Brewers Open Up Series At Cincinnati Reds

The Milwaukee Brewers and Cincinnati Reds begin a three-game series Friday night from Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati, with the first pitch scheduled for 7:10 p.m. (ET).

The Brewers currently own a six-game lead in the National League Central division over the St. Louis Cardinals with exactly 13 games left on the schedule for both teams. Cincinnati goes into this series in third place in their division, a full 14 games out of first place and mathematically eliminated from playoff contention.

Starting for the Brewers on Friday night will be their veteran left-handed pitcher Randy Wolf (12-9, 3.44 ERA), who is 2-0 (team is 3-0 in that span) in his last three road starts. Wolf has pitched against the Reds twice this season, with the Brewers going 1-1 in those games.

Pitching for the Reds at home will be Bronson Arroyo (8-11, 5.28 ERA), who has only picked up one victory in his last 13 starts overall. Arroyo has started 10 games this season in which he has allowed five or more runs and Friday may be no different with Milwaukee’s potent offense in town.

Wolf and Arroyo faced each other back on April 3rd in Cincinnati and the Reds were able to come up with the victory, 12-3. The win came behind a stellar pitching performance by Arroyo (7 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 0 BB, 5 K) and a real tough start from Wolf (4 IP, 10 H, 6 ER, 2 BB, 5 K).

Milwaukee begins a 6-game road trip with this series against the Reds followed by a trip to Wrigley Field to face the Chicago Cubs. The Brewers finish the regular season with a 6-game home stand against the Marlins and Pirates.

Cincinnati on the other hand will be in the middle of a 10-game home stand when they face the Brewers on Friday night. The Reds will follow this three-game set against Milwaukee with three games against the last place Houston Astros.

The Reds currently lead the season series 8-5 (5-1 in Cincinnati) over Milwaukee. The Brewers are 3-14 in their last 17 meetings in Cincinnati, while Arroyo is 4-1 in his last five starts against Milwaukee.

The ‘over’ is 12-3-1 in Arroyo’s last 16 starts versus a team with a winning record and the Reds are hitting left-handed pitchers a full 12 points higher at home this season.

Friday night’s forecast shows partly cloudy skies and a pretty frigid night for baseball with a temperature of approximately 49 degrees

Friday’s betting tips: BSU cashing in big on the road

Who’s hot

NCAAF: Boise State has covered in 20 of its last 27 road games.

MLB: The Atlanta Braves are 8-3 in Derek Lowe’s last 11 home starts.

CFL: The under is 11-4 in Hamilton’s last 15 home games.

WNBA: Minnesota has covered in eight of its last 10 overall.

Who’s not

NCAAF: The under is just 7-19 in Iowa State’s last 26 overall.

MLB: Colorado is 5-11 in its last 16 meetings with San Francisco.

CFL: Edmonton is 3-11 against the spread in its last 14 meetings with Hamilton.

WNBA: Atlanta is 2-5 against the spread in its last seven meetings with Connecticut.

Key stat

6.38 – The Minnesota Lynx led the WNBA with a +6.38 rebounding margin in the regular season and should have a huge advantage on the glass against the San Antonio Silver Stars. San Antonio finished last in the league with a -5.68 rebounding margin. The Lynx are set as 10-point home favorites Friday.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Shin-Soo Choo, Cleveland Indians – Choo returned to the lineup Thursday after spending three weeks on the DL with an oblique injury, but exited in the first inning after an awkward swing at the plate.

Game of the day

No. 4 Boise State at Toledo (20, 60.5)

Notable quotable

“This defense forces you to be on your A game every play. It’s an up front defense and you know what to expect and we will play close to people. We play so close, and as guys get more comfortable and are anticipating passes and trying to get our hands on it. We want to get hands on these balls.” – Connecticut cornerback Blidi Wreh-Wilson. The Huskies are set as 4-point home favorites to Iowa State.

Notes and tips

It sounds as though we could see all three Connecticut quarterbacks in action again Friday. Many thought Johnny McEntee would sit following a three-interception performance in last week’s loss to Vanderbilt, but coach Paul Pasqualoni says McEntee, Michael Nebrich, and Scott McCummings should all play against Iowa State. McEntee is expected to start with Nebrich coming on for a bit in the second quarter, while McCummings will run the wildcat as needed.

The Maryland Terrapins have suspended Quintin McCree and Ronnie Tyler, two of their top three receivers for unspecified violations of team rules. Mcree is second on the team with seven catches with Tyler just behind with six. Maryland is set as a 1-point favorite at home to West Virginia following the club’s bye.

After winning their first five games, the Edmonton Eskimos have dropped four of five heading into Friday’s date with the Tiger-Cats in Hamilton. They’re also riding a 1-5 slump against the number and are set as a 5-point underdog.

Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- This week is the first one since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger that there are no divisional games on the schedule. Not one.

-- Tampa Bay Rays are where the A's were 10 years ago; really strong starting pitching, and contributions from unusual position players.

-- Last night was 105th time LSU-Mississippi State played football, but first time when both teams were nationally ranked.

-- What does ESPN see in Chris James as a game analyst? Jesse Palmer is surprisingly good; James is abrasive and hard to listen to. Plus, he had a college football coach fired because the guy didn't play his kid. Jerk.

-- Buffalo Bills have the most guys who weigh 300+ pounds-- 16.

-- ESPN reports that Justin Rose is leading a PGA Tour event after the first round for the 12th time, but won only one of previous eleven.

***************

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Things I'm looking for this weekend.......

13) How will Michael Vick be received in Atlanta Sunday night?

12) Over the last decade, favorite is 8-0 vs spread in Baltimore’s next game after beating the Steelers, with Ravens 4-0 when favored, so they haven’t lost to lesser teams coming off their big win.

11) Auburn weaseled out two home wins when they looked dead in both games; now their inexperienced squad heads on road for first time, visiting a Clemson team that lost on the Plains by a FG LY. Should be fun.

10) How will the Lions do in a game they’re expected to win? Records I have go back 10 years; Detroit hasn't been favored to win a game by 7+ points since at least 2000.

9) UCLA thought they had a breakthrough win at Texas LY, but then the Longhorns fell apart, so the win wound up not looking so good. Now Texas is visiting Pasadena, and both sides might use three QBs. Its never good when a team uses three QBs in the first half.

8) All these new NFL stadiums are nice, but tickets are so expensive now, they’ve priced a lot of avid fans out of attending games, so wine/cheese crowd goes and they don’t make much noise. Winner of the Charger-Patriot game is the early favorite to win the AFC. Tom Brady has asked for better crowd support this week. We’ll see if the Foxboro faithful put their Cabernet down long enough to make some noise.

7) Cam Newton was off the charts in his debut last week, but was it his advanced skill, or Arizona’s hideous pass defense? The defending champs are in Charlotte this week, a much tougher test for young Mr Newton.

6) Can Tampa Bay win at least three of four in Fenway and keep the AL Wild Card race interesting? The two losses during week in Baltimore didn’t help their cause any.

5) Temple is only an 8.5-point home underdog against Penn State; this spread tells me the Owls have a chance to spring a huge upset. Nittany Lions aren’t getting good QB play, which you need to win on road, but Temple is stepping up way up in class this week after crushing putrid Akron last week.

4) Denver Broncos are 5-22-1 vs spread in their last 28 games as a home favorite; some of the crowd wanted Tebow to play in relief of Orton Monday night, so Denver needs to beat the Bengals, in a game that is probably the most points Denver will be favored by all season, and Orton needs to do enough to shut the critics up.

3) Can Notre Dame win a game? I mean, not like Denard Robinson is freakin’ Dan Fouts, but the Wolverine QB was 7-10/202 with three TDs against the Irish last week, in the fourth quarter alone. Michigan State’s senior QB Cousins is a way better passer than Robinson, though he doesn’t possess the running threat. This is an interesting game.

2) Raiders have a very short work and a very long road trip as Buffalo tries for a 2-0 start; Bills looked tough in crushing the Chiefs last week, but hard to tell how much of it was Buffalo’s improvement and how much was the Chiefs not being very good. Winner of this game will be a surprising 2-0.

1) Rams lost Jackson/Amendola to injury last week, but at least Bradford will play in the Swamp; St Louis has to stay close early, put ton of pressure on immobile Eli Manning and hope fickle Swamp fans turn on Big Blue. This is Rams’ first Monday night game in five years. Both sides are very hungry for a win.

Armadillo's Write-Up

Week 12

Edmonton (6-4) @ Hamilton (7-3)-- TiCats are 4-0 at home, averaging 37 ppg- they lost 28-10 (+1.5) at Edmonton way back in Week 2, when Eskimos were on way to 5-0 start. Last three Toronto games and six of last eight Roughrider games stayed under the total.

Canadian bacon: CFL Week 12 betting preview and picks
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Edmonton Eskimos at Hamilton Tiger-Cats (-5, 50.5)

Both the Eskimos and Tiger-Cats had a brutal reality check last week.

Edmonton, plagued with injuries, must find a way to stop its skid after a strong start, while the Tiger-Cats need to rebuild their confidence after being mauled by the Alouettes.

To fill a gap in the secondary, Hamilton will move CB Ryan Hinds to safety and Jason Shivers will take the spot of all-star LB Markeith Knowlton, who missed practices this week and probably won’t play this Friday.

On offense, expect to see Aaron Kelly taking over for rookie Bakari Grant, who dropped a few easy passes against the Alouettes last Sunday. Center Marwan Hage is doubtful and Mark Dewitt should replace him for a second week in a row .

While the Eskimos also have a long injury list, keep in mind the Tiger-Cats will be playing their third game in eleven days and fatigue is expected. But that shouldn’t be enough for the Eskimos to pick up a win in Hamilton, where they’ve gone just 1-8 since 2003. Their last win at Ivor Wynne Stadium goes back to 2008.

Pick: Hamilton

Toronto Argonauts at Saskatchewan Roughriders (-7, 50.5)

The return of Andy Fantuz didn’t produce a bang but the Roughriders kept rolling nonetheless. Despite resting for a few days and missing practices, MLB Barrin Simpson will play. Same goes for RB Wes Cates, who was also granted a day off.

Toronto's QB change didn’t turn things around, even if Steven Jyles has nowhere to go but up after Cleo Lemon. The acquisition of WR Preachae Rodriguez will bring more vertical plays but that isn’t enough to make this team competitive.

In the past, Jyles has proven inconsistent and is with his fourth team in six seasons. The Argos offense is the worst in the league with an average of 19.8 points per game while their defense is giving up 28 points per game.

Another revealing stat: The Argos have scored only 12 touchdowns in 25 trips inside their opponents’ 20-yard line. Plus, they haven’t scored a TD since the third quarter of their game against Saskatchewan on August 18. That’s more than 140 minutes of football without a major.

Pick: Saskatchewan

B.C. Lions at Calgary Stampeders (-4.5, 50.5)

The Lions have had a terrible start but they can put themselves back in the thick of a pennant race by playing six of their next eight games against West Division rivals.

Geroy Simon, the second-best receiver in the CFL behind Montreal’s Jamal Richardson, has 812 yards and is heading towards a ninth-consecutive 1,000-yard season.

The Stampeders offense, led by Henry Burris, can still light up the scoreboard even without receiver Jabari Arthur (thigh) and it will be interesting to see how it fares against a stout B.C. defense that gave up no touchdowns and only 23 points in its last three games.

Besides Arthur, linebacker Brandon Isaac (groin) and DE Charleston Hughes should be out of the Stampeders lineup. The good news for Calgary is that LBs Juwan Simpson and Malik Jackson should play after nursing injuries.

The Leos defense has multiple threats up front and a strong secondary, but most importantly features MLB Solomon Elimimian, who can already be considered the best defensive player of the CFL. He leads the league with 62 tackles.

Also keep in mind that the Lions won in their two visits to McMahon Stadium last season.

Pick: B.C.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Montreal Alouettes (-7.5, 52.5)

Injuries are taking their toll on the Blue Bombers, who will have to go on without MLB Joe Lobendahn (knee) for the remainder of the season. Quarterback Buck Pierce (ribs) could miss Sunday’s game, which would bring substitute Alex Brink under center. Young receiver Kito Poblah (shoulder) won’t play either against the Alouettes.

Those injuries aren’t the only concerns for Winnipeg, which just can’t seem to run the ball and has coughed up 10 turnovers in the past two games. Those losses of possession resulted in a 72-30 stomping in the Banjo Bowl - a cold shower for Winnipeg fans who love to brag about “Swaggerville”.

The Alouettes seem back on track after a few bumps, despite the numerous casualties on defense. Although, Seth Williams and Marc-Olivier Brouillette, both off the nine-game injured list, have stepped up nicely.

Pick: Montreal

Friday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

Javier Vazquez, Florida Marlins (10-11, 4.13 ERA)

There is some talk that Vazquez may call it a career after this season and if that’s true, he’s going out with a bang. The veteran has allowed just a single run over his last three starts with 20 strikeouts compared to three walks.

"He's been pitching unbelievably. And when you see a guy doing that and not getting anything out of it, as a position player we feel guilty," Florida first baseman Gaby Sanchez told reporters recently. "It's been amazing the turnaround from the beginning of the year to now. He's got his velocity back, he's doing everything out there."

James Shields Tampa Bay Rays (15-10, 2.70 ERA)

Shields already has a career-high 15 wins on the year and nearly picked up his 12th complete game in his last start. He left with one out in the ninth during a 9-1 win over Boston, giving up a solo home run and seven hits. The big righty has now allowed just three earned runs over his last four starts, including a pair of complete games over that span.

Slumping

Tim Stauffer, San Diego Padres (8-12, 3.87 ERA)

Stauffer has to be counting the days to the end of the regular season at this point. He hasn’t won since Aug. 18 and is working on a fat 9.69 ERA in three starts since then.

"Physically and mentally I feel strong and good,'' Stauffer told reporters recently. “I'm just not executing as well as I need to be. I'm just not putting guys away when I have a chance to.''

Alex White, Colorado Rockies (3-1, 6.32 ERA)

Don’t let White’s 3-1 record fool you because this guy has been awful in his four starts with Colorado. He has allowed nine home runs and has an 8.18 ERA. The Rockies have averaged 5.5 runs in his starts and they’ll need to keep that up to help him out. White gave up five homers in a 12-7 win over Cincinnati in his last start, upping his total to nine dingers allowed since coming over from Cleveland.

Hot lines: Friday’s best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Milwaukee Brewers at Cincinnati Reds (105, N/A)

All of a sudden it doesn’t sound like everything is peachy in Milwaukee’s clubhouse. On the heels of K-Rod’s comments that he wasn’t happy with his setup role, Prince Fielder came out and told everybody that this is “probably” going to be his last season with the Brewers.

Considering the team’s cap situation and the fact that he’s due to become a free agent, this isn’t shocking news, but the timing of a statement definitely is. The Brewers have been on a major slide, watching their lead in the NL Central shrink to 5.5 games ahead of Thursday’s action, so they don’t have time for this stuff.

Still, manager Doug Melvin tried to extinguish the controversy.

"If players give you the same old clichés, then they get criticized for the same old clichés," Melvin told reporters. "Both players spoke what they felt, and I respect that. I don't have a major issue with that as long as these guys go out and play the game. Nobody plays the game harder than Prince Fielder, and nobody is as big a competitor as K-Rod."

We tend to agree and against Bronson Arroyo, any team’s a good bet.

Pick: Brewers

Florida Marlins at Washington Nationals (-115, 7.5)

Don’t look now, but the Washington Nationals are on a bit of a hot streak. They beat up on the New York Mets 10-1 on Thursday to secure a four-game series sweep in the Big Apple.

Ian Desmond did most of the damage at the dish, picking up five hits and driving in three runs, while rookie Tommy Milone threw 5 2/3 solid innings to notch the first MLB win of his career.

They have now won five straight games, outscoring the opposition 26-6 over that stretch as they moved ahead of the Mets into third spot in the NL East. However, they will have their work cut out for them Friday against Florida’s Javier Vazquez. The veteran has given up just one run over his last three starts.

The Marlins have beaten up on the Nats all season and this winning streak has run its course.

Pick: Marlins
