Whether it's the dollar I was asked for at taco bell today,
Or yesterday at walgreens or buying a candy bar for the troops,
Or a bag with food in for the needy at Publix....

I sometimes feel bad for not giving. But I'm sure the generous wife does often....

Am I a dick for not donating a measly dollar to the local cancer center ???

I've posted this before but when I was in college I had a buddy that sold weed and made a boat load of cash. Your talking the 80's so I'm not worried about talking about it.

We would roll 100 joints and get 4 cases of beer and 100 cheeseburgers from McDonald's. We would go to 42nd street in NY and hand the bums a beer a dollar and a joint.....It ranks at the top of my list for feel good things. Those bums loved us. The look on their faces was worth a million dollars! We would do it every couple weeks and by like the 5th time the bums knew us and crowds started to form. The cops actually asked us to stop doing it because it got to crazy...lol

That's awesome.

Don't feel bad. I feel worse for the people making $8/hr that have to ask every single person in their line if they want to donate to down's syndrome, that they could win a $100 gift card for filling out a survey, asking if the person wants to save 10% by applying for a credit card....on and on and on. It gets out of hand. I'm here for Fruit Loops and paper plates. The receipt is 3 feet long.

Even worse is the charities set up outside the entrance of the store.

I have no problem with charities, they just should be self-supporting.

I travel all the time for business, and get hit up at every store in a town I do not even live in. If the checkout girl is hot, she gets my money other wise, nope. I would rather give at home. Also, Texas has so many bums at every corner, I get a big box of Granola bars and hand them one of them at every damn corner it seems. Was in San Diego last week and saw a guy with 2 dogs, went to grocery store and bought a 20 pound bag of food for the poor things.

Way better to buy the dog food instead of giving cash.

I never give to those charities. The people selling them get incentives, thus cutting into the % donated.

I give very generously to a few charities every year and love doing it. What I don't like is being asked to give every single time I checkout at various retailers in my area.

Not at all

It's a rather clumsy way to raise (or to give) money imho

Best would be to do what I do (though your target charities might certainly be different) and bust out a $50-100 donation directly to an org as frequently as you are inclined to do so.

Moffitt Cancer Center gets probably $200 a year from me in three to four bumps. And then they send me useful stuff like return address labels.

Humane Society does that too

I have like 200+ return addy labels and I probably send use about ten a month for snail mail...heh

Many charities are kind of bogus, way too much spent on administration instead of getting the money to the cause. Nobody at a charity should get a 6 figure salary. Research them before giving anything big.

There are corrupt ones.

The worse ones are those dudes that camp out in front of the supermarkets asking to donate money for the homeless. I figure the least a jobless homeless person can do is beg for his own money.

I did give this chick money once because she kinda caught me off guard. She didn't seem all down and out like your normal homeless person so I don't think she was homeless. She was Indian too which in my area is odd because most of your street beggers are either white or black (mexicans don't beg they sell fruit or flowers or wait at home depot for some day labor). I tried to think in my head what her circumstances were and my thinking was she probably lost her husband who was most likely an engineer or doctor and now she is trying to keep her and the kids from becoming homeless and she never developed any employment skills to seek work for herself so she swallowed her pride and took to begging to make rent.

These foreign indian/middle eastern/asian chicks have it bad if their marriage fails. They marry these successful men in an arranged marriage and their husbands treat them like shit. When comes time for divorce and collecting child support their husbands just go back to their home country and leave their wives holding the financial and parental bag.
