I give him all the respect in the world. But c'mon man, sounds like he was hit one too many times in the noggin down in the twilight of his career with that absurd comment.

Any one hear this?

3rd in QB rating despite an offensive line that doesn't pass protect well...

Last season I was pretty much begging the 49ers to start David Carr over Smith and Smith. This year though, Alex really gets Harbaugh's offense. It's a great fit for his skills.

Alex Smith > Drew Brees?
Alex Smith > Eli Manning?
Alex Smith > Matthew Stafford?
Alex Smith > Matt Shaub?

His stats are great cause they don't ask him to do much.

If that is all it takes to put up nice stats, then what is wrong with Joe Flacco, Matt Cassel, Donovan McNabb, Chad Henne, Rex Grossman, Kyle Orton, Jason Campbell, and others similar quarterbacks that aren't asked to do much? Smith and Harbaugh are obviously doing something right.

One more thing to think about... the 49ers are middle of the pack when it comes to rushing yards a game. It's not like the defense is crowding the box and giving Smith plenty of time back there.

LOL it's 5 weeks and Rivers has a mash unit to throw to.

Alex also has more TDs than Favre to this point in the season

Does go to show you ... running game is the qbs best friend.

Niners are middle of the pack in rushing yards a game...

Im sure when defensive coordinators have the 49ers coming up next week, they are spending all their time trying to figure out how to stop the laser rocket arm of alex smith, not how to stop frank gore

I tend to not give team stats a lot of credence after 5 weeks... I use my eyes... the 49ers run the ball very, very well

Near the bottom in yards per carry and were averaging only like 90 rushing yards a game until last week. I'm gonna disagree. They are about average IMO.

49ers 12th with 117 yards per game rushing. yeah it's funny how one game can swing those team stats so much isnt it? which is why i said 5 weeks of them isnt worth much. extreme example, but iirc the top 2 qbs in the nfl after week 1 were tom brady...and chad henne.

look, clearly youre a 49ers fan. you want alex smith to get all kinds of love. but it's not going to happen after 5 weeks of decent-to-ok play, when he has had 5 or whatever years of terrible play. insinuating he is a better qb than philip rivers, or even in the same discussion, because he has thrown more td passes is silly at this point.
and yeah i stand by frank gore being the #1 focus for opposing defenses, which is going to give you lots of opportunities to throw.
i think the 49ers win outright this weekend, so good luck and all that.

I never once said he was a top QB, or said that he was better than Rivers. I'm just laying out the stats.

Everything will change tomorrow as Smith will be running for his life against the Lions defensive front. His current stats are meaningless.

I'm a fan of Alex Smith, but to say he is top 4 is a little much, even with the victory today.

Brady,Rodgers, Brees for sure ahead of him.

Big Ben, Rivers, Vick, all canidates for the #4.
