Perhaps the most debated about series on the forum, we have the deciding Game 5 in Philadelphia. Currently my book has St Louis +161 and Philadelphia -171.
Carpenter vs Halladay.
Carpenter:
All Starts: 3.56 ERA, 1.273 WHIP
Road Starts: 4.05 ERA, 1.308 WHIP
Last 3 Starts: 2.37 ERA, 0.947 WHIP
Halladay:
All Starts: 2.38 ERA, 1.022 WHIP
Home Starts: 2.54 ERA, 0.961 WHIP
Last 3 Starts: 2.86 ERA, 0.864 WHIP
Within the past 3 weeks, Halladay has faced St Louis twice, giving up 3 and 4 runs in those 2 games. He split the 2 games with the win coming in Game 1 of this series.
Carpenter threw 8 innings of shutout ball against Philadelphia on 9/18 defeating Hamels, and then again in Game 2 lasting only 3 innings giving up 5 hits and 4 ER.
If I pick a side I can't take -171 with Halladay, but I'm not overly confident with Carpenter winning the game wither. The Over has hit in 3 of the 4 games, and these teams both average around 4.5 a game. At a very low number of 7, I'm thinking that the OVER may be the play here. Philly is a bandbox, a hitters park, and although Game 5's generally feature low scoring tightly contested games, I think we may see some runs on the board here.
The play is St Louis +161 and the OVER 7. I don't see St Louis getting shut down, and if they do lose the game I think it goes over making for a little insurance. If St Louis scores 3 runs, the worst we can do is push the total and lose the game. If St Louis scores 4 runs, the worst we can do is split.
Of course if St Louis gets completely shut down by a Halladay masterpiece, its a loss. And if that does happen, Philadelphia may score enough to get the game over the total. However, I feel its a risk worth taking.
Good luck and enjoy the game.
