First, let’s address the most burning question surrounding the 2011 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nominations: No, Rush didn’t make the cut, again. Let the annual wailing and gnashing of teeth begin!

But, the great prog blackout notwithstanding, some other traditional oversights did get addressed with this year’s round of 15 nods.

Most gratifyingly, rock’s female pioneers of the mid-‘70s are finally getting a shot at getting their due. It’s sometimes seemed as if the Rock Hall doesn’t believe women did much of anything between Janis’ death and the Madonna nation’s birth. But now they're coming straight on for you! The figures who arguably did the most to advance women in rock in the Me Decade, Heart and Joan Jett, both picked up first-time nominations.

So did Rufus with Chaka Khan. Two previous women nominees associated with the era, Laura Nyro and Donna Summer, are also back among this year’s mix of contenders. (Maybe the nominating committee actually visited the Hall of Fame's new "Women Who Rock" exhibit this summer?)

The other area of obvious emphasis: the late ‘80s dudes who helped make up the second generation of MTV rock stars. Guns N’ Roses and the Cure are up for the first time, joined by second-time nominees the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Surely this town ain’t big enough for all three of ‘em. Will Anthony be telling Axl to put a sock in it? Or will Rose tell Kiedis to put a scarf on it?

And then there’s late ‘80s hip-hop, with first-time nominees Eric B. & Rakim pitted against the Beastie Boys, who are trying for induction a second time. You’ve got to fight for your right to… Parma! (Sorry, a little joke there for the Rock Hall’s hometown, Cleveland.)

The nominee slate is rounded out by the usual potpourri of strange bedfellows that include the Spinners, the Small Faces/Faces, War, Donovan, and Freddy King.

One defined rock in the 1980s and early 1990s, and the other's biggest hit name-calls the genre. Those might be some reasons why Guns N' Roses and Joan Jett are among the leading nominees for this year's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame class of 2012.

In addition to the Axl Rose-led group and the woman who made "I Love Rock 'n Roll" a rallying cry, other first-time nominees who could take the podium at the April 14, 2012, induction ceremony at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio, include legendary mope rockers the Cure, sister act Heart, hip-hop icons Eric B. & Rakim, classic vocal group the Spinners, blues giant Freddie King, soul act Rufus with Chaka Khan and 1960s rockers the Small Faces/Faces.

A number of previous nominees are back again for another shot at the Hall, including the Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, War, Donovan and Laura Nyro.

Acts become eligible for the Hall 25 years after the release of their first single or album, so this year's crop all started releasing music in or before the year 1986.

Jett is one of the most iconic women in rock, from her teenage jailbait tour in the all-girl group the Runaways to her tough-as-nails leather-clad days as a solo star and bandleader of the Blackhearts. With her signature low-slung guitar, spiky black hair and Elvis sneer, Jett broke out as a solo star in the early 1980s with a string of fist-pumping hits (many of which were covers of old-school rock tunes) including "I Love Rock 'n Roll," "Crimson and Clover," "I Hate Myself for Loving You," "Do You Wanna Touch Me" and "Bad Reputation."

Led by the mercurial Rose, GN'R re-invented hard rock with 1987's Appetite for Destruction, which featured such indelible glam-punk hits as "Welcome to the Jungle," "Paradise City," "Sweet Child o' Mine" and "It's So Easy." The band splintered a decade later amid a clash of egos, disagreement over musical direction and drug issues that resulted in Rose soldiering on alone with a parade of replacement sidemen.

New York's Eric B. & Rakim are considered one of the greatest hip-hop duos of all time, rising to prominence on 1986's Paid in Full with a sound that mixed scratching and samples of old-school R&B with B.'s hard-hitting rhymes on tunes such as "Eric B. Is President," "I Know You Got Soul," the title track and "Move the Crowd."

Formed in 1976, British band the Cure have become shorthand for a certain kind of poppily depressive goth rock sound. Fronted by fright-wig-and-red-lipstick-wearing Robert Smith, the Cure are enduring college rock favorites thanks to such gloomily frothy tunes as "Friday I'm in Love," "Just Like Heaven," "Close to Me" and "Why Can't I Be You?"

Sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson formed Heart in 1973 in Seattle, Washington, mixing their love of hard rock and folk music on such mid-1970s radio staples as "Crazy on You," "Magic Man" and "Barracuda." R&B vocal group the Spinners were birthed on the fertile Detroit soul scene in 1961, hitting the charts multiple times with songs including "It's a Shame," "I'll Be Around," "Could It Be I'm Falling in Love" and "Games People Play."

Chicago blues band Rufus struck gold with lead singer Chaka Khan, who helped them score hits with "Tell Me Something Good," "Sweet Thing" and "Ain't Nobody." Late Texas bluesman King (known as "The Texas Cannonball") was often referred to as one of the "three kings" of electric blues guitar, along with Albert King and B.B. King. He was best known for the songs "Have You Ever Loved a Woman" and "Hide Away" and for being one of the first blues players to have an integrated backing band.

Like the Who, English mod rockers the Small Faces were heavily influenced by American R&B, which they explored on signature songs "Itchycoo Park," "Lazy Sunday" and "All or Nothing." In their second phase as the Faces, members included future Rolling Stones rhythm guitarist Ronnie Wood and singer Rod Stewart.

Dissension has become one of the reliable side stories of the Rock Hall ceremonies. While such notoriously splintered acts as Led Zeppelin and the Talking Heads managed to set aside differences for one night (Blondie, Creedence Clearwater Revival and Van Halen not so much), the biggest question this year is whether sole remaining Guns member Rose will make nice with his estranged former bandmates should the group make it into the Hall of Fame.

I guess Dreamboat Annie was Heart's best CD

That had 'Magic Man' and 'Crazy on You.'

But they really didn't have a wall to wall hit CD, like Springsteen's 'Born to Run', or Billy Joel's 'The Stranger'

But I rocked to the Wilson Sisters in the 80's

GNR's music hasn't passed the test of time very well for me, plus Axl was an A-hole.

I used to like them a lot more than I do now. I remember Axl canceling concerts for suspect reasons, but they are way better than Queen ( my most hated very popular band). I don't hate Mercury because he was gay, just don't like his music. I love Elton John tunes.

Not a great class here !

Man you guys that down Heart are missing something...Don't forget these were women in nothing but a mans world at the time..And don't forget they have already been honored by "Decades Rock Live" in 2006 anf VH1 Rock Honors...Some of the biggest musicians in rock history have also been in this band...Not to mention Ann has one of the greatest singing voices of any woman in the world...

I was front row when they came through town with Journey a couple of years back (before 21,000 screaming fans) and was actually turned on and a little turgid as she sang to me,with sweat rolling down her 275lb frame..I felt a little embarrassed, but whats a man to do when a woman with such a powerful voice has you under her spell?

Heart has achieved Top 10 albums on the Billboard charts in the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and now 2010 with chart singles in each decade. This span of four decades places them among the most commercially enduring hard rock acts of all time.

Heart's diversity in music styles has been evident in their chart successes. The band has had singles chart success on Billboard's Hot 100, Mainstream Rock Tracks, and Adult Contemporary charts. Throughout history Heart has been labeled as Hard Rock, Folk, Easy Listening, Heavy Metal, and Hair Metal, many times demonstrating two or more of these styles on the same album. Their album title Dog and Butterfly was a symbol of their sometimes contradictory styles, with the "Dog" side of the album focusing on hard rock tunes and the "Butterfly" side made up of acoustic folk music. Their epic "Mistral Wind" from this album captured both styles in one song, starting as a mellow acoustic ballad and building to a metal crescendo. "Mistral Wind" is considered by many followers of Heart to be the band's finest studio recording...

"Crazy on You"

"Magic Man"

"Dreamboat Annie"

"Little Queen"

"Barracuda"

"Heartless"

"Dog and Butterfly"

"Straight On"

"Bebe le Strange"

"Even It Up"

"How Can I Refuse"

"What About Love"

"Never"

"These Dreams"

"Nothin' at All"

"If Looks Could Kill"

"Alone"

"Who Will You Run To"

"There's the Girl"

"All I Wanna Do Is Make Love to You"

"Stranded"

"Wild Child"

"Tall, Dark Handsome Stranger"

"Black on Black II"

"Will You Be There (In the Morning)"

My personal favorite if i had to just pick one song...unbelievable range in this womans voice...
