bad, give him a couple years to develop.

he'll turn out just like claussen did, or a slightly better version if hes thrown in right away

It's a great Idea. Get him involved early and learn on the fly. Cam is a dynamic player, who can make a difference right away. His legs will allow him to extend plays outside the pocket. Question is will he be able to read a pro style NFL defense. If he can use both of his TE's and get help from his 2 stud RB's he should develop into a serviceable QB. I don't think he will ever be great, but he will be a good mid pack QB. Maybe a Jason Campbell type with more running ability.

Not like they are a potential playoff team. Might as well throw him out there and start the learning process on your franchise qb.

With ARIs horrible run defense from last year in mind, week1 might be Newtons best chance all year to shine...

Bad idea for any team without Jimmy Clausen as the other option. Good idea here.

They aren't going anywhere anytime soon. Baptism by fire. Probably wouldn't hurt this guy to get humbled along the way.

Its a great idea. Who else is better than Cammy Cam Newton?? His confidence can't get shattered because he won 2 National Titles in 2 Years (One in Juco and One in College) and his faith is very strong. Plus, he's from the A-T+L so he likes that southernplayalisticadillacfunkymuzik. Cam is da man.

A mistake as Claussen is superior by far. It is hard to tell with the lack of talent they have though.

Bad idea. See: David Carr, Alex Smith - QBs who could have been great, but got shell shocked by being thrown out there too early.

But I guess the alternative isn't much better...

Bad idea.

Go get a veteran QB to teach him the game and show him the ropes.

Before everyone anoints Newton the next NFL superstar, you have to realize he did this against one of the worst defenses in the game. He's going to have games where he turns the ball over 3 or 4 times as well. Keep it in mind bettors.

Guess they had nothing to lose. My original thoughts were to not start him. He surprised the heck out of me. Lets see how he does week 2

I realize Arizona was daring the Panthers to pass on them by stuffing the box. But 400 yards out of the shoot in a competitive game and not just prevent defense garbage time is pretty impressive. I have never seen a rookie RB rush for 200 yards in his first game or a receiver catch 150 yards and 2 scores in his first game no matter what crappy CB is covering him. Of course Newton is going to have his ups and downs this season but the simple fact that the Panthers didn't try to protect the play of their QB and call nothing but check down plays or dinks and dunks speaks volume for the possibility of Newton becoming elite in this league.

Just saying, but even Claussen had a 107 QB rating against ARI last year and did that against a secondary that at least had Rodgers-Cromartie back there...besides that game he only had one game with a rating >80, so let's just wait and see, how he does against GB and other potent defenses...

Will have his hands full and brain scrambled this week trying to read Dom Capers defense. This will be a true test for him.
