i swear the older and wiser i get the less i get along with my parents...they have done a lot for me and i am forever grateful, but i really just dont get along with them any longer. it seems they are so simple minded and emotional about things...i cant have an intelligent debate about politics or anything for that matter...

anyone feel the same way?

I get along great with mine. I'm 29 now, through the years of prob 15-23, I thought they were stupid. Since I've gotten married, had a baby, bought a house etc.....basically since I've gotten my own set of responsibility, I find myself asking them questions all the time and they are usually right, or at the least can point me in the right direction.

Basically, anybody older than me that knows more than me about something, ill listen and learn from em if they'll let me. Hell even a couple of ppl from here that have been around the gambling block 100 times more than I have, help me out.

see i am the exact opposite....im 31 now and just had a baby and bought a house and i feel like i want/need less advice from them...i wish it was different but its just not...i feel like they are so closed minded and simple..maybe i am just a very stubboen independant individual...i left home the day i turned 18 and never lived with them again...

i guess it bothers me that even though i am a smart, accomplished adult, they will never take my advice or opinion seriously...so why should i take what they say as law?? i feel like i have accomplished everything they have and more...

Dude we are mirror images of each other. We should talk sometime about it. Mine are so set in their ways and what irritates me the most is that they never went out to achieve higher things. They each (divorced) live normal middle class life style that is so "vanilla." So opposite of me.

congrats on the baby to both of you guys.... my parents are my BEST FRIENDS...we are so so so close, my dad and I especially very tight... my parents are very conservative, both lawyers so both very strict and follow all types of rules and are old school, but they love sports, love to have fun etc etc...we are close... only thing is since i dont live with them, if they come over and see me having a drink while watching a game or see my bar stocked with booze, they call me an alcoholic, clearly i am not but it really really gets under my skin because they are all about 'omg its a school night ur having a glass of wine' very conservative but it feels like the older i get the closer i get with them....

I never talked politics with my parents, they provided for me very well but had a terrible marriage. I moved cross country to San Diego after High school ( 1982). Dad died in 1992, Mom in 2002.

Dad worked three jobs to avoid Mom, he was an accountant ( with a degree) for the Electric company by day and a janitor by night, he still found time to drive me on my paper route on sat and Sun mornings....actually I drove his Pinto at like 13 years old around the neighborhood and he stuffed the papers in the tubes....I didn't need his help. just as easy to do it on my Peugeot moped, but Sundays were heavy. We usually went out to breakfast 10 miles away with me driving at at like 14 0r so, pretty cool !

My older brother, by 7.5 years graduated about 1974, went to college in Colo ( is still there). This opened up a bedroom, parents never slept in the same room ever again

Mom worked as a head teller at a bank.....she spent her off time normally at Bridgeport/ Milford/ Hartford/ Newport Jai- alai. I often went with her, but not always

Well I booked out in 1982....kind of weird with absent ( and older parents....mom was 43 when I was born in 1963), by absent I mean at 16 I was an adult.

Screwy house, plenty of money, but nobody home....I smoked a lot of pot as teen, cut a lot of school too, still graduated with honors, and got out at 11:14 AM my senior year when I bothered to attend school.

when my Pop wasn't working his three jobs, he was at the bar....often in a backroom on Friday and Saturday nights until 3 AM
playing poker ! I played a couple of times myself at about 18.

That's my background....almost abandoned as a teen ( sort of) by 16 everybody goes there own way,,,,

Just honest being about how I grew up, parents were very distant from each other. for sure !

I had lots of time to smoke a bong and crank up Lynyrd Skynyrd on Vinyl after a Friday/saturday night shift ending at 10 pm at the grocery store ( Finast) circa 1980/1981

I'm home at 10:15 pm, parents are at least three hours behind me....Mom's at Jai-alai, Dad's playing poker in a backroom, Doug is home and experimenting with drugs....to get it right in the 80's ?

The more I think about it ( now) the more I see how much I needed my father on Sunday mornings for the car to deliver those heavy papers. Tough to deliver like 500 lbs of Sunday paper on a bicycle or even a moped when you are 13.
