in the bottom third in the majors in batting strikeouts, so he’ll have to be on top of his game to mow down this lineup.

Tuesday’s betting tips: Strasburg starts for Nats

Who’s hot

MLB: The under is 10-3-2 in the last 15 meetings between the Twins and White Sox.

MLB: The L.A. Dodgers are 3-11 in their last 14 games in Washington.

WNBA: Connecticut is 7-3 against the spread in its last 10 road games.

Who’s not

MLB: Seattle is 2-7 in Felix Hernandez’s last nine starts against the Angels.

MLB: Florida is 7-22 in its last 29 overall.

WNBA: The over is 6-19-1 in San Antonio’s last 26.

Key stat

15 – The Detroit Tigers may be 7-3 in Rick Porcello’s last 10 starts against the Cleveland Indians, but that trend is misleading. Porcello has been hammered for 25 hits, four dingers and 15 runs in his last two starts against the Tribe, which spanned 14 1/3 innings. Cleveland is a -120 favorite Tuesday.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Osi Umenyiora, New York Giants - Umenyiora is expected to be sidelined for at least the first two weeks of the season. NFL.com reported that Umenyiora could possibly return for the Week 3 game against Philadelphia. The Giants have officially ruled him out for their Week 1 tilt against Washington. New York is set as a 3-point road favorite.

Game of the day

Milwaukee Brewers at St. Louis Cardinals (-105, 8.5)

Notable quotable

"We've got to take care of our own business. We don't want to have someone lose for us to get in, we wanna get there because we're playing well at the end of the year." – San Antonio Silver Stars sharpshooter Becky Hammon on her club’s game against the L.A. Sparks. The Silver Stars can secure the fourth and final playoff spot in the West with a win but are pegged as 3.5-point road underdogs.

Notes and tips

The Washington Nationals will finally welcome Stephen Strasburg back to action Tuesday more than a full year after he hit the shelf with an elbow injury. Strasburg was electric in his rookie season last year, going 5-3 with a 2.91 ERA and 92 strikeouts in only 68 innings of work. The Nats are set as -155 favorites against the Dodgers.

Rookie Liam Hendriks will make his big league debute Tuesday for the Minnesota Twins against the Chicago White Sox. Hendricks was 12-6 with a 3.36 ERA in 25 games between Double-A New Britain and Triple-A Rochester this year. The Twins are set as +115 underdogs.

The Washington Redskins have officially named Rex Grossman as their starting quarterback for Week1. Grossman, in his second season with the Redskins, beat out John Beck for the starting job. He appeared in five games for Washington in 2010, passing for 884 yards with seven touchdowns and four interceptions.

Tuesday's six-pack

-- Maryland's new football helmets are beyond horrendous. Don't mind the jerseys, but I'm big on normal-looking helmets. These are awful.

-- Miami administration had to be thrilled; so much conversation about Terps' uniforms, no one talked Miami's problems with the NCAA.

-- Lost in the commotion about Maryland's hideous uniforms is that the O'Brien kid is a pretty good QB, and only a sophomore......

-- Javier Vazquez is in the top 30 all-time in strikeouts? Who knew?

-- Dontrelle Willis has three wins in his last 38 starts. 38!!!!!!

-- This is the best week of the year to be an adult; who didn't dread the first day of school when you were a kid? Not anymore.....

Tuesday's List of 13: Comparing DirecTV to digital cable.....

13) Only reason I switched from digital cable to DirecTV is to watch the NFL Sunday Ticket at home. Other than pizza, the Sunday Ticket is possibly man’s greatest invention.

12) NFL Network is also good; miss those NFL Films shows ESPN used to show before they became The Poker Network. In August, NFLN re-airs all the exhibition games, so that’s a good way to smarten up and get ready for the season. They also have Thursday night primetime games during the second half of the regular season.

11) If you like horse racing, TVG (channel 602) is way better than the OTB Channel that is shown in Albany. TVG has very good handicappers giving their picks on each races and even on Pik-4 and Pik-6 tickets. If I bet the horses, I would definitely want some of these guy’s picks before I wagered.

10) DirecTV just has more channels; there is a Sports Pak available that gives you all the FOX regional stations, which helps during football but is just tremendous during college basketball season.

9) Along those same lines, the Extra Innings package on DirecTV gives you the choice of which teams’ announcers you want to listen to, which isn’t available on cable. A small thing, but still a good thing.

8) Not sure what they call it, but there is a station that shows eight games at once, so you can monitor all the action. Gives you what channel each game is on, makes me want to go out and buy a bigger TV. But then I’d need a bigger house to put it in.

7) Weather Channel is better on cable, because it gives you more locally-oriented info. Not a big deal for me, but some people care about this.

6) WGN from Chicago is another station that isn’t on cable; this is good for 4:00 spring training games from Arizona in March, plus a few extra times a week to watch Entourage.

5) Cable companies have local news channels and public access channels that show local high school sports; DirecTV doesn’t carry these.

4) Again, as far as the Full Court college basketball package goes, just no comparison, a lot more options on DirecTV, especially once you get the Sports Pack. Awful lot of games on in the winter; thats a good thing.

3) Big difference between cable and DirecTV in order sports packages are ordered; with cable, you have to call and order say, the Extra Innings package each spring. With DirecTV, once you have a package, they’re automatically renewing it for you until you call and tell them not to.

If you’re paying attention to what you buy, this really doesn’t matter so much, but it is a big difference and a little bit of a convenience if you get the same stuff every year.

2) I’m wearing out the laminated card they give you that tells you what number each station is. When you’re flipping channels, the title of whatever show is on that channel appears on DirecTV, which helps some.

1) One of the raps on satellite TV is that it goes out during storms. We just had a hurricane/tropical storm pass thru here Saturday night/Sunday and my dish went out for 8-10 minutes at around 2:30am late Saturday night. Other than that, it was fine. Like I’ve said before, if not for the NFL package, I’d probably still have cable, but I do think that DirecTV is the overall better product.

Tuesday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

Vance Worely, Philadelphia Phillies (10-1, 2.85 ERA)

The Phillies have won each of Worely’s last 12 starts including a 6-4 decision over Cincinnati the last time he toed the rubber. The rookie wasn’t at his best, allowing four runs on eight hits over six innings, though he did strike out seven.

"It's kind of weird," Worley told reporters recently. "I didn't know I'd be doing what I was doing. I thought I'd just be up for a cup of coffee this year."

Ted Lilly, Los Angeles Dodgers (9-13, 4.39 ERA)

Lilly has finally put it together, posting a 2.35 ERA during August. Still, the Dodgers won just two of his six starts during the month. The last time he took the hill he gave up just two runs over 5 2/3 innings in a 4-2 win over San Diego, though he did struggle a bit with four walks.

"Today was one of those days where Rod [Barajas] did the best with what he had as far as working with me," Lilly said. "It makes it tough on what fingers to put down."

Slumping

Brett Myers, Houston Astros (3-13, 4.81 ERA)

Myers hasn’t won a game in three months, but is hoping a little time off helped him get back on track. He missed his last start to attend the birth of his fourth child, but heads into this game with a 0-7 record with a 4.87 ERA since the middle of June.

"You can only control what you can control," Myers said. "I'm going to go out there and keep trying to give us the best chance to win. If the wins are there, that would be great. If not, there's nothing I can do about that."

Phil Hughes, New York Yankees (4-5, 6.75 ERA)

Hughes gets another shot to hold onto his spot in the rotation, but he’ll have to pull it together in a hurry. He has allowed six runs in each of his last two starts and has 37 strikeouts and 20 walks in 60 innings of work so far this season. His WHIP is sitting at 1.55.

Hot lines: Tuesday's best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Baltimore Orioles at New York Yankees (-250, 10.5)

The New York Yankees are cruising toward yet another AL East crown and after a slow start, captain Derek Jeter is really coming around.

Since going 5-for-5 and hitting a home run for his 3000th hit, Jeter has hit .346 since then to raise his season average all the way up from .254 in early July to .298 heading into Monday’s action.

"I've said all along, I don't think I realized the pressure he was under to get those 3,000 hits," Girardi told reporters of his captain. "Everything in his career, he's always handled with such grace and been able to relax in the big moment. But since he's gotten past [3,000], he's been a different player."

We won’t go near the Yanks at this price, but the over looks tasty with Phil Hughes and Tommy Hughes sharing the hill.

Pick: Over

Detroit Tigers at Cleveland Indians (-115, 8.5)

Grady Sizemore came off the DL Monday, giving the Cleveland Indians an emotional boost if nothing else as they got ready to tangle with the division-leading Tigers.

Sizemore drove in a run in his return, but the Indians still fell 4-2 to the Tigers as Doug Fister went crazy with a career-best 13 strikeouts. That loss moved Cleveland to 7.5 games back of the pace in the AL Central and by the sounds of things, the Tribe shouldn’t be counting on too much from Sizemore over the next little while.

"I'm still working through a knee injury and I'm coming off of surgery," Sizemore said before Monday’s game. "There's going to be a little rust. I'm not going to just come out there and be 100 percent and in midseason form. But I feel good, I feel strong, and I'm just ready to get back out there."

We appreciate his hustle, but can’t see the Indians catching the Tigers, even though we do like them in this spot. The Tigers have won only four of their last 17 games in Cleveland.

Pick: Indians

Rounding the bases: This week's best betting trends
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every week, we update you on who's hot, who's not and situational betting spots in Major League Baseball.

HOT TEAM: Los Angeles Dodgers

THIS SEASON: 68-71
LAST WEEK: 6-1

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: At the Nationals for four, at the Giants for three.

THE SKINNY: Much has been made of the race between the Diamondbacks and Giants in the NL West. Now, that Arizona truly has the upper hand now, perhaps people will start to notice the left-for-dead Dodgers.

Is Los Angeles going to mount an autumn rally? Absolutely not. But Matt Kemp and Co. are salvaging a little pride here in September, and that’s good news for bettors.

Heading into Monday’s matinee vs. Washington, the Dodgers had won 11 of the last 13 games, and Sunday’s 4-3 loss to the Braves snapped a six-game winning streak. Kemp, with a home run and three RBIs on Sunday, took terrific totals of 32 and 105 into this week’s action.

The Dodgers, 11.5 games behind Arizona through Sunday, are still playing with some fire for Don Mattingly. And at this point, it’s clear they’re shooting for an over-.500 seasons. Might want to jump on board.

COLD TEAM: Pittsburgh Pirates

THIS SEASON: 64-76
LAST WEEK: 2-5

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: Home to the Astros for three, home to the Marlins for three.

THE SKINNY: A month ago, after the additions of Derrek Lee and Ryan Ludwick, it seemed clear the Pirates were going to snap that awful 18-year-long streak of losing seasons. Heck, they were still even challenging in the NL Central at that point. But you can forget the latter now, and the former is about to head that way, too.

At 12 games under .500 through Sunday, and 19.5 games behind the first-place Brewers, it's all over but the crying for the Pirates. The morale is gone, the fans are, too, and when you get swept by Houston of all teams, like they did last week, there’s not much left to go on.

OVER TEAM: Baltimore Orioles

O/U THIS SEASON: 75-58-5
O/U LAST WEEK: 4-2-1

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: At the Yankees for four, at the Blue Jays for three.

THE SKINNY: Who says bad teams don’t make any money for bettors? Not only are the Orioles one of the best fade teams out there -- if you can stomach the price, of course -- Buck Showalter’s crew is still clicking in the over category, even in September, when rosters expand and offense often disappears.

Not when you play the Orioles, who allowed 24 runs in the first four games this month, and also gave up 24 in just three games vs. Toronto last week. Starter Jeremy Guthrie, the best they have to offer right now, has a 4.45 ERA and lost his 17th game on Sunday. Keep Baltimore on your over radar.

UNDER TEAM: Oakland Athletics

O/U THIS SEASON: 69-59-12
O/U LAST WEEK: 2-5

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: Home to the Royals for three, at the Rangers for three.

THE SKINNY: The Athletics were on an over run for the ages earlier this summer, and if you knew when to jump off that train, kudos to you. It wasn’t going to last forever, right? There are a lot of bad offensive teams in the American League and the Athletics play in a pitchers park, after all.

So, Oakland has cooled off, to say the least, in over-land. A four-game winning streak through Sunday has coincided with some pitching and defense. Oakland rolled up a five-game under streak along the way, and headed into Monday’s series opener vs. Kansas City, having registered two shutouts in the last four games.

The offense has been quiet at times, as Josh Willingham (79) is the only Athletic with a realistic shot at 100 RBIs, and Sunday’s lineup vs. Seattle, featured only one hitter with a .280 average or better (Jemile Weeks, .292). Oakland -- thanks to the summer surge that’s now long gone -- should still finish above .500 with overs. But if you’re an under player, you might want to ride this wave through the rest of the month.
