The Texas Rangers, likely to lose starter C.J. Wilson to free agency over the winter, are preparing to make a strong bid to sign CC Sabathia if the New York Yankees ace chooses to exercise the opt-out clause in his contract, a baseball source told ESPNNewYork.com.

"I hear they're going to throw a boatload of money at him,'' said the source, who requested anonymity. "But I think he'll stay with the Yankees. He's talked so much about how much he loves New York, and besides, the Yankees can't afford to lose him from that pitching staff.''
Sabathia won 19 games for the Yankees this season, and has gone 59-23 with a 3.18 ERA in his three seasons in New York. But he faltered down the stretch somewhat, including allowing a damaging run in the Yankees' 3-2 loss to the Detroit Tigers in Game 5 of the ALDS. Sabathia is eligible to opt out of his seven-year, $161 million deal three days after the conclusion of the World Series.
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman refused to comment on the Sabathia situation, and a call to Sabathia's agent, Greg Genske, was not immediately returned.
Rangers principal owner, president and CEO Nolan Ryan, who does not believe in holding his pitchers to pitch counts, is known to favor workhorse pitchers and Sabathia, who threw 237 1/3 innings this season, is perennially among the league leaders in innings pitched.
The Texas Rangers did not return a call seeking comment.

no they cant, if you have a salary cap you need to have a salary minimum so if its around 125-150 and all teams have to spend within that...marlins, royals, rays, etc etc will never make it...that is why you cant

and cc wont go anywhere else his kids are in school here he already said he loves it here, he isnt leaving, rangers are doing one thing and one thing only.......driving up the price for CC so the yanks dont go out and get CJ wilson its pretty easy to figure out, you knew rangers would do this

I like CC and would love to see him in a ranger uniform. But i agree with Mlink, it aint happening. CC's fat ass couldnt handle the heat of a texas summer.

But if he wants to win, he should opt out and come to Texas. He would fit in here and it would give our whats soon to be two time american league champs a "true ace." I can def see the rangers making a serious push to sign CC though, because he is a lefty and thats a must in arlington and the rangers have the money and the ownership to pursue these big guys now, they were making pretty strong offers to Lee last year. I'd take CC in a heartbeat, but the bottom line is i highly doubt CC wants to pitch in the Texas Heat

cc isnt going anywhere..........

nope, never been to new york prob wont ever go to new york, too many ppl up there for me.

Dude, its fucking hot here. New york heat isnt shit compared to here. We played almost every single game that was at home this summer in over 100 degree heat. Hell i kinda hope the rangers get em now just so i dont have to listen to you talk about how new york is better than everything else. Bottom line is the RANGERS ARE A HELL OF ALOT BETTER THAN THE YANKEES

i know its hott...but he starts 35 games a year, so if he pitched in texas, say 17 in texas, 17 on the road

so 17 of his starts are in texas and say its over 100 in 8 of those

so 8 starts a year that are 'too hott' reallllllllllllly not that big of a deal

and rangers got lucky they played the worst team in the postseason in the opening round, got lucky, rangers are a good team but not as good as the yankees...yankees took the season series record, so where can u justify the rangers are better? yanks lost 2 games to rangers this year yanks won 6

yeah rangers got further, but it was who they matched up against...and put yourself in yankees shoes...your #2 starter gets hurt in the 2nd inning against the tigers and you lose the game... that is what hapened to yanks, their SP got hurt in the 2nd inning they had to use CC on 1 day rest to pitch 2 innings to eat some innings in the middle of the game... so what are you talking about rangers are better? you mean they are luckier? it wouldve been a great series with the two teams, but to say rangers are better is nuts

not sure you necessarily have to have a minimum like the NFL does.....but a salary cap at least makes it a little more even playing field so that teams are rewarded for shrewd moves instead of just throwing money around and spending like crazy until they can put together a winning team (even though that formula doesnt always work *cough* Cubs *cough*).

the players certainly arent going to go for a salcap, and neither are the big boys (NY, Philly, Boston, LA, Chicago...) because they can afford it.

we beat yall in the playoffs last year so we could go to world series while your mostly washed up and highly overrated yankee players could sit at home and comb each others hair. 2 years in a row, playing in the world series and we still arent better than the skanks in your opinion? just shows how much of a homer you are rather than knowledgeable

btw, we are about to beat the tigers that beat the overrated, overhyped skanks too. The AL east if garbage, the only reason AL East is relevant at all is because ESPN builds em up for people like you.

BTW, we are getting to the world series with those tired arms that you said were going to dissapoint ranger fans, lol.

you should try to quit being such a homer, it just makes you look stupid......be realistic

you say they are better now and i disagree.....

i dont watch ESPN so i dont know what hype u are talking about... yanks head to head this year were BETTER than the rangers, and had a better record in a harder division..... my case is rested

you said rangers are better than the yankees? rangers are better than the rays and tigers (right now) they didnt play the yanks, and when they did they lost the season series and had a worse record... if yanks played the rangers they wouldve beat them in 5 games....your best starter in the postseason didnt get hurt in the final game did he? nope, yanks did, not an excuse but if he doesnt get hurt im sure they win.... anyway goodluck im not arguing

The Rangers are hands down better than they were last year. It's not even close. One less ace, but overall a deeper staff, including a better bullpen. Better offense, and better defense thanks to Beltre and Napoli. I don't know how anyone could possibly think the Rangers are worse. Mind boggling.

2011 Stats: 855 runs scored, Team ERA 3.79
2010 Stats: 787 runs scored, Team ERA: 3.93

This is all agency marketing on the part of Wilson and Sabathia's teams. The best way to get Pujols more money from the Cards is for his agent to "leak some info" to a paid "source" in the media that the Cubs/Dodgers/Red Sox want him and want to pay him big. The more believable the story, the better for the player. The timing of the story is best when the spotlight is already on him.

I think the Rangers would love to have CC, just like every other team in the majors. His price tag and desires will determine his spot, just like all the other big-time players. Personally, I don't think he's a Ranger type of guy. I think his personality fits the Yankees more than the Rangers.

And the Rangers are much better than last year. We won't know if they can beat the Yanks in a series because the Yankees lost in the ALDS, but the Rangers are better this year - there's no debating that.

We all have them in our fan base. I'm a Longhorns fan but there is one in the CFB Football forum that kind of makes me cringe every time he starts a thread. I'll give you a hint - it's not sdf.

Yes ! All fan bases have there extreme fans. If Mlink were an Alabama fan , he might poisen Auburns oak trees.

It's just that the Yankees are the most well known (loved and hated) sports franchise there is.

...And agreed , on foghorn leghorn.
