Former NFL quarterback Brett Favre has signed on to provide color commentary for a college football game featuring his alma mater Southern Mississippi, regional sports channel Comcast Sports Southeast (CSS) announced Friday.

The 41-year-old future Hall of Famer will serve as a live television analyst when Southern Miss hosts Rice on Oct. 1.

"I'm excited to be back at Southern Miss with the Golden Eagles," Favre said in a press release. "I'm not committing to a new career in broadcasting, but just wanted to support Southern Miss and check out the view from the press box. It should be fun and I hope the fans enjoy it."

Favre, who started at quarterback for Southern Miss from 1987-1990, set several passing records at the school despite being recruited as a defensive back out of high school.

"CSS is thrilled to have Brett share his knowledge and insight as color analyst," CSS general manager Mark Fuhrman said in a statement. "We've had a great relationship with Conference USA for many years and I know our viewers will enjoy hearing Brett's perspective on the game."

After finishing his career at Southern Miss, Favre was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in the second round of the 1991 NFL draft. He was traded to the Green Bay Packers in 1992 and went on to play 16 seasons there, leading them to two NFC Championship Games and a Super Bowl title in the 1996 season.

Favre, who has made a handful of highly-publicized returns to the NFL in recent years despite signaling his intentions to retire, called it quits once again following the 2010 season. His final year in the league was plagued by injuries and an off-field scandal involving allegations that he sent lewd photographs to former New York Jets game-day hostess Jenn Sterger.

In 20 NFL seasons, Favre was named to 11 Pro Bowls and earned three league MVP honors. He holds the NFL all-time record for career passing yards (71,838) and touchdown completions (508).
