CARTERVILLE - A longtime Tri-C Elementary School teacher was found in critical condition in her classroom late Monday afternoon and rushed to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.
Linda Elaine Walker, 45, was pronounced dead about 7:50 a.m. Tuesday in the hospital's intensive care unit.
Walker was alone in her classroom when discovered by a colleague who administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation, Jackson County Coroner Dr. Thomas Kupferer said. She had hanged herself.
Carterville school district Superintendent Robert Prusator said Illinois State Police investigated with the coroner's office.
School administrators and the district office have been in contact with parents by way of recorded telephone messages and a letter written by school counselor Lisa Stanton. Recorded phone messages went out Monday night and Tuesday morning
