Two questions, really.

First, I will be in Vegas Nov 9-14 and plan to do some non-casino stuff, since that's all I've done when there in the past.

I'd like to take at least one full day to do some hiking. Bearing in mind that I am not acclimated to intense dry heat (from Toronto-ish) where can I hike up to 15 miles or so and not kill myself? I can probably handle an elevation change of up to 3000 ft, based on past experience, but don't do any actual rock climbing. Switchbacks or up to Grade 2 rock scrambling only. I've been looking into Red Rock Canyon .. is it too touristy??

Also, any Vegas Rxers wanna get together for drinks while I'm there? I will be for sure parked in a Sportsbook (not sure which one, yet) that Sunday (week 10) but otherwise have a fairly flexible itinerary.

Finally, a vacation!!! Yay!

I would've like to have gone, but I had an MRI that Friday. Unfortunately those things have to come first for me now. Boo!

I'm going to Vegas with a bunch of poolplayers, will be hard-pressed to find another hiker in the group. I'm only looking at reasonably populated areas, just in case I get hurt or lost or something. Don't worry, I do long treks all the time, so know the drill.

I think Red Rock will be the place to go. Looks pretty, and there seems to be a fair bit of variety.

Quantumleap: I'm going to try to do a week-long Grand Canyon trip next year. How far are you from the South Rim?

About 3 hours. Count me in if you're going.

Mount Charleston is a great spot for hiking.I used to attend the BCA Amateur Pool Championships every year in May at The Riviera with my pool playing friends
and you are right it was hard to get many from that crowd to join me for the ( 2hour hike up and 1 hour hike down). It is about a 45 minute drive from the strip up to the parking lot ( elevation at this spot is around 7500 feet- not far from the Mount Charleston Lodge )where you start the hike up in Mount Charleston.
The hike I used to take was called " Big Falls " which is better than The "Mary Jane Falls" hike.Check it out online--there is a slide show.I have hiked in Red Rock Canyon also, but Mount Charleston is spectacular. You won't regret it.One of my favorite places I have ever visited in the world.

XP,

I am actually really glad you mentioned this. When my wife goes with me, she likes to do non-casino things and I never even thought about hiking (which we love) in Vegas.

Great suggestion. Have a great trip.

When younger I always liked Valley of Fire. About 45 mins N on 15. Awesome spot. And yes Mt. Charlston is great. In Nov. it will be very chilly up there, could even be some white stuff. Have a great time kiddo!! The lodge there is beautiful.

Miklos, do you think that hike is too ambitious for a solo, unacclimated hiker? I was reading about Mt Charleston today and while I'd love to go, I'm not sure it would be wise ... I'm not conditioned for mountain hiking and so doing it alone could be dangerous. I'm definitely going to Valley of Fire. That seems reasonable to do solo. (Silver7, a bit of snow is okay. I hike in January here, so ....)

I also joined a Vegas hiking Meetup group today so will latch on to a pack of strangers and let them show me around. They have about 4000 members and a handful will be on at least one hike per day, often more. With luck, there will be a Mt Charleston hike scheduled while I'm there.

Miklos, do you live in Vegas? I'm there for TAP, and ya, they are all a bunch of lazy drunk bastards. One guy said he'd hike from bar to bar with me, tho. lol.

That would be great! I think I will have the Saturday night free, and of course there is football in the sports book on Sunday. :) I'd love to see you guys. How are you liking living there, so far?

Miklos, do you think that hike is too ambitious for a solo, unacclimated hiker? ---- I have never had any problems doing hikes up in Mount Charleston.Have always done it with at least one other person.I would not advise going solo to "Big Falls".Mary Jane Falls hike is more easily done if going solo. Both hikes start off from the same parking lot."Big Falls" veers to the left following a dry river bed and "Mary Jane Falls" hike veers to the right up an easily walked trail to the top.

I also joined a Vegas hiking Meetup group today so will latch on to a pack of strangers and let them show me around. They have about 4000 members and a handful will be on at least one hike per day, often more. With luck, there will be a Mt Charleston hike scheduled while I'm there. ---- That would be ideal " You will love it up there".

Miklos, do you live in Vegas?----- I used to live there for a few years and spent much time going up to Mount Charleston either hiking or "Skiing" .

I'm there for TAP, and ya, they are all a bunch of lazy drunk bastards. One guy said he'd hike from bar to bar with me, tho. lol.------ I can relate so much with what you are saying as I would arrange the hike each year with a few of my " healthier sort pool player friends" and always they would be gung ho to go and of about 15 that had agreed to go only about 3 or 4 ever made it------LOL

Have fun---Wish I was there to show you that "Big Falls" route.

Miklos, I may have convinced my hiking buddy (she also plays pool, but isn't going on this trip) to come to Vegas with me! If she does, we are going to hike Griffith Peak which is 3100 feet up, and 9 miles long. My ass is gonna burn from that one!

Next year I'm going to try to hike through the Grand Canyon. Quantumleap will probably come, too. If you live anywhere near there, you should come with us. That will be a hike to remember, for sure!
