Viejo Dinosaur as usual gracious in defeat and humble in victory. While that game last night was as a fine an example of two superb pitchers matching up against each other as you will ever see, Carpenter was truly deserving of the win.
On the other hand the Phillies and their unfortunate fans win any game where they only yield just a single run at least 19 out of 20 starts.
Congrats for a great series to both teams and their fans, it's a shame one of the two had to lose..the same can be said for the DBacks and Brewers...
St Louis or Milwaukee whoever advances should represent the NL well in the upcoming World Series..
Personally I would like to see a rematch of the 1968 World Series between the Tigers and Cardinals...When Mickey Lolich defeated the great Bob Gibson 4-1 in game seven.
Gibson struckout 35 batters in 27 innings during the series (a record that still stands) but the favored and defending Champ Cards lost three games to the everyman looking pot bellied lefty Mickey Lolich who won games 2,5 and 7 for the Tigers.
Game 7 much like last night on the road in front of a disbelieving Cardinal crowd who sent the untill then in three World Series nearly un-hitable Bod Gibson to the mound.
Gibson had already won game 1 (he struck out a sill standing World Series record of 17 Tigers in that game) and game 4 for the Cards. During the regular season Denny McClain won 31 games (28 complete games) for the Tigers. The 31 wins a Tiger team record that still stands and may never be broken. Despite losing two games to Gibson earlier in the series McClain won the crucial game six for Detroit to set the stage for the Gibson vs Lolich showdown in game seven.
"Bob Gibson is the luckiest pitcher I ever saw. He always pitches when the other team doesn't score any runs." - Former Cardinal Catcher Tim McCarver...
