Labour Day Weekend has always marked the start of the “second season” in the CFL. With an 8-team league this is where things start to really get serious. As the weather gets a bit cooler and teams have played each other a few times, we finally get a picture of who is for “real”. The Lions are one of the hotter teams in the league winning 4 of 5, but they’ve all been at the expense of the lesser likes (Toronto, Saskatchewan, and an injury plagued Edmonton). There are a lot of positives coming out of the West coast, an offense that’s starting to find a swagger, and a defense that hasn’t given up a touchdown in 3 games. Unfortunately they didn’t start 0-5 by accident, so it’s still a bit of a wait and see with the Lions, and this match-up against the Stampeders will be a big litmus test for them.

The Stampeders were able to make up for their Labour Day embarrassment, a 35-7 loss to the Eskimos at home, with a 30-20 win in Edmonton last week. The win established the Stampeders as the elite in the West, and maybe even the league. Henry Burris has been incredibly consistent the past few years, and rarely has he had two bad games in a row. The CFL is a QB driven league, which means that it very well could be the Stampeders and Anthony Calvillo’s Alouettes in the final again. Travis Lulay however represents the future, and he’s continually improving, so it wouldn’t be completely surprising if he and the Lions were able to continue their hot streak against the Stampeders.
