Milwaukee Brewers Meet Cubs At Wrigley Field

The Milwaukee Brewers are closing in on the NL Central crown, and they'll hope to take one more step in the right direction this week when they head to Wrigley Field for a showdown with the Chicago Cubs.

Monday night's encounter starts at 8:05 (ET), with television coverage on FOX Sports Wisconsin and Comcast Sports.

Coming into play Sunday, the Brewers were holding a 6 ½-game lead in the NL Central, and their magic number to clinch the division just five. Milwaukee is also paying close attention to the NL West-leading Arizona Diamondbacks, as well. The Brewers held a two-game lead on the Diamondbacks for the second-best record in the NL amongst division leaders as of Sunday morning.

Assuming that both win their divisions, the team with the better record will face the NL Wild Card (likely the Atlanta Braves) with home-field advantage; the team with the lesser record has to start off the postseason on the road at the Philadelphia Phillies, who will likely become the first team to get to 100 wins at some point this week.

Meanwhile, the Cubs are just playing out the season, one which has been a certified disaster. The threat of losing 100 games is at least gone, but 90 losses is still a likelihood, something that isn't looked upon kindly in the Windy City.

This is an important start for Milwaukee's Chris Narveson. The lefty is still fighting for a spot in the starting rotation for the postseason. He has been in and out of the bullpen since the end of August, making two starts and two relief appearances.

For the year, the southpaw is 10-7 with a 4.40 ERA, numbers which are fairly mediocre. Batters are hitting a marginal .258 against him, but thanks to 57 walks, his WHIP is a suspect 1.37.

The good news for Narveson is that he has pitched well on the road of late. Milwaukee is 4-0 in his last four road starts, and Narveson is 3-0 with a 2.38 ERA.

Narveson has dominated the Cubs over his brief career, and he has gotten the job done both as a starter and a reliever. The lefty has made five starts and seven relief appearances against Chicago, and is 6-0 with a 3.41 ERA. Three of those six wins were here at the Friendly Confines.

The Cubs haven't won a game in which Casey Coleman made an appearance since May 19, a span of 10 straight outings. The righty has pitched as a starter in all but two of those games, and has had some awfully ugly results.

Coleman is 2-8 with a 7.06 ERA, and his splits are as bad as his record and ERA suggest. A WHIP of 1.87 is dreadful, and batters are knocking him around for a .317 batting average. Coleman also nearly has as many runs allowed (59) as strikeouts (60), something that normally keeps players in the minor leagues.

However, at just 24 years old, the Cubs think Coleman can work through his problems, and with the minor league season over with, manager Mike Quade wants to keep him in a regular rotation for the rest of the year.

Milwaukee has swept two straight series with the Cubs, winning six straight overall in this series. However, all of those games were played in Miller Park. The home team is 10-2 in the 12 clashes this year coming into this series.

The biggest factor in this one might be Mother Nature. During the day, winds are going to be blowing out at upwards of 20 mph, and the hope for these pitchers is that the wind calms down after nightfall.

The 'over' has gone 19-5-2 in the last 26 meetings of these two teams here at Wrigley Field.

Preview: Pirates (68-85) at Diamondbacks (88-65)

Game: 1
Venue: Chase Field
Date: September 19, 2011 9:40 PM EDT

Re-establishing their success at Chase Field will move the Arizona Diamondbacks closer to an unexpected NL West title.

Extending his winning streak there may eventually earn Ian Kennedy the NL Cy Young Award.

Kennedy looks to match the longest home winning streak by an Arizona pitcher Monday night when the Diamondbacks open a three-game series with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Arizona (88-65) ended a three-game slide with Sunday's 5-1 victory at San Diego. The Diamondbacks lead the West by five games over second-place San Francisco with nine to play, including three head-to-head meetings at Chase Field this weekend.

Coming on the heels of back-to-back last-place finishes, Arizona has a magic number of five to clinch its first division title since 2007.

"Every victory at this point of the season is great," said Kirk Gibson, a top candidate for NL Manager of the Year..

Another win for Kennedy (19-4, 2.99 ERA) would also be a great milestone. The right-hander is on the brink of becoming the Diamondbacks' first 20-game winner since 2008, when Brandon Webb won the Cy Young.

Webb also is the only Arizona pitcher to win six straight home starts - a run that bridged the 2007 and 2008 seasons. Kennedy has a chance to equal that run, as he's posted a 1.69 ERA while winning his last six outings in the desert. He's also 11-1 with a 2.42 ERA in his last 13 starts overall.

Kennedy struggled while failing to get his 20th win Tuesday at Los Angeles, allowing four first-inning runs in a game the Diamondbacks rallied to win 5-4 in 10.

"I wasn't commanding it as well. It wasn't as sharp as it had been, especially with two strikes," said Kennedy, who lasted six innings.

Kennedy didn't get a decision in his only meeting with the Pirates on Sept. 17, 2010, allowing two runs - one earned - in six innings of a 4-3 road loss for the Diamondbacks.

Arizona rookie first baseman Paul Goldschmidt is 6 for 17 with four RBIs in his last five games. He had two hits including a homer Sunday and drove in three.

While Arizona is seeking a division crown, the Pirates (68-85) head into their final nine games looking for a positive end to a season that once saw them flirt with first place in the NL Central.

Pittsburgh has dropped eight of 10 and has been outscored 28-4 during a three-game slide after falling 15-1 to the Dodgers on Sunday.

Jeff Karstens (9-8, 3.45) takes the mound seeking his first win since beating San Francisco on Aug. 10. The right-hander is 0-2 with a 6.20 ERA in four starts since, and has been skipped twice in the rotation due to arm stiffness. He struggled upon his return Tuesday, allowing four runs and seven hits in 4 1-3 innings while not getting a decision in a 6-4 loss to St. Louis.

Karstens is 1-0 with a 2.01 ERA in six games - two starts - against the Diamondbacks. His only start at Chase Field was a two-hitter in a 2-0 win Aug. 6, 2008.

Angels try to stay in Wild Card race Monday

LOS ANGELES ANGELS (83-69)

at TORONTO BLUE JAYS (77-75)

First pitch: Monday, 7:10 p.m. EDT
Line: Toronto -145, Los Angeles +135, Total: 8.5

The Angels and Blue Jays will square off on Monday night in a very important series for Los Angeles. The Angels are 4.5 games back of the AL West leading Rangers and four back of the Wild Card-leading Red Sox with nine games remaining.

The Angels will send Jerome Williams (3-0, 3.90 ERA) to the mound on Monday night to make his fifth start of the season. Williams had a shaky outing on Tuesday, lasting only 4.1 innings and allowed three runs and walked five. The red-hot Ricky Romero (15-10, 3.02 ERA) will get the ball for Toronto. Romero is 8-1 in his past 11 starts and the Jays have won 10 of the outings. The Angels have been just average on the road this year, going 39-38. Los Angeles has not been good as an underdog where it is 24-32 and also just 19-21 against the AL East. Toronto, on the other hand, is 39-28 as a favorite and a solid 52-42 in night games. As much as L.A. needs this game, the pick is for TORONTO to win behind another great pitching performance by Ricky Romero.

The FoxSheets provide two more trends supporting the Blue Jays.

Play Against - Road underdogs with a money line of +100 or higher (L.A. ANGELS) - terrible offensive team (<=4.2 runs/game) against a good starting pitcher (ERA<=4.20) (AL), with a starting pitcher whose gives up 0.5 or less HR's/start. (125-45 since 1997.) (73.5%, +55.6 units. Rating = 3*).

Play On - Home teams (TORONTO) - with a team batting average of .260 or worse on the season (AL), after shutting out their opponent. (182-113 since 1997.) (61.7%, +49.7 units. Rating = 2*).

Williams has notched a perfect record thus far, but will need to be extra sharp against Romero on Monday. The Angels as a team need to clear their heads after almost getting swept by the lesser Orioles and knowing that the window of opportunity is closing. This will be the Angels’ last road series before playing their final six at home which includes a three-game home series against Texas. Vernon Wells would love to stick it to his old team, but hasn’t so far this year, going just 2-for-24 against his former team.

Romero has been great at home lately, going 4-0 with a 3.05 ERA in his past six starts in Toronto. Romero has started against the Angels five times in his career, going 3-2 with a 3.24 ERA. The lefty had a nice outing on Wednesday against the Red Sox, going eight innings and allowing three runs in a 5-4 victory. The Jays might not be in any race, but have been playing the role of spoiler this month taking two-of-three from the Yankees and three-of-four from Boston.

Monday’s betting tips: MNF line flutters around key number

Who’s hot

NFL: St. Louis is 8-2 against the spread coming off an ATS loss.

MLB: Arizona has won 18 of its last 24 games.

MLB: Atlanta has won 10 of its last 12 meetings with Florida.

WNBA: Indiana is 11-4 against the spread in its last 15 home games.

Who’s not

NFL: The New York Giants are 2-6 against the spread in their last eight games dating back to last season.

MLB: Milwaukee is 5-16 in its last 21 road games.

MLB: Boston has lost 13 of its last 17 games.

WNBA: The over is 2-7 in Phoenix’s last nine games overall.

Key stat

9 – Only nine NFL teams that started the season 0-2 straight up have rebounded to make the playoffs since 2000.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Ryan Howard, Philadelphia Phillies – The team doesn’t expect Howard to play before Thursday after he hurt his big toe over the weekend. Howard was already dealing with a heel issue that has kept him from starting a number of games over the last couple of weeks.

Game of the day

St. Louis Rams at New York Giants (-6.5, 44)

Notable quotable

"We're happy as [expletive]. We've got a two-game lead with 10 to go. We're ready to go. That's basically it, man. We're not going to feel sorry for ourselves for playing like crap. Nobody's going to give us anything." – Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia on the team’s recent slump. Boston hosts Baltimore in Monday’s doubleheader.

Notes and tips

If you’re looking to get your MNF bet in, you’d better shop around. The line is currently has the hometown Giants set as 6.5-point favorites, but there are still some 7-point lines out there. The total is holding steady at 44 points.

The San Francisco Giants activated closer Brian Wilson from the 15-day disabled list on Sunday. Wilson hasn't pitched since Aug. 15 because of inflammation in his pitching elbow. He made only four appearances last month before the Giants had to shut him down. Wilson had a major league-leading 48 saves last season in leading San Francisco to the World Series title. This season, Wilson is 6-4 with 35 saves and a 3.19 ERA.

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick and cornerback Asante Samuel left Sunday's game against the Atlanta Falcons with injuries. Vick was injured late in the third quarter when he was spun into one of his own lineman. He was spitting blood on the way to the sideline and was taken to the locker room for treatment on a neck injury. With backup QB Vince Young inactive (hamstring), Philadelphia was forced to go with rookie Mike Kafka at quarterback. Samuel suffered a dislocated finger following an interception earlier in the third quarter. He went to the locker room to receive stitches. Philadelphia squares off against the Giants in Week 3.

Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

-- Pac-12 is now going to be the Pac-16, the ACC has 14 teams, and it looks like Baylor/Iowa State are completely screwed. Remains to be seen where the Kansas schools are going to wind up.

-- UConn and Rutgers also want in the ACC. Money talks.

-- Justin Verlander threw eight more shutout innings, won his 24th game in one of the best seasons a pitcher has had in a while.

-- Tampa Bay won three of four in Fenway, are now only two games behind the Red Sox in the Wild Card race. Rays play Bronx Bombers seven games in the next ten days.

-- One area the 49ers are vastly improved is in special teams.

-- The NFL has become so babified protecting quarterbacks that it has become a detriment to the game. Its a violent sport. Get over it.

*****************

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday.........

13) Major onions shown by Tony Romo Sunday, coming back from being KOd with a broken rib to lead his team to an OT win in San Francisco. It looked bleaked for Dallas when they trailed 14-0, but Kitna threw one TD while Romo was in the locker room, and a WR who hadn't caught a pass in a real game since 2006, Jesse Holley, caught three passes for 96 yards, including a huge 77-yard catch in OT that set up the winning FG.

12) Chiefs lost their first two games 41-7/48-3; major trainwreck, before Jamaal Charles blew out his knee. That makes it even worse. Extremely difficult coaching job right now for Todd Haley.

11) 49ers led 14-0; Vikings led 17-0 at the half; Raiders led 21-3 at half. They all lost. Not many NFL teams lose games they lead by 14+ points.

10) In first half, Buccaneers ran 20 plays for 62 yards, three 1st downs and zero points. In second half, they ran 33 plays for 278 yards, with 16 first downs and 24 points. Halftime is 12 minutes long. What changed?

9) Buffalo was down 21-3 at halftime; they had ball five times in second half, running 40 plays for 326 yards, 25 first downs and 35 points. Not a lot of defense in Orchard Park Sunday; teams combined for 79 passes and there wasn't one sack in the entire game.

8) Why does Dallas pinch pennies on its kicker ever year? They drove ball 77 yards on 14 plays on its opening series, but Dan Bailey shanked a 21-yard FG and a drive that ate half the first quarter was fruitless, giving the 49ers momentum they carried throughout the first half.

In fairness, Bailey drilled a 47-yarder to tie the game in the last minute, but his early miss gave the 49ers hope against a superior team.

Miami also missed a 34-yard FG and had another one blocked; Redskins had a 30-yard FG blocked. Is that an effect of the shortened practice time in training camp? Field goals don't usually get blocked in the NFL.

7) Tom Brady is on pace to pass for 7,520 yards this season. Seriously, he is. He has 940 passing yards in two games.

6) Denver Broncos are now 5-23-1 against the spread in last 29 games as a home favorite. Playing at mile high altitude was always thought to be a huge advantage. Broncos are also 7-20 SU in their last 27 games.

5) Dolphins have now lost their last six home games. Go figure.

4) Colts are on national TV three of the next five weeks. Awesome.

3) In two games, Cam Newton is 52-83/854 passing. One thing that has changed dramatically in the last five years is that inexperienced players can excel at QB now-- didn't used to be that way. Think about how bad John Elway and Troy Aikman were in their rookie seasons. Guys like Aaron Rodgers/Steve McNair didn't see the field for years.

2) In two games, Vikings have been outscored 41-3 in the second half; if you're wondering why the Redskins benched Donovan McNabb in second half of games last year, this could help explain it.

1) Last week, there were 14 touchdowns scored on defense/special teams. In Week 2, not one. None. Zero. I do not have an explanation for this.

Monday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Streaking

Roy Halladay, Philadelphia Phillies (18-5, 2.34 ERA)

Halladay threw his eighth complete game of the season in his last start to help the Phillies clinch a playoff spot with a 1-0 win over the Astros. He struck out seven and walked one. Over his last four starts, he has given up just three earned runs as he chases down another Cy Young trophy.

Mike Minor, Atlanta Braves (5-2, 4.11 ERA)

With Jair Jurrjens and Tommy Hanson on the shelf, Minor is getting a big opportunity with the Braves. He picked up a no-decision in his last start but is 2-0 with a 3.74 ERA over his last four outings.

“I feel better and better every time I go out there,’’ Minor told reporters. “I feel like more a part of the team than just a fill-in. I think they kind of trust me now a little bit.’’

Slumping

Brian Matusz, Baltimore Orioles (1-7, 9.84 ERA)

Matusz hasn’t pitched since Sept. 5, when he gave up five runs in 1 1/3 innings in an 11-10 loss to the New York Yankees. Since then he’s been working on the side with pitching coach Rick Adair and feels more confident about his stuff.

"I feel like I've definitely made strides in terms of going out there and getting a good feel in the bullpen and working,” Matusz told reporters.”As for the results, the game will be the deciding factor but I feel like I've made adjustments to go out there with confidence."

David Huff, Cleveland Indians (2-5, 3.40 ERA)

Huff was drilled for eight runs in just four innings of work in a 9-1 loss at Texas last week and has now dropped each of his last three starts. He has allowed four home runs over that stretch but managed to go at least six innings in three outings before the blowout loss to Texas.

Hot lines: Monday’s best MLB bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Red Sox at Baltimore Orioles (N/A)

Tensions are high in Beantown these days as the Red Sox continue to struggle down the stretch and they’ll be even higher if they can’t take care of the Orioles in Monday’s doubleheader.

The Red Sox lost again Sunday and now sit just two games ahead of Tampa Bay in the wild card race. There was also some speculation that Adrian Gonzalez is dealing with a shoulder injury, but the team says that isn’t the case.

"Gonzi has been taking BP every other day on the field for about a month and a half," Red Sox manager Terry Francona commented over the weekend. "When FOX comes in and announces that, they could have announced it in July, and then I have to answer it. That's not any big surprise. He's backed off for a long time.”

Gonzalez didn’t say much about his shoulder when asked about it but did say that he has been too aggressive at the plate lately, swinging at pitches out of the strike zone instead of taking walks.

The Sox have a lot of issues right now and with the scuffling Kyle Weiland on the mound for the first game of the doubleheader an Orioles bet looks tasty.

Pick: Orioles

Milwaukee Brewers at Chicago Cubs (+140, N/A)

It looks as though all the Brewers needed was a trip to Cincinnati to get back on track. Milwaukee had lost six of eight before heading to Cincinnati, but after a sweep of the Reds, the Brewers’ magic number sits at four.

"We did well on both sides, hitting and pitching," Prince Fielder told reporters. "Especially to do it on the road gives us extra confidence. They play us tough here. In this series, we played them better. It's a great feeling right now. But we still have to close things out."

They should be able to take another step closer to the playoffs Monday as they send out Chris Narveson against the struggling Casey Coleman, who gave up six runs in just 3 2/3 innings against the Reds last week.

Pick: Brewers

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rounding the bases: This week's best MLB trends
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every week, we update you on who's hot, who's not and situational betting spots in Major League Baseball.

HOT TEAM: San Francisco Giants

THIS SEASON: 83-70
LAST WEEK: 7-0

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: At the Dodgers for three, at the Diamondbacks for four.

THE SKINNY: A repeat of last season, when they pitched their way to a World Series title, most likely isn’t going to happen. But, at the least, the Giants are making their bettors happy as they head for home.

San Francisco strolled into a Monday off day, having won eight consecutive games, 11 in September overall, and in the last four, the Giants scored at least six runs. The pitching has still been there, as Matt Cain has two of those victories this month.

And the offense -- with Pablo Sandoval and Carlos Beltran leading the way -- has given the fans a reason to stay positive in the last two weeks, as they desperately chase the Braves in the NL Wild Card race.

Listen, when you’re the defending champions, and you’re about to lose the division title to Arizona, it’s hard to view the season as anything but a disappointment. But wins are wins in our business, and San Francisco is corralling quite a few of them this month, as the Giants keep hope alive for a postseason bid.

COLD TEAM: Minnesota Twins

THIS SEASON: 59-92
LAST WEEK: 0-5

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: At the Yankees for one, home to Mariners for three, at the Indians for four.

THE SKINNY: Joe Mauer’s unfortunate case of pneumonia sort of sums up the season for the Twins. Both Mauer and Justin Morneau have been shut down for the season, and with a lineup laced with unproven players, Minnesota will embark on a bear of a schedule this week, so consider fading them.

Minnesota walked into its makeup matinee on Monday vs. the Yankees, having lost eight consecutive games. And by the time this week is over, they’ll play eight more games in seven days, so look out.

In Sunday’s 6-5 loss to the Indians in Minnesota, the Twins had six players in the lineup with batting averages of .230 or worse. They left 22 runners on base, and they used six pitchers only to end up with another defeat.

OVER TEAM: Chicago White Sox

O/U THIS SEASON: 68-75-9
O/U LAST WEEK: 6-1

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: At the Indians for four, home to the Royals for three.

THE SKINNY: The White Sox pitching staff has fallen apart, and you’d be wise to consider them as an over play the rest of the way, as a result.

Chicago’s 10-5 win over Kansas City on Sunday snapped a seven-game losing streak, and the overs have flowed throughout September because of those slumping arms.

During that skid, they allowed at least six runs in six of those games, and the White Sox have allowed at least eight runs five times in the month. They gave up 29 runs in four games to the less-than-mighty Royals over the weekend, and in Saturday’s 10-3 loss, starter Zach Stewart and Co. allowed 18 hits.

When you’re throwing like that, you may not need much offense to get you to over-land, but the White Sox should be able to accommodate regardless.

UNDER TEAM: Florida Marlins

O/U THIS SEASON: 73-71-9
O/U LAST WEEK: 1-7

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: Home to the Braves for three, at the Brewers for three.

THE SKINNY: Don’t forget about those irrelevant teams that are tucked away in never, never land this month, as you might be able to string together some unders.

Florida, with an expanded roster and a ton of makeup games, has simply run out of whatever steam it had accumulated under manager Jack McKeon on offense. Last Thursday was definitive proof, as they clearly went through the motions in a doubleheader sweep at Philadelphia, losing 3-1 and 2-1.

Heading into Monday’s series opener vs. Atlanta, the Marlins had been held to one run or less five times in September, and in Sunday’s 4-3 loss to Washington, they had two more strikeouts (eight) than hits.

But what’s so important to unders, is the staff, and Florida’s has been just fine this month. Javier Vazquez shut out the Nationals on Saturday, 3-0, and Clay Hensley won two games five days apart.

In this, the hurricane season, Florida is showing a perfect storm of slow bats and fast arms, and it clearly appears there are more unders to be had.
