every once in a blue moon I get this severe pain in my mouth, it really doesnt feel like its a tooth or anything, but more so a severe pain in my jaw/side of my mouth. It happened a month or two ago and came back last night. The pain was horrible and felt like it spread to my ear, just a pounding pain. I was popping excedrin pm's and using ambosyol to try to knock myself out/numb the pain. i finally feel asleep around 3 am an when i woke up this morning felt perfectly fine. When i was out work today the pain came back all of the sudden out of no where (was not eating anything).

I had similar years ago and had to have a root canal. Tooth itself didnt hurt, but the nerve goes to your ear and eye. Evil pain. I have found that aleve is pretty good for numbing the nerves in your mouth.

Well ambesol wont do anything for pain that is below the surface of the gums. What you have is akin to a cavity in a tooth that is now affecting the root of the tooth. That type of pain wont hurt often, but when it does it can radiate to the side of the cheek and ears.

For instance, when you have to a shot at the dentist for a cavity in your lower mandible, then normally that pain from the shot radiates up the cheek and near the ear for about 2 seconds

its either a root canal OR do you grind your teeth at night?? you might need a nightgard... but mostly likely sounds like you need a ROOT canal and get it fast before you get an abcess

With that type of pain, he already has an abcess. But you dont want the abcess spreading and going systemic

I'd go to the doctor as a tooth infection can go right to the brain and kill you or give you a heart attack.

go see a dentist. Likely dental in origin (wisdom tooth, infected tooth). If it's not dental he'll advise accordingly. If you don't have a dentist and its after hours (such as now), most major cities have a dental emergency clinic with extended hrs. If not, go to the hospital. If its really serious, an oral surgeon is on call. M.D will likely put u on antibiotic and a Rx for an analgesic and advise to see ur dentist first thing Monday

are u swollen? extra-orally or intra-orally? malaise? fever?
