Ortiz threatening to jump to the Yankees

David Ortiz is threatening to go play for the Yankees.

"That's something I gotta think about. I've been here on the Red Sox a long time, and I've seen how everything goes down between these two ballclubs," he said in an interview with ESPN's Colleen Dominguez. "It's great from what I hear. It's a good situation to be involved in. Who doesn't want to be involved in a great situation where everything goes the right way?"

Ortiz hit .309 with a .953 OPS this season. He had 29 home runs and 96 RBIs. But would the Yankees actually want him? Ortiz turns 36 next month and has played a total of 12 games in the field the last three seasons.

Jorge Posada, a pending free agent who is likely to retire, was the primary DH for the Yankees this season. But in 37-year-old Derek Jeter and 36-year-old Alex Rodriguez, the Yankees have two players who could see increasing time as the DH.

Jeter was the DH 10 times this season, the most in his career. Rodriguez also was the DH 10 times. Mark Teixeira, who will be 32 in April, was the DH nine times.

In addition, the Yankees have young slugger Jesus Montero, a defensively challenged catcher whose primary contribution could be as the DH next season.

As for the Red Sox, Ortiz said was "too much drama."

"I have been thinking about a lot of things. I don't know if I want to be part of this drama for next year," he said.

Given that the Red Sox are coming off consecutive third place finishes and are apparently beset with chemistry problems, it's uncertain to what degree the Red Sox will go in trying to retain Ortiz.

He already sealed the deal, Ortiz is gone, read between the lines what Henry said.

I thank Ortiz for what he's done for the sox over the years.
But I think his time has come to exit the organization.
IMO team chemistry is more important than star players.

would not mind seeing him go after his post-season comments this year. always thought highly of him as a player, and still think he has some solid hitting left in him.

The only way the NYY would sign him is if he plays for about 10% of last year's salary, they have plenty of DH type guys.

I think he would be a great DH fit. Posada is probably retiring, Martin will catch/bench for Montero/ or just be traded, Andrew Jones is garbage,

A-Rod is the natural DH on that team, he's getting fragile and old ( 36 I think). Jeter should also DH a good 10% of the time as he ages, Montero can DH quite a bit, throw Tex in once in a while and plenty of other options like your 4th or 5th outfielder. Whomever that is next year ?

No need for a regular DH like Ortiz, rest your veteran guys somewhat in that slot.

Ortiz is probably actually like 45 now. Good hitter still but a DH should not be getting megabucks.

for 1 million I'd take him for a year, at 10 million, Hell no !

jeter is too stubborn to dh, he wants to field or he'll prefer retirement. Kind of like Michael Young who hates DHing despite getting up there in age. Montero needs to catch, pretty wasteful for a young talent to just be dhing. A-Rod needs to be active this offseason and next year because he was relatively inactive and rusty this season. Letting him rot at DH will just decline his skills even further. His salary dictates that his ass better be there at third base 2 out of 3 game series.
