Red Sox Managerial Candidate: Ryne Sandberg:howdy:
Oct 052011
When most fans hear Ryne Sandberg, they think of the slick fielding second baseman with great plate presence; still a rarity in the game today. Sandberg was inducted into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame in 2005 for his incredible production on the field. Seemingly, far fewer fans have taken note of the 52 year old Sandberg’s blossoming managerial career.

Sandberg, who had played for the Chicago Cubs for 15 seasons, was hired as the manager of the Cubs single-A ball club, the Peoria Chiefs after the 2006 season. In his first season as a manager, Sandberg took the Chiefs to the Midwest League Championship before ultimately losing to the Lansing Lugnuts. After just three short years, Sandberg had rose quickly through the organization and was managing the AAA Iowa Cubs by 2010. During that season, Sandberg led the Iowa Cubs to an 82-62 record and received the PCL Manager of the Year award.
Ryne Sandberg had made it known that he wanted to manage the Chicago Cubs was a candidate to replace Lou Pinella who had retired following the 2010 season. Pinella himself had even campaigned for Sandberg to take over the manager position that Lou vacated after the 2010 season. Even so, the Cubs had different plans and hired interim manager Mike Quade instead.
After feeling betrayed by the Cubs, Sandberg left the organization to manage the Phillies AAA affiliate, the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs. Sandberg led the Iron Pigs to their first ever playoff appearance and an 80-64 record, the best in the team’s short 4 year history. The Phillies have made it clear that while they would like Sandberg to replace Charlie Manuel when the big league skipper calls it quits, they would not interfere should Sandberg’s opportunity come sooner than later.
Phillies GM Reuben Amaro has said “Obviously if there was a club that was interested in his services we certainly would applaud that and, as is our policy, we’d absolutely give him an opportunity to do that, and I hope he does get that opportunity. If not with us, then certainly with another club. It’s hard for me to think of enough superlatives when I talk about what he’s done there.”
Ryne Sandberg would provide a fresh face for a Boston Red Sox club that has made it clear that they are going to make some changes in the clubhouse. He is hardened and serious. He shows the game respect; as long as Sandberg has been manager, he’s made his players wear their socks high and keep their hats creased and tidy. Baseball is business. And Sandberg’s business is winning. There’s no fooling around when Ryno’s in the house.

AS a die hard Cub fan....This would kill me...

as a die hard cubs fan, this would thrill me. let's face it, the cubs are not going to be competitive in the next 10 years, if ever. ryno isn't getting any younger, and to see him succeed as a manager would make me happy. to hell with the red sox, i'll root for them if nothing else than for their manager. god knows he deserves the chance and throwing him to a team that can't win 70 games will only tarnish his legacy in the blue pinstripes.
