Three-time Pro Bowl cornerback Chris McAlister has only been out of the game for a year, and already, he's telling the court system that he's broke.
McAlister is locked up in a child support battle with his ex-wife Marlene, and is trying to get his child support payments lowered. He currently owes her $11,000 per month. In documents filed to the court, claims he can't pay her because he doesn't have any money. From TMZ:
In the docs, Chris -- a 1st round NFL draft pick in 1999 who played in the league for 10 years -- states, "I have been unemployed since 2009. I have no income."
He adds, "I live in my parent's home. My parents provide me with my basic living expenses as I do not have the funds to do so."
This is a guy who's only been out of the game for one year. Who's giving him financial advice, Ric Flair? McAlister's not even officially retired. He spent 10 years with the Ravens, and was once considered one of the best corners in the game. He was with the Saints, in 2009, but didn't see a lot of playing time before being released.
In 2004, he signed a seven-year, $55 million contract. Now, some of that was money that he never saw, and he was released after five years of the contract, so it wouldn't be accurate to say he completely squandered $55 million.
But he did squander plenty. The signing bonus was reportedly $10 million, and it also included a $7.5 million roster bonus for 2005. The year before he signed the contract, he made almost $6 million. The last two years of the $55 million contract, which McAlister didn't see, were worth $8 million each.
As the Baltimore Sun points out, it wouldn't be surprising if McAlister was "broke as a joke" given his hardcore partying habits.
If the name Marlene McAlister sounds familiar, it's because her and Chris' marital issues found their way to TMZ once before. In April of last year, Marlene claimed that Chris kicked her out of his home when she refused to have an abortion.
Roger Goodell can probably go ahead and cross McAlister's name off of his list of guys to invite to speak at the rookie symposium.

I wouldn't pay $11,000 a month at gun point. That will cause you to go broke with a child support payment that large.

he saw 39 million of that contract at least that is what i read. granted i dont know any child that needs 11000 a month but he made plenty of money to pay 18 years at that rate. send his ass to jail and snip his junk effing retard does not need to make anymore babies.

Two things:

1. It's estimated he made ~$50+ million over ten years. $50 million at 6% interest is $3 million a year without ever touching the principle. That's $250,000 per month; ~$58,000 a week; $8,200 a day. Regardless of the economy, any investment advisor worth anything can make 6% with $50 million.

2. To spend $50 million over 12 years (since he's been drafted in '99), without any investment, he had to spend ~$4.2 million every year. That's $347,000/month, $80,000/week, $11,000/day.

The point? In some people's world, it's not too much to ask for $11,000/month in child support. Especially when you have the money to spend that every day.

To be fair to him, he probably paid a good 40% of his $50M in taxes, fees to his agent, etc.

But, fuck him. Time to put your University of Arizona degree (?) to the test. Get a job, asshole.

Hey..a guy has to take care of his homies.

Honestly, if I was a professional athlete and I had a "friend" ask for a dime, I would stop talking to him forever. I don't care how long he has been in my life or how close a friend he was.

If I had a friend that was a wealthy professional athlete, I wouldn't expect anything more than a beer once in a while.

I worked at a financial planning firm who handled several atheletes here in the Bay Area and we used to talk about it all the time. These guys just don't get a clue. They all could be set for life. FOR LIFE! Simply if they followed the savings principles Cowboy T mentioned above. Hell they could be set for life just by socking away their signing bonus and deferring it until retirement because they could live on their salary.

If there were any defense to McAllister's financial situation, he also may have dealt with a money managers or people who was stealing from him. A millionaire can easily go broke if just a few guys were skimming off the top every month.

Yes, but how are people stealing from you, unless you give them POA?

Fred Taylor and several other Jaguar (and former UF) players got taken by Tank Black (who is now in jail). Fred lost his entire rookie signing bonus to Tank Black.....

(google "Tank Black scandal", if you don't know the story)
