Oswalt And Phillies Meet Braves On ESPN

ESPN is apparently tired of waiting for the Philadelphia Phillies to officially clinch a postseason berth. Their MLB standings page lists the Phils with a 100 percent chance to make the playoffs, though their magic number sits at 16 entering play on Tuesday.

The Phillies look to trim that number down Wednesday night in their series finale against the Atlanta Braves. First pitch from Citizens Bank Park will be shortly after 7:00 p.m. (ET) with ESPN televising the contest nationally in front of their broadcast of the Mariners, Angels contest.

Wednesday's mound matchup pits youth vs. veteran as Atlanta sends rookie Brandon Beachy (11-10, 3.37) up against Philadelphia's Roy Oswalt (8-11, 3.80). It's a rematch from an April game in Atlanta.

You won't get much argument from anyone about the Phils' chances of not only making the playoffs, but being the team to beat this October. Atlanta is among their potential roadblocks to a third NL pennant, and the Braves were soundly beaten in Monday's series opener when the Phillies (-215) rode Cliff Lee's sixth shutout this campaign to an easy 9-0 win.

Philadelphia was favored to pick up win No. 90 Tuesday night, the Phillies laying -125 behind some youth of their own, rookie Vance Worley.

Beachy will be looking for his first career victory against the Phils with Atlanta dropping all five of his assignments against its division rivals. The right-hander's three results in 2011 have netted a 5.79 ERA in 14 innings.

He did post a quality start in the one start here in Philly on July 8 (6 IP, 2 ER, 6 K), but fell short as a 145 underdog opposite Roy Halladay.

As unbelievable as it might sound, Oswalt could be on the outside looking in when it comes to being in the postseason rotation. He's definitely pitched his way into the No. 5 spot statistically, and has just five more starts at most to try and extend his streak to 10 seasons with 10 wins or more.

This will be Oswalt's third start vs. the Braves since joining the Phils in July 2010, and both have been Philadelphia wins with the righty tossing 13 innings combined and allowing just one earned run.

Oswalt was an even-money underdog April 9 at Turner Field when he and Beachy matched up. Philadelphia broke a close game open with a 5-run seventh on the way to a 10-2 victory, Atlanta's usually strong bullpen the primary culprit in the loss.

Calling the pitches in the series finale will be Jerry Meals who recently crossed the 500-game mark for regular season duties behind the plate. The 'over' is 14-11-3 in his 28 assignments this season, and on a 5-0-1 run his last six.

A wet day is in Philadelphia's Hump Day forecast, with a 60 percent chance of showers in the evening. Temps should hover in the low-to-mid 70s the entire game with a light ENE breeze (RF corner in towards 3B).

Atlanta leaves for the Big Apple after this game for a one-day stop to play a doubleheader against the Mets at Citi Field. The Phillies take off for Milwaukee to face the Brewers for four, Game 1 of that series on Thursday.

LA Angels Host Seattle Mariners MLB Betting Preview

The Los Angeles Angels can’t afford any letup against their AL West rival Seattle Mariners in the series finale on Wednesday night.

This is the second half of an ESPN doubleheader after Atlanta at Philadelphia. First pitch from Angel Stadium of Anaheim will be at 10:00 p.m. (ET), with the MLB odds available soon.

Los Angeles (77-64) trails Texas by 2.5 games in the AL West, with time running out and a division title the only realistic path to the playoffs. The series opener on Labor Day was a 7-3 victory with the Angels exploding for six early runs off Anthony Vasquez.

The Angels are now 9-1 in their last 10 home games and 7-1 at home against the Mariners this year (4-5 away in Seattle).

Tuesday night’s middle game was still pending, a fantastic pitching duel between Felix Hernandez and Ervin Santana. Seattle was a 135 underdog in MLB betting, despite Hernandez sporting a 1.88 ERA in three starts against the Angels this year.

Jerome Williams (2-0, 4.58 ERA) will start for L.A. on Wednesday. The 29-year-old right-hander is a good story after being out of the majors since 2007 and winless since 2005. He has a 7.13 strikeout rate and just three walks over 17 2/3 innings.

Williams has made five appearances (two starts) since being called up in August from Triple-A Salt Lake. He last started on August 30 at Seattle, allowing four earned runs over seven innings in an easy 13-6 win. He then had a short relief stint on Sept. 2, having his start skipped after Jered Weaver was pushed back to attend a funeral.

Williams has a 1.00 ERA in his three home appearances, including a one-run, seven-inning gem versus Baltimore on Aug. 21 (7-1 win).

The Mariners (58-82) have lost five straight pending Tuesday, last beating the Angels on August 31 behind a complete game from Hernandez. This is the lowest scoring team in the AL (3.45 runs per game), scoring 61 runs less than any other squad.

Lefty Charlie Furbush (3-7, 4.97 ERA) will start for Seattle. He was acquired from Detroit at the trade deadline and hasn’t distinguished himself (2-4, 6.39 ERA) since.

The 25-year-old rookie last pitched on Thursday against the Angels. He surrendered four earned runs over six innings in a 4-3 home loss. He did settle down pretty well after a 3-run homer by Torii Hunter in the first inning.

Seattle is just 1-4 in Furbush’s last five starts (7.20 ERA). The two on the road have been ugly at Tampa Bay (8-0) and Texas (9-2), allowing a combined 11 earned runs over seven innings.

The ‘under’ is 4-0 in Furbush’s last four starts, but that’s only because the Mariners scored a combined 10 runs.

The Angels are 19-7 in their last 26 games against a lefty starter. The ‘over’ is 6-1 in the last seven versus a southpaw.

L.A.’s offense ranks just 10th in the AL (4.13 runs per game). However, it’s been much better the last 16 games at 6.5 per game. The ‘over’ is 12-4 during that span.

Seattle is just 6-20 on the road in the second half. The ‘over’ is 6-1 in the last seven away, allowing 6.14 runs per game.

Laz Diaz will call balls and strikes. The Angels are 21-8 the last 29 games with him behind home plate. The ‘under’ is 10-1 the last 11 times he’s been behind the dish against Seattle.

There are no significant injuries for either team. Weather also won’t be a factor, clear and in the 70s.

Seattle will return home to host Kansas City beginning Thursday, while L.A. has a day off before welcoming the Yankees on Friday.

Phillies try to complete sweep of Braves

ATLANTA BRAVES (82-59, +8.4 Units)

at PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES (90-48, +18.6 Units)

First pitch: Wednesday, 7:05 p.m. EDT
Line: Philadelphia -135, Atlanta +125, Total: 8

The Phillies look for the sweep as they wrap up a three-game set with NL East foe Atlanta on Wednesday night. The Braves, who are now 9½ games behind Philadelphia, will send strikeout machine Brandon Beachy to the mound. The two teams play one more time this year in the final series of the season.

The Phillies are slight favorites in this matchup, sending Roy Oswalt to the mound against Beachy. The two pitchers have remarkably different styles, with Beachy having notched 66 more strikeouts in just 16 more innings this season. However, the Braves are 0-5 all-time against Philly with Beachy on the hill and Oswalt has held the Braves to 1 ER in 13 innings in his past two starts against them. Given the Phillies’ hot play (winners of seven out of their last nine) and tremendous home record (48-22), the pick here is for PHILADELPHIA to get the sweep.

The FoxSheets back up the Phils with this three-star trend.

PHILADELPHIA is 53-18 (74.6%, +31.5 Units) against the money line when playing against a team with a winning record in the second half of the season over the last 2 seasons. The average score was PHILADELPHIA 5.2, OPPONENT 3.2 - (Rating = 3*).

Beachy (7-2, 3.37 ERA) is a strikeout artist, with 22 punch outs in 18 innings over his past three starts. However, the Phillies are one of the most difficult teams to whiff in baseball, with the fourth fewest K. This could explain Beachy’s poor numbers against them over his career with an 0-3 record and 1.63 WHIP in five starts. On the positive side, Beachy has been great on the road this year (4-1, 3.24 ERA, 1.15 WHIP) in leading the Braves to a 7-3 record in these 10 away starts.

Oswalt (7-8, 3.80 ERA) isn’t the ace he once was, but is still a crafty veteran who can get guys out. He dominated Atlanta earlier the season, allowing just one earned run in six innings. He also shut the Braves out for seven innings, allowing just one hit, one walk and fanning eight in a home start against them last September. In Oswalt’s last start Friday at Florida, he got the win with 7 K in 6.1 IP, allowing three runs and eight hits.

Angels are heavy favorites in Seattle Wednesday

SEATTLE MARINERS (59-82, -18.9 Units)

at LOS ANGELES ANGELS (77-65, +5.5 Units)

First pitch: Wednesday, 10:05 p.m. EDT
Line: Los Angeles -190, Seattle +180, Total: 9

After losing a pitcher’s duel Tuesday night, the Angels need to bounce back when they host Seattle on Wednesday.

Los Angeles fell 3½ games behind Texas in the AL West race after being shut down by Mariners ace Felix Hernandez in Tuesday’s 2-1 loss. The Angels offense had been on a tear prior to that game, averaging 6.5 runs over their previous 16 games. The M’s win snapped a five-game losing streak, and Seattle has lost nine of its past 10 games in which it didn’t have Hernandez on the hill. While Angels starter Jerome Williams is a question mark, he pitched well against the Mariners earlier this season, and Seattle starter Charlie Furbush has been miserable all year. Even with the meager payout, LOS ANGELES is the pick.

The FoxSheets show another trend supporting the Angels:

L.A. ANGELS are 26-6 (81.3%, +17.9 Units) against the money line in home games vs. terrible power teams - averaging 0.75 or less HR's/game in the second half of the season over the last 2 seasons. The average score was L.A. ANGELS 4.6, OPPONENT 2.9 - (Rating = 2*).

Once considered a top prospect in the Giants system, the 29-year-old Williams (2-0, 4.58 ERA) is trying to revive his career with the Angels. His last appearance in the majors before this season was 2007. He went 7-2 with a 3.91 ERA, primarily as a starter, for Triple-A Salt Lake and he’s held his own in the bigs. The right-hander has won both his starts, including a victory in Seattle on August 30 when he allowed four runs over seven innings, striking out six. He also limited the Orioles to one run over seven innings, striking out six while walking none in his only home start of the year on August 21.

Furbush (3-7, 4.97 ERA), who came to Seattle from Detroit in the Doug Fister deadline deal, has really struggled since joining the M’s. He’s just 2-4 with a 6.39 ERA for the Mariners, and he’s dropped his past three outings while allowing 13 runs over 14 innings. After spending the early season in the bullpen, the left-hander is 2-6 with a 6.75 ERA in eight starts (with Detroit and Seattle). That included a loss to the Angels last Thursday, in which he allowed four runs over six innings.

Wednesday's betting tips: D-Backs surge up money standings

Who’s hot

MLB: The under is 9-3-2 in the Chicago Cubs’ last 14 home games.

MLB: The Chicago White Sox are 17-5 in their last 22 games as a favorite.

WNBA: Indiana is 10-2 against the spread in its last 12 home games.

Who’s not

MLB: Washington has won three of its last 13 overall.

MLB: Pittsburgh is 2-8 in its last 10 games as a favorite.

WNBA: Washington is 1-7 against the spread in its last eight overall.

Key stat

26 – With their second-half surge, the Arizona Diamondbacks are running away with the lead in Covers.com’s MLB team money standings. Heading into Tuesday’s game the 81-60 Diamondbacks had earned supporters about 26 units on the year.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Lance Moore, New Orleans Saints – Moore was held out of practice again Tuesday and is officially listed as questionable for Thursday’s opener at Green Bay with a groin injury. Moore had 763 receiving yards and eight touchdowns last year. The Saints are currently pegged as 4-point underdogs.

Game of the day

Atlanta Braves at Philadelphia Phillies (-140, 8)

Notable quotable

“You knew they had the pitching, but you knew unless they got hot and a little lucky, no one had them winning it. But they got hot and they got lucky, and they were a great underdog story. They really were.” – an unnamed National League scout told Sportingnews.com about the San Francisco Giants’ title run last season. The Giants sat seven games back of the NL West-leading Diamondbacks ahead of Tuesday’s action.

Notes and tips

MMA oddsmaker Joey Oddessa set odds for UFC 41’s main event between Brock Lesnar and Alistair Overeem, which goes Dec. 30 in Las Vegas. For now at least, both fighters are set at -115, though Oddessa doesn’t rule out action on Overeem moving the line in the ex-Strikeforce titleholder’s favor. Lesnar hasn’t fought since losing his belt to Cain Velasquez in Oct. 2010.

Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said Tuesday he is changing quarterbacks, replacing senior Dayne Crist with sophomore Tommy Rees for Saturday's game at Michigan.Kelly announced the change during his weekly news conference. The Irish are coming off a season-opening 23-20 home loss to South Florida in which Crist started but was benched at halftime and replaced by Rees. Crist won the job in training camp but was just 7-of-15 for 95 yards and an interception that was returned for a score, helping the Irish dig a 16-0 halftime hole. Rees came on and was 24-of-34 for 296 yards, two TDs and two picks. Notre Dame is currently set as a 3.5-point underdog at the Big House.

Thanks to a rain delay, Tuesday's matchup between the New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles didn't get started until about 11 p.m. ET. The two clubs are back at it Wednesday for an afternoon matinee currently scheduled for 1:05 p.m. ET. New York is set as a -200 favorite.

Wednesday's six-pack

-- Detroit Tigers will be tough in short series with Verlander, but they also have Doug Fister, who has a 2.64 ERA in 44.1 IP with Detroit, with three walks and 36 strikeouts. They might be tougher than Texas.

-- For some reason, Packers have five tight ends on their roster. Why?

-- There is actually a pro tennis player named Jack Sock? Sounds more like the stage name for a porn star.

-- Since losing 18-2 Sunday night, White Sox have allowed one run in winning their last three games. Tough year in Minnesota.

-- Baltimore-Bronx game was scheduled for 7:05 start; game didn't start until 11pm because of rain, but it was still raining when they started. How greedy can you be? With a 1pm game scheduled Wednesday, they started a game 14 hours before that one? Nitwits.

-- Jaguars released their starting QB five days before the season starts? It saves them $8M, but what kind of a way is that to run a team?

***************************

Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

13) When Tennessee hired Lane Kiffin, they did LSU a huge favor. How? Kiffin brought in his dad as defensive coordinator, but the Vols already had John Chavis, one of the best DC’s in America. So when Chavis was sent packing, Les Miles gladly scooped him up, and its no coincidence that the Bayou Bengals now have one of the best defenses in America.

12) Speaking of Tennessee football, the Vols recently bought their way out of a scheduled 2013 road game at Oregon. No sense going all the way cross country to play a game you don’t think you can win.

11) Toronto Blue Jays are 9-0 at home in extra inning games.

10) Over the last decade, Chargers have been favored in three playoff games, but lost all three- their only playoff wins this decade both came as underdogs in Indianapolis.

9) Out of all the games in the major leagues this season, only twice has a pitcher allowed 10+ hits and struck out 10+ in the same game: Matt Garza against the Pirates April 3, and CC Sabathia in Boston August 30.

8) Another oddity last weekend; Francisco Cervelli batted four times Saturday, and saw only four pitches, putting each one in play. It’s the only time in the major leagues all season a player batted 4+ times and never took a pitch, putting each pitch in play.

7) The Mike Scioscia coaching tree is a strong one (Maddon-Black-Roenicke) but Maddon may wind up being more influential than Scioscia; lot of teams have copied his more extreme shifts against powerful lefty hitters, and the Brewers have copied Tampa Bay by trying to lighten their mood on road trips, having “theme trips” where the travelling party all dresses a certain way, according to where they’re going. They all dressed in western garb on their trip to Houston last weekend. Whatever works.

6) Since 2003, the Colts are 50-17 in games decided by 7 or less points.

5) Hue Jackson is Oakland Raiders’ 7th coach in the last 11 years and that’s not including any interim coaches there might’ve been. Steelers have had three head coaches since 1969.

4) Was surprised to read that Boston hasn’t hosted an NBA All-Star Game since 1964. Hell, even Las Vegas hosted one a few years ago.

3) There have been 883 coaching changes in Division I college football since Joe Paterno became Penn State's coach in 1966.

2) Why is Mississippi State playing Auburn/LSU within five days of each other, I mean other than to get a game on ESPN? Bulldogs have a good team now; they should protect their players better than this.

1) All this conference realignment talk makes me sick, but it is kind of interesting; its like a multi-million dollar game of musical chairs, where no one wants to be left standing outside the BCS, which is where the big money lies. As in all games, some schools are going to be losers (Iowa State? Baylor?). Ton of politics going on behind the scenes.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wednesday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

David Price, Tampa Bay Rays (12-12, 3.41 ERA)

Price’s numbers aren’t what his supporters were hoping for this season, but he’s been fantastic lately. The lefty has 25 strikeouts over his last two starts, the most of any MLB starter over consecutive outings this season. What’s changed? The big guy found his change-up.

"[Having the changeup] gives me a lot more confidence out there. ... That's what I've been looking for for about 26 years,” Price told reporters. “I finally have a feel for a changeup and it really makes me feel good."

Justin Verlander, Detroit Tigers (21-5, 2.34 ERA)

Total no-brainer here. Verlander has won nine straight starts, allowing more than three runs just twice over that span. Verlander has been great for the bullpen, going at least seven innings in all but one of those starts, including his last outing, an 8-1 win over the White Sox. The big right-hander struck out six and walked just one and now ranks fourth in MLB starter money standings, earning more than 11 units for his supporters.

Slumping

Brandon Morrow, Toronto Blue Jays (9-10, 4.78 ERA)

There’s little doubt that Morrow has the tools to be a solid MLB starter - he has 172 strikeouts in 148 innings this season. The problem’s been consistency. The Jays have lost five of his last six starts and he has served up six dingers over his last three trips to the hill.

Chris Carpenter, St. Louis Cardinals (8-9, 3.92 ERA)

You used to be able to pencil Carpenter in for 15 wins and a 3.00 ERA every year, but those days appear to have passed him by. While he’ll still come around with a gem every now and then, you have to temper your expectations. The Cardinals have lost each of his last four starts and he has allowed 12 runs over his last two starts.

Hot lines: Wednesday's best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Red Sox at Toronto Blue Jays (-110, 9.5)

So now Red Sox supporters are hoping seven times is a charm?

Knuckleballer Tim Wakefield makes his seventh walk to the mound in search of his 200th career win Wednesday in Toronto and if he doesn’t make it happen this time around, he may not get another chance this year.

Wakefield has been stuck on 199 wins since July 24.

The BoSox are trying to juggle a six-man rotation at the moment and Wakefield could end up as the odd man out considering the rest of the rotation’s depth. He was drilled for four runs and a pair of homers in four innings of work against the A’s in his last start.

“There’s nothing really on his part. He still threw the ball the same way,” catcher Jarrod Saltalammachia told reporters. “But they just did a great job fighting pitches off. Fouling them off. They were taking pitches, so when you fall behind, you’ve got to try and throw a strike.”

The 45-year-old did look pretty good in shutting out the Texas Rangers in three innings of relief duty last Friday, so maybe this is the spot that he breaks through.

Pick: Red Sox

Detroit Tigers at Cleveland Indians (+145, 7)

The Cleveland Indians received a big boost for their playoff push Tuesday when second baseman Jason Kipnis came off the DL.

Kipnis has been out of action with abdominal and hamstring injuries since Aug. 12, but is hitting .279 with six homers and 11 RBIs in only 68 at bats this season.

"It wasn't fun," Kipnis told reporters of his stint on the shelf. "To have the oblique happen when I was kind of starting to get settled in and get a little bit of confidence going. Then I was going to try to play through it, and I head out to the line and the hamstring happens. ... But it's just another bump in the road."

The Indians still have tons of bumps ahead of them if they’re going to make the postseason, including this matchup against Justin Verlander and the Tigers.

We’ll jump on the under.

Pick: Under
