Tom Brady expects to see some "lubed up" and "rowdy" fans at the New England Patriots home opener this weekend against the San Diego Chargers.
At least that was his message to Pats backers in an interview taped by MyFox Boston.
A reporter asked Brady - who threw for an NFL record 517 yards in a 38-24 win at Miami in Week 1 - if he was looking forward to the home opener and if he had any message to the fans.
"Yeah. Start drinking early," said the quarterback with the lingerie-model wife and usually pristine image to a gaggle of giggling sports reporters. "Get nice and rowdy. It's a 4:15 game, plenty of time to get lubed up and come out here and cheer for their home team."
Now, while no one pretends that drinking does not happen at NFL games - the league has its own official beer sponsor, after all - some may come to the conclusion that it may not be the best idea for arguably the league's most recognizable star to imply fans should get lubed up and/or rowdy under the influence of alcohol. Especially considering that alcohol-related fan incidents have been getting plenty of media attention over the past few seasons.
But, as luck would have it, a Patriots spokesperson, Stacey James, later clarified Brady's comments - just so there is no confusion.
James said, less than an hour after the QB's comments according to The Associated Press, that Brady meant fans should "stay hydrated, drink a lot of water. Be loud. Drink responsibly."
Here is where it is pointed out that one is more likely to need a jacket on a September day in New England than an entire crate of bottled water.
The Sunday forecast in Foxboro, Ma. calls for a high of 66 and low of 48 degrees.
